Renaultsport Clio V6 255 Phase 2 drive review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- Renaultsport Clio V6 255 was the second generation Clio V6 and was much improved on the Phase 1 version. With 255bhp from its mid-mounted 3.0litre V6, it proved a riot to drive, as you'll see in this video. Huge thanks to The Hairpin Company for the loan of this fabulous 4760mile example, which is now for sale. www.thehairpin...

Why don't manufacturers make these types of cars anymore? They're just so cool. More excited to see this than your run of the mill ferrari, lambo, aston, mclaren etc
The fact that Ferrari and Lambo are considered run of the mill is sad.
Because money.
The Alpine A110 really is an awesome car, shame it isn't sold in Germany (and shame I am a poor student lol)

Now here’s a French car I really do appreciate... beautiful in blue
It was designed in the UK by TWR in Witney
@@attonicuc44 in fact, not designed by TWR but with TWR
There are some good french cars like the Renault 5 turbo, 205 gti, Alpine A110, Bugatti...

It was engineered by and not with TWR. It was engineered at Broadstone Barns near Chipping Norton, not at Leafield.
Love the mad French. They do some wonderfully daft stuff.
This was all from Japan. Nissan wanted to put their joint engine inside something that would make noise. The car is basically a 350z
@@dann756 The ESpace F1 uses the barking mad RS5 V10 rated at 800hp - the standard ESpace can be had with the Nissan VQ 3.5, but it doesn't make much noise, it's just a big, boring heavy MPV which is a bit faster & smoother than the lower end models.

Very nice video great to see this little monster again. Thank you Harry and Hairpin company. By the way nice T-Shirt Harry, great to see Turkish flag as a Turkish follower.
I remember seeing a line of these at a Renault dealership back in the day, with a lightly used nearly new one for £13995. Hindsight is a wonderful thing 😫😂

Back when manufacturers actually cared about making something special for regular people. Now they don't bother if it doesn't have a good profit margin, and thus no cars are memorable. They're all throw-aways. Look at the BMW M range these days.... does anyone really care about them like they did an e30/e36/e46/e92? No. Those were special, the new ones are just there to meet quotas.
The enviromentalist cult has ruined cars, emissions regulations and restrictions pretty much prohibit manufacturers to make anything other than an overboosted to death 4-pot without absurd tax punishments. Cars like this are a rarer sight than ever and will be gone very soon :(
Personally, I really liked the M140i (old one of course, not the shitty new one), because it had a 6-cylinder unlike every other hatchback on the market.
Probably in a future they’ll be special
What amazing timing... I've literally spent the last few days looking at classified ads for these! What a cool, quirky, punchy little car.
Great review again. By far the best UA-camr when it comes to describing cars . If only he would do a alfa gtv 916 V6 review.
Yeah you're right - "the best UA-camr when it comes to describing cars" - that's because he knows. Unlike most UA-camrs, Harry is one of the few actual car experts, or professional car experts on UA-cam. The rest are amateurs, or give you false news. You don't get car designers, engineers, or manufacturers, or proper experienced time-served journalists as UA-camrs - Gavin Green, Steve Cropley, or professional experts who have driven cars like Jackie Stewart etc. We are so lucky here - we get Harry - a proper expert. And a proper car-nut. Many thanks Harry.
One of the best youtubers.
"One of the best youtubers"... He's a top journalist, a collector and he's been a pro for decades. UA-camrs...
I would respectfuly add David Cirone (Driving Experience) to the list....some priceless interviews and automotive tales straight from Italy’s finest, some of the greatest automotive stories would not have survived if not for him. He could be Harry’s grandson, but just watch the man handle a renault 5 gt turbo or a fiat uno turbo lol

God these are jaw-droppingly gorgeous.
One of the coolest cars you've done a video on Harry - thanks! I've recently driven a Renault 5 Turbo 2 (and done a video on it) and I totally get the magic of these cars now. Honestly, the 5 Turbo 2 is the most fun car I've ever driven out of everything I've driven. I can only imagine what the same concept in a more modern variant is like.
Being from the States, I was never aware of this car. But I can see my old R5 (Le Car) in that design.
That license plate is just begging the Clio's will: "Take on me".
Always loved this car, especially in this color. Thanks for this review, Harry!
Your Thumbs Up 👍 to Thumbs Down 👎 ratio is outstanding, a clear indication of how much we all enjoy your vids👍
The idea of mid-engined V6 Clio is just so lovely. I wouldn't even care if it wasn't much of a car to drive, but apparently it is!
"...the world has got much more sensible since this was created..." Are you sure about that Harry? Thanks for this wonderful video about one of my bucket list cars.
A Friday and a new Harry's Garage. The stars have aligned!
15k GBP appreciation, that is awesome for a Renault.
Yea usually anything French depreciates like a turd (normally for a reason). The high end Renaults seems to hold their value well though. They are a different breed than the run of the mill crap.
Superb review like always. One of my favourite cars of all time. Absolutely stunning to look at especially in this blue or liquid yellow! Supercar presence and what an amazing V6 engine note, sounds incredible! Good work Harry :)
Such a pretty car. I've loved the look of that car since the moment I first saw one. Thanks for reminding us what a great car that is.
Great vid Harry. I am an 80's hot hatch child. So can completely relate to this. I had a phase 2 R5 GT turbo way back when. The v6 clio has always mystified me. Was lovely to see a detailed honest review of a great phase 2 example. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I've owned my identical Illiad phase 2 Vee since new in 2005, and could never imagine not owing it! Every time I drive it, even popping to the shops, is an event and I've never got bored of it! Absolutely delighted to see that Harry agrees and loves it too, since I can think of nobody else on UA-cam whose opinion I respect more!
That V6 voice is simply wicked. It's so easy to enjoy driving with this kind of hot hatch. Easy to get around all kind of nice, twisty country roads. It's a whole different kind of enjoyment compared to Supercars.
Mid Engine car for the masses! Looks more exotic today and deserves it's classic status. Great video Harry!
Love these, sounds glorious with that V6 too.
Doesn’t matter what car Harry talks about, I always want one by the end of the video
I wish these hyperhatches were available in North America... love the crazy looks and would love taking that to the track... nice review, thank you!
Americans cannot seem to control a Mustang when leaving a car meet.
And you want them to try driving a mid-engine hatch? Ha!
Hopefully a manufacturer out there will see this and be inspired to make something completely nuts simply because driving is fun!! Great video Harry.
Another great video from Harry! This man always delivers! Greetings from Switzerland.
Greetings from the UK, my friend!
Finally been waiting for a review of this car forever its so iconic! doug dumero was in uk was begging him to find one and review it!
I remember this Clio v6 from NFS most wanted, such a lovely little car
Modern successor to the R5 Turbo 2. Everything about it is special and deserves a proper built engine to get the engine to match the extreme looks of the Clio V6. To justify the larger V6 it needs to really put out a glorious heart and soul intake growl and exhaust note to the package. Love the looks and the exclusivity. One of the best looking hot hatches ever made IMO. Looks like a genuine Rallye monster.
One of the great cars of the last twenty years. Still amazes me Renault signed this off. Can’t ever imagine a mainstream manufacturer doing something so crazy again these days!
I wouldn't be so sure. The Ford Focus RS was pretty insane too, and today we have the likes of the Honda Civic Type R, Audi RS3 or the Megane RS, they are all faster and wilder than this Clio V6 (which is a lovely car of course).
@@jacobzimmermann59 they are all much bigger cars though
Love that little smile Harry gives when he puts his foot down..
really like the genuine love for cars that Harry has. For someone who has driven any sort of supercar to be so interested in any kind of sport car, no matter if it's a small clio or an old one, it's just amazing. You can see he is really curious about the car and just want to drive it. He even owns the old clio whom he passed to his kid just because it is a nice car to drive. A lot of people just forget about fun to drive cars of not so prestigious brands as soon as they have the disposable income to buy into more expensive sport car. Cheers to all those who have Harry's attitude! I love all the sport car that are fun to drive too, no matter what is the brand and I could buy any brand as long as I like the car and the way it drives. All Harry s video are very informative and straight to the point!
My dream car. Renault has not made anything this gorgeous for production, there is nothing like it.It boasts loads of presence.
Thank you, Harry, entertaining as ever! 👍

Yeah definitely enjoyed this one, small car, big engine, big grin and you definitely had a big smile on your face! Didn't know anything these models really, but super impressed with how it drives, looks, put together. Great video 😊
One of my favourite memories is sitting out/on thee passenger window with my dad driving trough the tunnel at Monaco as the support race circa 2001-3, what a sound that thing made!

Harry's smile says it all. Fun and games with lower power. What's not to like?!!
Brilliant Harry. Thoroughly enjoyed the nostalgia behind this model. Had one before I moved upto Alfa's.
Now that’s a real hot hatch, screw the A45!
Yeah, love it too. But to be honest, I drove the A45 for a year, it drives circles around the Clio lol. Prefer the Clio tho...
Eni well no surprise to anybody when the A45 has about ~180 more horsepower than the clio, but probably the most important thing is that the Clio just has that character that the A45 lacks
I use to work for Renault and working on the engine was a pain as the roof is so low at the back, another down side is the lack of steering lock due to the big wheels. However there absolutely awesome cars a friend of mine use to daily a ph1 and got 30mpg out of it, they look amazing and are completely different drive compared to a 182.
One of my neighbours has a Ph2 the same as that, same colour too. Reg No. "V6 OWOW". Love the Renault L7X engine. Also in Laguna V6's, and Peugeot coupe's of the era.

What a special car. Always loved how it looks. But sadly never driven one. Thanks Harry for the video!
Great to see one of these again. One of my memories of this car was when Jenson Button used to drive for Benetton/Renault and drove one of these at Goodwood Festival of Speed in the early 2000s and was doing burn outs / donuts in it and the marshals / staff reprimanded him for his behaviour. How times have changed, now they actively encourage tyre shredding hooligan antics at that event :)

Harry, I can't believe there isn't a video with an Alfa Romeo Busso V6 engine in it!
Superb Harry, it was great to see the 2 cars side by side for comparison.
And yet again you hit the nail on the head, enough power and drama for today’s roads.
This car totally reminds me of the ShoGun cars that were made in the 90's, utilizing the Yamaha V6 engine of the Ford Taurus SHO, and placed in the rear of a Ford Festiva hatchback. I'd be willing to bet that the designers of this Clio may have been inspired by that and came up with this beauty 10 years later.
Personally I'd take the Trophy every time.
@R A Why does having a personal preference make somebody an idiot? The beauty of car culture is we all like different things. People like you are cancer to the car community.
+R A - Chill man - insults not needed when discussing cars! We all like different cars - we know you had a 1st gen. Others like other cars. I had a Honda 50 and liked it, bruh. I like a Clio. Harry has a Clio. No cancer man, no cancer, relax. Luckily we all like different cars! Cheers
@R A You presume to know a lot about me. Perhaps you could tell me where in the car trade you work so we could have a mature chat about it? I'd imagine presented with the prospect of a real world encounter you wont be so insulting. There is a community, a thriving one, at track days, on enthusiast forums, it's just that rude people like yourself are seldom invited to frequent them. Perhaps if you weren't so insulting from the off you'd be involved in some of the wonderful communities that exist around car culture, instead of sweatily typing spite from behind the safety of anonymity. Pathetic really.
@@indahouse2323 Couldn't agree more. By cancerous I mean that insults and childish comments like his erode the community from within and destroy it, because reasonable people stop bothering to contribute or partake.

One of my favorite cars from Gran Turismo 3
Thanks Harry. One of my favourite cars.
This car has a proper noise. I never understood why people say V6's don't sound good. The V6 in this, the J series Honda engines, and Alfa's Busso V6's are some of the best sounding engines iv'e ever heard. There are no straight 6's that even come close.
Yes the J series and Busso are the cream of the crop!
Well the Honda CBX1000 is the best sounding I6 in my opinion- yeah its a motorcycle engine but still- F1 sound for days
The L7X is a bit clinical. But if you fit a large 3" induction pipe and a really big open air air-filter, then the noise is almost enough to awaken the dead. Its awesome !. Did it to mine, and the induction was louder than the exhaust lol
You haven't heard the RB26 then. ITB's on a twin turbo l6👌🏼 especially with a quality sport exhaust it just talks to you when driving normally and absolutely scream when close to the 8k rpm limiter. 😍
I was surprised how good this clio sounds. I like it too👌🏼
@@gtrulez If were going for best sounding 6cyl in the world. Then its the Alpine A110-50 Which uses a highly tuned version of the Nissan GTR engine. Loud isnt even close !.
The best looking hot hatch ever made. In my opinion.
I didn’t, until recently, realise the significance of the like button.I will go back through your catalogue, and click every one 😀
I had a quick go in one of these years ago while I had a Clio Williams, and was surprised by the driving experience. As you say, the V6 felt quite muscular and long legged, sonorous and relaxed to drive. It wasn't a frenetic drive, it was almost more of a GT experience than a hot hatch experience. The engine felt quite relaxed and unstressed, it was really nice to drive and had the character of a larger car - although I don't think it would see which way a Clio Williams went on a difficult road. It's a lovely, lovely thing though - and that styling is amazing.
I’ve wanted a phase 2 V6 since about 2005. I was only about 10 years old at that time, but I got a hot wheels model of one (the exact blue in this video actually) and I’ve been hooked ever since. 🥲 too bad I’m American.
Back in the early noughties I was seeing a girl, (briefly), who had a Clio 172, which I used to pinch as often as possible. This had two advantages, 1; it was great fun to drive on the twisty back roads, near to where I was staying at the time, and 2; it got me away from her for a while, as she was a pain in the arse. Around the same time, my mum also had a Clio, but although hers was only a 1.2, it was still 16V, and even this was a hoot to drive, I just remember it being a rev happy little motor. I'd love to have a go in one of these though.
And I'd imagine the reason they still did a right hand drive version, even with such a limited production run, is because with no engine up front, to foul the steering column, when swapped over, its just as simple to put a right hand layout than it is a left.
Had one of these back in the day : ) it was between this and a very low mileage blue Escort Cosworth from a Ford dealership.. and decided a new car was going to be more trustworthy. Kept it for 3 years till the Renault warranty ran out and sold it with 30k miles on the clock for £19k.. never had any issues with it at all except the clutch wears our fairly quickly if your doing a few too many standing start get always as it has so much grip with all the weight over the rear wheels... surprised how the value has gone up since then. Nice to see one again.
