- Big changes are happening on our Farm as our neighbour Joaquim comes to harvest the grasses to bale up for his sheep. Its the middle of Spring, its hot, and our farm is teeming with new life, spring chickens, and strange bugs that we have never seen before. My step dad Jeremy visits us from South Africa and finally gets to spend some quality time with us on the farm, but its not all good as we have some sad news too.

We are super lucky to have found a vet that can do this at our home, they are also very gentle and kind and made it all so much easier for us all
So very sorry your beautiful kitty is gone, you both gave her a long, happy life, the kindest passing, and now loving comfort to her heartbroken brother - you are the very best "pet parents" a kitty could hope for. Hugs

I’m so sorry you had to say goodbye to your beautiful cat. My son and I just had to make the same decision 1 week ago for our female 18 year old cat. Absolutely heartbroken, having difficulty her not being with us. The crying comes in waves from nowhere. I’ve heard our society is trained to think you need to get over it, move on, but they are part of the family and in no way is that easy. It shows how sensitive, caring and kind you both are to consider how your other cat is coping, and giving extra attention, cuddles etc. to help get over the loss. Thank you for sharing little bits of your down to earth lives with us and showing us how life is for you and your family in portugal. Look forward to more videos. Oh, your doggies are so cute and beautiful too! 🥰

So very sorry for you loss. She will be dearly missed. It's always hard to make the decision but it's in the animals best interest to do the humane thing. Last year we lost our 25 yo horse. He just snuck out during the night: went to sleep and never woke up. Found him in the morning, in the field. Hard on us but best thing for him, really. The year before (right before emigrating) we had to make the decision of having to put our 14 yo cat down. He went poorly in a week, he was already ill (cancer) but not in pain (according to the vet) and then all of a sudden he was like an ill child. Walk two meters and having to lie down. He had Acute kidney failure and was anemic. Still miss those guys.

Pets are family. So sad when they die. She had a wonderful life. We have had the time thing with two older dogs. So difficult for us. 💐❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thanks for sharing! Thanks also for explaining also that even as a small farmer (cutting all the grass) one impacts lots of small insects and animals. But because of the fire risk and if you want hay for the animals that is difficult to avoid.
Im going to try and leave some wild areas for them to live in where its not a risk and they can stay out of harms way :)

Sad news indeed, so sorry to hear about Nanook. We recently lost our cat of 18 years, never to be forgotten - even in old age she had the most beautiful eyes. A former cat, when her daughter was killed by a car, sat and shivered for two days, animals really do love each other. I know you'll help her brother with lots of extra loving. I’m so sorry to hear about Nanook. Our pets have often died in our arms. I think that is very comforting for the pets.
@virginiajorgensen8614 - It is the kindest thing we can do for our beloved pets, it takes courage, but it gives them a peaceful, loving passing.
Both DogDog and now Nanook passed away with us holding them and we are really grateful for that ❤

Hugs you guys, it's always hard to let them go, my cat was 24 and passed away suddenly 4 months ago, right after the vet declared him to be quite healthy for his age. He had a sudden massive heartattack.
@AnneHeyns - That must have been heartbreaking. He was a very lucky cat to have been so very well cared for, 24 years of loving companionship is truly remarkable.
Oh wow thats really sad to hear. 24 is really old for a cat, thats so impressive that he lived such a full life!
@@OKportugal It is old for most cats but the oldest alive now is 29 - lives in England and the oldest that ever lived was 38 years and 3 months and he died not so long ago.

@@AnneHeyns wow that's really impressive. Our poor old Nanook only managed 16 but she had a lot of recurring pancreas issues from birth. At least now she is at peace 🙏

I love Cats actually dogs too but I have lost both of cats and dogs I liken it to loss of a son or daughter there is always an empty space somehow it pulls at your very essence, time is the great healer .

I can remember tractors and mowers like that from my childhood. Now in the UK all tractors have to have cabs or roll bars and mowers have to be encased for safety reasons.

A guy died yesterday in Sertã when a tractor fell over. Roll bars are a good thing!
@@gaillithgow2765 That is so sad and yes, I think they are a good thing. Curiously, I thought it was part of EU regulations, not just health and safety, that these rules were implemented. That's why I was surprised to see tractors and mowers without them. How I remember them from my long distant youth growing up on a farm.

I'm so sorry for your loss. When you've been with a cat for such a long time, it's hard to say goodbye. I had to have my cat Oi! put down after 20 years a couple of weeks ago and I still miss him, especially in the small things. Him not being on the table when I come in the room in the morning, not telling me to prepare his dinner NOW .... But as he had lost his eyesight, hearing and was struggling with arthritis (I think it's called), kidney problems getting worse, he was not enjoying life anymore. And as hard as it is, better a month too early than a day to late.
@WhiteRvssian2023 - Deepest sympathy, it's heartwrenching to have to make that decision, even when we know it is the kindest choice for our pet. That your cat had 20 years of a happy life shows what wonderful care you give your beloved pets.
Aah i'm so sorry to hear it. 20 is a very impressive age for a cat! They do leave a big hole in our lives when they go!

Yes it does resemble a cicada. I managed to find it on google image search and they call it a jewel beetle here.

Yes, absolutely don't go to Portugal as I need a place for myself in the not too distant future. Jeremy is very concerned about the upcoming elections and considering selling up and joining us over here. It would be great to have them close by, but a big move for them, away from their friends and lives back in SA. Its a big move for sure.
@@OKportugal yes, we are indeed worried too. My little grandson has just turned 7, can't see a meaningful future for him. It's almost impossible to buy land to become self sufficient. I wanted to immigrate to Portugal around 2007, but my husband wasn't keen, now I regret not pushing. But want to start finding out how to go about it now. You have made the right decision. We had to do it our German shepherd many years ago, when she became very ill, (kidneys stopped working). YOu did the right thing, think of how long she lived and what a wonderful life she had with you.
Thank you. It was really difficult to do because we got so used to seeing her struggle and then looks so much better the next day. But we both feel that we did the right thing and even the vet took a very good look at her and agreed. I am sorry to hear of your dog. All the best to you

Everyone who buys one big farm should bring food to the market, or what you do with Joaquim is Ok.... no land should be bought, and just keep that without bringing anything to the market, it should not be allayed... anyway, one day it will be not enough food for português people.... and the life itself will be very very expansive. To bay big farm and not to do anything to contribute to the market... so it is better to leave the farms abandoned and free ( not fancet or closed) so wild animals and cheeps will have food for survival....
We grow grass on our fields to feed our neighbours sheep. We harvest our grapes and give them to our neighbours to make wines. We harvest our olives, give half to our neighbours, and share the rest with friends and family for oil. I'm not sure I agree with you saying that "everyone who buys a farm" should be forced to do something... I like being free and being able to live my life the way that I choose.

It really pains me to see agricultural land wasted, without producing food for the market. Portugal only has 80% to 85% food autonomy, as it imports many cereals and oilseeds.
Why is this property not productive, when we have more and more tourists and immigrants living in Portugal?
The government should make a law that requires the exploration of these fertile fields.
I'm confused at your comment because we grow lots of produce on our farm.
We grow grasses on our fields in the Winter and Spring, which we harvest just before the Summer time. The haybales from our fields feed our neighbours flock of dairy sheep. Their milk produces a famous cheese called Queijo da Soalheira. Maybe you've heard of it?
We harvest our olives and share the oil with our friends, family & neighbours, and we harvest our vineyards to produce a wine along with our neighbours.
Your question "why is this property not more productive when we have more tourists and foreigners living in Portugal" makes no sense at all.
A property being productive is not linked to tourism and foreigners in any way.
Your use of English terms like "it really pains me" suggests that you have spent time abroad... Hopefully you live by example and produced lots of food while living abroad, and I hope you weren't subjected to too much ignorance and xenophobia from locals blaming all of their problems on foreigners too ;)
Wishing the government to take more control over your life is not wise. Maybe one day you will see :)
Do you have fly straps in Portugal? As I recall you have flytaps hanging from your fruit trees near the house. Your lawn is looking great. If you cut it high, it will retain more moisture and stay green longer. From what I have seen in other vids, as a farmer you can get a bore hole done by the government program for practically free. Seems crazy to go from too much water to drought like conditions every year. Of course, the fact is that the world is burning up. So cheer up mate.
So sorry to hear about the kitty. 🥲 We have a Persian cat (Max), he's 17. Max is not doing do well, we hope for the best, but we may have to make the same decision about the vet visit.
