As a Black woman, I was recruited to the University of North Dakota. While a student there, I often went with others to the Twin Cities to recruit prospective new Black students. This was during the early 1970s though. I am sad to say that the violence came to the Twin Cities when many were brought in from African countries. When so many of them moved to the cities, so did many Black Americans from cities such as Chicago. We had never had a shooting in Grand Forks either until the churches brought in many from Africa. Many of the African people did well in the area. Many took advantage of better jobs and higher education, however, others have now messed up the Twin Cities..

As a Minnesotan myself, I tend to avoid the twin cities because they just make me nervous with the driving alone at times (I’m not really a city folk kinda person), but I genuinely didn’t know anything about this.
I grew up on the southside, across the street from Powderhorn Park. I haven’t been over there since Floyd. Pretty sad what the old neighborhood has become.
I grew up over northside from 2004-2015, and live just outside of there nowadays and am over there daily. If you mind your business over north, barely anyone will bother you. Most shit that happens is within people that know each other and grow up in that lifestyle. If you ain’t from here, you wouldn’t really even know it’s the hood compared to south side Chicago, Memphis, st Louis, etc. its all big Victorian style homes that have been converted into duplex’s and triplexes, lined by big trees and clean side streets. Gangs up here keep it pretty quite and secluded. If you take west broadway 1 mile down the road from lyndale, you’d be in the white yuppie northeast neighborhood with a low crime rate. You go 10 mins outside of northside and houses are 350-500k. Drug overdoses on the other hand.. have been wild. That shit needs to be solved somehow.
I live over north and reading most of the comments on this video are so cringe. You really wouldn't know there's crime here bc unless you're involved in that lifestyle, it's no more dangerous than anywhere else
I used to work at the ACE check cashing place 2 doors down from that Boost Mobile when I was in college. I always worked by myself for the most part. I was new to MN and lived in upper Brooklyn Park. That's a lie Keith Ellison's office mainly deals with consumer fraud. They only deal with special criminal cases mainly high profile cases. Mary Moriarty is the blame in Hennepin County. Do some research before you spout falsehoods..
It's crazy coming across this and remembering some of the news headlines. I used to work at Target Field and it got worse every year, it's absolutely abhorrent what has been going on in the cities.
I remember in a very quiet yet still pretty large city in Canada, a very large gang war was going on for about 5 years, 25 murders not a single one solved.. that is until an innocent bystander got killled all of a sudden practically all the players on one side of the war got busted. Its amazing the things that can happen once you take shit out the hood
Oh and I forgot to add, the side that got taken out was the side that was sloppy and kept getting innocent people chilled. Coincidence or not, 20-25 years later that one side that crashed out stayed crashed out while the other side multiplied and multiplied but you never hear shit one the news unless they start killing too much again. Why would they fuck up their money like that, and of course. Not just talking about the gangsters....
The crazy thing is is that this all started back in the 80’s-90’s when MN started the low income/ public services many people came from Chicago and this is what we have, these people are from Chicago. People beefin over blocks that they don’t even own any properties on. This is a harsh reality in our communities.
@@Steve-ev6vx wouldn't know I've never lived in either. Idaho is pretty but Wyoming is as well. Do you like mountains or plains? Wyoming is pretty wide open and idaho has beautiful mountains

You know what they mean dummy. Even gangs call people outside the gangs something else. Like in Chicago, they call regular people neutrons. It matters more when you hurt or kill someone out of the lifestyle. Plenty of gang members have gone to the military and real wars too. Maybe you've never paid attention or read a single damn article about it. Plenty were in Afghanistan and Iraq, even tagging affiliations there. Wake the F up.
Activist groups have been addressing this for generations. Just doesn't get the publicity l, because of how undervalued Black lives are. Also, this nation loves it's authoritarian law enforcement apparatus so much, mainly because it murders Black folk with impunity and keeps the NIMBYs with a sense of security from things that would never impact them in a thousand years. *Edit to Add:* So that's why they lose their minds when we call them out, and anti-cop violence activists have more of a spotlight on them.
This is what you get when there's no fathers at home! We have a whole new generation of "baby daddies" but no fathers. It hurts when you hear him say the Mothers are often the biggest victims and yet you DON'T hear him say the Mothers AND FATHERS! Over 90% of people incarcerated on serious crimes come from homes with no father or father figure. I can't help but to speculate that this culture shift is by design. Perhaps by the same people who put an overwhelmingly number of abortion clinics in poorer neighborhoods. We need to do better. We need to train these young men up to be MEN and not desert their children. Get off the street and go home. Find a job and not a "hustle".
I am sick and tired of what a dumpster fire all of Minneapolis has become over the past 30 plus years! I lived on the North side for over 9 years and we moved to Brooklyn Park because in 1987 it was starting to get bad.
Minneapolis resident here, majority of the city feels safe to walk around and generally has a good reputation, I think you’ve overblown the idea of a lawless city going to shit lol. I’m happy here.
Excellent piece as always. For what it's worth, Minneapolis overall has a very low crime rate. Murders per capita are 5.4/100,000 compared to a median homicide rate of 8.4/100,000 for the largest 100 U.S. cities. The 10 worst cities in the U.S. for murders per capita are all over 25/100,000.
I live in the Hood in stl, it's a lil over 50 murders per 100,000. Those numbers sound like paradise. My 63 yr old neighbor got shot to death last week and I heard it happen while taking out the trash.
That’s true, but in the context of Minnesota it’s by far and away the most violent place. To be expected since it’s a big city, but yes it’s not like Chicago, Oakland, NLO, Baltimore, etc
I just wanted to say murder rate does NOT 100% correlate to less violence going on, less crime. Like in Chicago, people always use this type of statistic but it does not factor in that Chicago has some of the BEST hospitals in the U.S., like legit 4-5 top tier hospital systems all throughout the city with some of the best physicians in the world. So you're likely to survive a gunshot. And because of medical technology improvements, better training, science moving forward, and the medical team experience dealing with this constantly, this has gotten better over time too. Murder rate is not equal to violent shootings and other crimes. If you go on multiple news sites for Chicago for example, you can see multiple crime sprees by the same crews daily. Lots of car jackings and muggings at gunpoint. Plenty of people still get hit or shot regardless if they comply. Before, people would give up their things and they'd take off. Not anymore; now they'll beat you, hit you in the face with their weapon or shoot you still, 3-5 people out of a car doing this. It don't matter your age, race, gender, nothing, often even people 2-3 people walking together ain't as safe. Plenty of people fire their weapon, regardless of intent and the bullet goes somewhere. And a lot of people think pre-COVID, saying oh it's only in so and so hoods. No it's not anymore. The sprees are all over the city, even way up North. And that's just the more obvious violent crime. Hell, not all of it is reported either; I hear plenty of shots out my window that never get reported on any news site even on the Northside. It is what it is but some people completely ignore it when talking about what it's really like. So when people try to downplay things as "not as bad", "crime ain't as bad" "homicides are down", it's not telling the true picture of crime. Plus for victims of crime, whatever it may be and their friends & family, that trauma can last a years/decades or a lifetime. What good does being part of a slightly better statistic mean to them?
Anybody from Minneapolis knows it’s the northside that has been the worst and it’s always been that and it will always continue to be that way. Only thing you could do is honestly move away from that kind of neighborhood you don’t got no other choice. Whenever they start moving out to the neighborhood you live in right now you just move further out from the city easy.
It feels like all the waiting we’re doing will be rewarded with two new episodes. 🤞🏾if not that than this next episode will be very detailed and probably a bit longer

I grew up over northside from 2004-2015, and live just outside of there nowadays and am over there daily. If you mind your business over north, barely anyone will bother you. Most shit that happens is within people that know each other and grow up in that lifestyle.

Still way way more crime than all the areas around. I live near and we get overflow crime from the cities tryin shit in small towns 24/7
No your wrong, Minneapolis is one of the most violent cities in the country per capita, Murder wise its not the worst but it still ranks top 20.
You should do one on south of Minneapolis
Not really much to report on in South. Everything bad happens in North.
And even the drug use has gone down since '21. Shout out to the pandemic?
Anybody from Minneapolis knows it’s the northside that has been the worst and it’s always been that and it will always continue to be that way. Only thing you could do is honestly move away from that kind of neighborhood you don’t got no other choice. Whenever they start moving out to the neighborhood you live in right now you just move further out from the city easy.
South side is tame compared to North side
Southside is way more dangerous are you delusional@@MPLS_Andy
