Rock Your Best Vocals thank you for the reply. I’m 47 and started lessons a few months ago, it’s far more physical than I thought and I’ve played guitar in bands on and off for years! Your vids are really good, no nonsense and easy to follow. Cheers from Ireland.
Hey Joe, apologies for delay in replying - for some reason this one escaped me! Yes, singing is extremely physical and MOST don't respect that aspect of it which is why they never advance far enough to 'get good'. I'm in Ireland (Dublin), just wondering who you are taking lessons from? I'm always interested in taking more lessons (if you know Randy Rhodes Ozzy's guitar player used to take lessons from someone in every place they stopped on tour - THAT is dedication!) Rock Your Best Vocals wow, I was sure you were in the US! Thankfully I’ll be back getting lessons next week from Chris Currid, who is a great teacher and a great guy!
Hello from Montreal I do not understand much English unfortunately but the little I understood in your video helps me a lot because I like to sing in English ... you have a beautiful voice that allows you to go into treble and just close to the tenor mine is baritone which allows me to play a bit in the treble but not as long as you and like Axl ... I manage to imitate Axl but after 2 or 3 songs I couldn't the voice is too high for me ... have a nice day take care of you
Merci beaucoup and Enchanté from Ireland!!! I'm a baritone too, but trained myself to extend my range to be able to sing almost anything in any range, so you can do it too! @@RockYourBestVocals when you sing the clean parts i kind of struggle to get that high with compression without breaking into different notes. Or opening the cords with more air. I like the compressed option as it allows the grit to be added but the high notes like ahh ahh ahh ow sweet child is hard with compressed. Any tips
Thanks for the suggestion - I'm not familiar with him but checking some videos, like his vibe! Saw a video 2015 of him playing with Green Day at HOB Cleveland - so cool!!!
It took me a long time because I’m self taught. Fortunately I can teach others the techniques in a few short lessons, so they can take a “short cut” to the head of the line 😊👍🏼
You have mastered getting high in full voice using compression. Its hard and hit and miss for me . Im sure there's a switch I turn on every so often but forget where the switch is sometimes
You too will master it with practice, it's just like when you move into a new house.... you don't know where the switches are, but after a few years you can find them in the dark with ease... It's all about putting in the 'reps' 😉👍🏼 Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!!🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Absolutely great stuff! As far as I search, they only person to ACTUALLY SHOW how to sing exactly like him, with the techniques and everything.. I just found your channel and will surely just sit whenever I have time and watch all of your videos 😂 it seems like this channel is a treasure after all! Quick question tho. Even tho I "understand" the technique and try it myself with "OK" results, my throat gets "burned" after 5-10 mins of continuous singing (if I cover 2 songs for example), and the higher the notes I hit, the faster I get sore and can't "re-hit" the same notes for a couple of hours. Is this fixable? Do I just need to keep practising in order to get my chords more used to hitting higher notes with rasp easier, or will this technique damage my chords permanently? Thank you in advance and keep up the great work!
Oooh the inability to “re-hit” is likely due to swollen (inflamed) vocal folds due to excessive air passing through them. You need to work on holding back the air. Try to pretend you are singing under water and try not to make any bubbles. I can share more specific techniques for this if you want to book a 1:1 session - IF you’re serious about singing…and if you value preventing damage and pain 🤷🏼♂️
I would suggest trying to 'hum' the lines (like you are making all the sound come out your nose), and slowly begin to articulate the phrases with the actual words... hope that helps!
Ive done it a different way. It sounds more like him but its hard to say words that have T, And Q because of the way i let the rasp and breath exit. I sung about 7 songs yesterday and today my throat is still sore. But i dont know if thats from the rasp, or the force i had to use to pronounce a few words. Or just from the pure screaming. Is there a specific way im supposed to exhale while screaming?
oooooohhhhh yes, if your throat is sore, you're doing something 'wrong' (I don't like the idea of right/wrong, but proper sustainable vocal technique should never hurt)... could be where you are 'forcing' it from... try pushing the air from your abdomen and RELAX your throat - let me know how it goes... sign up for my FREE training on my website (link in description) which should help with the concept! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!!🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Trying my luck if anyone can help me out. I have no problem with the rasp in headvoice and it sounds almost identical to Axl. I have problems with rasp in my chest voice (verse of Nightrain and that kind of register) anyone any tips on that?
Hi Viktor I am able to add rasp to my chest register by adding more compression from your diaphragm/abdomen... also what may help you is when I have 'rasp' in headvoice I slowly bring the note down to my chest and feel that rasp engaged the whole way... if it cuts out, analyze WHERE it cuts out, and go from just before it cuts out to see what different feeling you experience. Much of singing is about feel so nobody else can really tell you how something SHOULD feel because everyone feels something slightly different.
@@RockYourBestVocals thank you very much for the quick answer, and for the video itself aswell. Helped me out a lot when I joined a GnR tribute as a singer last year!
I tried it. I noticed in Sweet Child I think Axl uses the front of his throat more, but Welcome to the Jungle he uses the back. It just sounds Adam Sandler-y if I use the back of my throat for Sweet Child of Mine. But the technique you showed is right. Thank you for sharing! I will practice this a lot more. Any way to prevent the throat from becoming hoarse after two songs? I noticed even Axl ends up sounding too gritty by the middle of the concert. I guess I just need to let as little air out as possible, reserve the grit for the important parts...
I'll throw my .02 cents in on this one. I approach Axl's upper register as a falsetto with grit. Because in your examples when you switch to "clean" mode to sing clean in that upper register, I bet a million bucks Axl can't sing clean up there. I've never heard him do it anywhere even once. Hence the vocal technique he developed which I call "Gritty Falsetto" lol. And when he does sing clean, it's always in the lower register. And his voice does go LOW and deep. Whether it's singing "Where do we go now", or an even better example is most of the vocals on the song "It's So Easy". He's clean and low. In fact there's not much grit in there at all when he's down that low in baritone.
You're probably accurate in that assumption that he could be using a gritty falsetto... hid voice does have a sort of 'lighter' feel in the upper register, so yeah it sounds like he is using a more 'relaxed' voice (i.e. modified falsetto) Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
I have no trouble making the sound at all, but when i try and speak or sing in that voice it sounds super goofy, do you know how to help with this? Or should i just keep practicing? Great video btw.
Hey Hani appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment! Yes, when I started out I sounded WAY goofy, but you just keep practicing and you will eventually "Feel" that magic spot where it sounds good... when you get it, keep practicing that, and it will become 'muscle memory'! (main point is keep at it BELIEVING that you WILL EVENTUALLY GET IT!!!) 😊👍
My biggest tip for finding your own voice, is write your own songs. What comes through you when you are writing your own songs is the most true version of you (if you follow me on instagram @rockyourbestvocals, you can see where I write a song a day and post to my story... doesn't matter to me what I write, I just put down the first thing that comes to me and I don't care if it's good or bad - don't judge it because it comes from the universe... let me know how you get on with that! 🤘😎🤘

Heh thats again me Sorry for asking a lot 😂 But I saw video with cover of gnr song And in comments i saw guy who told that 'axl wasnt actually screaming and its only falsetto with body expression' or sth like this How you see this? Axl was screaming this? My knowledge about singing is small because i never had lessons or sth like this (only your channel, thank you :D) (Sorry for asking again and sorry for my english im still learning)
Axl most certainly was NOT singing falsetto - you can see it in his body on live performances, he is pushing the notes... unless that was a recent performance they were commenting on. You CAN get some similar rasp with using a type of 'falsetto' but it's not EXACTLY a falsetto voice, but more of a 'modified falsetto' - that's because falsetto is typically very airy (a lot of breath pushed through the vocal chords). I hope this helps! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!!🤘😎🤘
@Rock Your Best Vocals ah so ok, that was performance from around 1990, but as "modified falsetto" you mean something like you explained how robert plant sing? axl sing like this later in his career, for example here: ua-cam.com/video/b5-JetB_z2U/v-deo.html for example in 1987 he sing with rasp but not that weird sound, but its great, axl sing very nasally right?
Thanks for sending that live in paris - actually he has quite an 'open throat' style (not necessarily nasally), but he pushes that 'raspy' sound out the top of the back of his nasal passage. The open-throat technique combined with too much air expelling caused a lot of damage to his voice, and he has lost range because of this abuse. see the video at 3:01 where he sings 'count your stars I'm home again' - you can hear the rounded open throat on 'count'.... Thanks for takin the time to watch and comment! 🤘😎🤘
Hi Harry, I'm sure that a lot of people share that opinion... regardless, it's YOUR opinion and is ALWAYS of VALUE here at RYBV - thanks for sharing! 😬👍🏼 And thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
My throat hurts watching this! Poor axl, super cool and unique voice but it seems he’s always had some difficulty maintaining it over the years. Even in his prime it was hit and miss and would at times lose the melodic quality and start sounding like skelator. Seem very few of the rock legends can pull off those types of vocals as they age. I think maybe Steven Tyler is one example of someone keeping their voice more consistently in older age.
Yes agreed 👍🏼 Steven Tyler is one of the BEST examples in my opinion of how longevity can be sustained - although surgery aside, his technique is impeccable to this day 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
@@RockYourBestVocals here are some classic 80s unique vocalists you should dissect. Morrissey (of the Smiths), Robert Smith of The Cure, and Elvis Costello. Would like to see/hear your breakdown of those artists.

Indeed! I train like that, and always encourage my students to do this to help with breath support - it's a KILLER... However, when you train like that, means you are STRONGER for the stage! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment - appreciate you!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

This channel loves you right back! 😍 Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘😎🤘
Rock Your Best Vocals 😁😁😁
Are you using a little mix of falsetto in there? Sounds brilliant.
Hey Joe, nope - it's all 'head voice'/ 'mixed' really... it may sound that way because of how 'thin' it is... that's just my tone when I get up there, unless I consciously put some 'chest growl' into it, I have a rather 'thin' high register (kinda naturally like Sting maybe) thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! 🤘😎🤘
I'm always interested in taking more lessons (if you know Randy Rhodes Ozzy's guitar player used to take lessons from someone in every place they stopped on tour - THAT is dedication!) WE NEVER STOP LEARNING! Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘😎🤘
Rock Your Best Vocals wow, I was sure you were in the US! Thankfully I’ll be back getting lessons next week from Chris Currid, who is a great teacher and a great guy!
@@RockYourBestVocals do you use twang/metallic voice for "clean"?
If you are serious about singing and want to extend your range we could do a Zoom lesson - you can send an inquiry through my website rockyourbestvocals.com Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

Top Vid Top Jimmy!!! im never gonna get up to the Axl register. I end up singing UNDER. It gets a bit GRAM PARSONS =)
Hey Dan, thank you! You CAN get there, if you work at it... it's all about the compression (push from the abdomen and restrict air from coming out - JUST enough to let that Axl 'squeal' come out!) ;) Thanks for watching and commenting! 🤘😎🤘

Any tips

Please do a sing like Tim Armstrong from Rancid!
Thanks for the suggestion - I'm not familiar with him but checking some videos, like his vibe! Saw a video 2015 of him playing with Green Day at HOB Cleveland - so cool!!!
You sing it way better than people that are doing covers of it, damn, how long did it take you to be able to reach this level?
I can share more specific techniques for this if you want to book a 1:1 session - IF you’re serious about singing…and if you value preventing damage and pain 🤷🏼♂️
you said that the voice has to be behind the nasal cavity but i can't, my voice is in the back of my throat, do you have any tips to solve this?
I would suggest trying to 'hum' the lines (like you are making all the sound come out your nose), and slowly begin to articulate the phrases with the actual words... hope that helps!
cool
Welp. Guess I have no more excuse for not becomming a rockstar. Thanks for the guide ! I have the feeling I’m gonna come back a lot.
Awesome! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼 please do! Welcome aboard and thank you!
@@RockYourBestVocals wow, im amazed on how much that helped! I can't Thank you enough 😁👍
Please please cover John Fogerty, I feel like it's similar but somehow thicker and more resonant in a lower register?
Great suggestion - Fogerty is a LEGEND! COMING SOON! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Helped me out a lot when I joined a GnR tribute as a singer last year!
greetings from argentina!😁
Hey Enzo! Shout out to Argentina!!!! thanks for representing Argentina, think you're my first! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘😎🤘
Yes, exactly! if you are getting hoarse, you're blowing too much air out. Check out my "singing supports secrets" course (FREE) to help you with that.
I can't go high with normal voice I need to sing like this to get high note 😴
I don't get it. Isn't Axl using his clean upper-register chest voice in the studio version of Sweet Child O' Mine with a little rasp?
I have no trouble making the sound at all, but when i try and speak or sing in that voice it sounds super goofy, do you know how to help with this? Or should i just keep practicing? Great video btw.
Hey Hani appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment! Yes, when I started out I sounded WAY goofy, but you just keep practicing and you will eventually "Feel" that magic spot where it sounds good... when you get it, keep practicing that, and it will become 'muscle memory'! (main point is keep at it BELIEVING that you WILL EVENTUALLY GET IT!!!) 😊👍
@@RockYourBestVocals thanks a lot for replying, I'll keep practicing the techniques in this video.
Any tips on how we can find our own voice and be as natural and raw as possible?
Great video though!

Hey Ashton, wow never heard anyone ask for that before, but Vince had a killer voice on their EP so I may hit that one... Very interesting. I came here expecting to cringe like I usually do when someone sings like he does, but I kind of enjoyed this. I am curious if you can sing deep like him and do that sexy growl thing when he would sound kinda like a cat. That's what I am trying to find is a video on how he does that..one performance I have seen on you tube has a lot of it, and I am so intrigued. I wanna know how he does it.
when you have a guitarist as cool as slash, you don't need a singer. axl was just a bonus
Anybody can be a relatively good guitarist. Only very few people can find like Axl Rose... and not destroy themselves in ten minutes.

But

And in comments i saw guy who told that 'axl wasnt actually screaming and its only falsetto with body expression'

How you see this?
Axl was screaming this?
My knowledge about singing is small because i never had lessons or sth like this (only your channel, thank you :D)
(Sorry for asking again and sorry for my english im still learning)
Axl most certainly was NOT singing falsetto - you can see it in his body on live performances, he is pushing the notes... unless that was a recent performance they were commenting on. You CAN get some similar rasp with using a type of 'falsetto' but it's not EXACTLY a falsetto voice, but more of a 'modified falsetto' - that's because falsetto is typically very airy (a lot of breath pushed through the vocal chords). I hope this helps! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!!🤘😎🤘
@@RockYourBestVocals Thank you a looooot

axl sing like this later in his career, for example here: ua-cam.com/video/b5-JetB_z2U/v-deo.html
for example in 1987 he sing with rasp but not that weird sound, but its great,
axl sing very nasally right?
Thanks for sending that live in paris - actually he has quite an 'open throat' style (not necessarily nasally), but he pushes that 'raspy' sound out the top of the back of his nasal passage. The open-throat technique combined with too much air expelling caused a lot of damage to his voice, and he has lost range because of this abuse. see the video at 3:01 where he sings 'count your stars I'm home again' - you can hear the rounded open throat on 'count'....
