I m running amsoil by pass filter kit BP 100 oem ram full flow filter and I'm changing them every 6 months my oil change every 12 months let's face it oil is stupid expensive knowing how often it gets bought it should be cheaper than anything. But here we are paying twice the price for every single thing for some reason. Any way yeah I'm pushing 862,005 miles on my 2018 ram I have replaced nothing on this engine but the oil. Every thing is original granit I put it on the truck at 15 thousand miles my first oil change I have no blow by I add nothing but 100% 5:40 full synthetic amsoil love it.
I normally dont drain oil. I probably change the filter and add more new make up oil than most. My Australian Jackmaster Classic is similar but is a little drab with a green color. I expect the oil in my gasoline engines to always stay clear. The diesel tractor oil will get black because some diesel soot is a lot smaller than 1 micron.
@@natealvarez16 I think it depends on the engine and your wear profile i.e. I change my oil at the normal intervals because my additive package has been depleted: TBN (Total Base Number) and viscosity are out of spec. You'll never pick up on this kind of stuff if you aren't doing oil analysis. The improved filtration reduces wear... so that's where the real win is. 🙂 P.S. I could run the oil much longer if I wanted to as wear has never been an issue due to bonding a lubricant to the metal (which reduces wear further).
The prices are a bit painful... but the filters certainly look nice. Glad more companies are manufacturing these kinds of filters. If you keep your cars for a while these kinds of filters are definitely worth investing in. 🙂
Trasko has a spin on filter that uses the same filter media as the bypass filters... and filters to exactly the same size: Tested with microscopy and oil analysis. :-)
F350 6.4 and been running for 10 months and oil is still clear but starting to show a little bit darker. I also added the oil filter cooler and oil is a lot cooler generally cooler than the coolant temp. Also coolant temp dropped by 2 degrees. Guess since the coolant is no longer really cooling the oil much.
That element looks the same as the one in my Australian Jackmaster Classic. The Jackmaster is a high quality roll of toilet paper in a sock. I have been using Great value 1000 from Walmart in mine.
There are several 1 micron filters now. In the 60s all we had was Frantz and Motor Guard. Multi grade oils were crap. Delo 30W and 20W were about the best oils you could buy. I dont plan on paying up to 50 bucks for something as good as toilet paper at cleaning oil.
Fitting a bypass filter is often a bit challenging for a lot of people. It would be nice if someone offered a fitting service. That would make these filters a bit more popular. 🙂
I was expecting a lot less black color for the return oil. Would it work at all for a gasoline engine, or am I wasting my money and just change the oil/filter every 3k miles and be done with it. Doing the change myself costs $28 for 5 quarts full syn including a Toyota filter. I can perform many changes for the cost of this kit. I appreciate trucks have huge capacity, so a change will cost a lot more.
In all fairness the oil that is in the truck has a really dark charcoal color right out of the bucket but the test results really did impress me, we are a year in with this oil and the original filters on the truck and it’s rock solid, in comparison a standard oil change on this truck with a decent grade oil and filter is 100-120$ doing it myself, given I would change my oil at least twice a year this would eventually save me the cost of the kit. All in all it really is a great product. They do have a lot of kits for gas engines.
Some diesel soot is non abrasive and a lot smaller than 1 micron. If the black oil doesn't stain the skin it is clean. Kind of like black coffee. The old truckers palm test is with clean hands wipe the dipstick in the palm. Rub it around. It shouldnt stain the skin. With a gasoline engine the oil should look clear on the dipstick if its clean. At least with my engines that are natural aspiration. Gasoline and diesel.
3:47 compare this to the ams oil bypass. Seems this is still sooooper black. Ams oil seemed to clean soot better in the return oil I’ve seen. I have neither, I’m shopping. So I’m not sure
To be fair the oil I used is naturally dark oil but even now when you put the oil from the dip stick on the palm of your hand and wipe your hands it doesn’t stain your hands like dirty oil would do, I am going to send off another sample here real soon so hopefully I can have an update.
Why can't they run the ISO test on amsoil when running the 1 micron filter? Is it simply because you didn't have the 1micton filter when amsoil was in the truck?
They are just wide wheel with a lot of offset, I couldn’t tell you why I like it but I do but I’m glad they aren’t any wider because it’s a little bit of a pain sometimes.
I'm not sure why that brand filter isn't filtering better. They claim 1 micron. Also, the amount of additives that Lorenzo is adding to their oil is actually worse. Might as well add Z-max or some other knock-off additive. No oil company tests oils to the extent of Amsoil. Just my opinion. But if Lorenzo or others were so good, I'm sure Gale Banks (king of diesels) would be promoting them. It's not about money. Gale has more than enough money. He's a perfectionist.
I see where you are coming from and yes Amsoil is great, that’s what I was running before I switched over to Lorenzo’s and the filter is actually doing an amazing job in my eyes because a year into running the same oil it is still passing with flying colors and not breaking down or showing a decrease in protection in any way. Now my only argument is this and I don’t mean any disrespect but if everyone listened to Gale Banks I truly believe the industry wouldn’t be where it is today, we wouldn’t have people making the innovating products that we have on the market and the tuning market wouldn’t be near as far as it is today.
Great Content just bought a 5.9 with 75k I was thinking about getting it one of this for health upgrade Is it easy to install??? Should I buy the amsoil one or the sinister diesel 1?
This kit is super easy to install and to be honest I would recommend this kit from Insane Diesel, the parts are super nice and the customer service has been really really good.
I do not have those issues because of the way my system works, those spin on systems require a lot more oil then this style, the system I’m using does not effect oil pressure on start up and the cartridge style filter in the insane diesel kit filters the oil down to a smaller micron then the spin on filters.
I don’t care how many filters you have or I have on my engine. I’m changing my oil every 6000 miles on my diesel. End of story. I do not believe an extended oil change intervals. I can see where an occasional oil analysis might be useful maybe once a year. But I refuse to go past 6000 miles on my 6.0 diesel or any engine for that matter
And I totally respect your take on this I really do, proper maintenance is extremely important and I’m not saying what I am doing is right or wrong but what I am doing is testing to see what I can get from this system before the oil degrades to the point it needs changed. A 6.0 or any HUEI engine needs nothing but clean oil end of story.
No no you didn’t at all, the thing that makes this platform great is being able to share your opinion and experience with others. Before I installed this filter system I was a once a year person when it came to oil and fuel filters and that was about the 5-7000 mile mark and it worked for me. So no you didn’t disrespect anything you actually added to it and I really do appreciate it.
Pretty much any engine that has an oil pump. I converted a flat head Ford V8 canister filter to use Scott 1000 toilet paper and put it on my Japanese 3 cylinder diesel tractor. I have half a roll of VIVA towels in it now. Used a Perma Cool 189 oil cooler sandwich adapter to hook it up. Jegs and Summit have them. Bypass filters hook up the same as an oil cooler. I drill out the orifice. I still have a few Frantz 2 ports. None that fit the tractor. Not sure they are available for diesel pickups except the older GM engines like 6.2. Havent done the newer GM engines. The old 7.3 Powerstrokes had a pressure and return port. Did a fleet of them about the time the 6.0s came out. They ordered the Gulf Coast O1s bolted to the frame. I returned the clean oil to the oil fill neck on the 6.0s. No fancy oil fill caps with a fitting in those days.
Oil testing isn't a real look, sure that shows what's in the oil, but honestly you need to pull valve cover and oil pan and check bearings to see if you are achieving the same wear or if the bypass system is starving the engine of to much oil pressure causing excess wear.
If there were additional wear, it would show up in the tests as higher levels of various metals. Based on the metal you can infer where the wear is happening. The bypass filter can't really restrict flow to the engine anyway because almost all of the oil (~95%) bypasses it (hence the name) and goes through the normal full flow filter. Even if the bypass filter clogged completely the oil flow would just go through the normal filter/path with slightly higher pressure.
Dave at Dave’s auto center pulled apart a 6.7 PS due to a failure finally (with the needle bearing on a lifter) at just shy of 1 million miles and the rod bearings only had a thou of wear, almost new still. It has this bypass system on it and he was religious with oil change intervals and additives. No engine repairs until the failure AND still has original cp4. Insane.
Its called a bypass filter because a quart or so of the oil a minute is sent to a depth bypass filter to be cleaned and sent to the oil pan bypassing the engine parts.
