    Him having that bad of a day and choosing to run instead of drinking is something that should be applauded.

      I cried happy tears for him.
      I also really appreciate that they included his feelings of anger and failure and shame. I could palpably *feel* how upset he was, and it really helped me understand his craving for alcohol. He did an incredibly difficult thing when he chose not to drink that night and do something healthy instead, and I am really proud of him.

      Yeah. I went on a three-month alcohol strike last year and a few people thought I was pregnant and trying to hide it from them. They couldn't believe I was doing it because I wanted to improve my drinking habits.

    • @rqtypegaming9241

      My friends did that too when I stopped drinking for a short while (deffing for boxing tornament) and it's nothing to be pissed about, really. It's just a sarcastic, funny thing to rub it in your face.
      Alcohol in moderation is fun and healthy even. Not for the body, maybe, but it makes you feel good and it's a key to many social constructs in friendship.
      Having a few beers twice a month with friends makes a whole lot of difference. And if you were to stay home and eat chips instead, you'd damage your body as well.
      Moderation is key, and because of that, I don't really think you should quit doing anything you enjoy as long as it's not making big changes in your health.

      I don't drink, and I never have. I'm in my 30s now, and my (lack of) drinking habits have been questioned since I was a young teenager. It's such a private thing, and many have painful reasons for not drinking, be it addiction, family history or medical conditions. No one ever asks me why I don't drink coffee, but alcohol is practically mandatory in our society.

I am so happy

    • @IschysSyrra
      @IschysSyrra 7 років тому +87

      These are toxic masculinity norms (where men generally "bust each other's chops" instead of emotionally supporting each other, and have to drink to talk about deeper feelings/love/appreciation with their male friends etc). It is supposed to be "funny", and the guy who doesn't just take the abuse with a smile is often diminished for that. (TW SUICIDE, MURDER) And throwing the abusive "funny" comments at them is not the same as being supportive: it is harmful, limiting male friendships, and is believed to be part of the reason more men than women kill themselves. In this society, called a patriarchy, they're supposed to be "manly", "strong", not showing emotions, and other ridiculous toxic norms, which gravely affects their mental health.
      There is a lot of research on this, so I am not just making it up. This is the sad truth in our society. Many men wish it was different, because there is so much they can't talk to their male friends about, so many emotions they can't express because of these toxic norms.
      Ridiculous people like you are defending these toxic norms, and you probably don't even understand you're doing it. Just look at your own comment supporting the facts I mentioned: "It was in a *playful* manner *guys bust each others chops* in different ways. *Dont think so deeply* lol".
      We all have to work against harmful norms, to stop sexualising and objectifying women, stop forcing men into the limiting box called "manly", stop seeing HBTQIA+ as less worth, stop the rising murders of trans people etc etc. And what we all can do is say no to our friends making racist, sexist, homophobic, ableist comments and "jokes".

    • @youtooberman9001

      Its common for people to have a negative reaction to you when you tell them you are not drinking. Its the "angry jack" response. It implies you know something they dont, or you are trying to be better amd improve, implying they are lesser and are doing something wrong. So instantly they become defensive on the inside, feeling like their choice to drink is being judged. Of course 99/100 times the choice to not drink is personal and has nothing to do with them as a individual, its a natural psychological response.

      Beth -182 Oh, hon. That's a rough place to be. :(
      Your self-awareness puts you a step ahead when it comes to prevention, though. So many people get blindsided by addiction because it's just never crossed their mind.
      I have a vivid memory of being a kid and learning what gambling was for the first time. My first thought was "holy cow, I can *never* gamble, not even once." Wherever that brainwave came from, twenty years later I'm still grateful (and not bankrupt) for it. The fact that you're aware of the risk is a HUGE point in your favor.
      Take care, kiddo. Never be afraid to reach out if you need to.

      I completely understand where you're coming from! I am 16 and my parents did drugs a majority of my life and my mother was an alcoholic. I always have had this fear of becoming like them. I was neglected growing up and it hurts to see them so reliant on something so short term. But now,I live with my grandparents because they both ended up getting in trouble and getting a warrant. Now 2 years later my dad is working and is sober and my mother is chairman at a rehab center. I am proud of how far they have come. I just want you to know you aren't alone and that I'm sure there are plenty of trusting people you can talk to. It will be okay just do not give up.

      Also, the signs would be hard to miss, unless you are forcing ignorance or they live apart and don't see each other constantly.
      To OP, that's awesome and I hope the best for you two

    Your friends booing... whoaa, that's sad! Peer pressure is a major issue when it comes to quit drinking. It can be really devastating, ruining all previous efforts.
    Especially if you want to quit because it has become a health threat.
    Small tip: a friend will not boo you, he just won't care about what you're drinking. And if you choose to tell why you're doing it, he will support you.

    • @ipetzombies
      @ipetzombies 7 років тому +41

      Johana Dautancourt So true. I've never been a drinker. I'd very very occasionally have one glass of wine or something but I just don't enjoy being drunk and God, you'd think I kicked people's puppies. Back in the day people used to complain and try to push me into it because "it's not fun if everyone doesn't drink". Psh. If you need to be drunk to be fun, you're not a fun person.

    • @nicolesvrcinova1482
      @nicolesvrcinova1482 7 років тому +35

      On the same page here. I've been laughed at by my own family for not drinking enough during celebrations (1or 2 ciders), I've been told I'm not a real adult until I learn to drink and get drunk a few times by my own mother! I'm 23 btw. Where I live people don't binge drink as much as in the US, but it's more common in young people. Add to that my dislike for most alcoholic drinks taste, heavy discomfort at the very presence of drunk people and introversion and you get the result of me being virtually friendless, because i have basicly nothing in common with most people I'm around. But I refuse to change who I am or force myself into doing stuff that makes me uncomfortable for others sake.

      Lol i'm aware but if I drink once every few months I don't see it as an issue I know how addiction works and how the community is but I'm clean from my drug of choice and any drug for that matter I don't even smoke weed so if I have a bottle of wine with my friends or family every now and then I consider myself sober IDC what people in the community think of it tbh. I obviously wouldn't if I liked it that much.

    I never really realized until now, that I stopped drinking about a year ago. I do still drink once and a while, where as I used to drink regularly every day, about 3-4 drinks a day. I quit due to low funds because I went back to school, so I never really paid any attention to it; but I noticed the same things throughout the year. Things just became simpler, I understood thinks easier, I stopped stressing out about things and thinking things through for myself just became easier and clearer. I've had little other lifestyle changes in the meantime, yet I feel like a completely different person now than I was a year ago. It's interesting to see someone else's documented experience through this and thinking back to myself.

And I am speaking from experience when I say that it is MUCH better to fail and retake a class than it is to pass with a low C and move on to an even harder course. Otherwise, you're going to struggle in the next class and you're back to square one again.There is absolutely NO SHAME in taking a little longer to understand the material.

    A less-obvious perk of being open about it: the next person in your social circle to get sober might have an easier time. The guys who were giving you crap might think twice before making a joke of it. Sharing our stories fosters a more supportive environment for the next guy.

    I love you guys :') I can relate to Corey's situation, I have chronic pain & it induces a shitload of stress which makes one prone to poor cognitive & physical performance at times, & ultimately, unhealthy coping mechanisms. However, finding alternative ways to calm your stress & manage your physical pain can be absolutely life changing. For me, it's things like doodling, playing guitar, massages, writing and being around animals & good company.
    Anyway, thank you so much for making this video, I wish you both the best of luck & a whole lot of happiness & serenity! Lots of love, from Egypt.

    Wowww watching this video is so inspiring. I've had a substance abuse problem for the past 5 months... just like him I was using alcohol & weed to "help" with anxiety. But in reality it was only making it worse & I became extremely dependent on it. So I made the decision to be sober for the next 3 months. Today is day 8... even though I have days where I'm irritable & have hot flashes I guess because of "withdrawal" for the most part I'm feeling a lot better. I feel more clear headed & free. I don't feel like something's controlling me anymore.
