- My parent's trip is winding down but they've still been hard at work at my off grid homestead in Central Portugal and the progress on the deck and in the garden has been AMAZING!
We've also managed to have a lot of fun along the way and in this video we head into Fundao for shopping and lunch and we also go to a local soup festival that far exceeded our expectations!
This video is a fun one, I hope you like it! If you do, please give it a like! Thanks!

I’m glad your Dad put in the stairs so you can have a nice usable deck. What a wonderful pair they are
They are indeed and the deck is already getting loads of use!
They deserve lots of beers, great parents.
Definitely!
I 2nd and 3rd that!! 😁🥰
Your Dad is so right, if he hadn't done the steps there still wouldn't be any next time they visited! He knows you so well but also to be fair to you there's too much to do to your house & garden for one person to manage.
Everything looks great, the decking is a work of art & your Mum has worked wonders in the garden.
Haha, yep! He knows me well. The deck is amazing and so is the garden! They've been amazing.
Your mom is really a power house. She gets so much done also thanks to your relatives that visited and helped out too. Your dads deck is looking so good and I see many parties on that deck.
She is indeed! Many parties will be had on the deck. 😁
So sad to see your parents leave, time went by so fast. You guys did a great job. It looks wonderful.❤
One more video still to come! 😀
How wonderful to have help from your parents. Everyone put in some hard work!
It was amazing and they definitely did work hard!
Your parents really did a great job.
They really did! 😀
Your Parents are lovely people !
They certainly are!
What loving parents❤
Definitely! I’m so lucky.
My favourite thing is…..NO UGLY BLUE TARP….yehhhhh. Greetings from Australia
😁
And your Dad, Mom friend's did a great Job to.Lisa,Denis, George.Great Job guys.❤. Raquel.🤗.And I Pray they got home Safely to already.Amen.
Everyone is back home safe and sound. Thanks!
It's good to see you enjoying your country and not just hard work.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Your dad made a marvellous deck. He knows his daughter well and made the stairs too. Lol. Your mom reminds me of my mom. Always working diligently in the garden. You will have a bountiful crop in the Fall. Your day trips look interesting. Glad the weather turned so everyone could enjoy what Portugal has to offer. Your parents' visit flew bye. Take care Kirsty.
Yes my mum did an amazing job in the garden, especially when compared to before they go here. And I love the deck!!
Mum really has the cutest giggle 🥰
Garden is coming along nicely. Beautiful deck lots of work getting done. 👍
Yep it’s getting there!
They work so hard and it made a huge difference. What a wonderful visit . The Deck and stairs look fantastic! Go Mum n Pops!!💙🔧🛠️🔧👍👍👍😁😁
Everyone was so amazing!!
Tracey survived…what a trooper !
I'm amazed!
The garden looks amazing in the video.
It really does! I'm hoping to finish the paths next week. 😁 Thanks!!
Amazing progress everywhere and taking time for fun is important. Love the soup festival and local music. Your parents are lovely.
They are! It's been amazing to have them here!
Your parents are very active and doing a nice job❤
They are, it's been great!
The deck and stairs look great! And the garden looks great too! I know you are sad to see your parents leave!
I definitely am! It was wonderful having them here. 🙂
Beautiful music. 😊
Thanks!
Just a couple of hints.
A mix of equal parts sugar and Borax with a small small amount of water to just blend, in a smallish container with a few holes at the base of your tree will get rid of ants.
Also, Crushed egg shells or shell grit around veggie plants will stop slugs and snails as they don't like crawling over it. Hope it helps.😊😊
Thanks!!
Enjoyed your video such a joy to have your parents visit, looks like you all got a lot of things finished.
It was amazing, thanks!
The deck and garden are looking Amazing!
Thanks!
Faaaantastic!!! Two garden ideas: if you let that lettuce go to seed at the end of the summer, the rains will bring you an effortless winter lettuce crop in your mild climate. Also….I highly recommend getting a pack of hairy vetch seeds or crimson clover cover crop seeds. Spread them around your veggie beds right before the rains (for automatic watering) and they will improve soil, out compete weeds and be beautiful when they flower! The garden is looking soooo great!! Well done!
Oh thanks so much! I feel like I've been trying to find seeds for good cover crops but haven't been able to. I'll look again in the winter because I don't tend to do a garden but effortless gardening is good for me!
@@PortugalfromScratch I can send you some if you think they will get thru, just let me know. Effortless California gardening is my jam :-)
I would love that but Portugal’s customs is brutal! Nothing gets in from outside the EU without hassle and crazy charges. It’s incredibly frustrating! But thanks!!
Hi Kirsty, Your parents really mean business! It shows how much they love you that they work so hard to make things easier for you. Everything looks amazing! This help will put you in good stead. The deck looks amazing too! Your dad did a wonderful job on it. Your parents are real sweethearts. Clearly they want the best for you. I'm so glad they could spend a month with you. You are a great daughter too!! The soup festival looked like a great time. It's not easy to work on your own. Take good care. I hope that your friends will be moving in next to you really soon. All the best, Angela
Yes I’m so lucky they were able to spend a whole month here. It was a fun time!!
Marvellous work, and great, hardworking parents, and daughter. The garden is really taking shape, and the deck and steps look so good. You have the coolest parents of all time, Kirsty. They'll be missed when they leave. Thanks for a great video. :)
My pleasure, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
The deck is looking fab however, I would remove the oleander from the deck just in case the leaves or flowers get into the water and turn it toxic. Will miss your Mum and Dad, they no sooner rock up, then they bugger off again!
I second that. Oleanders are highly toxic. Never burn their wood.
Yes i love it! There aren’t gaps for the leaves to fall into so it think it’s ok. 🙂
The garden looks amazing, the sawdust will deter slugs and snails! The Dad did a great job on the deck 😮
Oh a nice side use of the sawdust, thanks!
I am happy your Dad built the stairs. I agree with him that you probably wouldn’t have done it (at least not for a very long time 😂). I hope you keep Tracey Trumpet well watered and alive after your folks leave. All the flowers and plants for that matter. Keep them alive through summer! 😂😊❤️🙏 loving all the videos of the folks. Take care!
Tracy is looking great! Ya, I definitely wouldn't have done such a nice job!
Great stairs, garden work is super! You have curb appeal❤️
Haha thanks!
What a beautiful transformation!! ❤️🇨🇦
Thanks!
Very nice that your parents are helping you out. Beautiful property.❤🦋🎉🖐☺
It’s been amazing! Thanks!
The deck looks amazing! So glad your dad completed the stairs (he is absolutely right that you would not have completed it😂).
I would have… in 2028, maybe! 😁
Amazing progress ❤❤❤
Thanks!!
..I just saw the macaroni curtain!...Fantastic deck your Dad built. 😉👍
It's baaaaaaack!
@@PortugalfromScratch 😂😂😂...I love that curtain!!!🥰
Haha I love how much you love it! 🤣
Fundau looks like such an interesting place along as usual with the food which always looks so good. More great work on the property and the deck is amazing. I think that your parents and friend enjoyed their visit, sorry to see them go. It is great getting the cardboard and cloth Dow, the weeds grow so quickly. What a tremendous help your parents and friends have been.
They've been wonderful help and it was a lot of fun, too. I feel very lucky!
Well done everyone with the work on the garden, decking, and stairs. Kirsty your very lucky for your perants and friends to help you out.
I really am!!
What great parents. I can see your vision coming to life. Your mom is an amazing gardener. Love the deck and the stairs.
They are! It's been amazing having them here again. 😀
Mega work load, the results are fabulous. Well done all 👏👏👏
Thank you!
Great update (deck & garden looking very stylish) + pretty awesome 'sighting' @ 17:40 😊
Thanks! Ya they were some weird clouds!
Garden looks great. Deck and stairs look great too with Ancel stopper and oleander👍🍾
The plants were my mum's idea!
You taste things exactly like your mom!! It seemed like a weird thing to have a soup festival in the warmer weather, more of a fall thing in my mind, however the variety looked fabulous.
I just LOVE your folks! Hard working, great senses of humour! It is obvious where you get it!
Hugs from 🇨🇦
It was a rather hot day for soup but we still managed to enjoy it! 😁
Great fun!
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
The garden and deck look awesome, so much work! Thinning the plums may keep the branch from breaking under the weight of maturing fruit. You can thin and use the thinning! Try chutney, jam or pickles to start. They are also eaten green, a tart bit of fruit. Could you turn some into frozen ice cubes like your brilliant lemon wedges?
Ooh plum ice balls! 😁 thanks for the ideas, it definitely needs some thinning or propping.
Kiwi's area vine so would need an arch so they can roam to their hearts content. Love the work on the garden. Good on your parents and friends. You are a lucky girl.
I plan on making an arch support one of these days. Yes I’m super lucky!
What an amazing amount of work all of you got done this month. Great to see the progress.
We really did! They worked so hard!
Lovely fun and progress, thanks for sharing.
Just a slight caution..if Tracey the trumpet tree is the same as the ones I know in Australia, she can be toxic, to people and pets..be sure to not let the sap get on you and I’d maybe not pick the flowers to bring inside..can be a psychedelic 😝 very bad if ingested ( I don’t know why anyone would though 🤷🏽♀️)
Yep I’m aware of that plant but not 100% sure if this is the same one. Good to exercise caution though!
Everything is looking fab!
Thank you!
Lots of great work
Enjoy the fruits of your labor
Lucky to have your parents help
I’m definitely lucky and I’ve been enjoying the deck and garden already!
I’m starving now after seeing all that lovely food! Re the mess in the pool, I have a great black & decker that is both a lef blower and a vacuum, in vacuum mode it sucks up leafy debris and chops it up and into an attached bag that you can empty for mulch. It wasn’t dear, about £65. Your Mum looked less convinced re the various soupy things. With kiwis unless they are self
-fertile varieties you need a male & a female plant, might be worth checking what yours are. Your Dad’s deck is great.
Ooh that sounds like an interesting tool! I'm pretty sure the kiwis are a male and female but I might have lost track and screwed it up when I replaced a dead one last year. I wonder if there's a way to tell?
‘When determining the sex of kiwi blooms, the female will also have bright white, well defined ovaries at the base of the flower, which, of course, the males lack. The ovaries, by the way, are the parts that develop into fruit. Male kiwi flowers have a brilliantly colored yellow center due to its pollen bearing anthers’
Ah ok thanks! So far neither has made flowers but I’ll check!
I have a trumpet tree too. My mom had yellow, peach and white! There is a red but hard too fine!😊
Ooh I'd love to have more colours!
The deck and garden terrance looks awesome;
Thanks!
The plums don't all ripen at the same time so just pick them as they ripen to extend your harvest. For your lime tree infestation, you can try rapping tape turned sticky side out around the bottom of the trunk and that should take care of your ant problem. Also do the spray for the aphids. I add some neem oil to my soapy water solution as well as a bit of vinegar. Also works great on powdery mildew. You can try covering your young beans and brasicas with some fine mesh material until they get big enough. Your father has done an amazing job on the deck and your mom is a wonderful gardener 👍sure is nice of them to help you out. I'm sure they will be missed. Enjoy your time together building wonderful memories.
Thanks for the great tips! I've heard about the tape thing... seems like an easy solution to try though I think the soapy water has worked!
@@PortugalfromScratch there are also a variety of other plants that attract beneficial insects that help control the aphids like marigolds, savory, allysum,,,and many others. So your affected plants and trees will benefit if you plant these close by and throughout your garden. Otherwise the aphids will return. Happy gardening.
Regarding Tracey. It would be prudent to check whether she is a datura - highly poisonous member of the Nightshade family.. With what I have seen of her I think it is likely but it is hard to tell from the videos. It's all looking really good though. Your parents have been absolute troopers
Yes I know a bit about that plant and I don’t think it is.
what a difference
I know! I’m so happy!!
Action stations - all looks so fab and fun. Dad no galivanting hehe - great video. Garden is starting to look gorgeous.
I'm rooting for Tracey - pardon the pun hehe...
Thank you! Everything is coming together!
Yes it seems like people love concrete in most parts of the world and aren't looking for natural, creative options. Sometimes because they don't know how good they actually are! 😁 Thanks for watching!
@@PortugalfromScratch Eu tambem estou a procura de um terreno numa zona rustica para iniciar um pequeno projecto agricola e sair da zona de sesimbra e começar uma vida mais junto da natureza, felicidades!!
Best of luck in your search!!
Parents have done great work 👏 your Dads decking looks amazing, didn't realise you had Scottish heritage, sound like he from the west coast like me. Looking forward to the next video 👍🏴
Yep! He's from Glasgow originally. 🙂
Amazing progress. Looks amazing. Well done everyone. ❤ from NZ.
Thanks so much!
Kirsty, you must be so happy with all the process you have made. Nice having help once in awhile. Your parents and friends are amazing. Cheers
They really are and I couldn't be happier!
We get those spaceship clouds too quite often in our part of France and our area is also well known by alien spotters... a certain theme here!🤔😳
Ooh spooky! 👽
She lives! go tracy ❤
Woohoo!
The deck and garden area look amazing - we can really see the plan emerging now for that terrace. Everyone has worked so hard (if only we all had parents like yours). I was wondering if irrigation might be helpful for your fruit and veg given you are one person with way too much to do? The trumpet flower might like an olla pot, perhaps!
Thanks, I'm so lucky to have such great parents! Irrigation would make a big difference and I actually have some but need to install it. Soon I hope!
I just love your mom and dad. I really don't think your mom like all them soups.lol. She's very pretty
She is! I think it’s because most of the soups seemed to have a fish base… but she did like many of them!
Hi Robin Donna’s the prettiest and nicest person I ever met oh wait sorry Ma sorry Grannie, you know what I mean we’ve had a lovely life together so far and hopefully lots more to come
Hi Kirsty! Your Dad knocked the deck and stairs out of the park! Your Mom made the garden pretty and tidy. Kudos to them both. Loved the soup festival....why is it held in the Spring and not the Autumn? The shot of you guys bobble heading to the music at the soup festival made us laugh out loud. The last few videos have been so delightful to watch....lots accomplished, and your folks and friends were fun to see....esp. when your Dad rode off on the ebike and didn't return. Cheers from Ontario 🇨🇦🫶 p.s somehow I find it difficult to believe that you r cracking the whip on your folks 😂😂😂 just sayin'
Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos... my parents are the stars of the show, for sure!
@@PortugalfromScratch yes they are!
Some research suggests Tracy Trumpet is very toxic and should not be handled with bare hands. Just take care you two.
Thanks!
Brilliant progress Kirsty and great to see your Mum & Dad. Love the decking Willie and need you in my garden Donna 🥰 love from the Cubbies 🏴xxx
It's been wonderful having them here!
Hopefully see you all in September Linda
@@WilliamHenderson-gv4wk looking forward to catching up
Your land is looking great! Love the deck stairs too
They're amazing!
It looks like you just have lovely amazing parents⭐️ - so lucky you are! 😊☀️💚
I do and I definitely am very lucky!
Thanks a bunch though.
🙂
❤
😀
The tool of joy? lol!!!😅
Honestly, electric clippers are the best!!
@@PortugalfromScratch I could not resist the tease! Someday I’ll have a pair, probably would be voted best garden tool!
Please! I want them in everyone’s life!! 😀
Hi there, where did you get your fly beads for your front door? What is the actual name for them? Your parents are sweet hearts!
I got them from the Chinese shop... but I have no idea what they're called. I might have asked for fly screens and she took me to something else and then I clarified by miming. 😁
Have you considered insecticidal soap ? It's not a complete insecticide but rather a wash to get them off and a deterrent for a lot of bugs, it's toxicity is really low ... Just a thought
I hadn’t thought of that but thanks for the tip!
Looks great! Lots to do future projects. I'll only ask you for one favor which is limit your 360 degree camera spins. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks for watching!
Wow the time has gone so fast 😢 Hope your parents have a safe trip home (I know there is another video but I also realise they are behind probably at least a week).
Loved the fun part the music at the soup festival was great. Your Mum looked about as keen as I would be for the soup 😂
The Deck looks fantastic your Dad is a really hard worker 😊
Your Mum did a great job on the garden and saved Tracey wahoo 🎉
I know you will have been working hard to not sure why people assume you are just filming and doing nothing tho 🤔🙄😠
Looking forward to the next video take care and hugs from the very wet (as per usual 🙄) UK 😂
Uruguay
@@ManuelPineiro-dr1oc sorry ??
They're both incredibly hard workers and have been a huge help here. It's been fun but, you're right, it's gone so fast! One more video to go, I think. 🙂
The place is looking great!! My favourite shot was the four of you bopping your heads to the music at the Soup festival!
Haha ya it was a fun time!!
Great people
Yep, I’m very lucky!
Looking amazing ❤❤ what a difference from 2 yrs ago. 😮🍺🍺🍺🇨🇦
Thanks! I've had so much help and it's made all the difference!
Kirsty the place is looking fantastic...love what you are doing. You probably already know this but Kiwi need a male and female....mine took about five years to produce and then they took over everything so I pulled them out...LOL. Thanks for sharing your space and adventures...love them
Thanks! Yep I know that but I actually forget if I did that... I might have bought two of the same. I'm going to see if I can find a way to check. 🙂
Haha I feel ya. If it’s any help I don’t think the males flower much but that’s just my experience. My female kiwi was a prolific flowerer
Good to know, thanks!!
Coffee grounds help to keep some ants under control. The 2cm ant - beasts in my garden seem to hate coffee grounds.
2cm!! Yikes! Thanks for the tip. 🙂
Great job from all of you. Enjoy your weekend.
Thank you, you too!
🌟👍👏🍀💐
😁
Lovely parents🤗🥰
Yep!
Boas férias para seus pais!😊
Thanks!
Shade cloth for your lettuce as it warms will help prevent bolting and enhance/extend your dining pleasure !❤
P.s. your Mimi’s always stylin’. Love her hats, scarves, dresses, rompers etc 😊
Thanks for the tip! Yep she’s definitely fashionable! Unfortunately I didn’t get that trait passed onto me. 🤣
Or fortunately 😊
I saw a garden programme they said ants and aphids work together as a team. They said to stop the ants put a ring of ground cinnamon around the plants base. and the ants won’t go near that area. Can’t vouch whether it works as I havn’t tried it yet as we have had a lot of rain in UK.
Ooh that's an interesting idea, thanks!
I think Tracey will need a little extra water for a while until she is established….
Ok thanks for the tip!
Is Tracy Trumpet a Daytura Shrub?
I’m not sure…
It could be a datura or brugmansia. My guess would be the latter, but I really don't know.
Yes kemtek send her more stuff!
I’m pretty sure it’s a brugmansia.
❤️🥰
😀
Don't be so quick to add pipes to overflows that lead water away. Sometimes its not a bad idea to have a puddle forming as it lets you know that there is a problem. Unless, of course, overflow is a frequent occurrence.
The tank fills from an ever-flowing spring and so I want to be able to steer the overflow water down the land so that eventually I can collect it in other basins along the way. I do think having the water sink back into the ground is ok too, though. 🙂
@@PortugalfromScratch that is a good decision then. A leach field of sorts for you overflow may work well.
