  • The restoration of my Jaguar XJC V12 manual took 10 months to complete and in this video I go through all the costs on this project and all my other cars in Harry's Garage. I also explain why I'm using ethanol free storage fuel in all my bikes and why I use CTEK chargers in the garage.

Yes, I was wondering, too... I red issue 292 of evo magazine only some days ago, where they wrote about the GR Yaris if it is the greatest hot hatch of 2021. (I disagree with evo!) And when I saw the video I thought: "It only has 3, hasn't it?". :-)

Great post. The idea we are losing such highly skilled artisans is sad. For most people the cheapness and ease of use is more important than enjoying such well performing and artistic vehicles. I am always happy to see videos on older cars with history and class than some which outperform but lack soul.

I think you've done the XJ justice. Not only by restoring it but by making it look almost modern with that stunning paint job. One important aspect of the restoration is that you have enabled some very talented folk to exercise their engineering skills and, hopefully, they'll pass those on to the next generation. Much respect.

Having previously owned an XJ12 6.0 litre Series 3 Manual TWR with a ZF conversion (and loved it), after being forced through divorce to sell it, and later acqiring a low mileage (45k) totally standard Series 3 XJ12 that had sat in a garage for 33 years due to a broken gearbox, I was hell-bent on converting it to a manual, rather than replacing it with another GM400 box. Fortunately, I was given the advice by a friend whose knowledge I knew should be well respected, not to convert to manual and rather to keep the car standard with a fresh GM400. Having never driven the standard car, and only heard the oft repeated "slush box" comments, I was a bit reluctant to heed the advice of my well respected friend. He tried to point out to me that Jaguar had engineered the car, very determinedly, for refinement, rather than to be a sports car. The expense of the conversion, combined with his advice led me to the decision to keep the car standard. I have to say that he was absolutely correct. The "slush box" comments all turned out to be utter garbage. My car is mechanically superb. The engine runs exactly as it was intended having had a lot of time and money spent on the ignition system. The car is something salubrious to drive with the three gears that it has. Ultimately, in my eyes the XJ12 is a forgotten-about master piece in completely standard form. That's probably due to it's reputation for unreliability, which it unfairly obtained because of unconscientious, irregular servicing. But if one of these is maintained correctly...what a car, WHAT A CAR!

The projects this year have been among my favorites. A four cylinder Lancia, a V8 Rolls and a V12 Jag all had one thing in common. The cursed demon known as RUST. Great! Thank you for this. Yes, that is a lot of money, but for us car lovers, it is money well spent. Mrs. M, thanks again for your top-notch camera work and for your indulgence in our (not just "his", but "our") obsessions.

A wonderful year of Harry s Garage videos which have become part of my Sunday evening ritual.

Properly take my hat off to you for doing this work to the Jaguar. It does look fabulous and great to see it in the condition. The Coupe v12 is so rare!

Thank you very much for your videos Harry, I've enjoyed the restoration of the Jaguar as if it was mine; I had some doubts about how a modern paint tone would look like on a 70's beauty, and now I'm relieved: it's stunning! I hope the Espada is at Iain Tyrrell's workshop for a quick fix only. Please, do not let it go, I'd love to enyoy yet another video with it, no matter where or when!.

When I was young American I spent many summers in the London area. Like Bourne End. I remember seeing theses Jaguar coupes. Loved them. Still do. Actually more then Jag E types. Watching the coupe episodes brought back memories of my dad who passed a few years ago now. I got him to buy an E type and bring it back to the States back in the 70s. Wish we still had it. Thanks for the videos. Nice job on the Jag.

Thanks for an entertaining year of videos. I really appreciate the fact you share the costs of running the fleet. You have made some great selection on what to keep in the garage. I enjoy trying to decide what I would do different given enough money and enough space.

Anyway, great content, lots of insider knowledge shared and never a boring moment watching your videos. Once again thank you and happy holidays 🎄🍾🥂

Looking at your XJ-C Harry, I feel more and more vindicated about my recent acquisition of a mostly solid, complete and unrestored early XJ-S. It is a clean, low mile, relatively rust free car with a very nice original interior and it has quickly become one of my favourites. I must admit it’s scary as hell too, it tickles all the senses! It’s been stored by the previous owner for the past 21 years, and hasn’t been started in at least 7 years. I have not yet tried to get it running. The engine with all its plumbing and wiring on show looks so good to me also, that said, it’s internal health will be the determining factor of the project. If I have to open the engine it will be out of my league. So far I’m in the club for the equivalent of £1100 and dreaming of the day.
Congratulations to you on the successful restoration and thank you for taking the time to take us along on your adventure, it is a very special car.

Harry, I use Briggs and Stratton stabiliser, added to super unleaded in my bike, which I've sorned until April. It works very well, as I'd used it for a much longer period of time, when I had a retinal detachment some years ago. As it happens, I hadn't run the bike since early September but noticed a weeping brake banjo washer yesterday, so fixed that and decided to change the coolant three months early too and ran the engine to get that done and it fired up easily. I also use a CTEK charger which I swap from bike to car quite often. Love the XJC, particularly the fantastic colour choice you made.

The XJC looks fantastic, Harry-the color is lovely and glad you kept the wheels as is except for a refurb. The patina of the leather is perfect and agree with no vinyl roof-so much nicer without since you aren't hiding metal seams! I think its money well spent and can't wait to see drive reviews when weather/time allows. Happy Christmas.

The Jaguar is beautifully done, perfect colour and exterior. If I had the money and I personally was doing the restoration I’d go a bit braver with the engine (maybe even that 7.0L lister monster we saw earlier in the series) and I’d also maybe go with a nice tan/cream interior with some stained ash.

I used to end up behind Series 1 XJ's in traffic jams back in the day and they have always been one of my few 'golden bucket' cars. A lot of cars look good, even great, from the font, but the series 1's look just as great from the back in a way absolutely no other car does. It is the way that the large almost flat boot transitions into the subtle vestigial fins and the shape of the lights that does it for me. A lot of modern cars are shapeless blobs at the rear (although aerodynamically superior). £67k seems an absolute bargain to me (even if it is way out of my price bracket).

My grandpa retired and bought an ex demo XJ6 2.8 Manual and that is the car I have the earliest memories of and it made me a petrolhead. He drove it until he died 23 years later, I was 17 and my Dad sold it for £750 as breaker. If only I had that car now...

Yes stick with the period wheels. I have fully restored 16" wheels on my 93 Continental R,many upgrade to later 17" wheels but in theory you get a better ride with the more rubber as well.

Hi Harry, immensely enjoyed your videos this year and looking forward to the next. All the best to you and your family for 2022. I do have a question though, why not go for underbody rust proofing/coating (Waxoyl) with the cars you’re restoring? By doing so you could use the Jaguar more often, being a really good daily driver it seems a good idea? Cheers, Erwin

I love everything about the XJC except for how the exhaust sounds, call me a square or an old fuddy duddy but I think a very quiet but still there burble would suit it more. I am surprised at how low the total cost of your fleet is for the year and totally think the restoration costs on each car is well worth it.

3:18 This car is about comfort, and I'm sure going to say that those that have suggested to "go up a larger size", may have forgotten that. The tyre sidewall is part of the dynamic equation (Note: Formula 1 enjoy the "thiccness", for now).
Also, making new wheels isn't cheap, especially being TUV approved, to which I'd personally accept nothing less.
