I... don't think that's for us to just decide like that. On the other hand though combine have been shown faking humanity in order to accomplish their goals.
It seems like people are turning Gordon from a mute husk, into a character of his own. Kind of like the Master Chief from Halo was supposed to be a vessel for the player. But as we all know, in later games he became something more than just a vessel. And I kinda like that Freeman is becoming a character. Scarred by the horrible events he was forced to take part in. If there ever will be a half-life 3 like the game, touching on the effects of Alyx's changing the fate of her father... I think it would be accepted by everyone, if Gordon said a few words, just at the very end. Something like "Finally." or, "I did it." You know.
Exactly, I hate when amazing games severely minimize the protagonist to the point of making him an empty shell without emotions just to "give experience to the player" that for me even damages the story a little and how the world portrays the main character. you can see that in Deltarune and Undertale for example, two spectacular games with mediocre protagonists that don't even have a proper genre, but Kris even has a merit for almost having a personality.
@@dkskcjfjswwwwwws413 well even then you can see kris's personality through context clues by the other characters or the dialogue options, it's just very obscure and hard to notice on first playthrough

He's too focused on his task
Woah, your first time using SFM? Did you like, have any prior knowledge of other programs beforehand? Because that's impressive and totally a confidence boost
MIT graduate receives literal plot armor. We all knew he had no voice in the matter. The world cascaded around Freeman, but did we ever ask about unforeseeable consequences? No, we took a crowbar into the battle of our minds. What was it all for? One man could be the catalyst to our very end. If only his chains were unbound. Freeman knows the answers to our questions. The answers arent what scare him though, looking in the mirror does.
I am of a mind that Gordon Freeman should remain a mute protagonist, but that the in-game characters should not react to this. They should, to a degree, talk with him as though he talks with them. We would not have this characterization of the One Free Man if we had had a speaking Freeman. Letting him be mute allows us to use our imagination and create our own Gordon Freeman. He is not a self-insert, but a canvas ready for paint.
@B No , I mean that we should mainly stick with how the original Half-Life and how Half-Life 2 did it (with the possible exception of the line where Alyx says "You're a man of few words, huh?"). You have room to imagine in those games. Perhaps Freeman's Mind is what you imagine, perhaps it's something more like a quiet but kind scientist who is simply thrust into this mess, and perhaps it is something wildly different. What allowed us to get Freeman to this point is that Freeman is an undefined character.
