- Sam from Rhystic Studies brings his Dandân deck so that he can show us Forgetful Fish! Described as a blue mage's dream, Dandân is one of the most complex Magic: The Gathering formats, but best of all? It costs very little to build! See it played with Georg here!

I am again honored to be mentioned by some of my favorite Magic UA-camrs. Thanks for showing off Forgetful Fish.
It's a great way to play!!
Thank you for bringing it into the world
Thank you for bringing this amazing format into the world.
Thank you for this bringing us this fantastic way to play!
Thank you for your creative thinking! I love forgetful fish!
I feel like the non-commander SUP episodes are less popular, but I'm here to say how grateful I am for them! Commander is fun but we need to change it up a little bit sometimes!
This exactly! I love commander but playing other formats is really fun too
Totally agree. In fact the non commander episodes sparked a need for playing non casual magic in me. Keep up the good work prof
I agree! The occasional change up is nice, a pauper episode on here got me into pauper and I play it almost as much as commander
I never got the appeal of commander but with time I grew to absolutely despise it.
The ubiquity of commander content online and cards in every set actually got me to stop playing Magic and I only watch channels that actually talk about other aspects of the game as well (hence why I'm here).
I love the non-commander episodes of SU&P and I think that in contrast to the samey commander episodes they actually feature some very welcome diversity and honestly great content.
I know they don't bring the views commander content does but I really hope people finally get tired of commander within the next couple of years so that the game can actually return to being open, diverse, experimental, ACTUALLY casual (I don't see how a format with such strict deck building rules and a ban list is casual) and fun...
I love these episodes the most.
I've clearly watched the hidden commander episode too many times because hearing Sam say the words "basic island" without him immediately following it up with "by Raoul Vitale" just feels wrong
That episode is like a comfort for me, when I can't decide what to put on, it's a good chance it's that. It's trouser time.
Same, I rewatch that episode like once a month at least. My favorite SUP episode by far
That episode is pure entertainment gold. My favorite so far no doubt.
Egg!
it's like the 1994 commander episode from cardmarket, where andrea keeps "playing a beta plains". can't unhear that
for anyone wondering the princess bride sicilian, and to boost interaction, his name is Vizzini
Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!
I would like to say, and to boost interaction, that is very interesting!
Inconceivable
@nedcurfman3486 I do not think this word means, what you think it means...
Man I totally forgot that I played this game!
Honestly there is not a better plan than Sam that I couldve filmed this with and I am SO happy that we showed the beauty of this format. Glad I got to wear my lederhosen too
Super spannend! War eine Freude, deinen Überlebenskampf zu verfolgen :D
Amazing game!
During the outro I was like: "Wait, are those Lederhosen?" Such a shame they werent visible during the game 😂
Love the game and the prof is wrong, kpop is content
I love how this little game design idea by Nick Floyd from some old forum has now spread through the internet many years after its creation and has also sparked a few other variants.
Sam and Georg are easily two of my favorite guests on this series. They're both insanely delightful.
EDIT: incredible game. never heard of this format before but it was really cool to see
Truly appreciate it :)
They honestly are my two favs. Close is the game grump and brian + olivia as the other three in my top 5
@@huron994 i can't remember if this was on SUP but brian and olivia are a riot and so is Kyle Hill. i think him and kibler were both on one.
@BraxtonMeyer they've been on, and arin has been on CaH too. They're all buds. Kyle hill is also right up there with the other 5
@@BraxtonMeyer there was one episode where brian had kyle sleeves and vise versa. It was great
Anytime I see Rhystic I immediately click because I know it will be something wacky and fun. But... Everytime he said "Basic Island" my brain immediately filled in "by Raoul Vitale" lol
This episode is stellar. They're clearly competing to win but there's no anger or bad feels, just vibing with the game. Great guests! Looking fresh with the haircuts haha
One of the benefits of a shared deck format is that there's no added strife from bad matchups, strong feelings toward certain decks, etc.
That visualization of the stack is one of the best I've ever seen on any MtG content, HUGE props to the editing team for that one.
Play to Win have the Stack visualized better, much more cleanly.
Holy crap, this was BRILLIANT to watch. Two players, highly skilled, playing an extremely thinky game, narrating their turns and explaining their lines, just perfect MtG content. Great stuff as always, Prof!
AN HOUR OF DANDÂN !?
Yeah, sadly it’s a bit short.
Very excited for this episode. Dandan is the best format to tell if my ADHD meds have worn off.
☠️
I'm curious by what you mean, do the meds help you keep up with this type of slower play? I don't know how it works
As someone who is also on adhd meds I fully know what you mean
@@pinkstarburst99 adhd meds help people with adhd focus and remember short term things better.
@@pinkstarburst99They’d help with focusing on what’s going on in the game and what’s going to happen when spells start resolving. In a game with basically no board, it takes a lot more mental discipline to keep track of which cards are where, what’s happening, and what may happen next.
Sicilian guy in Princess Bride is called Vizzini.
Vizzini! He was even made into a card as an alt of Baral , Chief of Compliance
Super happy that this is one of the few magic channels that provides players with not only several formats within magic (as opposed to just Commander,) but other card games as well.
Huge thanks to you, Prof for continuing to give a shout to so many great ways to play the game, and thanks to Sam for his wonderful vid on the start of the concept! Oh, and thanks to Georg for continuing to be a super cool dude, and funny as hell!😂
Love you guys, gotta go and pick up the few cards I need to form a Dandan deck before prices go up... The best thing about a format like Dandan, is that the decklists are known, but that also means that you can grab the cards, sleeve them up, and have a dedicated deck box or section in your oversized deck box for this deck and not worry about improving the deck or swapping out any cards per new set release. All it takes is the one deck, a friend, and somewhere to play it!
Cheers! Obligatory: Like it when we don't do Commander? Share with friends, post to socials, all that jazz. Be an advocate of the content you love and want to see more of!
This is like a format to train blue mages,we need one format like this for every color...i would love to see it so much! This is so special,i love it
Add in Judge Tower to train judges.
“Summon one DanDan, you have none left 🎼”
18:29 my suggested workaround to the search problem- cascade into an Island. Both parties get some, but not perfect, info on the game state
That actually plays into the flavor. Dandan coming up to the surface, causing a ripple effect.
The Dandan list I play with has Mystic Sanctuaries, which are fetchable. Would be sad to miss out on that, I prefer to just agree to not card-count the library. Alternatively, idk, exile five cards face down at random before the game, that should make it hard enough that no one's going to bother anymore
@@saschabaer3327because decklist is known, it could be "cascade into specified valid target". I know some lists are running the new izzet surveil land too, so just specify target before resolving.
@@saschabaer3327maybe have a sideboard of lands and just blind shuffle the library?
i also agree this is probably the most fair workaround for the search problem.
the more I was watching, the more invest I was at learning more about the format. Very cool !!
It's an amazing format.
@@TolarianCommunityCollege It is! Now I want to see decks in other colours
I learned what DanDan is through the teasers at the end of the previous videos and I'm very excited for this episode!
I like the out of left field formats like this. It shows how versatile magic is as a game and the ideas people can come up with.
This was really cool to watch. The swing from Rhystic Studies looking to have an easy win to Georg having big card advatage and then Diminishing Returns just resetting the whole thing was a trip.
Ever since I watched Sam's video on Forgetful Fish, I've wanted to watch him play it. It hasn't disappointed.
Every time I see DanDan, I desperately want to play it. What a wonderfully simple yet deep format.
Dandan has really reignited my passion for the game last year. Collecting the cards and playing with the assembled deck is a ton of fun. I have yet to meet a person who wasn’t sold on it after playing a game or two. It is easily the crown jewel of my collection. Thanks Sam for making a video on it. Happy to see it get more coverage.
I'm so glad I got to see this format in action. Loved Rhystic's video on the format, and as an aspiring game designer and blue mage seeing the plays and hidden depth of the card choices is like a dream.
Oh my god that was insanely awesome! Felt like a real wizard battle
I've played mtg for about 30 years now and Dandan was the art that sparked my imagination. I got my forgetful fish deck as soon as I heard about it and it's been a blast to play. Thanks for showing this!
AMAZING match! Loved how Sam and Georg explain their thought process
I’m extremely excited for the next episode! I love Team APS and I’m so glad they finally played some Commander ❤
People have asked for a SHuffle Up & Play where we use our "Build-Your-Own Commander Precon" decks and so...we DID! Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/gXSd96hFd_A/v-deo.html
Fantastisch
Can we get the deck list please and thank you.
Do you have deck lists for the other non-blue color versions?
I love this format, it is great to play in-between games.
There is a sweet printable 3D deck holder that features the two boats beginning to capsize as the fish surfaces on CuIts3D, definitely worth checking out.
Longest game we've played has been about 30 minutes, this was an EPIC DanDan match.
DanDan - White which is Lost Leonin is an amazing variant, you can actually toss all the Phyrexian mana cards in there and its a race to give a player 10 poison counters so it is still 5 attacks worth BUT you get to use life as a resource for all 5 colors of the Phyrexian mana which is extremely fun.
This specific decklist is posted, but I'd be really interested to see how it's updated over time but I haven't been able to find an archidect/moxfield/etc for rhystic. I have mystic tutor in mine and am removing it because it doesn't feel fun on either side of the interaction. If it were a sorcery then it'd be different I think.
Great game though! Was entertaining the whole time and everything I love about blue.
yes dandân!!! i've never played but it's so fascinating to watch... found out about it first through the excellent rhystic studies video, so feels appropriate to seem him play it here!
Saw the Card Market videos on Dandan so was VERY excited to see the preview from the last Shuffle Up And Play.
Dandan with Rhystic study isn't a dream, its very real and a treat.
every single play they make feels lile the biggest outplay ever, which i guess that's what dandan does. Loving it ❤
That Rhystic Studies video made me fall in love with this format and build my own Dandan deck. I now have designs to build a white one...revolving around Barren Glory.
I’ve always loved the idea of a shared library. When I was first learning to play me and my friends didn’t have much so we would shuffle up a deck and both play from it. Dandan brings me back to those days in high school.
I’m really interested in a red variant of Dandan. I envision it to be faster and possibly not even creature based. Almost like Buckshot roulette. I can also see it as a manic frenzy of random discards and land control. There’s just so many ways to build with the foundations of Magic. I live this game.
The way they talked through it tempts me to make a proxy DanDan deck 😁
This was peak Blue Mage Magic. Congrats to Sam for winning and congrats to Georg for his resilience and slipperiness.
2 of the best guests of the show! And what a fun format to see showcased! Thanks Prof and TCC!
This episode was insane! The mind games and stack wars were very entertaining to witness.
George going down to one life halfway through the video ajd Sam desperately trying to get a threat to stick for the rest of the game is wonderful
Dan-Dan is one of my new favorite ways to play magic and sams video from last year got me into it! Love seeing you highlight different formats shuffle up and play prof, and I get excited to try them all too.
As a German viewer, it's always a little highlight for me when Georg says something in German, because you don't expect to hear an accent-free, perfectly pronounced German word in between all the English
This is awesome! I'd also LOVE to see you guys play Judge's Tower!
What an insane game. I loved this. Nail biting and some cool plays.
Hey it's the dude that has that hot take that every mechanic is just kicker, and horseman-ship
It is not a hot take, it is the TRUTH!
@@GermanGaryOak I mean I can't think of any other mechanic so your right.
More of non-commander formats! Loved the cube episodes, for example! I'm advocating for what I love, leaving a comment for the algorithm ;)
What an incredible episode. Never seen dandan before, and now i love the whole concept. Thank you to The Professor, and the players!
Love these non-commander eps of the show 😊
I dont get many chances to play other formats in person so love seeing interesting stuff here!! 💜
This back and forth is legendary.
A fantastic episode, showcasing a fantastic format! Quite an excellent practice/training format, teaching the importance of timing, order and the function of the stack.
Dandân gameplay let’s go!!! Working on building it before another EDH deck!
Absolutely love these episodes, getting to see other formats are so fun. Can't wait to see more!
I've been waiting exactly one year for this. Amazing
The people demand more Georg and Sam!
This episode was missing one thing: a counter in the corner tracking the number of times Dandan was said
Also a counter counter. To count how many times a spell was "countered"
Quite possibly my favorite SUAP yet, looove both guests!
This was so funny and entertaining, but also so informative for mastering the stack. Love seeing Sam and Georg on the channel. Great episode.
And we get Team APS next episode?! SO PUMPED!
Watching the end credits wearing the same socks as Prof is funny experience
This is my favourite episode of all time, I've watched it 4 times now and just made my own Dandan deck, I've never been so excited to play magic and I've been a dedicated magic player for over a decade
Always a delight to see Shuffle Up and Play. Thanks Prof and friends!!!
Never played dandan but always have wanted to. Loved this! And I love everything to do with Sam and Rhystic Studies. Truly showing the love of what Magic has to offer
What a great format, and the next Shuffle Up & Play is going to be a treat, i was waiting for this one a long time lets GOOOOOOOOO
This is my favorite episode yet. Like wow, this was such a cool format to see. The thinking alone is so entertaining.
What an absolute blast of a game, great people involved and also... holy cow Prof, episode 50 of SUP? It feels like it just started yesterday! Congrats on the big 50th episode, looking forward to many more to come!
This was the coolest episode I've seen yet! I was smiling the entire episode as they went back and forth! Good win and good game.
Such a simple idea with such an incredible execution, this format is truly something else
Really great to to have the prof there to ask questions and act as the audience who don’t know exactly why they play when they Do! Super fun episode!
Really great episode and tension just kept mounting as the game progressed. Love seeing these more niche sides of magic!
thank you for showing this off! showing off new formats and the love for the community is always appreciated!
This is rad!
I love seeing niche formats go so hard!
As a newer player, Dan Dan games are a really fun way to see the more intricacies of Magic and interactions.
Awesome video.
Best game ever played, fun and also useful to learn a lot on how the stack works. Loved it!
This was a lot more fun to watch than I thought it would be, smart pilots and entertaining talents!
Very interesting episode showcasing other ways Magic can be played. Also I like how guys are explaining ideas behind certain plays and strategies. Thumbs up! ❤
This was incredible, I really enjoyed the back and forth in this episode. George just kept in the game until the very end. Rhystic is a joy of a content creator and I would love to see more "fan created" formats even if they aren't the most popular videos to make.
Oh my God. This looks like so much fun. I knew nothing about this format and now I want my own deck
I've always been so interested in Dandan. Thanks for a great demo of the format!
That is SUCH a cool format and a new favorite episode for sure!
That was beautiful. Love this Episode so much.
Excellent episode, thank you!
I really appreciate both players explaining their plays. For us dullards.
A remarkable demonstration of skill by the players. Great job!
Unironically want to build this deck now. Crazy mental puzzles to play around, and it tickles the part of my brain I get excited to use. 😊
Such a cool format, would love to see more of it!
This format rules! I have to build this at some point oh my gosh this looks so fun. Great guests to have on for this too. Learned a lot and had a lot of fun.
Absolutely fantastic!!!
I loved this episode so much. A buddy in my playgroup just put together a dandan deck!
I'm so excited to finally see this being played. Loved it!
You know, I really love the subtle information reveal from alternate arts and library searches. I think it adds to the fun!
This was such a well done episode, Prof. Might be one of the most interesting episodes of any MTG I have seen. Also, give props to the production team. The sing shots were looking crisp with the blurred background.
It is really cool to see how many different ways there are to take the basic gameplay of magic and use it to create all these unique formats like Dandan or Judge's tower
I loved Sam's video, but haven't seen it played. This was fascinating, exactly the kind of magic I love.
Georg’s jacket is ICONIC.
I love watching these offshoot format videos! Gives me an opportunity to look around the set and to see what you might've changed. Hopefully you'll explain some of them in your Behind the Campus video!
Kyle Hill once made a video on how MtG is Turing complete. I like to imagine Dandan as an old, classic game designed to run on an MtG engine.
Love these non-commander episodes! It's refreshing to see good non-commander content. I like commander, but it's a media desert for most other formats and modes of play.
This has made me want to make a Dandan deck! It looks like a real breath of fresh air and something that can just live in my bag with all my magic stuff; cracking out whenever the mood takes me!
This was such a fun game!! I love how much Sam loves Dandân.
Also, it looks like the neck of his t-shirt was mended by hand and I think that's cool :)
