I am from Minnesota and I am Somali just like these kids, but I recently moved away from Minneapolis to the suburbs. Im 26 now and lived through many of these same things. I know of most of these men in this video just either growing up around them in the city, school, and local mosques. I just want to say you really hit the point well. I want to add that things in this city are really not looking good for the young Somali kids. Our parents fled civil war and unimaginable trauma and fled here to give our generation and their kids a chance to live a prosperous life. They wanted us to take full advantage of what this country has to offer and make a life for ourselves here. Its so sad to see my young brothers choosing this lifestyle and acting the way they do, trying to imitate gangs and violence that they should have no part in. I wish every one of you reading this to be thankful and grateful for being raised the way you were
As a Somali girl, I think one of the main reasons many male children end up in gangs is because of a lack of parenting. What I’ve noticed & is very prevalent in the Somali community is parents paying too much attention to their daughters while letting their sons do anything. Many of the sons end up joining gangs or going down a dark path. Many even have died. I notice a HUGE difference between boys who’s parents actually payed attention to them vs the ones who have been neglected. Boys who have been cared for are usually good kids who are into their religion and try to stay clear from any harmful things. I come from a big city where Somali gangs are prevalent & lived around them for a big part of my life. I’ve also heard stories and seen them play out. I think this is one of the biggest factors as to why this happens.
Ya, because they breed so fast too, nothing slowing down the breeding when everything is free tax dollars paying for it. They don't pay attention to thier kids because they have 6 of them for extra free money, not because they want to pay attention to them.
@@bayersbluebayoubioweapon8477 Rochester MN, 2nd highest population of Somali outside of Somalia. They're are so many that see that the people around them are seen as equal, share common (sense) beliefs, raise their children, don't become baby factories (for the state to pay for) and want see all of us prosper.... and then you have the people who think they are entitled because they have been given everything, see others as why they don't succeed and will not ever work for it because it's everything has always been given, they are the same people but raised by different ideals, who are we really sick of? Answer this knowing I've never voted for a republican, or democrat
It’s the kids. The adults who actually have memories of fleeing Somali are generally all upstanding citizens. But that was back in the 1990s. The second generation Somalis who were born in America are the problem. Somali culture does not value a strong father figure and many of these young men on the streets lack guidance. Somali men need to step up for their families and be involved in the children being raised. Not to mention a lot of these families have 5+ kids. Too many for one woman to discipline on her own. Especially when the boys become physically stronger around 11-12 years old.
I was born and raised in rural MN. I went to the UofM in 2011 and met a good friend who was Ethiopian. We ended up down by riverside and ran into some Somali’s (identified by my friend) who came up to us and said they’d kill us if we didn’t turn around. He looked at me and his eyes said they were serious. We turned around. My friend then told me about the Somali gangs in Minneapolis. I had no idea until then. It’s good to see a video on it to spread awareness.
I'm from Minneapolis and live by Riverside and you covered this well. A lot of these gangs were started in the 90's and than co-opted by the new younger generation which is sad and an embarrassment for us somalis.
It is sad, I worked with a lot of somalis in chanhassen and they were wonderful. It was around 2004 Many of them were my friends. It's terrible to think that their children are caught up in this.

No, it’s the mentality. I know some Afghan immigrants who almost spoke no english when they came but studied and worked hard and within 3 years learned the language, have 4 exceptional kids who help their parents and now they bought a really nice big house. There was no "George Floyd killing". He was a drug addict that died of a massive overdose of fentanyl (they found 3 times the amount in his system that would kill a normal adult male) and also meth. Not to mention he also tested positive for covid which might have contributed. The kneeling across the neck and shoulder blade by Chauvin had nothing to do with his death.
MNSURE pays for several family members to be driven by a cab to a dosing clinic - literally ALL of them are Somali. St Paul has a massive Hmong population (the Somali refugees mostly live across the river), I graduated with like 800 ppl, abt _30_ of them had the surname "Nguyen"

I grew up in MN with many Somali, Hispanic, White, and African Americans. There was so much tension in the school at all times. We used to have "meetings" with the principal, and we would have to squash any beef we had with the other ethnicities. It was pretty wild.
Due to a scholarship I received in Europe for studies at a University outside Seattle in the early 90s, I visited both Minneapolis, USA and Toronto, Canada, but then there was none of this that is described in the video, for most of the people originally from Somalia were either students or taxi drivers. I hope that leading Somali representatives, together with those concerned, will succeed in turning the situation around so that they can return home one day to contribute to the reconstruction of Somalia.
I grew up in Cedar Apartments back in the 1980's. It was like Hippyville, and good play theaters and concert halls around there. The Red Sea is an Ethiopian Reggae bar 2 blocks from the U of M campus. Lots of beautiful girls would show up there :) In the 1990's Somali people came after the war and were very nice. They opened business like coffee and cafe with very good food. Their kids were left to run around while parents worked hard. The kids around there were very competitive and would have to out do each other. They picked up and learned really bad habits Very Quickly from TV and other schools. No accountability, parents away (working) and being different from others socially, religiously and culturally. Especially in cold Nordic Minnesota, being Jamaican teen, I know how that feels. No sandy beaches around! Locked in an your home 7 months of the year. You get bored unless u pick up Skiing, Hockey or some other great winter activity to meet other people. Their parents didn't speak the language so when they were at school they couldn't help with the curriculum. Also Minnesota schools are very hands off with the learning. If the parent are integrated and a high achiever the child will get more attention and do well. If not, the child suffers heavy neglect by teachers and left to their own devices. Talking to Somali parents you find out their schools back home must teach kids. They had no Idea it is not like that here, they fully trusted the schools :( I went to see my grandmother at Cedar in 2002. In the elevator Somali kids were cursing N-word and more badly, they were 8th graders. I couldn't take it and I'm black too and was about to say something. Then an older Somali women shouting at the boys to stop cursing and and acting like fools. They didn't listen because there dads were at work or away truck driving :( It got worse in that area after that. I still live in the Twin Cities but haven't gone around Cedar for about 12 years now. Didn't know it got that bad.

Thanks for a great and unbiased report. I am a Somali immigrant who is proud to call Minnesota a new home and it is traumatizing to feel unsafe in some neighborhoods of Minneapolis specially since the pandemic. I hope our communities and law enforcement come with a viable solution before things get out of hand. A side story I would recommend for future edition may be is how: a) some of the community members sometimes help these criminals get out of country, b) how some other parents decided to deport their gang children back to East Africa for ‘rehabilitation’ and c) how that is also destroying other communities back home as these gangs reorganize and commit crimes. A good example of this is the Super Power gang in Eastleigh, Nairobi busiest Somali business district in Kenya.
Why Minnesota out of all states? Why would Somalis pick a climate so different than their bodies are acclimated to? Being a native American from Southern California and much closer to each state then Somalia I wouldn't go there myself. Not much left to brag about there since the 80's.

An ethnic-based gang with 10 members can destroy a community of 10,000. There are Kurdish gangs in Nashville, Armenian gangs in California, Vietnamese gangs in multiple states. They're a huge strain on their communities.
Freedom's scary, if you don't like it, go to your natural home, north korea. This is hilarious, the outlaw and the gangster are two of the most culturally american icons you can find, in fact i cannot even think of more unique American icons. For over 200 years we've glorified the gangster, the cowboy outlaw (which funny enough is more mexican influence than crusty englishmen), the gunslinger..... but they're black right? Thats the real issue. Stop dancing around your bullshit and have the balls to say what you mean. Hey, how do you feel about the Ukraine refugees we're taking in? Those neo-nazi's? Is their neo-nazi ideology and culture too much and is it going to destroy communities? Probably not right? They'll fit right in, in your neighborhood.
This sounds eerily similar to the story of the Hmong people, who immigrated to the US in the 60's, 70's and 80's, and eventually began calling MN home. Hmong gangs arose to band together in the face of racial discrimination and assaults. Eventually, it devolved into Hmong gangs fighting eachother, and becoming a general menace to society, just like how this video is describing the Somalis. However, as the Hmong community grew, and became an integral part to society and the Twin cities culture, and faced less racial discrimination, the gangs eventually started disappearing all together. So maybe this could happen to the Somali community as well. But I suppose there are many different factors that could affect this potentiality. We can only hope for the best.
My first apartment of my own was in the heart of the Somali district in Minneapolis. I met many amazing ppl, but it’s sad that the tribal divisions that ripped apart the country of Somalia were brought over here, and continue to tear apart the community. Unity is needed in this community!

There are plenty of good Somali folks but they are under mined by the racist, always suspicious people that make it very hard for assimilation.

Throughout the years, that same name would pop up in news stories about violence and one story of a woman with the same last name being accused of sending money from Rochester back to Somalia to aid in whatever war that was going on there. It can be summed up as sensationalism, just notice the sinister background music line. Lol it’s probably straight from UA-cam search for “sinister crime background music”. People love to spotlight and paint stories, Yes these murders and gang activity is deplorable but in the grand scheme of things there are so many more actual sinister gangs across America. Crime is something that needs to be tackled and policed agreed ,but it’s not something special to certain minority groups but the violent crime usually is between rival gangs. From even the stats that were given, at a very generous estimate, there are 1000 Somalis in violent gang activity. And to be even more generous we will use the estimate of the Somali population at 80000. That means .0012 percent of the Somali population and that’s at the most generous of numbers. These Somali gangs don’t even near those numbers these are very small gangs that police are very capable of policing.
The list shown also had 100% girl gangs?
Ya, because they breed so fast too, nothing slowing down the breeding when everything is free tax dollars paying for it. They don't pay attention to thier kids because they have 6 of them for extra free money, not because they want to pay attention to them.

They had no Idea it is not like that here, they fully trusted the schools :(
I went to see my grandmother at Cedar in 2002.

I lived in Rochester up until 2 years ago, I now live in Mankato. I grew up with many Somali friends and never knew there was any type of gang war, so this is interesting to watch. The last name Farah does stand out to me because, I was friends with a girl for many years throughout middle school, high school, and college who had the same last name. Anyone that I knew that also had the same last, was related to her. Throughout the years, that same name would pop up in news stories about violence and one story of a woman with the same last name being accused of sending money from Rochester back to Somalia to aid in whatever war that was going on there. My friend would end up talking about it and then I’d put 2 and 2 together. My friend was always a straight A student who excelled in all her classes. She’s never been in any trouble. She went to college and got her nursing degree. Another Somali girl I grew up with became a news anchor for a few networks here in Minnesota, another is a distinguished bio chemist, some Somali boys I knew grew up to become doctors that work at Mayo. Just goes to show you that just like every other race, there are people out there that just choose to be bad people.
