      In many ways they have - a great design team and young management, a good attitude and a bit more humility than one associated with Airfix in the past. Not perfect of course, none of us is, but certainly better and better IMHO.

      Oddball question for you Les... Seeing how you are dealing with Kiwi/Aussie prices and associated supply constraints, would you buy an Airfix kit of a plane at this scale, and similar price point, and substitute the actual plane (i.e. Jaguar, A-10, Typhoon, Mig/Su, etc). My thinking is not a top tier choice of plane, but just below it, I know Spitfire is coming, and if it's anything like this quality, would be a top tier choice of mine to grab. Being an American myself, Airfix is really looked down at as far as quality versus price here, so acquiring a specific kit usually requires going online to find, and gets pricey quickly. Mostly the cheaper ($10-20 range) common kits of the flash and ejection pins era can be found in main hobby retailers. Does the fit of this kit, get you and your mates looking at Airfix differently, especially if followed through with similar quality productions? It's something I am discussing with a few people here in Florida and would appreciate your perspective.

      @@crazylocha2515 greatings CrayLocha, I do have the Airfix BE Lightning but the price does escape me, I think it may have been about $80-90aus it is still not finished, the only thing I did or do not like is the colour of the plastic, it is a pale bluish colour, I generally find the pricing of kits can be a little pricey, but not exorbitant, and if you want it GET IT, I would be reluctant to pay over $100aus for a kit, I do tend to buy some of the older Tamiya kits as they still fit perfectly and have good parts count, I think dollar for dollar kit are cheaper in the US, but if you lok at the exchange rate then the prices are cheaper here in Australia/New Zealand, and will I be getting the Buccaneer hell yes, but I would prefer the RAF version, hope this answers your question, happy modelling from a Kiwi living in Australia.

      @@lesthiele4921 generally it does, and thanks for your time answering. I usually do grab a kit that hits a particular fancy. The Katy ambulance was more for the shipping from the UK than the actual kit (because beer glass 🍺). Silly, I know. Here in the States, Airfix is considered just above the Revell and Monogram kits of yesteryear. It's interesting to see how the reputation of each has been changing by generation of modellers (age range). It's all about how the step up in quality is changing perspectives. And the follow through. Was curious how it was seen down under. Thanks again

      Yes there was, and that was for the S.1 but not all the squadrons had it. 800NAS, for example, did deploy with Red Beard capability but retained the EDSG upper and white lower surfaces, although they also had the pastel anti-flash roundels. The bronze nose cone was bare fibreglass IIRC, until they had a dielectric paint to cover the radome.

      @@garys_stuff @Graham some extra words of encouragement for you. Am fortunate enough to have a local hobby shop that has some kits from another local hobbyist where he just practices on the cockpit and seat painting. I usually pick them up for around half price. Have about every Mk version of the Hurricane and Spitfire now in my stash. He usually leaves a few printouts of research with them, sometimes some extra doodads too. I've been told he buys kits cheap on Fleabay etc, and just really likes doing the cockpits. Shrug and okay, complete kits half price sometimes with bonus content 👍🔔👍🔔 don't have to twist my arm that hard. Paint mules (practice pieces) can be cleaned and recleaned. Simple Green is a common one here in States, it's basically a Citrus based cleaner and can be bought in concentrate form pretty inexpensively. Let the mule dry, clean with simple dish soap and water, let that dry, then paint your heart out again. Talk to your local shop and see if any local club members have any suggestions for a mule or two. Keep practicing. Plenty of excellent creators on YT that give great tips too. Good luck and let us know how you are doing with it.

    Looking very nice. Ejector pin marks seem to be one of Airfix's ongoing issues. I'm still building the 1/24th Mosquito after a year now. While it is a beautiful kit, the ejector pin marks are everywhere in all sizes, and often in quite conspicuous locations that will be seen when the model is finished, like the weapons bay doors. Very challenging to eradicate. This would be my #1 issue for Airfix to fix.

    • @crazylocha2515
      @crazylocha2515 Рік тому +1

      That was one of my early comments on Gary's look at the sprues. His surprisingly few comments about the ejection pins has been a positive. Really, day 3 and 2 pins dealt with, that kind of rarity is in Tamiya shake and bake territory. Definitely an improvement. Between this kit build, and the company comments during the Creator Day presentations, looks like efforts are being made and they are listening. Will admit, the lack of large amounts of pin problems is mind blower for me, a welcome one.

      The 1/24 Mossie was designed 12 years ago by a completely different team.
      Current designers take much more care in that regard (and it helps that at least one of them is a proficient modeller himself)

      @@whtalt92 Hello again. I just watched an Airfix build of their 1/72 Bristol Beaufort which, according to Scalemates, was a new tool in 2021. It also had extremely prominent mold release marks on the interior walls of the fuselage where there is a lot of intended detail also. The builder basically ignored the marks which would be like 18 inched across in real size. So, 2021, are these also the current designers who take extra care? I'm not trying to be wise guy.

      @@wkelly3053 I've pulled mine (2 kits) from the stack, but they are not as visible as you think - neatly tucked away in the wing root/spar attachment, or just outside view from the door & tail wheel. That is what I meant with care - working within the limitations of your production methods to get the best result.
      I've seen worse placement of EPs on so-called flawless perfect brand kits.

      Well I don't know what the best is, but I use one called EverBuild Stick 2. I tend to use the high viscosity one as it gives you 10-20 seconds to set things right before curing. I got mine online amzn.to/3A2Gv0D

    Gary, question for you, why are the wingtips made in clear plastic when it looks like you have painted all of it?

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  Рік тому

      No idea - they did it on the 1/72 as well. There are two versions of the wingtips because the larger ones were used to give improved handling, but were removed and straight tips fitted later to reduce fatigue on the wings when the RAF were taking corners at 500 knots with nothing on the clock but the maker's name. Maybe the transparent plastic gives a better mould for this kind of relatively thin part? Airfix will know...

    • @randalscott7224
      @randalscott7224 Рік тому +1

      As Gary says it gives a better mould for such a thin part and reduces the fiddliness of trying to attach miniscule (even more so in 1/72!) clear lenses for the navigation lights at the leading edge for either the RN or RAF versions.

    Just taking a few moments to look back at the build portions so far Gary, now had my second realization of this kit. I know I mentioned during the unboxing about the ejection pins, specifically lack of seeing any and your lack of comments about (until today 😜), Wow, those seams and joints. A 48th scale Airfix without need for putty?!?! Really?? Keep hearing you say "this guides into xxx thusly" and snap it goes, "these alignment marks xxx" pop it's together, and on and on. Really?? It's been that easy generally? [[Looks in coffee mug ☕ to see if something is not right in there]] I think my GS mug has been hanging around your Mystic Mug too much and started having it's own hallucinations. I think I should make a fresh pot and watch these 3 build videos again. Am beginning to think Pramjit is an alien guided here by SpaceX to solve the whirled peas issues with well fitting and designed models. That or he's done an incredible job with this kit with the rest of the design team. I need a coffee ☕. So far, that's been a kick *ss job Pramjit, this mugs for you sir. Cheers

      @garys_stuff  Рік тому +1

      It really does go together exceptionally well. One of those kits where, if there is a seam visible or a tiny gap then I automatically assume I've done something wrong! A few bits and pieces here and there could be better but there is nothing major wrong with this kit IMHO, I think it is everything I had hoped for and more. Except in the wrong squadron markings...

  • @timmy3822

    Hi Gary. Watched all your build videos for this wonderful Bucc kit and I'm blown away by the detailing. The Buccaneer was always a favourite of mine, especially the "Sky Pirates" Desert Storm livery, but these FAA jets look gorgeous in that dark sea grey. Anti-flash white looks best though I think for the older S.1 variant.
    Have you built any of Airfix's 1:72 scale Bucc's? I'm trying to get back into the modelling scene, having not built anything remotely like this since I was throwing together and poorly painting Warhammer 40K tanks for my Imperial Guard army in my early teens! I don't have an air brush, any tips for somebody brush painting on large surfaces such as this? I'm painting with acryllics, mainly the Tamiya XF paints as I've got a couple of naval kits from them which I'm going to build. I'm making some decent progress with my IJN Zuikaku carrier build, then I have HMS Nelson to build! Very interested in doing a Buccaneer build and the FRS.1 SHAR kit though.
    Thanks for the videos, it's great watching an experienced modeller at work. It's helpful to see your thought processes and how you approach a build. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this beautiful jet come together. :)

      I have built four of the new Airifx 1/72 Buccaneers - two were converted to S.1 models with aftermarket resin, so there is a folded and unfolded version of each of the two marks. The folded S.1 also has a folded radome. One of the S.1s has the Red Beard nuclear bomb on its special bomb bay door. All the aircraft are from 800NAS.
      800squadronproject.wordpress.com/2020/11/29/2-into-1-goes-twice/
      In general they are very similar in design to the 1/48th, but with less detail parts! The overall way of putting the fuselage together is very similar, as is the wing fold and the tail airbrake. I really liked making them.
      There are some good brush painting videos on YT - generally for a big area then a broad, flat brush works well, but certainly I think a few coats of thinner paint rater than one coat of thick paint seems sensible!
