I've been researching natural plasters and have almost everything to start making practice boards. Just saw your DIY easel and that was my missing piece, I will be making one these days and hopefully start on the weekend with some boards. I'd recommend you taking a look at a book called "Clay and Lime Renders" by Katy Bryce, and "The Nito Project" here on youtube, both are filled with traditional and eco-friendly plastering techniques if you ever feel like experimenting with natural finishes. You guys make nice videos, keep it up.
Glad you found our DIY easel video. You should definitely make one for practicing! Thanks for the recommendations. I checked out "the nito project" which has some cool stuff! Keep Plastering! 👍
You can essentially use any flat board to practice. If it’s raw wood, it’s good to prime it first to seal it in since the plaster will absorb things. You don’t have to use quartz primer but it is the recommended route for medium to thicker plasters.
How long do you usually have to wait between layers when it is on a wall? I know all situations would be different, but is it in the range of a few hours or a few days?
You want to make sure coats are completely dry. If I'm applying plaster to a room I'd usually wait 1/2 to 1 day before applying second coat. Like you said, it really depends on your situation. If you are applying a thinner plaster, it could be quicker. Your first coat of plaster should look pretty uniform in color and usually drys lighter than when you applied it.
You don't have to burnish but some plasters will still look matte even when you burnish it. It's up to you. For stencil work, I've seen some people use metallic plasters over the top of normal plaster to get a metal look. You can find that here - bit.ly/metallic-plasters They also have a full rust and patina system under their OXIDIZERS products if thats more of the angle you are looking to go. Hope this helps.
