    This has to be one of the most epic F1 cars in history. Very fast in qualifying with the Ferrari V12 engine but it was thirsty and the extra fuel needed cost them pace in the race, not to mention woeful reliability. Bit of a handful to drive too I think but that suited Alesi and Bergers balls out driving style. Contrary to popular belief, Schumacher did not say he could have won the championship in it, he said it surprised him and it was a good chassis, more than capable of winning races.

      it was john barnards car. what do you think he is going to tell about HIS car? it's the basics of source criticism. like a driver who blames the car, the engineer blames the driver...fact is, that car was unreliable as hell. 8 retirements of alesi and 7 of berger. even the on board cameras fell of this car...

    The car was still the v12 if i recall correctly. In terms of qualifying perf, it wasn't too far behind. In the races, the heavy fuel load would take its toll.

    @jonesyfan1980 The 412t2 was good and the team lead in the championschip but not developed through the year, so it lacked performance in the last few races as both Berger and Alesi were to leave and particullary the relation between Alesi and Todt was really bad...

    This argument intrigued so I looked into it. If the championship was based on the fastest laps of each race using the 10-6-4-3-2-1pts system (i.e. Driver with fastest lap gets 10pts, 2nd fastest gets 6pts, etc.) then the constructors standings would have been: Williams 166pts, Benetton, 142pts, Ferrari 83pts, McLaren 19pts, Jordan 18pts, Ligier 13pts, Footwork 1pt, all the rest 0pts. So based on this, the Benetton was faster than the Ferrari.

  • @mrfadec
    @mrfadec 12 років тому +2

    The reason why Berger and Alesi struggled at Benetton was because all the key people left Benetton to join schumacher at ferrari. At benetton the baseline car was ok but there was little to no development there after.

  • @AlejjSi

    @jonesyfan1980 Well, Barnard was a bit of a problem and finally he was sacked at the beginning of 1997. He had his design center in britain and refused to work at Marranello. So most of the work on the 412T1 called the 412t1b was done by Gustav Brunner, so the car was faster towards the end of the season, when Berger dominated in Germany, than Alesi was on pole in Italy and Berger at estoril. He also could have won Australia if not for his own error.

  • @quench100
    @quench100 12 років тому

    Also Alesi average quali in '96 was 4.875 (5th) and Berger 5.750 (6th)

      Because unfortunately it took one of the most popular, beloved, legendary drivers in the history of F1 dying a tragic and completely unnecessary death for the greedy bastards in charge to do something about it. Equally unfortunate is the fact that, five years previously, after Berger had crashed and his car burst into flames at exactly the same spot, neither he nor Senna thought of putting in a chicane. If they had, he'd still be alive, or at any rate, wouldn't have died on that day five years later the way he did.

    I'm not blaming Alesi or Berger if that Ferrari had held together all the time it would have been Alesi vs Schuamcher down to the wire in 1995 not hill being completely outclassed in a superior Williams by Schumacher in a Benetton which was a complete nightmare to handle according to him

    • @adampetten5349
      @adampetten5349 6 років тому +4

      autorack1 Yet physically limited Herbert nearly matched Coulthard in that supposedly terrible handling car. Also Williams like the majority of pre RB Newey cars was made of tissue paper. You can't win if you don't finish. The number of mechanical dnfs by 1995 Williams and 1999 McLaren was incredible if exceeded by 1989 Ferrari. Also, Benettons pit crew and strategy were greatly superior to that of Williams.

    1996 Garbage Car but he was still the class of the field
    1997 Car still not the best but he still was the class of the field with an inferior car
    mistakes by other drivers cost him the title
    1998 Crash into DC in Belgium when he was leading by 40sec cost him the title car was still completely inferior to the McLaren
    1999 Broken Leg would have won if that did not happen Eddie Irvine almost won the title in that car for crying out loud
    2000 retired from 3 races straight still won the title

    Berger and Alesi were SO OVERRATED.
    At least Jean was exciting to watch, but Berger wasn't, and just got seats because he was good at cocktail parties and made political connections which helped him post-F1 too. They were not top-level guys in my view, Schumacher would have won the title in the 96 Benetton.

    • @ssssssss6889
      @ssssssss6889 Місяць тому

      And realisticaaly , they couldn't be top guys like at time Senna and Schumacher. Senna and Schumacher were the first breed of F1 drivers that started racing karts at the age of 5 ; Berger and Alesi were by 1995 amongst last drivers who only started racing mid to late teens and plus never raced karts on a professionnal level. In that view and sense , completely different generations of drivers. The end of an era and the beginning of another.

    • @ssssssss6889
      @ssssssss6889 Місяць тому

      Schumacher would may be get better results in the 95 ferrari and 96 benetton. But bear in mind that in 95 while ferrari was competitve in the first races , the gap with Williams and Benetton in quali in the second half of the season gradually grow up to 1.5 sec/lap. Not enough developoement thru ou the season and awfull reliability. Also , 96 benetton was the least realible benetton ever multiple time retiring with suspension problems.Most notably , Berger in Aegentina while battling for the lead and Alesi retiring at Monaco from the lead. I ' m sure Schumi in both cases would have done better but nit enough to win the title.
