    Regarding dual subject interviews -- Why are you not getting phasing with the Rode? In both cases you have: two omnidirectional lavs, one per interview subject. What am I missing?

    • @MikeXGorman
      @MikeXGorman  5 років тому +1

      Since the Tascam's record onto 2 sperate SD cards, you'll never be able to perfectly sync up the audio. It will always sound off and there will be phasing issues... With the Rode, on the other hand, both tracks getting recording onto 1 SD card on a Zoom will not have issues since it is the a multi track

    • @dxsaigon
      @dxsaigon 5 років тому +1

      @@MikeXGorman Thanks for the reply! Even if you clap your hands or something, you won't be able to sync them well enough? I'm only bugging you on this one because it's precisely the setup I was considering doing for mobile interviews.
      Of course if using a Zoom you could just have your mics going directly into that, no need for the transponder.

    • @MikeXGorman
      @MikeXGorman  5 років тому +7

      @@dxsaigon Yeah - you put both of the tascam lavs into the Zoom, you'll be fine. But yeah, even if you were to sync them perfectly, they'd still be off ... I think im going to try to make a video about this in the next couple weeks

      @alantuttphotography 5 років тому +2

      @@MikeXGorman I hear what you're saying regarding syncing 2 separate files, however, with a 48khz sampling rate, the maximum discrepancy would be about 10 microseconds. Less if you use a 96khz sample rate. Not enough to hear. Plus, you can always add a delay to the signal to bring them more into sync, as long as the plugin you use can handle values that small.

    • @crooker2
      @crooker2 5 років тому +5

      @@dxsaigon YOu definitely want to be careful when recording multiple sound sources into two DIFFERENT recording devices. I mean, you CAN do it, but you might need to cut out the off-mic subject when you sync up the two VT's. That way, you never have both sources mixing at the same time... therefore no phasing. It adds work, for sure.
      The best solution will ALWAYS be to record both mics into the same recorder. (But always record them on different channels... never mix them to the same recording channel)
      You can also get phasing if both mics are quite some distance apart, simply due to the doppler effect causing problems with both audio streams.

    Thanks for this comparison! One thing you did not mention which made me opt for the Tascam is that the Røde really doesn't handle loud sounds. I need to record myself singing and several videos showed that the Røde clips if you 'shout' at it, no matter what lav you connect to it. So yeah for me personally the Tascam was a no brainer, since in all videos I watched it didn't clip at all. But I totally get the benefits that the Røde brings.

It sounded OK at 50 yards (when you were facing the receiver), but cut in and out at 100 yards. • @slyder4life
    @slyder4life 4 роки тому +1

    I tried using the Rode Go at a wedding and it failed miserably. I was never more than 30 feet away and the audio was cutting in and out (fortunately I had back up recording). It needs an almost direct line of sight and no interference to work decently. It is simply not reliable enough for professional paid work in my opinion and should only be used as a back up. It is ok for interviews where the camera is right in front of the subject and nothing is moving (like a UA-cam video) but for professional paid work it would still make me nervous. After that wedding experience I bought two DR-10L's... super happy with that decision. Glad I checked out this vid and read the comments because the idea of using the Go to plug into the Tascam to be able to monitor it's audio and use as a scratch recording into the camera sounds interesting.

    • @protoman247
      @protoman247 5 років тому +1

      AO&JO Photography phasing issues occur when you mic the same audio source at different distances and mix them together. What can occur, is that the audio sine waves work against one another and boost and cut different frequencies. This is called comb filtering and it is usually unwanted. Phase issues basically cause unwanted eq filters.

    • @orjanjhmagnusson
      @orjanjhmagnusson 5 років тому +1

      PROTOMAN247 Mike seems to address another phasing issue with separate bad (unprecise) written files when he only has problem with Tascam??? The phasing issue your explaining wouldn’t magically solve itself just by using two set of Rodes instead of two set of Tascams (both with same lavs at the same distance and scenario). His illustration though IS fitting to what your talking about. Well I guess I have to watch his next video.

      I thought so too, but it's actually not that much work to align recordings as long as (1) you use sync claps....turn on everyone's mic, bring them close together, clap your hands in some pattern... it's like the old production slate/clapboard way of doing it, and (2) use davinci resolve or other software to align your video and audio...and then hand tune if necessary based on your sync claps. Anytime there's an interruption to one of the mics or videos you'll need to re-sync-clap. The longer running your video segments the least amount of aligning that you'll have to do in post.

    DR-10L hands down the better of the two....just for the simple fact that you can record audio on a sd card, cant do that with the RODE

    Strange things to compare. Btw you should normalise your audio - it's very faint compared to most other vlogs I've listened to.

    equidistantly, yes, but you have the tascam pointing down, and the rode working with its internal mic. Not a comparison to me

    DOn't assume anything with the walking away from the camera clipping -- it needs to be explained honestly and technically proper. OR DO NOT,

    Interesting….. Your review was totally biased! Also, This is not an “apples to apples" comparison. The Rode never had a chance. You came into this with your preference for the Tascam since it was your “goto” setup. It was entertaining tho!

    that Rode is ridiculous... I'd love to see anyone clip that crazy looking thing to a shirt... ridiculous! PS: Be unique... Y'all try so hard to be too cool and too much like every other youtuber out there (you know who you're trying to be) so much so, that you all really look alike... but anyway... thanks for the trouble of posting this...
