Hey Neil, welcome to the channel mate. Thanks for the comments. Hope you watch some more and any questions, always ask as I build the videos around the stuff everyone asks. Hope you have a great weekend
@@Premier_lawns_official thanks Robbie you too! I have seen about 10 videos now. Seaweed on order! My garden / lawn is big. Some landscaped some more natural. Good to get some advise on that as I think it’s easy for people to treat any area of grass as lawn when it isn’t always the case. Like where you have large trees, avoid aeration around that area etc!
Missed your Vids Robbie. I never get tired of watching you on the lawns and the results. I forgot how good a job the wee home made drag mat does. Roll on the season.
Thanks for the video. I top dress and cover with fleece, prevents birds having fun, keeps the ground moist longer, and a slight increase in heat. Three years in a row using the same fleece, no need to throw away. Also helps when the wind picks up, the drying effect in less. 👍
I’ve got a scarifier that will allow me to change the drum type. I’ve got a dethatching one on at the moment but can change it to the one you’ve used. Which one is best to use? Thanks
Got my drag mat at Tractor supply in tne states. 29$ used some angle iron and some light weight chain for the handle and a piece of old house for the grip. Works great !
Hi Robbie what would you recommend if people only have a “cheep hand “ scarifier? Mine is getting a good load of moss n thatch out, but not great on putting lines in the soil before seeding. So would you say just try your best with the hand scarifier n ordinary rake for lines, or do you have any other tips?
@@Premier_lawns_official Thanks Robbie 👍 yes I have aerated , I’m a good student of your channel. I’m only just really getting into lawn care this year, but I already think it’s something I’m beginning to get obsessed about! You mentioned compost, is it ok to use my own home made stuff? It’s really broken down well as due to last years heat my bin wasn’t emptied last summer and I’ve sieved it also but it does seem to be slightly bigger particles than shop brought stuff.
Great videos as always Robbie, overseeded my front lawn wednesday(took your advice using same seed) and top dressed in westland top soil, hope last night's frost here in N Ireland didn't do any harm!!
Might be a stupid question (I’m clueless when it comes to gardening), I have quite a lot of weeds in my garden (mostly dandelions and weed grass), should I try to sort this out before doing everything in the video?
You can do weeds, or you can do seeds, you cant do both. My lawn has a few weeds, but I tend to ignore them and create the conditions the grass likes and it out grows them. It will depend on your own lawn
Hi Robbie, just done the same and used the new Landzie spreader, great piece of kit, but don’t have get through the bags. Did it a week ago, since then lots of rain and sun, the existing grass is growing and presumably the seed is going to take a good few weeks. What do I do about mowing? cos if I leave the grass for weeks it’s going to look like a field, but then if I mow, am I going to damage the new seed coming through, I really don’t know what to do? Thanks 🙂
Nice update on what is happening with your lawn. The landzie looks like the top dressing is easier. I heard the lawn police are coming round to you on violation of the 1/3 rule 😂😂😂 (there's always one)
I have basically followed these steps about 14 days ago and my seed hasn't germinated yet. Should I be worried? I did use fleece and located in the west of Scotland. Any advice would be appreciated
I always try and wait for heavy frost to pass. Although I have seen some frost here in Belfast in the last week It still might come, give it another week If it doesn't then you were to early.
Hi Robbie Enjoy your videos and even though I live in Tasmania Australia - so cool season, I look at what I can apply to my struggling lawn. In your latest viodeo I note you had help from Bella. How do you deal with her urine burns? Our little border terrier is doing a lot of damage. Appreciate any advice. Cheers Paul
@@Premier_lawns_official thank you! Just a quick question, I need to oveerseed, I've got a lot of thatch and debris on my lawn. This is what I'm thinking, any input would be appreciated. 1. Dethatch top layer using a sunjoe with the tine attachment 2. Scarify using sunjoe scarifying attachment 3. Aerate using manual aerator 4" plugs 4. Overseed using Scotts Quick and Thick seeds(has some sort of fertilizer with 12-0-0) 5. Use Scotts enriched top soil(0.08-0.03-0.02)Do i need to roll the top soil after? Or can I just rake it? Will raking move the seeds around? 6. Use Scotts starter fertilizer(24-25-4), do i do it immediately after overseeding, a few weeks before, or a few days after? People have said if you fertilize while overseeding same day it could burn seeds? 7. Water 3 times a day for 10 minutes morning, afternoon, evening for 2 weeks *Can I dethatch, scarify, and aerate the same day, or will lawn be overstressed? *Do i fertilize before, during, or after overseeding? *What do i do about weeds and pears on lawn, do i take care of it before or can I do it after or next year? How long should I wait? Thank you! Sorry for the long question
@@biguplater I'm that familiar with those products or tools so can't comment on that. Generally, all of that looks good though. I always apply the fertiliser last (on the same day) you could wait a day or so if it's your own lawn though Watering during the day should be avoided as you will lose a lot of water from the sun... Apart from that I think your plan looks good
Excellent information as usual Robbie followed your directions doing this to the letter down in Lurgan, while I’ve used plenty of seed and covered with top soil Im not too optimistic as the birds are never away from it lol next step is camping out the front for a month 😂
Your lawn care videos are second to none and I really enjoy them, but I had to smile 7:30 in where I see you walking backwards..... now it may well be that the spreader is easier to pull when full(er) rather than push, but pushing I suspect is a slightly more natural, ergonomic way "to drive". Won't the arm of the Landzie flip over to the other side of the drum so you can pretty much always push (if indeed that's ones preference) ? Thanks for the weed free topsoil tip - one to look out for.
People get so hung up on before or after, in my experience, it doesn't matter. If you were hiring the tools, do the aeration after but really it doesn't matter one way or the other :)
@@bodiddley1882 haha no, its hard to get rid of them now. The chanmical control has all changed, turfsolve is meant to be an ok solution (google it) another way is to soak the lawn, really properly soak it and cover it overnight in black plastic and sweat them out, then brush the up in the morning
I'm looking to do the same, mow short, scarify twice, mow to pickup thatch and moss, aerate, scatter seed with handheld device but I'm not sure how to apply compost. I'm tempted to put compost down first before applying seed, spread it out with a garden broom, apply seed, then maybe throw some compost on top and step on it to ensure good seed to soil contact but try to not kick around the soil which would move the seeds? Not sure how else to do it, any thoughts?
it depends on how thick the compost is, a thin layer over the top works really well. If the soil is going to be deep then do it afterwards and mat it in
Whats your thoughts on worm casting compost I got a few 20kg bags cheap off amazon last season and used it as top dressing after scarification at the end of last summer and the grass seems alot better than normal for this time of year or is it just a coincidence ???or is copying what you do starting to pay off 😊🎉❤
Hi Glenn. All I would add is that how you composted the material might make a difference. I once composted in a small bin that didn’t get hot enough to kill the weed seeds, so I had the seedlings grow in the place I had top dressed. If you compost on a larger scale it will get hot enough. The stuff Robbie used was heat treated to kill weed seeds. After that I was more careful about what went into the compost bin!
@@neilfarmer6609 yes I know it's a big consideration. I'm not too worried about weeds, I can use a spot on. It's annual meadow grass and other weed grass that I don't want to be spreading. I use dalek type composters and they do get hot, but not sure whether it's enough to kill the seed?? Any advice on heat treating your own compost to kill all weeds 😂😂
