Lol no, I work in AML and it would be the most obvious, traceable, inefficient way to money launder. You're what, laundering at most £1000 per card leaving behind a massive paper trail? Criminals have far far better ways

Nah,they've all got their own brains ,they may agree with Peter but they don't just blindly follow whatever he does. There has been loads of times when he's gone out and other dragons have made offers or they've gone out and Peter has offered.
I believe Tuk Tuk Chai is the business Peter has referred to that is continuously losing money, but he’s still in, because he loves the product, the people involved are just great and the whole thing is fun for him. And I guess he stuck to his word and has been feeding money into it, despite the losses.
Rupesh and Alex Thomas appeared on Dragons' Den with Tuk Tuk Chai and secured a £100,000 investment from Peter Jones. But after the show, the couple turned the money down and went on to raise more than £275,000 through crowdfunding. They are now worth £3 m, and growing.

I think what Peter disliked was how misleading the guy was. He was trying to exaggerate how much business he was actually doing and that probably ticked off Peter Jones. The other Dragons were quite nice, but their point was more that he didn't really need the money, he could just save some money by not having a big office and renting vans while sticking to Scotland and get to his goal without any investment money. In the end it dissolved anyway so it was a bullet dodged all around.
2nd business plan, I'm surprised none of them brought up money laundering. A gift card broker would inherently be dealing with a load of fraudsters, drug dealers, etc.
Haven't heard a SINGLE thing about what businesses did with the second one, like this 'black market' thing was NEVER a problem! Gift cards are STILL going big!
Come on people, why are you including VAT in turnover! All figures must be exclusive of VAT (unless you don't get input tax on your expenses!). I'm amazed how ignorant of how VAT works these entrepreneurs are!
It's ripe for criminal exploitation. What ends up happening is people buy gift cards with stolen credit cards then turn around and sell them to sites like this to resell for much lower prices than the people with legitimate gift cards would reasonably sell them for. Gift cards that can be traced back through serial numbers (activated at point of sale) end up getting cancelled through creditor charge-backs when the fraud is detected. End result is only criminal sellers make money and legitimate buyers get scammed.
Just on Deborah’s advice to the first guy, “don’t push against investors”. Isn’t that what the entrepreneur is supposed to do to justify their business model? Deborah seems to think the dragons are untouchable and cant be argued with.

The gift card thing is weird to me. Was it cause of the country they’re in? People and sites buy and sell gift cards in the states. Legit businesses in strip malls open up for it
Yeah, the gift card one is very interesting to me because I owned a small business for about 20 years and I sold gift certificates. We had about 40% of those gift certificates go unused before their expiration date, which was about two years from the date of purchase. It was a big part of our annual profit. Free money for us! If people had started trading them and 100% of them were getting used, we wouldn’t have been happy about that and would have figured out how to put a stop to that, like by issuing gift certificates to people by name and not allowing transfer. I can only imagine how giant retailers would want to protect their bottom line somehow by keeping a certain percentage of gift cards unused each year.
What is tuk tuk chai worth? Today, he also owns a second home worth around £350,000 in Croydon, south London; his chai tea business Tuk Tuk Chai is worth around £2 million and he is considering taking on outside investors. He has also invested in other businesses, including a laundry factory in Kerala, India.Apr 20, 2018

In a way yes, but also hjaving a giftcard means more foot traffic, especially to a store that the holder may not have originally considered, and if they use it they may find that they really like said store and become a return customer. I felt this way with Adidas, I came in when I got a gift card but I found that it was one of the few stores to have shoes in my size and their pants were quite comfortable. Now I'm a repeat customer.
If you're able to remember to sell a gift card, you're able to remember to just spend it yourself. That's the central flaw they can't get around. They'd need someone who has a gift card, but does not want ANYTHING at the store they have...at which point the person would have to be willing to sell it for a significant loss, and it to be worth the effort, and not just throw away the probably 25-50 bucks. Like, I don't like Talbot's. But if I got a 50 dollar gift card there, I could go there and just get $50 worth of SOCKS. My mom might not like gamestop, but, she could keep it and then buy something for me or my brother for Christmas SOMEDAY. They've done psychological tests that, when people acquire a good, they hate trading it for equal value, and would much prefer DOUBLE said value.
That micro fitness guy got some great advice particularly from Deborah but he didnt have his listening ears on. Seemed to have an odd sense of entitlement to their money.
