Window Seal Rust??

  • This style seal is known to leak, hold water, then RUST!! (ESPECIALLY ON VANAGONS) This is the correct way to stop rust. You have to blast it all out of there and get every bit of it out!! I also like to go even further using phosphoric acid to make sure I got ALL the rust out, incase there was any hiding between the sheetmetal. I used ZINC RICH primer as another rust fighter, it was what I used on the bare metal. Zinc acts as a sacrificial anode and will slow the rusting process down if it were to ever start again. I siliconed the seal too. I did everything I could to stop this. Now I can install my new panel, the window will be completely sealed, and won't drip water all over it!! No rust either!!
This is a good read, its where I got the silicone idea from.

Just did all my window frames, and I would advise getting brand new seals everytime as you're just inviting future problems using old seals! They're only $35-$45 each...so why risk it. It's a VERY difficult job putting in new seals on some of the windows, like the rear drivers wardrobe window, especially if you have the wardrobe...but I did it myself so it isn't impossible!

Looks great! Next time try instead of the silicone to inject in mineral oil. Reapply every couple years. It will not lock in any moisture like the silicone will. Rust belt user experience :)

We're living parallel lives. My van has a couple spots like that around the windows. I have the same welder too :)

I’m thinking since you had the window out might as well replace the seal. Isn’t that the reason it was leaking and caused rust in the first place? Or the rust had been building before and the seal was replaced without repair? If that’s the case then makes sense that you could repair without replacing the seal. I need to do this same job but afraid I won’t be able to get the window back in but you said it should be easy so I should stop being a weak sauce and do it. I also need to order the OEM paint to match before I start this project because I don’t want to have the window out for weeks. I did just get a welder so that should also help. Except mine is a gasless flux mig so hope I can get it to work right. Thanks for the inspiration 😊

I'd advise getting rid of that thing. You're holding up traffic every time you leave the yard. Those are dogs on the highway since way back to 1970. 😅
