  • Excuse the mobile phone camera footage for this week! It was finally cool enough for us to go for a walk down to the river, thought we'd show you the village and give you an idea of some of the property prices in this area.
    Plus a little update at the end of what we are doing with the barn and Lee's fish farm!

You are definity inspiring me to go back home one day and live a village life. Hope you enjoy your new different life, and good luck with this huge adventure.

    Oh the peace, oh the joy! ... I am moving over there from the UK. I am.buying a two bed with 2 acres, that has been really done up nice. They are selling cos they bought another property .. I am going out to see everything next month I am paying £15k and I think it's a brilliant deal as I am 66 and not diy at all. But it's has animal housing.. I never knew how easy it was to get over there. I don't know where you are but your area looks kove!y. The place I am going to has the goat heard and shepherds that walk through to the meadows.
    I hope you get the young families to come near you. Shame so many villages are nearly empty ... I want to adopt some stray dogs and give them a good ho me!

      Hello It is okay to go there I would advise you to be careful these Bulagrian are very friendly but there is motives behind the problem you will face is the language not many people speak English if you are in a rundown area most villages are rundown The only people in the village's are old and when they come from UK the whole ball game changes The village road are generally very bad lots of potholes when you are driving you have to watch the potholes most young Bulgarian have emigrating and all the village's are empty so you can buy these houses on your bank card the problem arises when you want to sell your property and then you are lamberd with it there are property's for £2000 all your problem will arrive when you to sell your property

    Thank you for the video guys, you are so lovely. Me and my English partner are living in Devon but bought a house in VT area and can’t wait t come out permanently. The wall with the notices is a very common thing to see, even in big cities. It’s not necessary religious but a notice that a certain person have passed away so everyone else knows, people put their notices on the 7th and 40th day of the passing when you would have people gathering to commemorate the dead person. A bit like the notices in the newspaper here in UK

      @ourderelictdream  3 роки тому +7

      That's a really great question and thank you for watching and enjoying our amateur videos! It's hard to help with your choice as we've never been to Portugal. Not going to lie, you can't get by here without Google translate or an official translator for all official business. Younger generation (40 and younger) speak English well to communicate, so restaurants and shops fine. As you can see from our video, local elders we cannot communicate with other than hand gestures, but they are so welcoming in the villages. Our decision to be here was simply price and nature..let us know if we can help with any other questions that might help with your decision xx

      Hello, sorry to jump in but this was our dilemma for 2 years - Bulgaria or Portugal. We knew Portugal well as we had family there for a long time and visited often. The reasons we choose Bulgaria was for the nature, wilderness, mountains, strong culture, 4 seasons, abundance of fresh water and the wildfires Portugal gets was a factor. Regarding the people, we find both are kind and welcoming. In our first week all the neighbours in the hamlet came over with beautiful fresh veg and people also came from the neighbouring village to say hello and bring gifts. We were also invited to family get togethers, couldn’t have wished for it any better, peoples kindness here is quite moving. We can get by with the language, people really appreciate the effort and gives them a good laugh sometimes too! We use a free app called mondly which has helped and watch Bulgarian nature programmes with subtitles. Anyway, hope this helps and all the best :)

    Разговора си води предимно за лешниците. Обяснява как да ги обелете и счупите. Добре е да ги оставите да изсъхнат след като ги наберете. Сигурно наоколо в гората е пълно с дървета, и можете да си наберете колкото искате. Идеални са през зимата пекани със сол, както и орехите. Също се слагат и в печени кексове. Съберете орехите от дървото и ги сложете в щайги да изсъхнат не в торби. Орехите могат да се ядат и зелени като се бели тънката ципа на ядката след като се счупи. Но пръстите ви ще станат тъмни поради високото съдържание на йод в зелената гора на орехите.

      The conversation is mainly about hazelnuts. Explains how to peel and break them. It is good to let them dry after picking them. Probably around the forest is full of trees, and you can pick as many as you want. Pecans with salt and walnuts are ideal in winter. They are also placed in baked cakes. Collect the walnuts from the tree and put them in crates to dry, not in bags. Walnuts can also be eaten green by peeling the thin skin of the nut after it breaks. But your fingers will become dark due to the high iodine content in the green walnut forest.

      I think that will be pretty hard to find here...back when people were getting their plots to build, rivers and streams are often the boundary, as owned by the government. I guess it would depend on what you're planning to do with the water and whether it would have a negative effect further down stream?

      This may not be the case nationwide, but in our immediate area, this seems to be the norm.

    I've been looking at Bulgarian properties on line for a while now. There seem to be almost no small rural properties; either buildings or land. Do such things exist? I wondered if maybe such properties if they did exist tended to be occupied and that most of those for sale were those that had proved too big for their elderly owners and had fallen into disrepair.
    I also wondered if some (or many) places housed multigenerational families as a lot of them seem to have beds in most rooms.
    Thanks for the video. It's interesting to see where you live. Those two gents seem like nice people. I wonder if they've lived there their whole lives.

      That's seems a shame, I'm sure there are still many to be had. Try looking at OLX.bg as that website is direct from owners as opposed to agents. Always a good idea to visit the areas and ask around..we know they are still out there! Plenty of options on properties that need a lot of work if you're open to that?!

      @@ourderelictdream The property I've seen which appeals to me most is a summer kitchen with a shower added. A young Bulgarian couple are living in it. The main house is uninhabitable, but I don't want a main house. I'm single in my 60's.

      @@ourderelictdream Thanks, but I'm the worlds worst procrastinator! Ideally I'd want to know for certain that I could stay for more than 3 months and in order to have the money to do that I'd have to sell my house here. I'd be more inclined to rent initially anyway.

    That was a lovely video. Thank you for putting that up.
    I’m currently looking at £5k buildings anywhere in the peaceful countryside of Bulgaria. So please do let me know if you know half decent ones. I thought about getting a cheap derelict one, knocking it down (with planning permission) and building one made out of straw-bales or sand/earth bags. I dream too much so I think it’s best to buy something small (with decent land) to get me started before starting from stretch...hahaha!!!
    I’ve been teaching in South Korea for the past nine years, and hoping to finish my last contract next summer, but don’t really want to go back to the UK.
    I’m definitely going to carry on teaching (as I love it), but online as it takes some much energy and preparation.
    Just wondering about the fish tank thing you mentioned at the end... is that like aquaponics?
    Also, where did you buy your DIY power tools from?
    Cheers!

      @ourderelictdream  3 роки тому +2

      You'll do great out here being able to continue with the teaching..though South Korea sounds amazing!! I think you'll find it hard for 5k now for anything liveable but further south or further north can be cheaper (we're pretty central). Dream away though, building your own sounds great! Lee is an aquarist and breeds fish for local pet aquarium trade and really wants to expand..we would love to introduce hydroponics as well for growing veg..one day!!
