Crown Roller: Cycling Rollers Re-imagined // Interbike 2018

- The Crown Rollers grabbed my attention here at Interbike as they're different than any other rollers I've seen. The drum shape looks like you'll be thrown off these in a heartbeat. Turns out this isn't the case. Here's me being proven very wrong on my initial impressions without first riding these rollers. Haha... I was watching you from the other booth and waiting to hear you scream for help lol. Nice 👍
Also given your KICKR chained to a KICKR video I look forward to your Crown Rollers chained to a KICKR on a rocker platform being raised and lowered by a CLIMB in a few years.
Did I forget anything else? Lol. For real though this looks sweet - sometimes it's the simplest things that bring the biggest smiles. Thanks for the coverage mate!
Never mind the physics...G O L D !!!!!!!
Good job on not falling off. :) Also for going there and actually checking it out and not just dismissing it :)
So this technology has been in use in industry for over 100 years, its how drive belts remain central on convex drive rollers. Cant believe its take this long for someone to apply to this use case. They look good.
Excellent!! Such simple, clean innovation, I love it. I'll bet we'll have more crown-shaped rollers in the future!
The new King of Rollers
Makes sense - rotating things tend to climb up a slope they encounter if it's slight enough. Just thanks to friction on the side being harder. Same thing everyone has experienced whenever they've been on a road with a small sidewalk on the side that they lightly touched - know how the sidewalk kinda sucks you up on it for a sec and makes you jump up? Same thing but far more controlled.
That said while I understood this as soon as I saw it, I definitely wouldn't have thought of it myself - well done and brilliant job to these guys who did!!!
The physics that makes the rollers stable is the same that makes a bike stable on the road. The geometry of bikes (specifically rake and trail) causes the bike to steer itself toward the side with a more acute angle to the riding surface. On the road this means as you start to fall and lean the bike it will magically steer into the direction of fall and transfer weight to the opposite side which rights the fall. The rollers have the same effect as you roll off the high center the angle between the front wheel and center of the rollers is always the more acute angle and so the bike steers into the center at all times. This is the same physics that make no-handed riding easy.
That is cool, good to see roller tech improving.
Who’d have thunk. Very cool
Nice Video, you reviewed many brands roller. Which brands rollers make less noise. Please suggest.
I guess it's the same reason bandsaws use crowned wheels to keep their skinny blades tracking on the wheels and not pinging off. I still don't understand why exactly, but it makes sense that if it works for a bandsaw wheel it'll work for a bike roller.
Great video, very cool
So Tacx rollers are concave and Crown are convex, and it seems you were impressed by both, Shane. The physics needs some explanation. And now the Elite Nero smart rollers are available. So what would the ideal smart rollers look like, and would they be better than a conventional smart trainer? Many have commented that smart trainers aren't the same as riding on the road, and maybe smart rollers would be superior; you can get out of the saddle and rock the bike, practice your balance skills, and could even incorporate a mechanical climber elevator. Do you have an Elite Nero lab test upcoming?
The Tacx rollers are only concave at the edges to keep you from rolling off them. The Crown Rollers are convex across most of the roller. Rollers are different to locked-in trainers. It's subjective if they're any better, or worse. Balance skills on rollers are not the same as what you'll use outside riding a bike. Elite Nero rollers are in the Lama Lab. That review is a work in progress. Not everything is put into video, so I can't give a firm answer on it going up.
Well if nothing else, Sagan would like them.
Carl Sagan? I don't get it.
Pretty cool idea.
not "smart" but "clever" haha I like it. Seems like the physics part is basically the same as having a rear cassette with bigger and smaller cogs. Your tires are driving the rollers, in the same way a chain ring would drive a cassette (through a chain of course), and they're a fixed size (so let's call it analagous to a 1x system). To maintain a comfortable cadence, you're going to feel less resistance when you're driving a bigger cog, or, in this case, a bigger diameter section of the roller. What's cool is that it's continuous, not a discrete 10 or 11 speeds like you get with a conventional drivetrain. Bet it feels great to ride.
If the price was comparable to normal rollers I"d be willing to give them a try, but $650 is nuts. I think mine were under $100 in like-new condition from cragislist.
Great ending
By making the ride "easier" on the crown rollers, , are you somewhat negating the purpose of traditional rollers?
MRo Depends. You're definitely getting more balancing skills, small muscle recruitment, comfort and natural feel, etc. than a bolted down trainer or even a rocker-plate. That's obvious just looking at the video.
And for a lot of people the skill-development is secondary, though I really don't feel like it's lacking compared to other indoor methods, or even outside.
I, like most people - have a WAAAYYY easier time riding between lines the exact width of rollers for miles than I do actually riding on rollers. Not sure what the physics there is, maybe something to do with the back wheel coming off having more to do with your balance and less to do with following the front wheel or something. Idk, but regardless I think a lot of people would agree that rollers are harder than keeping the equivalent perfect track outdoors.
That might be viewed as a benefit to some, but if it'a enough of a barrier that somebody can't even get started or can never get to a skill level where they feel comfortable using them regularly, for long periods, or even at all - then this is better than not using rollers.
In a similar way that light weights are easier than benching what you can only bench for 1-3 reps (and defeat the purpose for those already strong), these are a good and perhaps even necessary tool for beginners.
Rollers r tricky 2 ride. The Crown Rollers r very well thought out than conventional rollers. Have a side veiw of the position of there rollers. Look very closely or U will miss it
Wow very interesting.
$650 retail I'll have whatever they've been smoking 😂
They must have used real gold, lol 😂 🤣
Saw these about 6 months ago. Very pricey $$. Gee the look good & the science is pretty good. Hopefully Lama Lad can do a Lab Test in Oz.
Already done! ua-cam.com/video/1kYi_pBgeqs/v-deo.html 🚲👌🏼
Yes u did Shane. Should have looked 1st. I watched it. Thx. No hands. Clever lad. I did ask u quite a few months ago re Elite Nero2 Rollers. Ordered them with a $500 deposit. Unfortunately due Covid19 they r still on the work bench in Italy. Finally received a set of Jet Black R1's 2 tie me over 4 a while. Thx 4 ur XCELLENT info Shane.
Shane, did Von give them a ride? If so, what was her reaction?
No, she didn't. If I get a set for the Lama Lab I'll have her ride and review them :)
Do they work with ticker tires
Ticker tyres? Anything with texture will cause more resistance and noise.
wouldnt it be easy to copy this?
or even a diy on something you have
The first ones I prototyped were 3d printed and later lathed from wood. so yes. but they vibrated a lot because of the precision required on runout.
Kickstarter campaign is for US deliveries only.
Not any more! AU, NZ, most of EU etc.
Charles McNall -> Nice work! Thanks.
The gold standard of stability test benchmark: Crown Rollers after consuming Crown Royal.
There was someone sinking beers riding it yesterday! 🍻
Seems like there's a lot of drinking going on at interbike. First the fellow who walked into your shot and now this. :P
Word on the street is the show is really called Into-beers, not Inter-bike... ;) (I'll show myself out....)
Shane Miller - GPLama haha, perfect.
