"Because a mulberry is a tree and Kuwabara is a man" - Kazuma Kuwabara. Yep, makes total sense. And Yoshihiro Togashi made this series due to his interest in the occult and supernatural so anything dealing with ghosts, even names, was all due to that
As a Filipino who watched this anime here in the Philippines, which is known as "Ghost Fighter" by the way,I have to admit hating the translation and the way the characters were portrayed. They erred in the gender of Genkai and Youko Kurama and,if my memory serves me right, the spirit sword was dubbed "laser sword" in some episodes probably because it coincides with the GMA Network's airing of Voltes Five (Borutesu Faibu) during friday nights. Not only did the network botched the translation, they even "dissected" every episode in order to prolong it... meaning that a single episode took two days to finish. The said TV network also made a re-runs of this anime for too many times than any other anime that they licensed.
I have more facts 1. For the Funimation dub, The voice actress for Genkai, Linda Young is the mother of fellow voice actor John Burgmeier who is the voice of Kurama. 2. Yusuke and Kuwabara bare a resemblance to the videogame characters Kunio and Riki who we know as Alex and Ryan from River City Ransom. 3. Each of the four main characters share a trait with their Saint beats counterparts. 1 Kurama has wisdom and knowledge like a tortoise. 2. Kuwabara has bravery and determination like a tiger. 3. Hiei is calm and deadly like a dragon (plus he literally has a dragon based attack). 4. Yusuke has fiery passion comes back stronger after death like a Phoenix and his energy even took the form of one. 4. Yusuke has similarties to Goku from Dragonball Z, aside from being main characters, both have been killed and resurrected. 5. Three of the members of Team Uraotogi are based on three of Japan's fairytales Kintaro the golden boy, Momotaro the peach boy and Urashimataro the Fisherman. The other member Shishiwakamaru is based on the legendary Benkei.

Yeah and I'm a filipino and yeah I grew up knowing them as Eugine, Denis, Vincent, and Alfred .. and also the Japanese terms of the names. I was just happy of both names. 😊
in defense of the Filipino dub, a lot of people actually liked the names. they sounded more "common people" which were the audience at that time it was aired on TV
Nothing ridiculous about the Yu Yu Hakusho Tagalog/Filipino dub. They changed the name to make us Filipinos recognize the characters better. And the title, as it is named "Ghost Fighter" instead. They stopped doing it now, if that calms you down.
Kinda pisses me off that he's critizing the way they we named those characters while he can't pronounce Keiko correctly. Kinda ironic to say the least as well.
Yu yu hakusho is begging to be continued avatar style with the next spirit detective. Yusuke and the cast could have small parts mentoring the new detective. Unfortunately I don't think it will ever happen. Although, it could be sweet.
As a Filipino, I'm very embarrassed about the renaming of characters and misgendering of Kurama, Koenma, and Genkai. For the renaming, it was an old ‘tradition’. Be it anime, dramas, movies... anything that has non-English name, for some reason they would change the names into English names. For Filipino fans who were introduced to anime through the Filipino dubbed versions, it was a pain to get more information about the characters. They probably thought people weren't ready for non-English names back then since Voltes V characters (the most popular anime in the Phils at the time) had English names. But knowing the country the media came from could've easily explained the unfamiliar names, especially since they would've stood out in the Fil-English dub.
I might sound stupid but yusuke reminds me of myself * both have the same hair * I used to be a punk * same height * same build (muscles) * and I used to skip school a lot only thing is my eyes are blue and I don't grease my hair back often
You know. As much as the Western Anime community throws shade onto the Filipino dubs for Yu Yu Hakusho belovedly known as "Ghost Fighter" in the Philippines, it was shown on free TV back in the 90's and introduced Anime to a whole new audience and generation. Hell, I'm one of them. It may sound pretty dumb for westerners to rename Japanese characters into English names but it is actually a common thing to do on Filipino dubbing back then since some of the Japanese names can be hard to pronounce for us Filipinos especially kids. Nowadays, it is not done as often. Naruto is still named as Naruto in its run in the PH. Not Jerry, Kevin or whatever. Lol.
In 1994, they did the same thing for "Magic Knight Rayearth" when it is released and broadcast in ABS-CBN channel 2 in the Philippines. They also altered the names of three main characters in the series like Hikaru is Lucy, Umi is Marina and Fuu is Anne. 7 years later, The series got transferred and rebroadcast to its competitor GMA 7, they keep the Japanese names of the three main characters instead of English names presumably due to the criticisms they've received. Since then, Japanese names are used whenever they run an anime on Philippine TV.
ghost fighter will forever be my favorite anime and i watched it countless times (i recorded the whole thing on vcr) and i used to watch it on gma7 replays just to boost ratings. but anyways, i'm re-watching it now with eng dub and i'ts a whole new experience. it makes more sense (translation wise) and the tagalog dub doesn't come close to the original (langit at lupa) so fellow pinoys, if you have time and you like ghost fighter, go watch an eng sub or dub. it's waaay better than the version we're used to.
6:57 Yeah I noticed that too. There were three instances where we thought he did. Byakko survived him twice and ended up being killed by his own comrade Seiryu. The Toguro Brothers threw the fight against him and Yusuke. Elder Toguro threw the fight against him just like the other time.
Changing japanese names into english for children in english speaking countries isn't ridiculous as you pointed out.. Maybe it would annoy Original fanboys, but it's not weird at all.. I mean look at freakin POKEMON, and Sailormoon. There's a reason why companies do that in the 90's.
hi from the philippines. to follow up on #8.... keiko is jenny =) and also, we dont look to yu yu hakusho as a joke. we LOVE the show. changing the name into what it originaly was to make more relatable for the audience. as some of the names were difficult to pronounce. thus changing it to a common name was easier to remember. yu yu hakusho was the most famous anime in the philippines back then, and have been reshown from start to finish (daily) 6x or maybe more on a tv network.
My favorite Shounin Anime is YHH and yes, i'm a Filipino who grow up knowing Yusuke as Eugene. I'm too young then and poor to have internet or manga of YYH. But changing their names wasn't that bad but the censorship and the fact that they change some important parts like Genkai Toguro's relationship and alot more.
Um... going to have to argue with you there on the bit about the Dark Tournament fighters. At the start of Chapter Black, Koenma makes it clear that the Younger Toguro brother (and therefore likely vicariously his older brother) were at the top of B class. They were ungodly powerful (at the time), and were known as the toughest, strongest fighters around. For the six of them to lose to Urameshi before he got Genkai's powers or to Kuwabara is highly unlikely. At the time of the Dark Tournament, it is more likely that those six fighters (Toya, Jin, RInku, Chu, Shishi, and Suzuka) were at the higher levels of C class, maybe even the bottom rung of B class. But A class doesn't seem likely. I do agree, however, that by the end of their year long training with Genkai they likely made it to the lower reaches of S class. The reason I say lower is because none of them even made it to the second round of the Demon World Tournament (other than possibly Rinku as we never see how his fight with the lady from group 7 went).
i grow up watching this anime and the name of character DUBBED from Philippines was BEST!!!!!!! period... putcha!!!!.... ang mag react sa comment ko tang @#!!!! papapa bogbog ko ki taguro....
I actually liked the names used in Philippines. The one that messed up was Kurama and Genkai's gender switching. I love how they named Genkai as Master Jeremiah it suits her tough personality.
I did the same thing. But eventually I was talked into watching more. you should keep going. It's one of those anime's that gets better the further you get into it.
Actually, the Filipino dub is just epic and hilarious. No wonder it has a huge following in the Philippines. In the Phils, the title of this anime is "Ghost Fighter".
Hold up, if in Yu Yu Hakusho, Spirit World is a thing, and not any kind of Christian afterlife, why would Boton even celebrate Christmas? Maybe freakin' Koenmas, but still! Maybe she just likes the holiday.
Christmas is celebrated in Japan as a commercial holiday, not as a deeply religious one. They never say which religion(s) exist, so it could be that Christmas is simply her favorite human holiday.
Kurama was called Dennis? it makes sense, An Intellent, reserved, pretty boy with a thing for plants? yep mr stealyogirl. As Krampus would sing. Dennis! That DAMN DENNIS!!!!!
I'm a Filipino and I agree they messed up with the dubbing real bad, left out most beautiful lines unsaid, I'm really disappointed especially how they did the conversation between my favorites Genkai and Toguro

This was such a awesome show, the GBA game was so good too. Anyone ever play it??
I love Yu Yu Hakusho! Great video.
OMG my name is Alfred....Wow they gave Kurama that name....I'm so honored since I was born before the show lol
This is still really good
Hiei is an s class Deamon!!!!
I enjoyed a lot. I subscribe! I want more.
Lol.
ihatecalamares That's what I try to tell North Americans when they complain about the Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura English dubs.
Holy gender blenders Batman!!!
Yu yu hakusho is my favorite anime/manga
Changing japanese names into english for children in english speaking countries isn't ridiculous as you pointed out.. Maybe it would annoy Original fanboys, but it's not weird at all.. I mean look at freakin POKEMON, and Sailormoon. There's a reason why companies do that in the 90's.
hi from the philippines.
to follow up on #8....
keiko is jenny =)
and also, we dont look to yu yu hakusho as a joke. we LOVE the show. changing the name into what it originaly was to make more relatable for the audience. as some of the names were difficult to pronounce. thus changing it to a common name was easier to remember.
yu yu hakusho was the most famous anime in the philippines back then, and have been reshown from start to finish (daily) 6x or maybe more on a tv network.
loved this! thanks!!!!
I miss this anime
Nice Video Man!
My favorite Shounin Anime is YHH and yes, i'm a Filipino who grow up knowing Yusuke as Eugene. I'm too young then and poor to have internet or manga of YYH. But changing their names wasn't that bad but the censorship and the fact that they change some important parts like Genkai Toguro's relationship and alot more.
love this video XD
I want more yu yu hakusho facts :3
50 is too short xD
Yes. There are not enough people who talk about Yu Yu Hakusho :D
Kuwabara was able to detect Yusuke's presence early in the series and his elder sister could see Koenma during the viewing of his tape.
Um... going to have to argue with you there on the bit about the Dark Tournament fighters.
Exactly my thought.
Love this anime! Im re watching it now and would love them to continue the series.
I also hope so ❤best anime ever
Best anime ever I also wish they carry on ❤
i grow up watching this anime and the name of character DUBBED from Philippines was BEST!!!!!!! period... putcha!!!!.... ang mag react sa comment ko tang @#!!!! papapa bogbog ko ki taguro....
Kuya wag naman actually kuya nauna ko po panoorin yung tagalog tapos sa netflix english
thank you for putting up my favorite childhood anime
Kikio? Oh Jesus what did he do to you, Keiko?
I loved this anime with all my heart great childhood
The dub censorship only applies to the toonami airings and even then they slipped on the cuss words. The DVD and blu rays are fully uncensored.
Favorite anime of all time!!!
Lol @ 6:44 She's Keiko, not Kikyou from Inuyasha hahaha
I actually liked the names used in Philippines. The one that messed up was Kurama and Genkai's gender switching. I love how they named Genkai as Master Jeremiah it suits her tough personality.
Do a Hunter x Hunter!!!!!!!!!!! XD
Do Hunter x Hunter
Hunter X Hunter
+Ranger_Bunns do it
i watched part of the first episode and didnt like it at all...
I did the same thing. But eventually I was talked into watching more. you should keep going. It's one of those anime's that gets better the further you get into it.
YES!!! Thank you for this!!
wow u did not notice Tuxedo Mask in the world tournament
Togashi-san had to throw it in...after all, his wife created Sailor Moon
Nice video man
I just finished all 4 seasons and now I feel empty inside 😐😐
Ive watched this anime back to back for years and still watching it now.. best anime ever
Actually, the Filipino dub is just epic and hilarious. No wonder it has a huge following in the Philippines. In the Phils, the title of this anime is "Ghost Fighter".
How dare you
@Is Jai A Gamer? Lol. I'm a Filipino.
4:39 when you said this, I thought of his quote "A mulberry is a tree, Kuwabara is a man"
Hold up, if in Yu Yu Hakusho, Spirit World is a thing, and not any kind of Christian afterlife, why would Boton even celebrate Christmas? Maybe freakin' Koenmas, but still! Maybe she just likes the holiday.
Christmas is celebrated in Japan as a commercial holiday, not as a deeply religious one. They never say which religion(s) exist, so it could be that Christmas is simply her favorite human holiday.
Lol number 25 that super sayan :DDD(on the screen beetwen facts)
8:30 Goku SSJ3!!!!
Wow, i don't know how long I've been trying to remember the name of this show, years, and it just pops in my feeds now
Kurama was called Dennis? it makes sense, An Intellent, reserved, pretty boy with a thing for plants? yep mr stealyogirl. As Krampus would sing. Dennis! That DAMN DENNIS!!!!!
More people need to watch this amazing anime
Eureka seven please it's the best anime of all time
Angel Parra I freaking love that anime.
Beezzyy someone’s mad
Eugene! Vincent ! Alfred and Dennis hahahah
Who else watched this in 2016?
I'm a Filipino and I agree they messed up with the dubbing real bad, left out most beautiful lines unsaid, I'm really disappointed especially how they did the conversation between my favorites Genkai and Toguro
