She came and went and I went and came to Portugal in my truck 25 years back, turned up with 45 quid but I had brought my home with me, I had a portable trade and was willing to work hard, found sympathetic folk who let me occupy their land in exchange for labour, I gradually learned the language and the way of life, with a little help and a few years of juggling my life about I managed to secure some land with an old ruin on it, been living here full time since 2018 and even imported my 84 year old mum after building her a home, seemed like a much better place to be than England. Live your dream Lucy, its real, youre on a good path.

Hi, Loosely Wild. Nice plot of land. I hope it all goes well for you. The large white grub is a beetle larva, if I'm not mistaken. I've forgotten what type of beetle it is but they're harmless, not horrible. Interestingly, we have them here in parts of Australia as well.

Any country that drives on the left has the lowest number of accidents per capita, simply because 75% of people on this planet are right handed and so stronger on the right side of the bod and the right eye slightly stronger than the left. Hence is easier to cross traffic to turn right than it is to cross traffic to turn left, hence more accidents in countries that drive on the right. Shows you never went to school.

I lived in Cascais, Portugal for a year. Dreary winter with lots of rain and grey skies. Perhaps the other seasons are considerably warmer. Portugal is a gorgeous place to live though. I loved it.
Daft trick to buy land without seeing it first. It is an oak, a Holy oak or evergreen. Water, most important thing you need on land in Portugal. Fundoa is a decent spot to be. I am in Fornos just about an hour north of you. I take there is just you and the dog, so Welcome to Portugal. I take you intend to live as frugal as possible on your plot. I am a market gardener and grow all I can, also do all my own work on the house. If you ever need advise or help, then give me a shout and if you wish to view my 4.5 acres I would be happy to show you around. Barney is more than welcome to come with you.

For permanent residents you must have live stock like goats that need attention daily. The other thing, If you buy a bigger piece of land and it has no house, then you need 3.5 hct or you won't get planning. O and you can't build in forested areas. Make sure your new land when you decide to up grade has plenty water as irrigation here is a must. When you et moved in let me know then I'll invite you here to see my place where you will pick up a lot of tips. You'll need to fence your paddock to keep the wild boar out or they will eat all your veg.

You go girl! Exciting ... not knowing if you would like the property or not, but the sunshine does help. Happy for you. It's not easy, especially if you don't speak the language, but a lot of people do speak English in the Castelo Branco area. It takes time to overcome the new challenges that comes with the new environment, but well worth it. It gets easier once you have shelter, water and electric at Lucyland ... and of course local friends that are living the same lifestyle. Lovely land Lucy, well done you, it’s very exciting, on fires I understand you have to go on an local Portuguese council internet site, to let them know your having a fire, just in case it gets out of hand, so fire brigade know where to come, but no fires or power tools use in summer because of fires, yes you can build a tool building, not a bad size either about 12 x 10 feet, I think roughly, quite big I think, you could easy fit a sofa bed living area and kitchen in, your not allowed to put bathrooms in them tho, as then it’s seen as a home not a tool building, so plant some fruit and citrus trees they will appreciate everything from your compost toilet, wood pallet built solar shower with shower curtain, or mini bathroom in your caravan. The flat land area is ideal for building a property, plus the addition of fresh running water. With so much sunshine I would be using it for power from solar for all my electricity. Welcome to Portugal, Lucy and Barney. Hope you feel welcome in our country. Do take notice that there are different laws and regulations to be able to live in "rustic land" rather than in "Urban land". It depends a lot on the municipality and the size of the plot. Accordingly to the size you can request a permit to build a house that can assist on the farming, but if you are a registered farmer you can request special permits that will allow you to build your own house even if the plot doesn't have the minimum size allowed by the municipality. Do take time to engage with any specialist in "farming/farmer's" laws and regulations that can assist you. Someone wrote in the comments and well, some neighbors are not so friendly and it is only need a complaint to the municipality to put you in bad situation and in need to leave. Some foreigners come and buy, but without proper knowledge they have to sell and sketch new plans. Wishing you all the luck and hope you can win your place in Castelo Branco! See you around!

The water in Portugal is shared from the mountain top down to the valleys via levada systems , they cut a channel from the stream to water their crops and seal up again when finished . Good luck with your land .

It's a beautiful lot. I know feeling of owing a little land. You're on about 0.45 acres of land. I have a 0.6 off grid lot in the U.S. and it's plenty big for everything I've wanted to do on it, including building a shelter, a large garden, and an orchard with plenty of space left over. But I don't have a stream, so I collect rain water.
Well done! This is a real inspiration Loosely Wild. Looking at my costs in The UK at approx £1,000/mth, this option makes perfect sense. Buy a cheap 4 berth caravan in Scotland, drive it down (fuel costs £650) and then place it on land that you've bought , rent free. Electricity is solar and water can be collected off a top layer corrugated iron roof over the caravan. Makes sense! Great channel and Very inspirational! Thanks ;)

I've taken a look at a few plots already and had a few responses, Google Translate is my best friend atm ;) My thinking is somewhere north east of Porto closer to the Spanish border as the land there has more water. At 23:45 Lucy starts digging because she doesn't know the easy peasy no-dig method and wood chip mulching. That way doesn't expose the mycelium and spoil the fertility of the soil. Also those bugs you're moaning about are making your soil super fertile so embrace your bugs and be happy. Eventually one day getting a digger in and dropping charcoal 4 feet down (6feet is better) and human waste from compost toilets and wood and grass etc. and eventually the soil turns into terra preta. 😊 Grow artichokes the easiest tuber in the world, Morenga, broccoli, any all the usual favourites. Grow hemp for seed than turn seeds into creamy hemp milk. And cheese. Good strong taste. Also your fish in your pond will love the hemp seed butter. And the chickens. And the goats Eat micro-greens and juice them too. Super charge them with ozone and magnets and live forever. Build my trade mark design dome with underground fridge and jet pool. The water in Portugal is shared from the mountain top down to the valleys via levada systems , they cut a channel from the stream to water their crops and seal up again when finished . Good luck with your land .

It's a beautiful lot. I know feeling of owing a little land. You're on about 0.45 acres of land. I have a 0.6 off grid lot in the U.S. and it's plenty big for everything I've wanted to do on it, including building a shelter, a large garden, and an orchard with plenty of space left over. But I don't have a stream, so I collect rain water.
My dog does that , all the time. Gets the face on if i don't touch him lol 😊.
Well done! This is a real inspiration Loosely Wild. Looking at my costs in The UK at approx £1,000/mth, this option makes perfect sense. Buy a cheap 4 berth caravan in Scotland, drive it down (fuel costs £650) and then place it on land that you've bought , rent free. Electricity is solar and water can be collected off a top layer corrugated iron roof over the caravan. Makes sense! Great channel and Very inspirational! Thanks ;)

I've taken a look at a few plots already and had a few responses, Google Translate is my best friend atm ;) My thinking is somewhere north east of Porto closer to the Spanish border as the land there has more water. Also slightly closer to drive/ride to from Scotland! Keen to see how I can acquire the NIF, so awaiting your video on that :) Thanks again, you're very brave!
As a portuguese living outdoors, I can surely tell you that I can fully understand (and can even relate) with your wildly and beautiful nature! I mean, the sense of freedom, the constant adventure, and even the enjoyment about living overseas... And you really got an unique place, and a very interesting one, I must say! 😉 Gosh, I really wish that I could do the same, but at this point of my life, money issues turned a part of my reality! At 23:45 Lucy starts digging because she doesn't know the easy peasy no-dig method and wood chip mulching. That way doesn't expose the mycelium and spoil the fertility of the soil. Also those bugs you're moaning about are making your soil super fertile so embrace your bugs and be happy.
Eventually one day getting a digger in and dropping charcoal 4 feet down (6feet is better) and human waste from compost toilets and wood and grass etc. and eventually the soil turns into terra preta. 😊
Grow artichokes the easiest tuber in the world, Morenga, broccoli, any all the usual favourites.
Grow hemp for seed than turn seeds into creamy hemp milk. And cheese. Good strong taste.
Also your fish in your pond will love the hemp seed butter.
And the chickens. And the goats
Eat micro-greens and juice them too. Super charge them with ozone and magnets and live forever.
