I always love seeing new Banjo-Tooie content, it’s overshadowed so much by BK despite the massive amount of new features and content it provides. Both games are absolutely incredible and the best titles on the N64 imo (as well as Conker’s Bad Fur Day).

I remember six-year-old me crying when Bottles died, when Jingaling became a zombie, at learning the gray Jinjo family died, and at having to kill the ice cubes.
Additional Dark Aspects that didn’t make the cut:
1. Roysten is actually Bottles’ overcooked dinner at the end of Tooie, too...somehow, he makes a miraculous recovery in Nuts & Bolts!
2. "Don't leave me in here. They beat me at night!" - Gobi, when speaking to him as Banjo alone in the Witchyworld Cave of Horrors (Tooie)
3. Witchyworld is a killer amusement park with a signpost reading "Anyone who rides all the quality attractions and survives are entitled to join the Witchyworld Fan club. Current Club Members - 0." Witchyworld may have been inspired by Action Park, a negligent amusement park that was closed down due to at least six people dying from the unsafe rides
4. Terry the pterodactyl jokes about wanting Kazooie to blow up one of his babies with a Grenade Egg to make room in the nest
5. Boggy the polar bear isn’t the best father…he leaves his children alone at Christmas time to go sledding and is generally negligent. His wife hits the children with her purse (they were being pretty terrible lol, but still worth mentioning).

If you lose in the maze segment of gobi's valley a ceiling of spikes descends and kills you
This isn't a nuts and bolts video but what happens with Clanker in that game is at least worth a mention
Considering the shaman theme, Mumbo Tokens may actually be inspired by shrunken heads, but obviously it was too dark to do that outright
Cheato getting his pages torn out can't have been pleasant
Who the hell left Gobi chained to a boulder??? How long was he trapped there in the sun with no food?
Snorkel being a mammal who needs to breathe air so is slowly running out of oxygen until he's freed
Grunty uses Dingpot as a toilet
The whole thing with the talking tree in gobi's valley. It's literally in an oasis surrounded by water but, because he is anthropomorphic and rooted in place he has to drink the water with his mouth, but he cannot move
It says.....I think in the game manual? That Mumbo is the one who taught Gruntilda magic. She then backstabbed him and permanently cursed his face, that's why he wears a mask and maybe also has weird gross skin.
When Jingaling is a zombie, his pink pet, Toots, is reduced to a pile of ash with googly eyes
Mrs. Boggy beating her child
If you try to "hatch" Tiptup's egg with a grenade he exclaims you'll blow his kid into smithereens
Lord Woo being stuck his whole life in the locker with no way out
Several NPCs will tell Mumbo that they won't talk to "your kind"

Dang, I never would've guessed just how much darker Banjo-Tooie was compared to Banjo-Kazooie. I just remembered seeing Banjo-Kazooie and getting freaked out by Clanker when I was younger. Never beat it 😅
I was pretty freaked out by Clanker too! Particularly his insides...I didn't beat either game as a kid but I do remember getting to at least Mad Monster Mansion in the original back then. Tooie, I don't think I made much progress at all when it first came out but I appreciated that opening (even if it did scare me a bit haha)
Dude I knew instantly as a kid that Tooie was darker. The Minjos in particular were really creepy to me.

Goggles: “How are the Amaze-O-Gaze Glasses working out? I’m sure my daddy will be able to fix them if they’re broken.”

They really were going all out with the "Bottles is having a literal out of body experience" jokes with that one part of the game.

Yeah. I remember HATING Spiral Mountain in Tooie because it made me so sad. I can deal with it now, but damn, Kirkhope can really convey feeling.

It's key is simply changed to minor in Tooie. But yeah, Kirkhope is the best

Yikes, I can't believe I missed all these when I a kid but, I was so busy hunting for magguffins I didn't even notice the darker stuff. Too be fair, the British stuff would be harder for a US kid to catch.
I remember playing Tooie as a kid. Shit was scary. Especially the Mumbo Jumbo fight and the carnival. And no I haven't seen that part of the video yet, I'm just speaking on my trauma lol
Ganondorf was probably censored because a human being coughing up blood is more disturbing than a giant anglerfish bleeding a bit when its sores are popped
And since he's green, that green stuff is probably his blood anyway!

Ah Banjo, a certified hood classic. Not only is it extremely hilarious but also pretty depressing at times.
Jeez, maybe Sakurai wasn’t kidding when he referred to all the Banjo Kazooie characters as “poor souls”.
I remember watching that segment of the presentation and thinking "this would have been perfect for Dark Aspects". I'm glad I got to remake my old Banjo-Kazooie episodes here, it gave me the opportunity to reference it!

Oh yeah, that little blip of backstory about Mumbo Jumbo in the instruction manual. I always found it kind of weird that he never turned back to normal after the conditions for him doing so were met. I think that was the start of me not always taking what the manual said with regards to narrative parts as complete gospel to the game’s actual story. There are other examples of that with other games, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head. Could make for an interesting video topic actually…

I'd like to think so too, but he does unfortunately feel pain as one of the Jiggies involves easing his toothache!
I only just completed Banjo-Kazooie on the switch last night and the notes not saving was the most frustrating part of the game but it was a great play. Eagerly awaiting the 2nd game now.

The gray Jinjos only appeared in Banjo Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge for the GBA in 2003.
I never played Grunty's Revenge, but I want to! That's even sadder then, as we get to actually see them live and well before the events of Tooie...

Once you realize what Grunty did to Mumbo in the past, his simping for her in the Game Over screen feels more like recognizing that Grunty has won and acting out of self-preservation...
A cut level from Banjo Kazooie called Fungus Forest showed that Clanker WAS once supposed to be a live fish.
I heard that was the case, but I'm only just now seeing what he was supposed to look like. Very cool! I'm glad they went this route for the final version
Nah, the footage you're referring to is just an early, unfinished Clanker's cavern filled with placeholder textures, hence why Clanker moreso resembles a living fish. There's been more footage shown off of the area showing how unfinished it was, along with some footage of Bubblegloop Swamp in a similar state.

That's exactly what makes these games so special! The atmosphere in many of Rare's games are unmatched...I love the dynamic soundtrack in this game, especially the lair theme constantly changing to match the level you're closest to

Banjo-Kazooie as a whole is very dear to me - I remember Tooie traumatizing me when I first played it. Like, it just became that much darker, doing away with much of the whimsy fairy tale-like vibe of the first one. Love that about it, though. Nice to see people talk about its darker sides.
Think what scared me most as a kid was King Sandybutt's tomb after seeing what happens when you run out of time and Bottles just straight-up dying in Tooie. At least his spirit gets to be snarky about ants eating his corpse...
The soundtrack helps so much. Grant did an impeccable job on both games.

I believe that's just a general rating for all Nintendo Switch Online games, E-T. I wouldn't be surprised though, EarthBound was bumped up to T when it launched on Wii U Virtual Console
As was my favorite Kirby game, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. That was originally an E10+, now its a T.
Tooie scared me so much as a kid! Especially the Carnival section!

You know, I didn’t even notice half of these, but watching the video and looking back, man, it was a dark game at times!
This is a great video and a nice breakdown of the Banjo Kazooie/Tootie dark moments. You clearly put a lot of work into it! The only suggestion I'd make is to speak up a bit during the narration. You sound kinda reserved and held back. Try to be a bit less 'hushed' in the next video. Again, great editing and overall good video!

Its always radical to find an amazing channel when they're still smaller, especially when you know it's gonna blow up like this one. Binging your whole dark matters series.
In the GBA game, Banjo Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, Klungo makes a robotic body for Gruntilda and she casts a spell to put her soul into it. It's likely this game takes place between the first and second games.
This was one of the first open world games I've ever played, for N64. I remember going to that one place, and having to 'stomp' on tiles to spell the cheat codes lol I forgot a lot about the game... But I remember not making it passed a certain stage. So, technically could replay again for the value of the game as I haven't finished it yet. I remember it being a super long game too, or at least having soo much levels to beat and stuff to explore ♥️

Dang, so many dark aspects and Witchy World didn’t show up besides a scene Boggies wife public child abuse on her son. The fact you have to abuse the child to get him to go. I’m surprised Grunty Industries wasn’t brought up more,

Awesome video!! Learned a lot of stuff i didn’t know…. So another disturbing thing… apparently the music theme played in gruntilda’s lair is based off an old song called The Teddy Bears Picnic that is played at bohemian grove while members hunt children.
Woah! I'll have to look into this, I heard that her theme was based on Teddy Bears Picnic but I don't think I've ever heard about Bohemian Grove...

Just pointing out that all the "minge" stuff is actually a play on "minging" (with a hard g). It's typically British slang for someone that is perceived as gross.
To this day I’m convinced that after the extreme terror I got from seeing Clanker for the first time and the relative safety of his insides have strongly influenced my more… unfortunate interests.

I always thought the red bits on the side of clanker were rust? Not scars or whatever. 🤔
How I see it is that there is lots of rust all over him (the brownish coloration on his grey body, which is especially prominent at the metal seams), while the red is supposed to be chipped off metal exposing his organic body. It's hard to tell with the original resolution of the textures, but it is the same color as the inside of him. I could be wrong though! Perhaps it is just extreme rust in those spots. I hope so, since he'd be prone to a nasty infection in that water lol
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but those are open wounds. Rust is more the color of old, dried blood. It's got a visible brown hue to it.

15:25 You can see Roysten inside his bowl in Banjo's house as usual in the opening cutscene, so his story about being "knocked off the barbeque" doesn't make sense.
I highly doubt the Captain Pugwash characters' names being mistaken for innuendo would be mere misunderstanding. Mates I would be able to understand being simply a mishearing, but how did they get "Roger" from "Tom?" The only thing that could have been to still make it somewhat understandable would be misremembering, but I'm sure they would have had to watch the series again in order to make sure they're actually hearing what they think they're hearing.
I actually as a kid remembered the first game as being darker than the second, though I think it was just because of my age - I matured a bit and was better able to handle dark imagery (relatively speaking) by the time the sequel came out.
Also, the sequel felt a bit easier, due I suppose to that whole thing where all the music notes you collected in a level in the first game would reset upon death or game over (I forget which one), making death that much more stressful)
Also, the fact that just quitting out of BK1 to the title screen triggered the game over screen for some reason. That just wasn’t nice.

I should've used footage of that instead of the piano ghost hand! Oh well 😅do you think Dingpot's name comes from Dingy + Pot? That does make sense, I honestly didn't think about that. I always just assumed it was pronounced Ding because he makes a lot of noise (and it can be a double entendre, to match Gruntilda's last name Winkybunion). You're probably right though!

I've said it before on one of the old videos and I'll say it again : None of the innuendos are clever, if anything they're brazen and mostly just fly over some people's heads because they're not 30 year old British men in the year 2000.

Why is this video so quiet?
I'm honestly not entirely sure. I am getting a more professional XLR mic soon, my USB one broke (I had to use an old backup for this). I played around with the settings quite a bit & researched how to get better sound (which I think was a success, but you're right--the end result is quieter than most videos on UA-cam). You can normalize the track in post but there's only so much that can do

While I'm interested in the subject matter, Tooie's Native Canadian woman. Banjos world has elements of Twycross Britain. Gruntilda as Poshspice. I just hate your use of stock photos with uncredited people in them.
You're right, sorry about that! I went ahead and credited the images in the description. As far as Tooie's native woman, are you talking about Humba and the stereotyped design? I didn't talk about it in the video, but I could have. Gruntilda's transformed form does look a bit like Posh Spice 😅 I know that Rare is based in Twycross, and "Twycross England" on the back of the ship in Rusty Bucket Bay, which is pretty cool. Is that what you meant?

Playing on switch now and solely using the emulator save/load options because the trauma of watching Tooty turn into a monster every time my mom made me turn off my game as a young kid still has lasting effects on me to this day 😌
