Is The Tascam DR-10L Still Worth It In 2023?

- In this video, I wanted to talk about whether or not the Tascam DR-10L is still a good buy in 2022. Knowing that wireless audio recorders are improving, can the DR-10L still compete? Will Tascam release their own wireless recorder?
And yes, If you noticed, I am missing a tooth. But don't worry! That'll be resolved soon!

I bought 2 for $100 last week. (Used but in excellent condition). Steal of a deal. I’m glad I got them.
Got 2 for 80 yesterday !!!

Good video and points made. Also, just a quick note, lower your background music a little more. It was a bit distracting when you were speaking.
Thank you for the feedback! I’ve started adjusting the music several videos ago and should be resolved 👍 Thank you again!
Nice job on this video! As someone who owns a Tascam DR-10L, I have zero complaints. Best feature (as you mentioned) is no one can accidentally turn it off while recording. It’s small, simple, works great, reliable, and gets the job done. Checks all the boxes for me. 👍👍
Thank you!
Thank you for the informative material! I have the black one and this has helped me with my choice. Congratulations on your first video! It looks great.
Useful video Background music interferers in listening.
Great first video Matt and thanks for the great review.
Excellent review. Thank you for creating!!
omg amazing first video man, didn't even realize it was your first video!!! loved every part of this, proud of u for starting here :D
Great video, thank you so much for all the information. The quality of your videos is so good, keep going.
Thank you very much! Will do!
Excellent 1st Video! 👍🏼
Fabulous job on your first video.... stick with it buddy!
I can 100% agree with Matt's review. I've used my white & black DR10-L units on wedding videos and countless interviews and they've NEVER failed. The dual recording levels are a no brainer fail safe. Matt talks about non compatibility between the Tascam lav used on the newer DJI mics, I can say that I tried using my Røde lav from their older RødeLink wireless kit and it works perfectly on the Tascam unit. I needed two black lavs for an interview (dark clothing) and it worked well.
Thank you for the comment!
Very helpful, I'm looking to start audio recording for youtube and this helped a lot - thanks!
Thank you so much!
I'm looking around for a failproof solution for recording interviews and came across this video. Thanks for the honest review Matt!
Congratulations on your first video!
Just came here to say that this is the best Lav Mic I've used and it's reliable. Also, the price is going down on this, making it more affordable for all filmmakers.
Thanks for the vid its really making me lean towards Tascam for my first Lav
That’s awesome! It’s still a great recorder overall!
That was awesome! Thanks!
Thank you!
我认真的看完了视频,您讲的非常好,加油!TASCAM- DR-10L和TASCAM- DR-10CS我都有,也有RODE Wireless GO,这些设备我都会用,并不因为TASCAM是老设备就放弃使用。
Well done Matt.
It isn’t only useful to wedding videographers. It’s saved my bacon several times; like a few weeks ago, when I brought everything necessary to a shoot, but forgot the one thing that makes my workflow go - the battery for my Zoom F6. If I hadn’t had this tucked away in my bag, the whole shoot would’ve been blown.
Hi Matt, was just listening to your review while pulling up B&H to price compare... and wait, what?! This is your first video! Of course, you do weddings! Well from a fellow UA-camr, congrats on starting your journey. For your first video, it was fantastic. If you keep it going, I'm sure you'll do well. Ironically, if I was trying to find something to critique it would be to demo it at some point in the video which I see was commented below and you answered. Since I am looking for a mic to improve my UA-cam audio that was helpful. I have the Tascam DR-05 now and use it just out of frame sometimes (when I'm on camera) but need to get a closer mic. I tried a RODE video micro but it didn't sound any better than my built-in iPhone mic, so that was not the ticket. I'm thinking about the lav route. Thanks again and good luck!
Thanks very much! Thank you for the kind comment on my first video!
Great video Matt! Thank you! I did some research on the DR10 and purchased on last week - I shoot interviews and training sessions and this looks like it will do the job really well! Once I get my first results next week I will purchase a second DR10 so I can shoot interviews guest and interviewer. This DR10 comes with free editing software, is this soemthing you use or do you use another platform?
Fantastic! I edit all my audio through Adobe Premiere Pro cause the editing process is very simple in my opinion.
Thank you for this video!!! It is greatly appreciated. I’m looking for a mic to record audio while using my iPhone and insta360 for video recording. Need better audio
Pretty good, I like it. “set it and forget it!” Good video, good luck!
Thank you!
Great, Good luck
Great video man, I love my Dr-10L.
Question, what type of key light, and back lights are those you used in this video?
Thanks! Used the Neewer Bi-Color panel lights as well as the Godox VL150! Video coming out on that soon! 😄
@@MattKendallPhotoVideo thanks! I’m about to invest in the Godox SL-60W with a softbox
@@epicdroneimages1128 It's a great light! Can't wait to see how it turns out for your videos!
Great review! Does it have time stamp to sync with video?
It does not. What I do are some simple claps that both my video and the audio recorder pickup so premiere pro can sync everything perfectly for me.
@@MattKendallPhotoVideo
But it's pretty easy to sync these days.
I find these Tascams incredibly easy to use. I use lithium batteries so I have zero complaints from customers.
Editors have told me the audio quality is very good.
We used a Sennheiser wireless rig near a police/fire dispatch center.
You can imagine. Zero problems with the Tascam.
What's the rode mic or DJI that can compete with this? That is updated? Thank you
The latest systems currently are Rode’s wireless go 2 and then there is DJI’s wireless microphone set. Both have been on the market for a bit now but are still the most recent mics to come on the market
@@MattKendallPhotoVideo wireless have their own host of issues
Hi Matt - good video! Quick question - I just picked one up, and the SD card door was quite loose/easy to pop open, replaced it and the second one has the same 'issue' for lack of a better word. Do you also find the SD card doors to not click in firmly?
Great question! For me personally I have not had any issues with the silicone tab that covers the SD card slot. It always functioned fine for me. Only thing I had to worry about was making sure the SD card clicked into the slot cause it is very small.
@@MattKendallPhotoVideo Yeah interesting! I had one tascam replaced it as the tab wouldn't close flush and the replacement had the same issue, struggled to contact Tascam support so just living with it, but it often comes open even when in my pocket..Hm.
@@RauriBarron If it doesn’t close flush, I would suggest trying to shave down any excess with a hobby blade. Those tabs will pop open every once in a while since it’s silicone, but I’m still surprised that’s been an issue for you 🤔
@@MattKendallPhotoVideo thanks mate. Yeah me too! It’s my luck 😂 never had an issue with an SD card door even on cameras notorious for breaking
Thank you for your first youtube video! Good topic to start with :) I've used the DR-10L for years and don't have much to complain about, except one time when it ran out of battery juice and made the entire sound file corrupt. Since then I use the function in the device that breaks the files up so that if the battery runs out, only the last file is lost (but really I should just be better at changing the battery). The other plug I'd like to put in for the TASCAM over the newer fancier DJI Mic is something that not many people talk about. And that is you can always change the battery for the TASCAM. Whereas with the DJI Mic, sometime in the future the battery won't be able to hold a good charge anymore (or any charge at all), and then you'll be stuck with a hunk of junk. Finally, the battery life on the TASCAM is such that you can set it up on somebody and walk away for around 8 hours (I think). With the DJI Mic, if you want to do one of those "set and forget" recordings, you'll have to keep in mind that you might have to recharge the transmitter a lot sooner (and even sooner yet when the battery begins to hold less and less charge). Thanks again, and I look forward to some techniques on wedding photography/videography. Seems like a real high-stress profession!
Thank you for your kind words and input! That is definitely something to think about as well with the wireless setup, but knowing DJI and Rode, they will have something better to offer to the market by the time these current systems have bad batteries.
nice video
Great. 👍
Great video! I’m considering buying two dr-10l’s. But I’m wondering if there’s any echoing while recording on both devices on the same time ( while listening in post)
.If yes how to resolve that?m
What type of editing software are you using? There are ways to cut down echoing in post and it works great in premiere pro. If you try to eliminate the echo completely it’ll sound off, but there are ways to mitigate it!
@@MattKendallPhotoVideo I’m editing in première pro.
@@ramonordonez844 in premiere pro, look for the effect called “Dereverb” and apply it to the audio. When you go into the effect’s settings there will be an adjustment bar that you can play with to remove the echo in the audio. Hope this helps!
@@MattKendallPhotoVideo great! Thank you.
What about using dynamics filter to remove echoing?
@@ramonordonez844 you could try it to see how it sounds, but I haven’t really used that effect. I’ll have to try it myself next time I’m editing.
Hey man! What are you thoughts on the new Rode wireless Pro mics? I'm trying to decide if I want the new Tascam Pro with 32 bit float or the Rode Wireless Pro that also has 32 bit float onboard. Unfortunately if I have to use a lav mic with the Rode, it's only a 24 bit recording. I would need the audio from the actual transmitter to get 32 bit float...and that would be in a grooms jacket pocket or a brides dress...what should I do??
Great question! In a situation like this I would say it boils down to personal preference as to how you want to edit your footage since 24 bit seems to be what you'll get using a lav mic. The Tascam Pro you'll still have to sync your audio with videos clips, but the Rode mics take away that hassle. Have you found anywhere if you get 24 bit using a lav on the new tascams? I'm not always comfortable using Rode or DJI mics for weddings because of how easy it is for someone to turn off the recording, but I have done it and its very convenient in the editing room.
I have owned the Tascam DR 10L for maybe 5 years, but never really used it. So, now I am moving toward creating training programs for Udemy, and may decide to use a webcam (possibly the Logitech Brio) with it, though with my mug on the screen used at a minimum. Mostly I will just be narrating text with no webcam of me speaking, so the Tascam might be all that I need.
Still, I am wondering how the sound quality is with this Tascam versus (let's say) a Shure MV7 dynamic USB mic. Will they sound way different? Am I better off just using the Shure mic for all my voiceovers?
Your thoughts, please.
The DR-10l is a good option for various projects, but Shure microphones are on another level of audio quality. It sounds like you’d want some control over your audio recorder which doesn’t really work with the DR-10L. If it were me having experimented with various audio gear since making this video, I’d go with the Shure mic (or something similar if you’re on a budget) and hook it up to a Zoom H6 or the Zoom F3. Great audio quality overall!
Which microphone setup was this video recorded with? Did you use the TASCAM?
This was recorded with the DR-10L, but If it sounds a bit scratchy, it’s because I attempted to try a new method with the lav mic under my shirt. Don’t recommend that method for YouTubing!
No way do I want anything to do with wireless audio recording. I have had too many issues. The DR 10L is great, and it never fails me. I do NOT do weddings. But I do demo and interview videos.
Do you use the auto gain feature? Do you see a weak point when doing so
@@thegreenworldch962 I use the autogain control feature to account for level spikes. The unit records two files at different levels. Rarely did I need the suppressed level file, but there have been a few instances when it really helped. It is a very nice feature to have.
I get card error on the tascam can someone tell me what it is due to
Can it be used for music recording with rode nt4?
I wouldn't suggest the DR-10l. it's mainly used for weddings, TED talks and such. There is a Tascam DR-10X model that plugs directly into a handheld microphone though if that's something you might need!
Both of my tascams batteries die quick, even with brand new batteries. You have any idea why?
There is a setting in the recorder that might not be right. Go into the settings and make sure the battery type selected is the battery type you're using for the recorder. If it's not that I'd recommend trying a different brand of battery to see if that's the issue.
@@MattKendallPhotoVideo that was it thank you!!
Has anyone here had issues where their file would become extremely “crackly” to the point of not being usable? I’ve had that happen 3 times in a row now. I take great care of everything I own so I’m wondering if there’s some kind of hardware issue in the device or if it’s maybe a card or battery issue.
If you’re hearing crackling in your audio the first source I would think is the microphone. Sometimes if the lav mic is attached in a way that clothing can rub up against it or if your mic is exposed to windy conditions it can cause that issue. If that’s not the case, I’d try a different lav mic and see if you still get that crackling issue. Hope this helps!
I replaced my stock mic with an Oscar Sound Tech OST-802 and it records and sounds superb.
They're great low/no budget mics from OST! The Deity W.Lav Pro is a good choice too
Bro trying to seduce us with that background music 🤣
Why do so many people insist on putting music to this type of video? I want to hear about the subject not listen to music.
tascam all the way !! wireless not reliable always interfering frequency and now tascam pro with 32 float de best
wireless can suffer bad interference wired audio is always better quality, I would never buy wireless.
