FINALLYYYY I get to show you guys this video, I've been so anxious! I'm sorry it is a little late (I meant to post Friday but it got stuck in the approval process whoopsieee), thank you all for being patient!
You should check out Angela Clayton's channel on youtube. She does sewing vlogs which might be helpful for you to watch. Also, something she usually does is make a mock up of cheap fabric to make sure that things fit before she cuts out and constructs the dress in the fancy fabric.
This looks soooooo GOOOOOOOOOOD, Rachel :' D I'll never get tired of your videos and the passion and hard work you put into them. Keep'em coming my love
Where did you get your Ruby red shoes? Plus omg love this video I just love every single one of them you have inspired me to grow my love for vintage retro life style❤️❤️
Even if it's not accurate to Dorothy's dress, you could remove the zipper and add a lace up corset back. Then it would fit better and you wouldn't have to worry about adding more fabric.
Potassuim_Cation Quite often, when I make a mock-up...it doesn’t really help in the end, because it’s not the exact same fabric, than the one, I use for the actual garment. So that will sit/fit/fall differently anyways. I‘ve taken to measuring the pattern pieces and comparing them to existing garments. And when in doubt, I baste first. Also means less waste. Always hated, wasting so much fabric on something, that wouldn’t actually get worn.
@@SirenaSpades Definitely not true. You actually really suit thin brows! Also damm that dress is well made! Good for you for persevering! Each time you make one it'll turn out better and you'll take what you learned last time and improve! So exciting :)
Hi, yes the world is not only uber crazy right now, it's down right scary. It has been a very long and difficult year thus far. We can only hope and pray life gets better very soon. Take care everyone.

you can totally do big gathers with the machine! you just have to go a little slower and make sure you arent bunching it all in one place and just pushing the bunch forward, you want to spread it out as you go! you can also gather from both sides and meet the gather in the middle to make it a little easier! hope that helps! also it came out so good! and as someone who has been sewing basically my whole life its been really fun to see you improving with every video!
Mom made almost all of our clothes when I was growing up. When I went through a sewing class in high school she warned me that Simplicity can be some of the most difficult patterns.
Darling even when you’ve been sewing 40+ years they’re still mess ups. Every time you saw something different you learn something new and keep going you’re doing great.
The mug. That was my favourite part. "FEAR NOT, you will see her again." Your humour is the best ever. Also excellent work on this cosplay, I loved it.
Easiest way to gather a skirt is with floss. Take a long piece of floss, lay it down on the fabric. Put a large zig zag stitch in the machine and sew along the floss, making sure you don't sew the floss into the fabric but encase it between the stitches. When you're done, pull the floss to gather and you're done. All gathered and minty fresh. Gretchen Hirsch shows how it's done in her simple gathered skirt on YT.
For realises, what they ^^ said!!!!! Also, no joke, I once had a pattern tell me to Sew Invisibly a portion of a collar piece 😳 It's probably a real sewing skill but I have never heard of or seen in a pattern since. Kudos to you for making it work! It turned out great 👌
It's because you have creative brain that sees in spirals and openness and glitter and endless possibilities. My brain sees in straight lines and boxes; not very creative. Endless possibilities stress me out. (I do, however, love glitter) I totally understand patterns with its numbered steps and rules. Different brains make the world a good place. 😊
YES! Definitely! I always wash my fabrics on the meanest setting, (and i do it immediately when I've bought the fabric in case I need to buy more) that way i can give the garment a regular washing without any nasty surprises.
A couple of tips: The first thing that every novice sewer learns right away (and every person learns it the hard way), is that pattern sizing is different than ready-to-wear sizing. example Size 9 or 12 in Macy's is not necessarily a Simplicity size 9 or 12. You have to go by the measurements in the back of the pattern catalog or on the envelop. Also, buy some cheap muslin (using your 40% coupon) to make a rough trial run of the main pieces of your pattern. You don't want to waste your expensive or limited amount fashion fabric by cutting it wrong.
I love your Dorothy! My experience with commerical patterns is don't trust the sizes listed. I look on the actual patterns and they should have the bust and waist measurement of the finished garment ❤
I know if I go by my measurements on the outside of the pattern packet I usually have to go 1-3 sizes smaller as the big pattern companies tend to add to much ease 😊
So relieved I'm not the only one having trouble with their sizing. With other companies it's usually enough for me to go down a size and do minor adjustments, but with them nothing's truly worked out (yet anyway)...
Seconded. This is the first thing I tell people who talk about wanting to sew their own clothing. Pattern sizes very rarely match off the rack sizes, so you need to compare it to your actual measurements to get the right fit.
YESSSSSSS DOROTHY YESSSSSSS just wanted to tell you I absolutely love your videos. I have also struggled with Simplicity patterns being... somewhat off in sizing. It's so exasperating. You're a trooper for getting the whole look finished! Congratulations :)
The sizing on patterns has been off for me so many times that I now deliberately cut out my patterns one size too big, then sew a lot of darts and pleats to make the item more fitted.

How beautiful and bitter sweet is it that decades later we still admire her and aspire to look like her when she was always told she wasn't beautiful cuz she had a different look for hollywood. If she knew you were taking the time to celebrate her every detail ohymgosh ! ♡♡♡♡
You're doing so well with your new sewing hobby! i'm proud of you. :) Also the best way to make sure the final garment is your size, is to make a really rough mock up from cheap fabric before you start sewing the actual dress. Then even if the pattern fits you OK, you can adjust to make it better
I love this. When I was like 3 or 4 the wizard of oz was my favourite thing so my grandma made me a Dorothy dress for Halloween (since she use to be a dressmaker).
When my parents forst divorced, my father used to call me and we would sing "If I only had a brain" to one another and I remember my mother telling me how important this movie was tk her because it was the first film she ever saw in color... you absolutely did Judy justice and you looked amazing. Thank you for this. 💖
You look just like her and this dress looks so much like the original! Those reveal shots look so much like the movie and as someone who watched The Wizard of Oz every day after coming home from school as a kid, this looks spot on!
I loved this, it turned out so perfect (but honestly you rarely go amiss in the end) The bodice looks lovely. And the cinematography at the end was excellent.
Great job! Making dresses intimidates me! I've been sewing for 3 years and I still can't read a sewing pattern! The struggle is real!! I'll definitely check out that website!

A sincere, heartfelt thank-you from this novice sewing adventurer for including moments like you googling the meanings of terms/problem-solving your way through pieces of these projects. It sets an incredible example and helps me feel good about seeking out the information instead of my usual approach, which is just, you know, sobbing on the floor and quitting
Bravo 👏 I felt so bad for you when it didn't fit but then you were so okay with it you taught me how to deal with less than perfect results when learning a new skill! Fabulous! Tfs and for being you. 😁
This turned out so well! So many people I follow on UA-cam who sew will make a mock-up first. I’ve learned from watching these amazing seamstresses, as even they will have to adjust their patterns (both professional patterns and their own designs). Well done!
I can't believe you trimmed your eyebrows to fit this cosplay 😂 but honestly, they look great! This whole cosplay is so amazing, I'm forever in awe of your talents ❤
This looks so perfect!! Amazing job following the pattern. Pressing seams as you go honestly goes so far to making a crispy finish. Also as you sew more and more pattern you'll figure out that most garments go together in pretty much the same way and you'll be less dependant on the impossible to understand pattern directions
I absolutely love watching you go through this process -- learning new skills for a hobby, especially costuming. So familiar! My grandmother taught me to sew when I was a kid, and I didn't pick it back up until I was in my late 20s. For the past decade or so, I've done a new costume each year, and each has required exploration of new skills, between the soft goods and the prop-making. I spend waaay more time on UA-cam and Craftsy than I'm willing to admit sometimes! Pushing through the challenges, I'm always so much more proud of the end product because I kept at it. That being said, I'm still not all that great at prop making. Thank heavens for friends who are! The trick I learned about machine gathering -- move and spread the gather a bit at a time, as it keeps from building up too much tension on those bobbin threads. Also, leaving both ends open on a particularly long gather means that you can pull from both sides. You just have to make sure that you give yourself enough length to do so. =D Also, serious kudos on the dress. Set-in sleeves of any sort are a PITA, and the dress turned out really well. Even your work on the back was good, given the level of frustration you had to be dealing with! Just remember to check the pattern measurements for your widest point, and use that size. For example: my sewing patterns are cut at twice the size of my off-the-rack clothing. SO rough on the self-image sometimes. Oof. TL;DR: You looked amazing! Keep up the hard work, and thanks for sharing your journey with us!
Yayyy!!! It's exactly one of the best for you! I think most of us where wishing to see you do this one one day!!! And that day has come!!! Yayyy!!! 😘😘😘
I thoroughly enjoyed this on so many levels! The sewing, the eyebrows (they suit you better ), the wig but your own hair is beautiful without it, the lovely presentation and humour. What a star xxx I subscribed x
You look JUST LIKE HER! I love the outfit and the hair style and color looks perfect! (although I think in the movie, Dorothy's lips were more of a berry color or pink, yours look more coral color)
Awesome job! Hint for gathering by machine: get crochet thread or a very thin string) set machine to the widest zig zag stitch. Put crochet thread down the middle of the foot on the machine, and zigzag over the thread so the thread doesn’t get caught, just held down. Then pull that string to draw up the gathers! Great job with the bias tape for the strip on the skirt! That is the same way you make bias binding for a quilt, etc. I think you did great all the way around, sewing patterns are not the most intuitive things to read! Don’t go by your normal clothing size either, use the measurements on the envelope. The size you are in a sewing pattern will always be a lot bigger than ready to wear clothes. It is hard when you want to just jump right into sewing the garment but take time to do a mock up, you will never be sorry. Use old sheets or whatever to make the mock up and then you will know where to make adjustments. Give yourself a serious pat on the back because not many people who have only used a sewing pattern once before could have gotten that bodice to look the way you did! Kudos upon kudos. I have sewn for years (ok, decades, if you want the truth, lol) and you seriously did a great job.
The look is amazing! It's fun and inspiring to watch you learn your way through sewing, and I honestly hadn't know those straps on the front of Dorothy's dress existed until now. I hope you keep having fun with your sewing!!!
Honestly you did fabulously! The dress, makeup and hair looks perfect! I've been sewing for years and still have a horrible time with making binding. If you don't mind, I'd would like to give you a couple hints, NEVER trust pattern sizing! Always, always wash, dry and iron your fabrics ( according to the manufacturer's instructions) and iron your patterns. These tips will help you save fabric and your sanity.
I really like the... floof? of the dress. When you twirl and the dress flows out but since the dress has such a long hemp at the bottom it stayed down. I love that.
And what a clever way. I've made bias tape in the past, but by cutting it and then sewing the strips together. This seems to be so much easier and less work. *mindblown*
Hey Rachel, during the holiday season you've kept me company, and encouraged me to pick up and finish one of my projects, the beekeeper's quilt. I started it back in 2013, and hadn't picked it up since 2017, and I'm proud to say it's done!! Thanks for keeping me company.
Hi! Fashion student here, something we do at school that makes life alot easier is when cutting out a pattern instead of cutting out each individual piece lay out your pattern uncut (unless using multiple fabrics then divide into the sections required for each fabric) put some weights on it I use tin cans with sand in them and cut out the pattern and fabric at the same time. Huge time saver!! Also you did so good!! It looks very good especially for just learning!

A couple of tips: The first thing that every novice sewer learns right away (and every person learns it the hard way), is that pattern sizing is different than ready-to-wear sizing. example Size 9 or 12 in Macy's is not necessarily a Simplicity size 9 or 12. Good to know! Although for this specific pattern the measurements were accurate to my size so I think I just messed up somewhere else hahaha
Why am I crying over the way she said "you can take a character you love and just become them"
I love your Dorothy!
My experience with commerical patterns is don't trust the sizes listed. I look on the actual patterns and they should have the bust and waist measurement of the finished garment ❤
Yeah! Actually, Simplicity specifically is a company that I've had issues with in the past. Their sizes usually aren't correct.
That is partially because they are closer to original (aka vintage) sizing, not the vanity sizing that mass fashion uses these days.
I know if I go by my measurements on the outside of the pattern packet I usually have to go 1-3 sizes smaller as the big pattern companies tend to add to much ease 😊

*edit* and you even shaved your eyebrows too oMG THE DEDICATION 😭❤ i love it sm.
Heehheee🙈❤️❤️
OMG I love this, I am a huge Dorothy fan but the music you use LOL, it makes my puppy howl And Im over here dying ROFL
Same here! When she pulled out the razor I said out loud "No Way!" Kudos Rachel!
Great Video!!! Totally digging the “wicked witch is dead” dance breaks! 😜
I laughed my way through this whole video. “Sewing Hobbit. Can I get one of those?” 😂 Rachel, you’re the coolest. Love everything you post. 😊
You elegantly fit the character of Dorothy so well. You have the perfect vintage vibes to really embrace the 1930s aesthetic as well
Yayyy! Finally 👏👏👏 Heaven knows we've been waiting for this! So excited 🧡
This looks so perfect!! Amazing job following the pattern. Pressing seams as you go honestly goes so far to making a crispy finish. Also as you sew more and more pattern you'll figure out that most garments go together in pretty much the same way and you'll be less dependant on the impossible to understand pattern directions
Everytime I lay out my fabric or pattern my puppy comes and lays on it 🤣 she can’t help it! You did SUCH a good job!
Also, serious kudos on the dress.
Thank you for taking us with you on your sewing journey! Also, two good doggos in one video? Can only be topped by three good doggos.
18:00 to 18:03 : *IF I DIDNT KNOW BETTER, I WOULD LITERALLY THINK THAT THAT WAS A ACTUAL CLIP FROM THE MOVIE-*
I'm so inspired to actually break out my patterns and attempt to sew. I'm TOTALLY going to do it! Done! Going to Joannes today and buying the fabric!
AAAAAAHHHHH!!!! I love this so much!!!! I am in LOVE with this cosplay!
This made my morning! I've missed seeing you and frodo!
You are one of the most perfect ‘Dorothys’’ ever! You could be a Judy doppelgänger from other eras, too. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride,
Great job Rachel!!! It turned out great! Ps I love your pin cushion !!!! 🌱
I love these videos! Mainly because they make me feel less alone when I'm screaming at my sewing machine
Lol! “Mmm Rick Rack!” Such a good moment. I loved this video 🖤
The look is amazing! It's fun and inspiring to watch you learn your way through sewing, and I honestly hadn't know those straps on the front of Dorothy's dress existed until now. I hope you keep having fun with your sewing!!!
Great job!! There are some shots where you look just like her 😍😍 she's my favorite classic actress so I appreciate this so much.
Especially when she's messing around with the wig. So pretty
This is so freaking cute! I'm in love 😍
I really like the... floof? of the dress. When you twirl and the dress flows out but since the dress has such a long hemp at the bottom it stayed down. I love that.
You look so good with this make up!!
Your skills blow me away. This cosplay as a whole looks so incredible. The makeup is amazing and you blended the wig so well!
You did great! The skirt band is how you make continuous bias binding for quilts. Also were you using the correct seam allowance?
And what a clever way. I've made bias tape in the past, but by cutting it and then sewing the strips together. This seems to be so much easier and less work. *mindblown*
@@katinkasirena i'm a quilter and use that technique often. You can get 3 yards of binding from a fat quarter! Lots of tutorials on you tube!
I made this exact pattern and you wouldn't *believe* how badly the pattern explains making that dang skirt band 😂I was confusion
Hey Rachel, during the holiday season you've kept me company, and encouraged me to pick up and finish one of my projects, the beekeeper's quilt. I started it back in 2013, and hadn't picked it up since 2017, and I'm proud to say it's done!! Thanks for keeping me company.
Now all you need is a toto costume for Frodo
Yay! ❤ This is going to be great :)
GIRL! I KNOW THIS VIDEO IS 4 YEARS OLD BUT DANG IT! YOU*RE SPOT ON!
Absolutely beautiful!! Keep up the awesome work. ❤😊👍
