    I don't get why so many people hate Kuwabara. For those who said because he was weak : Yes he may be weak but that is not what makes him great, what makes him great is his Honor Code, Pride, Determenation and the will to do not give up.
    for thos who says his voice doesn't fit his age : The Voice actually fits him and you don't understand true emotion and acting means.

      @Many Doors, Ed Boy
      Nope. Surprisingly it never happened.
      After Genkai used the tournament to find a successor, Kuwabara was never chosen but trained on his own to create the spirit sword. During the lead up to the dark tournament, Hiei and Kurama (mostly Kurama) trained him to be a better fighter and utilized his spirit energy better. During the third arc, his powers went away for a bit only to come back stronger than ever, and during said time not once did he spend any time with Genkai, and during season 4, he spent all his time learning at school and worked towards his education.
      Genkai has never taught Kuwabara ANYTHING. everything he learns, he earned by himself.

    Kuwabara talks a big game but it's all to compensate for his inferiority. Kuwabara's inferiority complex comes to a head in the Dark Tournament. 'I thought that we were a team, but I guess I'm just one big joke to you all, aren't I...'
    Kuwabara feels very real. There's actual insecurities behind him and he deals with them in a real way. This isn't some excessively traumatic backstory that most anime relies on. This is a real dude with real issues. It's why I love YYH. Kuwabara and Yusuke both are some of the realest characters in the medium deapite their powers. They read like actual human beings. Very rare for anime.

    • @Azelleus
      @Azelleus 4 роки тому +8

      I think that quote is used out of context. I don't think of it as an inferiority complex as much as that was literally how he was treated by us the viewers and by the team at times and was reflected in that moment. I think Kuwabara thinks well of himself but he doesn't come across as skilled to the average person, despite the fact he really is skilled, and honestly his dimensional sword power is very Protag ability.

    Kuwabara is the only one who truly respected and understood Yusuke right from the start. He was the most distraught at the funeral. Seeing him fight academically and letting himself get beat up for the sake of his friends caused Yusuke to respect Kuwabara back. Because of this, I would call Kuwabara the most important person in Yusuke's life and their friendship subtly shaped the series.
    Kuwabara is the character who never forgot where he came from and made sure to be there for his "normal" friends as well. In other series, it works be so easy for them to be forgotten.

    Yusuke is awesome but Kuwabara was AMAZING. One of the driving motivations for me was to see what Kuwabara might do this time and how he might grow. Yusuke is definitely one of my favorite main characters, but Kuwabara is so underrated and underappreciated. Great vid. For me, Kuwabara is a character I had to learn to like, as he's always 2nd to Yusuke and plays the fool up until Season 3. It was his development during that season (he was supposed to take over as main character after Yusuke died against Sensui, It's part of the reason why he developed the Dimension Blade) that really made me see what Kuwabara is- he's an old school Samurai reimagined as a 90s punk.
    I also love that he matured over seasons 3 and 4, to the point that in the final ep, he can admit that he's no longer that punk kid that doesn't know his own strength. He reminds me of the athlete that is at peace with the fact that his career is over, It's a rare insight to have, to willingly accept that others have passed you by, esp since Kuwa is very competitive and always trying to prove himself to those stronger than him.

    Kuwabara is my favourite character from YYH. He may not be as strong as his other teammates, but when the chips are down, he'll come through for them and sticks to his own set of morals all the while. This is the same man that carried his three unconcious friends and the person that hurt them all to safety while he was also injured. He isn't a dumb person either, despite what some people think; he shows a great amount of resourcefulness and thoughtfulness in the show.

      Kuwabara by the end of the series could one shot the entire cast due to his dimension sword being able to cut through anything. Notice in the 3 on 1 fight with Sensui, the dimension sword was the only attack that Sensui had to dodge. The only thing Kuwabara was lacking at that point was proper swordsmanship. Teach him refined sword technique, and he'd be the most overpowered character in the series.

    This is my favorite series by far and is one of the greatest dubs of all time. I honestly feel that the dialog is what makes this show, what it is. These are young punk kids and with the dialog that matches. They respond to things the way that you or I might respond to things. What they are mixed up in is a lot more grand then what we'll ever find ourselves mixed up in but their reactions are more natural and grounded to something a real person would say or do...not an anime protagonist.
    We also get to see the character's weaknesses, insecurities, emotional baggage, and the walls they put up. It blows my mind how well done basically everything was in this show and really stands out from other shows that are in it's same genera.

    + Yusuke: Rebel and leader-in-the-making that tells the status-quo to shove it.
    + Hiei: Vengeful, cutthroat cactus boy on a path of self-destruction.
    + Kuruma: Fractured intellectual working to repent for his past and finally discover who he is.
    + Kuwabara: A compassionate hero with an unshakable sense of morality whose identity is constantly challenged but remains steadfast.
    Each member of Team Urameshi aids the others in their own way, and needed to be there to accomplish everything they did.

    My problem with how Kuwabara's story resolved is that he was never given a chance to excel. Yes, he DIDN'T belong in the Three Kings tournament, but they didn't even let him come as a friend to watch!
    But I see Kuwabara the fighter as pure wasted potential, because no one ever trained him. Everything he became, he did on his own, which is damned impressive.... but also disheartening, because no one gave him a chance to really make something of him.
    He was treated as a gag character in many ways, which was unfair because if he were trained, I honestly believe he'd hold his own with all of them.
    Go back to the Genkai arc, and you have this street-punk kid accidently enter a tournament, were he developed powers and left everyone... Genkai, Yuuske, and Koenma all blown away. He seemed to have AMAZING potential. And with no demon heritage, no death and re-incarnation to connect him closer to his spirit, or even knowing about energy and manipulating it before that tournament, he managed to make his sword and show what he could do.
    The Saint Beasts? He fought them with nothing but the training he did on his own. Saving Yukina? Same thing. Sure, Kurama spared with him some and taught him some for 2 months, but that was it. That, outside of battle experience, was the sheer limit of the training he ever received. Even the demons they became friendly with during the Dark Tournament all got trained by Genkai. Kuwabara was allowed to fall back into normal life, until Sensui. After that point, when he was able to fight again, he was able to stay toe-to-toe with Hiei and Kurama through that fight. The weakest, sure, but not by some incredible amount.
    Seeing him find a place, as a teen, in human life, and in school? Yes, it was emotionally touching. But I can't help but feel like he was left behind by people who thought he couldn't keep up, when he was never given an honest chance TO keep up, and managed to on sheer willpower.
    I wonder what would have happened if somehow, in a "what if" scenario, he beat Rando... or Yuuske still did but Genkai saw Kuwabara's progress and his and Yuuske's friendship and rivalry, and choose to train both. Imagine what Kuwabara could have been in The Dark Tournament, if he had been trained by Genkai! Hell, with Kuwabara as direct compatition, imagine what more Yuuske could have been, and how much more seriously he may have taken her training, if he had Kuwabara with him.
    I like the "underdog" character. The one who is human, relatable. the joke of the group... and more damned powerful than given credit for. But while they USUALLY get some time to shine in a "mid boss" fight, their ability to come through despite impossible odds is still barely given lip-service, and just to return to a status quo, they are usually brought down 2 to 10 pegs shortly after.
    You see it with Kuwabara, with Chad in Bleach, and with Krillin. Characters that deserve respect, but get sidelined, mocked, or just can't keep up. It's disheartening.
    I think that Kuwabara would have been a more impactful character if he did the rarest of things in this style of anime, and truly sacrifice himself and stay dead, with the specter of that never being forgotten or moved on from....
    or, less viscerally compelling but more fitting with the show, ended by not just improving with school, but also training with Genkai in "peace times," making jokes with them all about how when they're back from their "vacation in spirit world," he'll have some vast improvements to show off.
    It is obvious to anyone who loves this series what a pivotal and powerful character he is... but is it agonizing that it never seems to be respected in-universe.

    I LOVE Kuwabara as a character, he's without a doubt the best part of the series to me. That said, I disagree with your stance on his character progression ending perfectly. I actually think it could've been handled A LOT better. Imo, Kuwabara should've been promoted to acting Spirit Detective, even if only temporarily, by Koenma during the Three Kings arc. This could've given us far more content and development with regards to his character, and expanding on his sole connection to the Human world, as it did Yusuke, Kurama, and Hiei's to Demon world during said arc. Having him instead settle for being some bookworm was lazy to me.
    He also, at the very least, deserved his own bout of training under Genkai. It has never made any sense to me that out of all the main four characters, he was the only one to receive no specialized training. Whereas even minor characters like Chu, Rinku, Jin & Touya were actually able to train under her, despite the fact each of them already had specialized training under other masters previously. Yet a guy who possesses a weapon as unique and dangerous as the Dimension sword, and who has been such an integral part of the story, receives no training and is instead just allowed to go study algebra???

    • @dannygillmusic
      @dannygillmusic 4 роки тому +3

      Crimson Titan I agree 1000%! As I was watching the series I was thinking “ok when is kuwabara gonna train under Genkai???”
      I also think that making him active spirit detective would have been perfect as that would have pitted all of them on different sides of the demon world war. I wish that they wouldn’t have ended it with a tournament as that kind of felt like a cop out. Each season up until then was a completely new challenge for the team and the last season should have been something new besides a tournament.
      Also he and Yukina never technically get together which is lame

    • @Imperia1Wrath
      @Imperia1Wrath 4 роки тому

      @@dannygillmusic Yes, you're absolutely right, and that was part of my reason for suggesting his becoming the next Spirit Detective, putting squarely in a position where he HAS to become strong enough to be able to defend Human world from whatever fallout happens from the war in Demon world. Hell, it could've been Kuwabara who discovered in that position, that Enma/Yama had been dealing with Demon world leaders under the table.
      And while I do understand he and Yukina not getting together during that arc, I definitely think they could've and should've hooked up by the end of the series. As I think that would've given Yukina enough time to learn more about basic Human culture, especially since we see her living with him and his family by that point.

    Feeling nostalgic, i started rewatching the show and made my own video on instagram live about kuwabara. It irked me when people gave kuwabara shit for not showing up for the makai tournament, but my counter-argument is that he wouldnt need to. He is THE MOST developed character in the entire show. Him deciding to go finish school was a fitting end to his arc, which gave time to focus more on hiei and kurama (which is whole point of the arc). It was also natural that sensui was after kuwabara instead of yusuke because kuwabara already had a natural talant for psychic awareness well before yusuke died, and while yusuke still struggles to use the most basic spirit attack for up to 4 times a day, kuwabara's first battle against a psychic and/or demon, he already developed the ability to create a spirit weapon construct (which genkai herself stated was an extremely difficult technique), and while yusuke needed weeks of koenma and genkai busting his ass to learn shotgun, kuwabara learned to summon his sword at will, as well as change its length and shape completely on his own. Kuwabara might not win every fight, but he always manages to turn the tables with creative tactics and grit (and its fair to say he could be a college professor if he applied those characteristics in academics). And getting back to seaman. Kuwabara was well within his right to finish him off for attempting to kill his friends. But instead, kuwabara gave him a chance to redeem himself. He defeated younger toguro at 10% (which is still a big feat, since he is the equivelent of the highest B-class demon) and completely defeated older toguro.

    The siblings aspect is so fascinating- with Kazuma and Shizuru, the latter is harsh with him, but both are close; Yukina and Hiei are apart most of the time with the latter acting aloof, but he ultimately cares deeply for his sister as does she; ironically, the Toguro Brothers who were so close that one is literally on the shoulder of the other almost his entire screen time as well as sharing the same time aside from age difference- have no close bonds aside from being around due to familial blood ties and the Younger barely tolerating the Elder due to the latter's sadism and depravity being too much for the bloodthirsty, but mostly honorable Toguro to tolerate.

    This was a fun watch, Yu Yu Hakusho was something special for me as well. The series started airing around the time I was getting into high school, what really set it apart from its contemporaries at the time (and even now) was just how real the characters felt, and the fact that at no time were their established characters compromised or overly exaggerated for the sake of the story but rather was worked on within the story made the situations they were in seem less forced and far more natural than anything else, even to this day. I liked this video and would like to see you expanding your reach even more.
    In this time of people latching onto poorly worked stories just because they appear nice we need to bring more focus to the ones that do it right, like Yu Yu Hakusho. Yu Yu Hakusho is a Shounen anime, and quite frankly one of the best examples of how to do a series right within that genre. Another series that does an excellent job, within different genre is Log Horizon. Log Horizon is a Trapped in an MMO genre show, and while most series within the genre do a terrible job of portraying this (Sword Art Online and the .Hack franchise being the two best known examples of this) Log Horizon remembers what it means to be an MMO. The series focuses on more than one individual or group, sometimes jumping between several seemingly unrelated groups in the span of single episode, to show just how expansive the world of the game is. While we were told in season 1 that the game was one that was played globally we mainly focus on players on the Japanese server net, going so far as not really seeing the global scale of things until a good ways into season 2. But what really makes it work is that none of the characters are shown to be super players that are basically Jesus or some god within the game, the limits and abilities of the class (and to a lesser extent race) are put on full display for everyone to see. The reason for all that ranting about Log Horizon, I would appreciate you watching it if you already haven't and do one or more analysis videos on it.

I just wish that there had been even more to Yu Yu Hakusho after the Three Kings Arc, and during that Arc, Kuwabara is found by a master swordsman with immense power, who takes Kuwabara as his pupil. Basically, what I would have loved to have seen, Hiei is fighting a baddie, and losing. Thene Kuwabara comes in, Hiei is like "Fool! You can't beat him!" But Kuwabara goes toe to toe with the baddie..and wins. True, what made Kuwabara great was his personality and such, but that would have been awesome had that happened.
