3:06 that’s honestly so important in such a chaotic environment! Thank you for thinking of the horses and not just what people want from them ❤

Always try to see them without a saddle! You'll see all kinds of stuff sometimes physically. Plus some horses are hard to saddle lol.
Assume sellers aren't telling the truth, don't go into pens with the horses without seller there. Good way to get hurt.
Also assume the age stated is wrong, yes even on coggins.
For auction newbies, ALWAYS assume the horse is going to get sick within the next 30 days.
So if you buy one, PLEASE keep separate from any other horses for 30-45 days: no nose touching, close air breathing.
Make the auction horse last one you touch and use separate tools, dispose of manure separately far away and don't spread it anywhere.
I take step further and use nitrile gloves and separate coveralls and boots that stay there.
Many auction horses get "shipping fever" which can be anything from upper respiratory to strangles. Incubation is up to 14 days.
Sometimes a whopping double dose of penicillin (40cc) as soon as you get them home can help them fight it off or it not be severe.
For context, I've been doing this for 45 years.

First time to your channel and I enjoyed this! I particularly appreciate that you can spot and describe issues including possible causes and prognosis. I've felt bad for bidders who I surmised were inexperienced and hadn't noticed details that indicate a metabolic history of founder, conformation faults almost guaranteed to lead to lameness, etc. That takes a good eye and despite decades with horses I can't claim any talent for seeing things that aren't immediately obvious. Your ability to see and describe these things has a high value for those of us still in the life long process of building our knowledge.
I was a fan of the Percheron cross. What was I not seeing? She's a beauty, stout - very surprising that she didn't sell. And the horse that threw in a few bucks... Hard to tell if that was about attitude or an underlying issue with pain. More experienced hands than myself have guessed that a horse that only single bucks instead of going bronc for a longer period indicates a pain issue. They're protesting, but don't want to bronc because it worsens their pain. I have no idea if that's yet another cowboy myth or factual, but having heard this caused it to come to mind in the case of that horse.
The equine market can be cyclical. I recall prices being very high in '99, then diving to ridiculous fire sale prices in 2000, 2001(?) along with the stock market sell off. I attended an auction in 2000 and expected a particularly nice and well bred AQHA sorrel colt I'd met out back to be the high seller. I had no intention of actually buying a colt, but when his price started to stall in the mid 700 dollar range I was stunned. I jumped in and when I won the bid at 825 I doubted the seller would take that for a colt that would have been in the range of 5K a year earlier, but he did! (850 wouldn't nearly cover the stud fee alone) He's been mine ever since and, "Not for sale at any price." He'll be 26 in May and is my retired treasure. Anyway, I've taken the long way to wonder if the weirdly low prices could be explained by another fall in the cycle. I think a lot of people who'd normally be in the market are presently struggling with this run away inflation.
Enjoyable and helpful content here. Like & Subscribed!

So glad you liked the video! I’m always working on increasing my horse knowledge- and documenting and sharing what I’ve learned with others is one of my great passions in life :) There’s always more to learn, which is why I find it so fascinating!
As for the Percheron cross, I’m guessing the reason she didn’t sell must’ve been the clientele at the auction that day. Most people living in the area seem to be casual trail riders and farmers in need of working cattle horses. I’ve found that QHs, saddle horses, and Tennessee Walkers tend to sell the best at this particular location, and that drafts and draft crosses tend to be much less popular. I didn’t see anything glaringly wrong with any of the drafts that day, but most of them no sale’d or sold extremely low because of the low interest from the crowd.
And for the horse that bucked and got antsy, it’s hard to say. I didn’t get to put my hands on him to really check him out before the auction began, so I wouldn’t be able to tell if he had underlying pain causing him to protest. It could be that he’d never experienced an environment like that and needed to channel that pent up anxiety somewhere, it could be due to poor tack fit, or like you suggested it could definitely be pain related. Your theory on bucking only once or twice sounds like it could definitely hold water! Unfortunately, I just don’t have a straightforward answer for you since I didn’t get the chance to feel his back and legs that day 🤷🏽‍♀️
I sure hope the horse market as a whole starts to take a turn for a bit cheaper pricing again! For a while now, I feel like even lame and retired horses have been going for upwards of $5,000! And in my opinion that’s just way too much for a pasture pet.
Thanks so much for your comment and for the subscribe! It really makes my day to see someone engage with my videos like this!

Great video. I'm in California and monthly we have a night auction. Very surprised by the prices especially the black and white paint going as high as it did. I would of snatched up that appy.

Yeah, I definitely wasn’t expecting that piebald to sell so high, but I guess that just goes to show that people will pay more for flashy colors even if the horse has an injury or conformation fault… 🤷🏽‍♀️
Both the pregnant App and the other young App were so pretty! I would love to see the mule baby the first one is supposed to be having. Thanks for watching and for your comment!! 😊

The one you said was thin was probably just their breed but idk. Love auction vids and seeing all the different horses

If ydk, why offer an opinion? No horse is thin because of its breed; it's underfed.

I'm honestly cannot wait for more horse terminology videos, like with the terms discipline and classes. Someone tried explaining it to me, but I still didn't get it. I keep thinking about Tennessee Walking Horse breed and to my own knowledge, they have Flat Shod disciplines, but thanks to those, and I'm not blaming them, who call it Flat Shod classes, I believe that's is what is causing the confusion for me. The same thing with Flat classes, such as Hunter Under Saddle because I feel like it's one of those English riding disciplines people do at horse shows.
Actually, when I think about it, a video on horse disciplines and classes, just those two, should be the next video, with proper examples and explanation that is easy for it to be understood a lot better. Or you can use them for whenever you make your horse terminology videos.

I like the horse with black and white spot like the cow even though you say he has back problems hes very pretty. He sold for very much money although he was injured?

Yeah he seemed like a patient, sweet, horse :) His coat was also super pretty, I agree! I think he might’ve sold so high because of his coloration tbh

They broke my heart to see some of the ones that needed love the most, and unfortunately get overlooked. I could never go to one of these because I would have to save all the underdogs. Just breaks my heart.😞

I've been to one of these before in Virginia. They had a very old Tennessee Walker I asked about. Dude was too big but forced her to gait. I asked if there was a current Coggins and there wasn't. Even though a current Coggins is required. How did he slip this horse in without a current coggins? Do these auctions look the other way depending on who's doing the selling? It was such a sad horse.

    • @NocturnalEquestrian
      @NocturnalEquestrian  8 місяців тому

No idea about that one you went to! This one says they require coggins as well although I haven’t bought a horse from Southside myself. The folks at this place are usually pretty nice and straightforward when I ask them questions and the prices usually end up being pretty fair. As with all auctions though, it’s always a risk buying without a vet check so it’s good to be aware!

Horses as money making commodities. It's sickening. I have been to one horse auction and was so distressed that I have never been again. We enslave our domestic animals. They have no choice in their lives, yet they are intelligent, sentient beings. Humans make me sick, how they treat animals.
