I Tried Recreating This 1800's Bat Costume! 🦇

- Nothing says "I Love Halloween" quite like frickin' bats.
So two whole years ago, I recreated a 1920's Halloween costume, then in 2020, a vintage moth one. The only LOGICAL evolution is a bat from the 1800's, eh?
I tried to challenge myself to use only recycled/thrifted materials for this one and it only ended up costing me 34 buckaroos! NOT TOO SHABBY.
Okay I never know what to write in these things so I will bid you adieu and hope you enjoy!!

It absolutely IS the batwoman I want

Batwoman, but make it vintage.
couldn't agree more
I have to say, Rachel is giving me a batgirl Barbara Gordon vibe with her red hair and all~ I love it! 😂💕
Sewing absolutely sucks 70% of the time, but then the end result is so fun and rewarding that you end up going straight back into another project and cursing yourself along the way.
Really though. It’s an unfortunate endless cycle really
Truer words were never said! Same with holiday gatherings...back when such things existed.
Sewing when I know how to use my machine is much more fun than trying to hand stitch ridiculous quantities of fabric (including faux fur) into a cloak on the floor at four am and crying-
@@poke-talia268 this is true, ugh, but I would still rather do the figuring out part than the sewing it up part.
@@poke-talia268 and waaaaahhhhhh! All-nighters no longer have any appeal
"Sewing sucks for 70% of the time" . Sewing is my main hobby, I've sewn my entire wardrobe and most of my children's and this is so accurate
I feel this too. I just like being able to design, recycle, and tailor things. It’s for the results, not the process.
I’ve been sewing for 50 years and it’s NEVER about the process for me- I find that part boring & tedious LMAO. It’s having the cool thing at the end that makes me happy!
Sewing only sucks when your machine screws up and makes rats nests.
💯 accurate my dear!!! After 43 wedding dresses and COUNTLESS costumes and projects!!!
Agree to all of you, but I do enjoy it when everything's working out during a project and I know what I'm doing. Which is ... not often 😂
"Isn't she too old to dress up?" Nah. I'm over 70 and when my family is here for Halloween, I dress up.
Your costumes always turn out great. This one is no exception!
Yup, when I was 4ish my grandmother and I got matching witch costumes and she had fun with it. But if you asked me at the time it wasn't a witch but a princess costume.
heck, I dress up all year long
I want to be you when I grow up. I LOVE Halloween.

Rachel: “This is one of the weirdest things I’ve done in a video.

😂🤣
You are not wrong
Or when she did it for the chicken wire ghost 👻
@@marshawargo7238 Another good one
or that time she turned herself into Eric Matthews
I love how Rachel considers laying on top of fabric to be the weirdest thing she's ever done for the camera.
Not wearing a fake pumpkin on her head or offering people free books off her back or thrift flipping an outfit for her dog or creating a wild west holster for a tea cup. No, it's gotta be the laying down thing. xD
I think the funniest thing is, there are a few comments along those lines, and it seems like everyone remembered different crazy things, there just are so many of them.
Doing a tutorial on how to make hobbit feet, featuring her spirit gumming hairy her bare feet, is the weird one for me.
“Three Bats and a Dingo” sounds like a band name.
Also, love all the spoopy green light.
Also also….. you are incredible, don’t ever think otherwise.
I may have pulled out a tablet and immediately started sketching this as the movie poster while watching the rest of the video...

@@krystelanderson5443 I feel like it would make a wonderful buddy cop movie.
Dingoes and band names just made me think about Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Oz's band, Dingeos Ate My Baby. I like your idea better tho lol
The parent CLEARLY failed that child who thought there was an age limit on dressing up.
If you can't dress however you want as an adult, WHEN CAN YOU?!
Preach it!!!
To be fair, I too was an overly serious child that thought having fun was foolish, but around middle school I realized real maturity was accepting that it’s ok to be childish and that being too serious will only stress you out. So there’s a good chance that child will change their mind in the future.
Yes! I spend more time now finding/making my costume than ever. 😂🎃
@@pinkbuninja6536 As a child I thought all the fun just ends as soon as you hit the age 18.
@@pinkbuninja6536 I was an overly serious child too. I cried for months about turning 12 because that meant I had to stop being a kid 😂 (as if I'd even allowed myself to be a kid before then anyway...)
I finally learned how to be a child when I was 19 and moved out on my own, and since then I've been trying my best to get back all those childhood years I missed out on, which means most of my free time consists of lots of cartoon-watching, tea-parties, crafts and art projects, dressing up, and eating ice cream whenever I want. I'd argue it's even better to be a kid as an adult, since I can just buy all the glittery stickers and candy I want without having to beg my parents for them 😂😂
Bonus: "it's freaking bats, i love halloween" 🦇

I'm a seamstress and the only time I find sewing relaxing is when I'm following a trusted pattern I've made many times before and using a fabric that behaves as I want it to. You're performing actual miracles of creativity out of second-hand fabrics and with no how-to guide - of course it's quite a stressful endeavour!
Ahh yes, I feel you! Hobby seamstress here but especially some fabrics are just butt to work with. Now I am making a fifties dress out of cotton poplin and I'm like..zen. Even if it's stripey stuff, or maybe because it is haha. Nothing more fullfilling than getting those seams to pattern match. But yeah, sewing like.. chiffon, sucks. So pretty, but sucks. Gotta say I always get a little anxious to see Rachel never make a mockup (have weird shoulders and larger boob so usually have to do some pattern adjusting) and to leave her edges raw. Lol. But it works for her!
YESS watching Rachel use second-hand fabric and just throwing the patterns to the wind STRESSES ME OUT. it is MAGIC.
I second this comment! 👌
@@EEJCreates And just because you know how it's done doesn't mean it's not magic!
For me, sewing is using a tool to get to something I want - like pants that fit, or a costume or repairing a popped seam, or scout patches. But creating - thats the hard part, and Eva said it well, you are off the script, using the sewing machine but making it up as you go along and thats HARD. You are awesome. I love your bat costume!
The fact you had been sewing for so long and didn't know there was a thread cutter on your machine! I would have cried from joy.
I never use it but somehow I'm still pissed that my new sewingmachine doesn't have one...
Sometimes machines have a little diagonal slit on the back of the presser foot post that is also a thread cutter. Sneaky.
It’s ok. I just learned three weeks ago mine had one because I finally read the manual after having my machine for a decade and learned that little bump was a thread cutter.

“Isn’t she too old to be dressing up?” The correct response to that is either, “NEVER!!!” or “Aren’t you to young to be such a buzzkill?” Love this costume!!!

ua-cam.com/video/SZU1glezsKw/v-deo.html, ,
That's so sad @Danielle C. to hear. I bet your costumes are awesome and original!
Most of my projects start with rage.
It can be the same way with my quilts sometimes. Planning is fun and you want to get to the "good" part, but you realize there are many hours of hardwork, broken thread and wonky seems between you and it....
I discovered during the early stages of the pandemic that I don't actually hate sewing, I hate machine sewing...
I think the too old to dress up thing is just part of that kids in a certain age reject all thing younger kids do and think they are too old for it now, and see childish as something bad. Then comes a time (usually one's 20s) when one realises there is no such thing as it being silly to do stuff you like and then one is not too old for anything anymore.
For me, sewing is stressful if I have a deadline and have to somehow meet some achievement. But it is very relaxing and rewarding if one project is allowed to take 2 months and the only judgement that matters is my own.
I totally agree. I have a linen shirt I am making and it’s taking me three months. I would work on it and as soon as it became stressful I put it down. Has it taken a while -yes. Am I enjoying making it absolutely. Will it be awesome when completed and I wear it out everywhere 🥰 😘
I think the too old to dress up comment actually comes from the parents not wanting to bother with taking the kids out for Halloween. I am 64 years old and still love to dress up in costumes. My Mom never discouraged it and dressed up to take us out Trick or Treating. Why do people discourage that creativity? They seem to be the people who suck the fun out of everything.
Just wait a few years then you find the on Comic Con, WonderCon and other venues like that. :-)
@@reginafetty6374 I don't think it's just about parents don't wanting to take kids out for halloween, as I live in culture where halloween isn't really a thing, but still there are this age when most kids don't like dressing up for some years (for ither occations) and think it's just a thing for small kids. But yes, parents approach has a huge impact nontheless.
@@meamela9820 could be a bit of both, in the US it can be quite the ordeal to take kids out trick or treating, so certain parents try to end the tradition on the early side. I don’t really agree with that approach but taking the kids out involves a lot of time, possibly cost, effort, and energy. Especially if you live in a state like I do where it’s usually a downpour/wind storm during trick or treating. Who knows though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The built-in threadcutter just reminded me of when, after probably a year or two of having my machine, I decided to just browse the manual. I'd always known about this weird lever next to the needle but didn't know what it did. Raise hand, as I am others too.
I literally just came back from fabric shopping, I'm others too!
Your sculpture skills with the bats amazed me. But the "two bats and a dingo" quip nearly killed me. You are one of the funniest people alive, and I absolutely love watching you here in your natural habitat of UA-cam. I hope you enjoy making this content as much as we all enjoy watching it!!
I would love to see a recreation of your version of any of Mrs. Frizzle's dresses from The Magic School Bus!!! ^^ Look forward to your DIYs everytime dear keep up the amazing work!
18:26 As someone who loves listening to ASMR of animals eating, that made me very happy. There's just something about hearing an animal eat that just makes my brain release serotonin.
Rachel: "This is one of the weirdest things I've done in a video."
Me: "....... is it?"
Micarah Tewers: *wait, what????*
@@YenniferGzz More like...
Micarah Tewers: "Hold my can of whipped cream."
@@krixkhaos You're damn right, total stranger
Pretty sure nothing could be weirder than the baby Yoda video
"It's fricking bats. I love Halloween" 🦇
This episode is true fucking comedy gold you deserve an Oscar I freaking swear
thank yoooouuu 😭😭😭
Question about the cape: Is there a reason why you did not treat it as a giant corset? That is a weird visual but the only time I have seen boning used was when people would create corsets. Even then, sometimes they would use Zipties instead of actual boning. Anyway, I have seen in the past, people would take pieces of fabric, double they up so you have an inner and outer layer, sew the edges and pieces together while still leaving channels open for the boning. The boning is then cut to a desired length and then edge is sewn shut.
I am sure I missed some steps in there but could you try the same thing where you have an outer layer and inner layer of the cape, leave long channels open when you sew the pieces together, maybe when see the channels into the inner layer, cut boning, and see edges shut
I think she may have wanted the super lightweight look and feel of the material, and more layers would make it less easy to flow and flap? And I find it looks more like a bat with the boning showing like that, it really looks like the original picture. More for the aesthetic and simplicity might be what she wanted, considering she decided not the make the bodice a corset either?
But these are my "I can't sleep and it's 5 AM" thoughts, so please don't mind me 😅
I mostly just wanted it to be lightweight and flow in the wind! (and i only had enough material for one layer ahaha)
@@becauseimafan yo we all had those 5 am thoughts. Mine typically happen with ASMR or Kpop but I getchu haha
@@rachelmaksy you know, when I wrote this comment, I was thinking about the lack of fabric because my "technique" requires a lot of fabric haha but it looked very bat-like in the Reveal.
Thank you for reply to me Rachel. Good luck on the move and I appreciate your videos in my Sub box. Happy Spooky Season
When the thread snapping segment happened I IMMEDIATELY went to my sewing machine to see if I could do the same thing, and I can, and I now reconsider my life choices... I know how you feel Rachel !
You know, to help limit Tornado Rachel, and help with the move and get a video out: Next month can we have a "Packing Hacks" video or a "Vintage vs Modern Packing" video or even just a Haul video where we get an update on your fabric stash and pattern collection
Yes!! Also, I'm sure we all love a good organization/cleaning/before and after video 😍
The reveal was EVERYTHING
Honestly what I really love about your videos, is that you rate your work after the reveal, and talk about where it needs tweaking, what wokred well etc. :) I think that makes your videos really authentic.
