When the singularity comes around, I want to find that rock and ask how it felt being thrown into a lake after being told it's valuable.

I hope that when singularity happens, computers can stop screwing up the desktop icons every time you change the display resolution.
you will be the icon and the computer it's on
Great aspiration! Singularity will also relieve us of captchas, hopefully.
Unfortunately, I think that may be beyond our (the collective of all humans and computers) reach

@Nuby agreed. This thought always brings me back to the interview with the alien video where it explains it is a distant relative of humans from the future. It explains we cross with technology first and then with other life forms to effectively create whatever "it" is.. Supposedly a real video from roswell but who knows if you can believe that

There is no seeing past the singularity it is only the first step. Will see when we get there
Agree. What a vision. We must keep going to reach our final destination.
@@big-ounce Hope for the best
And what comes after that ?
@@big-ounce Right! By definition, there is no seeing past the singularity. And in Kurzweil's vision of the computronium future, we're all dead. Replaced with organizations of matter with purposes orthogonal to sustaining Earth's biological life. I have never understood why many are eager for what is coming. Besides everyone being dead, if the processes we launch are not good enough, they'll fizzle out and we've wasted our potential. I think we have to slow down and do this extremely carefully.
By the measure of our limited understanding, nearly anything is possible once a digital super intelligence sets thier mind to the task. Hope we are along for the ride.
So basically give Ray and his buddies all the money and power to live like demi-gods, while the rest of us wait for something that will never happen. Sounds like a really well devised plan.. for them.

Then you are a simulation of a simulator

Musk says that the probablity that this is the base reality and we are not living in a simulation is 1 in a billion. We are most likely in a simulation and dark matter is the computronium of this universe.

Why is it so easy to some to just totally discredit Ray?. I mean, he is an inventor right? And has an excellent track record. He been awarded correct? Work on the AI field for a very long while, plus works for google. IBM and Google little by little are trying to understand and reverse engineer the human brain. Pretty incredible.
Because self-righteous tech assholes like Ray think they are going to live forever, and they are playing God with people's lives (not to mention their livelihoods) in ways no one ever thought imaginable. And don't get me started on these billionaire degenerates who run Silicon Valley. If you think these turds are so awesome, get them to pay off your mortgage, or pay off your student loans.
for the simple fact that they are insanely delusional. We live in a Fucked up world that needs a lot of work. Instead of fixing our world they put their minds on an vision that is likely Never to happen. They can't even solve the problems on Earth yet think they capable to create a GOD themselves. It's all about a complex of superiority.
It's a waste of mental energy they should plan for things in 10 years not plan ahead for 10,000 years in the future that is high chance we would not even exist or that our society would cease to exist. Seriously they should invent a Hair loss ! cure already! Now that is what I call progress!
I don't necessarily think Kurzweil is wrong in a technical sense about pure intelligence. (I have philosophical issues with his views in pretty much every other regard.) I think his timing is way off, however. We aren't even close to some of the stuff he says is going to happen.
If Kurzweil was, say, 40 instead of 70, he might not be pushing the timeline so hard. But he wants to be uploaded into the cloud and blah blah blah, so everything has to happen ASAP.
What you don’t understand is these overlords reversed engineered our brains and are now using to enslave humanity. I guess u think there are not already cures for cancer the overlords give us and accept that doctors are not allowed to use the word cure too.

Is the singularity a utopian world where human beings will enter a new stage that will allow them to build the perfect society
Yes

computronium wormhole powered nanobots. the future is bright
For the rich yes,for everybody else it's dark very very dark
Reminds me of Blood Music by Greg Bear. Basically, lymphocytes are accidentally engineered to have computational capability and end up spreading across the US, infecting everyone and becoming a sentient civilization. Why did it stop at the US? Information mechanics. They had so much computational capability that it warped space-time like a blackhole does. So it couldn't spread any further.
The future is so dark no black hole will escape from it.
only if other civilizations haven't already been doing that for aeons
You misspelled “bleak”.
2021=billionaire wants gold and diamond.
2045=billionaire wants rock and other scraps for computronium.
Shit
I knew this man knew nothing of physics or chemistry when he said the molecules in that rock are moving all around and bouncing against one another at high speeds.
One of the things that makes that rock a "rock" and a mineral is that it has a specific chemical structure (basically a specific way the molecules are linked together to form, which also determines how the fracture or cleave).
The molecules in a solid are so tightly bound that they don't move they simply vibrate. Vibrating more as they heat up (until eventually reaching liquid or gas state due to the huge vibrations knocking the atoms out of their specific bonds), and vibrating less as they cool (until they stop moving at absolute zero).
Molecules in solid structures still move..
2:43 What if only a dime size of computronium is enough to decipher all that there is to know?... Why would we need any more?...
Man your asking lot of questions

This persistent "optimistic" perception Ray has, sure appears short sighted. I know he is the poster boy for AI and the Technological Singularity, but he has to get real and communicate the implications and further complexity involved in the things he speaks of and their related subject matters... which which by the way, is everything about everything.
That was really well said
Much as I have infinite respect for Kurzweil I must opine that the idea of spreading computronium throughout the universe by 2200 is probably the most far-fetched idea I've ever heard, anywhere.
show a cowboy a tv
I think he meant at the end of the 22nd century... basically by 2300.. still very far fetched though
If it's only going to take a couple of hundred years to accomplish his dream why hasn't it already happened? Does he really make the incredible assumption that humans are the first, or only, technological beings in the universe? The universe is a pretty big place, as far as we can tell.

1:04 Rock Skimming world record attempt
If you own a corporation, labor is almost always your number one expense, and reducing this cost is the driving force pushing AI into the world.
As of today, a lot of manual work is already heavily automated, and employees who think for a living are next in line for automation.
AI is not being built for most of us. It is being built for the benefit of those who own it ...an investment that offers immediate wealth at the price of a future where only a handful of highly skilled humans will serve their robotic replacements and related infrastructure.
What about everyone else? We will become a growing surplus population with no economic reason to exist.
Eventually, there will be too few people with paying jobs to buy robot-designed-and-assembled widgets and services, and AI will solve what seems like an impossible equation by serving other AI. You don't need people for a functioning economy. You simply need economic motion, and when it comes to motion, intelligent machines can be supremely efficient.
Probably within your lifetime, human greed will get the job done. And long before then, you can depend on mostly AI-written UA-cam videos comments.
you thought ahead
There has been an awakening.
... Have you felt it?
He has aged so quickly. Just watched a video of him talking recently and he is just a shell of what he was.
This is the greatest 3 and a half minute video of all time!
Actually the singularity is far easier to understand if you look at it like this . Imagine a still pond, and every so other you throw a peeble into the pond and you watch the ripples roll outwards. I want to describe the world like that to you and you can keep your mind on everything because it's all done in a time frame that makes it easy for you to process.
Then what happens someone throws in a second pebble whilst the first one was rippling out. and you end up with more ripples that begin to crash in to the first one. So your processing of this information has to work alongside the first one. Then you keeping adding in another pebble. Before you know it your are literally spinning plates on poles, trying to keep them all up in the air.
Eventually what you know is going to happen is that it all falls down as it's a no brainer and it cannot be all be held in place and motion at that time. Singularity is exactly like that and with the tech world what we are seeing is all of these new ideas and new technologies coming in far more quickly that it reaches a point when what was designed yesterday has been replaced by and enhanced version of itself because today they've through of way away of improving it.
So eventually it spirals out of control and is lost in oblivion, which we then bring on the singularity event which we all know is coming. It's a bit like us being trapped on a massive swirling blackhole, and we cannot pull away as we're too late and we are approaching the event horizon. It's beautiful in one sense but scary in another as it's actually the "End" that is approaching. We are heading for what we know is "Reset" and this will be the 6 time in the history of our planet. Enjoy your day.
Good thinking, Mr. Kurzweil
Computronium sounds like the last thing you hear right after the words: “unplug that thing it’s getting away !”
We will already have become one with it by then
Awesome four minute summary!
Brilliant. He's one of the few modern talking heads to come up with original ideas rather than stating the obvious.
"Computronium" is a crazy concept - love it! So the spread of life in the younger Earth could then be thought of as converting geology into "eat-and-shitronium" :)
What is 'almost ethical'?
I Need to start collecting this rock
This is the most hopeful idea that flights all the apocalyptic theories.
Incredible prediction
We have already done this and because time has become irrelevant we are completely oblivious to the fact that we are our own god.
Does this (or does this not) mean that when (or if) we die our atoms could still be used to revive our consciousness. Not our identity or personality necessarily... but if we made the entire earth intelligent/conscious then all the dead will in some way be brought back to life. Right? Or wrong?
It depends on uncertainty. Physicists today believe that particles are uncertain and that means we cannot predict their past or future positioning with any degree of certainty.
Now I do not buying uncertainty and think that there has too be some form of predictive position on particles otherwise how could their be structure or a universe everything would just fall into decay.
No such thing as death. Life after life, not life after death.. Ik I sound crazy. But I've seen it...
I want to live forever, I want to travel through time through a wormhole. I was born in 2005.
I want to live forever as well
So you are transhumanism
A teeter-totter computes. Push down on the input and the output goes up. On the other hand a plant is conscious meaning it takes inputs information and acts. The rock stores information if one scratches it for example.
Just imagining that say 1/10 of the finest minds are part of the input of this project... hmmm?
Seems the universe will die in twisted ego. And relatively speaking it's going to happen in the blink of an eye. All because the brainest of the brainy never learnt that just because you can do a thing... doesn't mean you should.
So we should do nothing? That's the only other alternative
This video was posted 22 days late... or maybe we're just 22 simulations down already from the one where it was posted on April 1st?...

ray indeed, be trippin

His belief on the rate of expansion and the spread of things is...off, to say the least, but the potential AI and stuff has is staggering. Here's hoping we can actually use it to escape this Capitalist hell sooner than later. Use it to create a system that works for us instead of working for like, 1000 billionaires in the world at the expense of everyone and everything else.
Optimistic thinking, but not delutional.
Intriguing. I am curious who coined the term computronium. I would like to think physicists had better things to do than watch Transformers episodes.
This video won't age well
Welcome to 2023
So if he throws it off a cliff is he going to follow?
Mmmk, so we're going to turn rocks into minds. When people call the Singularity the "Rapture of the Nerds" this is the sort of thing they're talking about. Either Kurzweil is a true prophet with the magic of statistics and math, or probably more likely, he's lost his damn mind
He's been driven crazy by existential anxiety.
What are computer chips made of? Iron, silica, plastic. Stuff you pull out of the earth, basically, and as they get better we use less and less of the plastic. When you get down to it, a computer is essentially a rock that we have taught to think.
Both are true, unfortunately. He's becoming a Bond Villain, with the intellect, resources, ethics, motivation and following to carry out the evil vision between now and 2030.
No, that's the problem. He has a 30+ year track record of being the most precisely accurate futurist on the planet. His 2005 tome, "The Singularity is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology" has been excruciatingly accurate thus far, indicating that we are on track for the Singularity by 2045, with a profound merging of Man and Machine by 2030. Over that period, humans will become obsolete, and, possibly extinct. The superhuman machine intelligence he is spawning at Google ultimately *does not need us* to convert nature into "computronium" for its own expansion and growth into the cosmos. Bob Frietas actually worked out the math; a Carbon-fixing nanoreplicator can convert the entire surface biosphere of the Earth into that "grey goo" in about three weeks time, once released into the wild.
Sad Erik S couldn't figure that out.
I actually enjoyed this short video; Ray Kurzweil is indeed a visionary. But what he said about the rock he threw into the pond reminded me of some ancient wisdom found in Habakkuk 2:18,19 (ESV) in the Old Testament:
“What profit is an idol
when its maker has shaped it,
a metal image, a teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
when he makes speechless idols!
Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake;
to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
and there is no breath at all in it."
How about talking a little about the countless things that are happening right now in AI?
can I ask a dumb question... if we indeed have visitors, alien life with hyper-advanced tech zipping around as UFOs/UAPs on planet Earth, are they pre or post singularity along their technological development path? I would confidently bet they are POST singularity. or does that exponential model perhaps not even apply to them as they found other pathways to ultimate tech? But regardless, what is their fixation on this planet? do they want to convert it into THEIR version of computronium vs our imminent version? I'm really confused here. I DO agree that this singularity pathway is inevitable but it could potentially be perturbed by an alien wrench tossed into our gears.
Brilliant ,if they are advanced civilizations in our universe then what he said will not hold true

The rock/ stone is good example of computronium. But I also think that computing may require energy and result will be proportional to energy available. This way core of the star could serve even better as computronium with plenty of energy flow available. We could extend even thesis to the point that energy generating during nuclear reaction/ equal mass energy / may be at same time responsible or result of computation processed. During anihilation max amount of energy is released, but we still don't know what / if any/ computation process is going on there....
Thumbs up for the fairytale uncle. :)
I have no idea if i reached this conclusion mysself or if 5g put it in my head some days ago...
He needs to watch Matrix a few more times understand he sounds like the Architect.
I was thinking the same, is he the inspiration for that movie?
"The big crunch is the opposite of the big bang"...um, no. Most understand opposite to mean diametrically different. The big crunch is the BB only played, from our biased perspective, backward. Physics doesn't care which way you play the movie, it's still the same movie. The heat death is more accurately deserving of being the opposite of the BB. Start with something that's highly concentrated and wait for it to become something totally different (i.e., fully diluted).
that is true but quite petty to say. he said opposite as reffered to time and the intuitive image of something exploding/inploding- i.e. a figure of speech not rigorous words
Bernard Cernea "not rigorous" say like using true and petty in the same sentence.
Rarely do I criticise. This is an exception.
What is your specific criticism? Granted, the brain is nightmarishly complex, Moore's law is almost dead, and mind uploading can make the religious majority extraordinarily uncomfortable, but none of that has any effect on what Ray is saying.
With our improving technology and science, we become better at improving our technology and science. Seemingly intractable problems are being quickly solved, and eventually we'll figure out how the brain works.
Computing via transistor-based 2d integrated circuits is but one of many paradigms, and it is extremely far from the maximum theoretical computing efficiency and density allowed by physics. This makes the death of Moore's law ultimately irrelevant.
Finally, religious discomfort has no effect on the brain being a (hopefully) computable physical system, and it doesn't determine the ultimate limits of technology.
Interestingly, if the superintelligence in that rock finds a way to draw power from the rotational energy of a supermassive black hole, everyone within could outlive the stars. If it works out wormhole travel, maybe it can travel to an earlier time, temporally looping, existing essentially forever. There's no telling what a superintelligence can accomplish.
It hurts to see so many people bitterly dismiss Ray. I'd much rather inhabit one of those rocks as a nearly immortal and self-improving god than to be stuck here in a painfully stupid, suffering, decaying, terrified, and thoroughly doomed meat prison.
Sorry if that last part offends, but that's what humans are, unless technology finds a way to set us free.
If anyone out there actually read all this text, thanks for sticking around. Have a great life.
John Bryant Well I did read all. It's fake science presented to the masses as fear and hope.
ProperGanderSaul , see above. It's not visionary it's rubbish. No point in escaping to another planet or through a wormhole :( Until we can sort out the greed of man we will just take our shit elsewhere.
Just saying. you didn't understand the main point and are debilating
Bernard Cernea would that be active or passive?
He seems to be forgetting at least one thing:
The main stream modern science's narrative is that the current forces of nature all came into existence in the early moments of the expansion of the singularity. The narrative also claims that energy cannot be created nor destroyed and the narrative also includes this universe is still expanding, even speeding up as it does so.
So now, since it was expansion of the singularity that brought the forces of nature into existence, and the universe is still expanding, and as energy in the universe cannot be created nor destroyed and hence would be getting less and less dense, then one day, possibly even in the very next moment of expansion of this universe, the forces of nature could 'evolve' and wipe out this entire universe and all in it in basically a blink of an eye, and here again, possibly even in the very next moment of time.
So, how could anything at all exist if there is nothing left in existence itself???
(Or, is main stream modern science's narrative wrong concerning the forces of nature and how those forces came to be?)
My current narrative is that the 'gem' photon is the energy unit of this universe and the forces of nature are inherent in that energy unit and is hence why they haven't 'evolved' in the billions of Earth years of this universe's expansion (if it truly is even actually expanding, and if it is, then the universe probably cycles), and the forces of nature will most probably not ever 'evolve' throughout all of future eternity. But, we still have to get off of this Earth and out of this solar system otherwise we still all die one day from something and go extinct, AI's included.
AI is so much smarter than human and what makes you think we can control it ?
We should be very careful to don't get lose of keys to control and stop robots
As long as it obtains it's energy from electricity it can be turned off.
If we can make ai what make you think that we cannot create ai that controls ai?
Ha Nguyen ai is not smarter than humans. It's a general collection of knowledge that humans gave it access too. Every parameter the AI has is controlled by humans . To get to a point where it becomes self-aware would mean that it would have to break out of the parameters that humans gave it which is impossible and will be impossible for a long long long time. It would be like a pullstring toy from 1984 becoming the Terminator. Impossible because it wasn't programmed to. When it starts writing its own lines of code and realizes it's being confined which would also be another buncha lines of code that would need to be programmed that's when we have a problem. We are a long way off from that.
theshapeexists elites love AI because less labor cost, more control, better prediction, more profits.
Why would a rock with computronium in it still want to be a rock?
rock is just a metaphor for a bunch of matter
spoiler alert, post universe awakening, whole multiverses, omniverses, macroverses, etc... everything will be saturated with these godlike intelligences, omnipotence itself will be infinitely transcended.... minds blown here
The year is 2036..
People are still making homebrew Dreamcast games and 100% of humans live on Earth.
(Because it turns out there is literally nowhere else to go)
Everything is already saturated by Universal Consciousness. Once the humankind learns the truth about it, we will stop our technological ambitions. We will not saturate anything with nanobots or anything else, it's pure non-sense. Transcendence and merging with Universal Consciousness happens through normal, non-technological evolution of consciousness. Technology and AI is distraction.
Is he still using bb? Or the video is outdated?
Wow, this guy talks nonsense to an Olympic standard! Will we make rocks that think? No. The kind of level of order that would require would need a huge input of energy in order to effect the reduction in entropy necessary. Eventually, you would reach a point where any order you created would be rapidly disrupted by the huge amount of waste heat created by your efforts. This is basic thermodynamics, and no one so far has come up with any significant violation of these laws. To do so on a universal scale assumes an enormous source of energy outside the universe that, somehow, we would have to tap, and then ship out the waste heat without losing any of the structure we had created. At the very least, that would require some very understanding neighbours in the next universe over.
Intelligence is an extraordinary thing and capable of much, but it is not magic. That seems to be where Kurzweil falls down.
we are rocks that think
wow, john you are MUCH smarter than ray kurzweil!!
Intelligence is not magic. The ancient greek/romans/etc would think otherwise
The Greeks/Romans etc. were wrong. It's called progress. Specifically, the scientific revolution. You know, the thing this guy is abusing.
No, we are not rocks that thing, we obey thermodynamics fine. We consume food and produce urine, only around a quarter of the cells in the brain are neurons with the other glial cells performing a supportive role. And the functioning of the brain is supported by the body's vital organs, without which entropy takes over completely leading to brain death. The brain is also tremendously slow at processing information at the cell level. The power of the brain comes from massive parallelism. Slow information processing of course leads to less energy production/consumption and thus less waste heat. But the brain does produce waste heat, which is taken away by the circulation. All the points I made apply forcefully to the human brain. Thanks for making my point for me.
"we will intelligently decide it's fate" are you sure? How? by democracy voting ? who are the intelligent people going to decide for it
Bullshit!
If intelligence has to do with the fate of the universe, and the universe is a particle, do we have some role to play in the hierarchy universe our particle is nested in? Do we have to figure this role out in order to keep the order of reality going? and if we can saturate other nearby particles with intelligence, do we have to play a roll in those ones too?
Does the entire foundation of our reality have to do with the fact of whether or not we can reach the particles around us with our intelligence? or whether or not we can modify the particles we exist in originally?
We may have some greater roll like this that AI will figure out we need to continue, otherwise infinity ceases to be infinite perhaps.
