The thing that will really help take your costumes/sewing projects to the next level is honestly just starting to make mock ups. If I am making something even using a commercial pattern if I find myself asking “is it worth a mock up?” The answer is almost always yes 😂 (all hail Bernadette, and Morgan donner, and my extensive theatre background for teaching me the value of mockups)
I think with the buttons, the top of the bodice could also pop more with black edging that matches the leather straps, but that's just my opinion :) I loved this make! I've been a vintage Noh Face for the past few years and this inspired me to mix things up!
One day was incredibly ambitious for such a complex dress....you nailed it! It looks fabulous...the weathering really brought it all together. I have been wearing circle skirts exclusively for a couple of years now, so here are my long-winded pearls of wisdom..... 1. If you add another inch or two to the waist radius, then gather, you can let the waist out in future years if needed. (add another 3 or 4 inches to the waistband, too, at the button end, & tuck it behind). You can fold the fabric in four if it's thin. 2. Line the waistband with iron-on visoflex type stuff. It makes it sit very neatly without rolling down, especially if you wear thin belts over the top. 3. Stitch the front of the waistband to the gathered skirt, with the waistband laying on top, upside down. Fold it over a fraction longer on the back, & pin along the back. Check the pins are running *inside the front seam*. then sew along the seam. This is called 'gutter stitch' & it's a game changer!!! (Thank you UA-cam channel Havering College of Further and Higher Education!) 4. Add a second button to the waistband to allow for waist fluctuations. 5. Easy neat hem: hang your skirt on a form with a waist that's tight so it hangs straight. Let it drop for 2 weeks. (half your skirt is on the bias! some fabrics will drop 3 inches or so - in alternate sections - in this time) Pick a length & pin. Mark that height on a wall or door frame (I use a card blutacked on), then mark that height all the way around. This allows a bit of extra length for your bum etc., so it will actually be level when wearing it. Make your form as close to your figure as possible (with cushioning if necessary). Press a fold over the marked line & sew very close to the edge. Trim excess off, fold over very narrow & hem again. Even though you sew it twice, it's much easier & very neat. Also it doesn't use much fabric, so if you need to re-hem after it's dropped again later on, you don't lose much length. (Thank you UA-camr Gertie!) 6. I get a 33" skirt with a 29" waist from an Australian size Queen flat sheet, a Double fitted sheet, or a Single doona cover. 7. Flannelette makes the most comfy skirts ever. It's like wearing track pants. It drapes beautifully & is actually very cool in summer once the fleece thins out. You can also layer them under your other skirts as thermal petticoats in winter, or under a sheer skirt for modesty. Phew, sorry to ramble....circle skirts are my thing... P.S. Hip dips here, too......that's why I originally started wearing full skirts!
If you ever do another project where your adding knit on top of woven or felt, use some light weight double sided interfacing. It will smooth & fuse the fabrics together.
This remains one of my favorite Rachel vids. The outtakes crack me up, esp. the spinning. I want the 'aahh AHH, Jesus take the wheel!' to be the notification on my phone when my mom messages me.
Tip for Zippers: recommend putting iron on interfacing were you want the zipper then sewn then cut the along the tooth of the zipper. You'll have a nearly invisible zipper.
Even some of Adam Savage's one day builds hasn't been done in one day, so he's lies sometimes too! Also, I love the bodice but I think it would look so good with a wider belt, and those sleeves you were drawing at the beginning!
Rachel, you had me in the first few seconds with that Dark Crystal reference! I LOVE your sewing and cosplay videos by the way. They're so much fun fo watch and it's really inspiring to see you getting better and better with each project. You rock, girl, keep up the good work! Edit: also wanted to add, when it comes to using acrylics or any "unconventional" materials - you do you and don't let anyone who judges get you down. We're all growing and learning and finding what works for us and we shouldn't shame one another for our tools and materials of choice. And the dress looks awesome!! I love it!! I hope you have a blast wearing it! 😀
Hi Rachel, you are wonderful and not the worst. When my friends and I tried to put on zippers for the first time for our sewing projects, we all managed to sew the zippers closed. Your dress is adorable
I really really just adore this. Like I love it so much. I love the desaturated look of it, I personally don’t love how bright Sally costumes typically are. I might do this for Halloween this year because I’m actually obsesseddddd 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
A good costume fix for making the waist more accentuated would be to cut an elastic band (around an inch wide works well) that fits your waist and tack it down on the inside of the dress to cinch in the waist without having to rework the pattern
This video, I swear, helped me get my business started. I wanted to make my own Sally Skirt (not dress). After I finished it, I got so many people wanting one, so I was inspire to make a business selling patchwork clothes. I am just getting started and it's slow, but this video took me down a good direction that I am thankful for. Thank you so much, Rachel!
@@ericadubach1974 I too did not like the slow and time consuming process of cleaning cat hair off my stuff. Here is how I was able to get some not all but the most highly visible cat hair off my clothing. Once I got home from work I automatically had a cotton house coat aka duster at the ready (I changed out of my work clothing), Link to the ones I mean as an example: www.shopnational.com/loungewear/house-coats-and-dusters And this way my two cats got to hog my lap all they wanted. And these coats wash up so easy in the machine. In the morning when I was on my way out the door I'd take a rubber dishwashing glove put it on my hand. And turn on the faucet, put my gloved hand under the water shake a bit of water off, and wipe my clothing with my damp gloved hand. Most not all of the cat hair will come off, and I repeat the process. Wet, shake hand in sink, wipe clothes. If you are worried about the cat hair clogging the sink, you can get a wire sink strainer and place that over the opening to catch most of the cat hair.
✂️ Wowsa. Should never have doubted you with some of your more 🎊vibrant scrap choices. Made the mistake of thinking you were going for a brighter, bolder look. Hah! Your paint detail & treatment was absolutely brilliant.👻 It really brought the shadowy, saturated, spookiness of Tim Burton's world to full life. Bravo!👏 📏Measuring & doing math...this alone is pretty scary stuff for a person like me who never seems to get the same numbers twice no matter how hard I try when looking at a measuring tape. Feel dyslexic about that. Compound that with outrageous perfectionism that amps up my stress level. 💻 At least with most math formulas & calculations today I can let the computer do the heavy lifting. 💧Phew...on that score! 🏆Seriously Stunning Sally! 🖤Adore your whole entire ensemble🖤...and your attitude along the way. Plus, the swooshiness of the circle skirt is utterly divine. So impressed by your mad skills & creativity to pull your marvelous looks together👗. 🔍Highly appreciate seeing your process & going along for the ride🚖. Bless you!!! ☮💛🌼💛🌼💛☮
This is FABULOUS! Especially when you add some detail to the top. And felt... In Orlando... In September...ummmmmm you'll be fine. The heat... The humidity!!!! Yeah... Yeah... You'll be fine. 😵
THIS is what I wanna see from a Sally dress! All the pre-made costume versions are so bright and ugly and made from gross polyester. I LOVE this so much! 👻💜
i literally made it my main priority to jam out to spooky scary skeletons on my birthday lmao (its in january) it truly is never too early for halloween
I feel completely horrible pointing this out but … it's like 90 degrees with a 100% humidity at Disney in September. The inner lining of that dress is FELT. Might I suggest bringing along a bag with a thin breathable cotton outfit to change into? Anyways love the dress, even though it's suppose to look ragged it's oddly beautiful. If you're going to do further adjustments might I suggest bell sleeves... but with a ragged edge to them, kinda like the skirt portion?
So much work but it looks fantastic. I'm actually glad to see a project that didn't go perfectly. I've never had any costume go perfectly smooth. I think it encourages new costume makers to see the struggle.
I completely agree, it's never too early for Halloween. Frankly for us "it's Halloween everyday". 💀👻🕷🖤 You did an Awesome job!! I like the imperfect hemline. I'm so excitedly anticipating the Disney photos/video.

Yes! In the movie it's very muted and natural but they upped the vibrancy to appeal to kids. I like the more muted look too! It's spookier! 🎃
Exactly!
Karen Soto I agree, I think this is the ONLY Sally dress I’ve seen that actually captures the feel of not only her character, but the film as well

They use it in a lot of costume shops for stage and film. They use whatever works, especially for plays when you are only seeing it from far away.
I totally agree! I have a shirt I made by stenciling a logo on with acrylic and a sponge. It's held up for over two years! Just keep it thin so it doesn't get hard and crack.
I found that if you blow dry the acrylic paint when you do it in thin layers on the fabric, that really helps, as well! It's awesome for costumes!
But also like acrylic isnt the worst thing... You can add fabric medium to it to make it washable anyway
acrylic is basically plastic when it dries, so it's really durable!

(Thank you UA-cam channel
Havering College of Further and Higher Education!)
(Thank you UA-camr Gertie!)
Between you traveling through time to laugh at yourself and Adam Sandler’s rendition of Sally’s Song this has got to be your funniest video. 😂
The dress is on point!!!! And why are you my spirit animal?!?!?👌🏽😂
Heehee thank you bb❤️❤️❤️
The skirt is PERFECT! The weathering really made it work in character! And it spiiiiins😀
If you ever do another project where your adding knit on top of woven or felt, use some light weight double sided interfacing. It will smooth & fuse the fabrics together.
Noted! Thanks for the trick :)
One day, I would love to see you try and do a version of Sarah's dress in Labyrinth, the one after she's eaten the peach and is at the masquerade
Yes Please.
And in true "One Day Build"-Fashion, this project took more than a Day. Adam surely would be proud of you Rachel!
this is the video I never knew I needed, the dress looks AMAZING😍😍 I can't wait for fall.
❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗🤗
I have never clicked on a video so fast
* edit * GIRL THAT DRESS IS SO CUTE IT LOOKS SO GOOD YOU'RE LITERALLY AMAZING
Heheee thank you bb 😭😭😭😭😭❤️
I think that the corset would benefit from the spiral pattern a lot. 😀 And, hey, that counts as one day, after all, you've started at ca.11 a.m.!😀
I didn’t know until now but I’ve been waiting for this my whole life😭❤️
🙈🤗❤️
What I love the most about your dress is that so many "Sally" dresses are so garish!! I love the muted tones of green and brown. Perfection!!

You're so good, hun.
I too LOVE Adam Savage!! Enjoying your videos as well.. Thx for sharing your journey Sister 😷👍✌❤🇨🇦
Cat glitter, the only way a cat can spread the love, LOL
Hahaha YUP
CAT
HAIR
EVERYWHERE
I gave up cleaning the hair off my stuff, it's just a pointless exercise 😩
@@ericadubach1974 I too did not like the slow and time consuming process of cleaning cat hair off my stuff.
Here is how I was able to get some not all but the most highly visible cat hair off my clothing.
Once I got home from work I automatically had a cotton house coat aka duster at the ready (I changed out of my work clothing), Link to the ones I mean as an example: www.shopnational.com/loungewear/house-coats-and-dusters
And this way my two cats got to hog my lap all they wanted.
1. Every day is Halloween, so people can shoosh. 2. How are you so talented, love? I adore your Sally cosplay! You nailed that look.
You are such a breath of fresh air! Love your videos and your personality. Can't wait to see more!
Bravo!👏
📏Measuring & doing math...this alone is pretty scary stuff for a person like me who never seems to get the same numbers twice no matter how hard I try when looking at a measuring tape.
Hey Rachel would you consider making a (slightly) modernized Ancient Greek dress?
i literally made it my main priority to jam out to spooky scary skeletons on my birthday lmao (its in january) it truly is never too early for halloween
Love the understated 50’s makeup. Reminds me of Audrey Meadows.
Costume designer by education and I’m HERE for the weathering!!! Distress away!!!!
My best friend’s cat is named Sally (after the same Sally) and she’s wonky too. Maybe it’s just a Sally thing 🤷🏻♀️
When watching this in the living room with my 2 year old he started yelling woah! At the tv when you were spinning. Haha great job!
It’s never to early for Halloween!!!!
I want to figure out a vintage Hufflepuff outfit.
I love this one.
Girl this came out so good! 😲😍 You found a perfect balance between saturated and desaturated. Also YAAAAAAASS All of the spins! 😆
does that mean we get,,,, a disney vlog 👀
I completely agree, it's never too early for Halloween. Frankly for us "it's Halloween everyday". 💀👻🕷🖤
You did an Awesome job!! I like the imperfect hemline. I'm so excitedly anticipating the Disney photos/video.
Dear lord that intro with the spooky time watch. You are just a freaking treat on youtube. Thanking the universe for people like you. Especially you.
well I learnt a few things today ... how to make a circle skirt for one :)
'aging with acrylic' is SO COOL ...
love watching your adventures
I love that end couple of minutes... that was all adorable and hilarious. love this video :)
This is awesome. Thank you so much for doing this. My wedding anniversary is actually on Halloween. I’ve never seen someone process in making this dress. It looks amazing. I’m totally gonna make this.
Nightmare Before Christmas, Halloween, Rachel, and vintage? my life is made
I love this. What a wonderful skirt. Reminds me of wonderful ones my friends wore in the 1990's
The jazz music adds so much to this vid. I really like the top of the dress as it is, but maybe it's because these beats are making me so happy.
It looks good, I like it!
