Harrison had to make a B side for a single. He went to Tom Petty's house to get his guitar. They ended up at Dylan's house with the others. He asked Dylan for some lyrics. Dylan asked for the song name. Harrison looked around and saw a box with Handle With Care on it. The rest just happened after that. Too good for a B side, it became the first song of an album. They only had 10 days before Dylan went on tour. Ten days and 10 songs. One song a day written and recorded. Later mixed at Harrison's studio in England. Watch the making of video. Legends.

A Wilburry is a term coined by Jeff and George when yhey were recording Cloud 9, George would screw something up and Jeff would say "We'll bury it in the mix" so they became known as Wilburry's and then became the name of the group, love George's sense of humor

I'd like to give a shout out to the drummer, Jim Keltner, aka Buster Sidebury. He's been a premiere session drummer and sideman to a Who's Who of the greatest rock and pop stars since the Sixties and is still working into his eighties. He's as famous in the industry as any of the other Wilburys and a worthy member of such an accomplished group.

    • @Emondotcalm

@umpdaddy1, Yes Yes yes!! Being a drummer myself I've often wondered why he rarely even get's a mention. The guy's got a phenominal FEEL! That certain elusive SOMETHING. The beat he's playing sounds bare-bones basic but if you asked someone else to play the exact same beat it wouldn't FEEL the same. I love that one well placed tom hit he does a few times in the song! No big fancy fills... Just one tom hit right in the right place! WOW! Sometimes less really IS more!

He was a sort of puppetmaster in the 80s and 90s who had a hand in a lot of artists careers (willingly). Love him or semi-loathe him, his songwriting talent was undeniable.

Jeff Lynne is a musical genius who sings virtually all of ELO's songs and plays guitar, writes their music and lyrics and produced some of it. He was the force that got the Willburys together and produced them. Please do a lot more ELO particularly from the 1970s and early '80s. Anything from their best albums, Out of the Blue and A New World Record, or Face The Music and Time. An early ELO classic that accentuates their orchestration/rock fusion is the uptempo Roll Over Beethoven.

Each one of them revered Roy, and he was so happy at the resurgence of his career in the 80's (kudos to Lynne for the production on Roy's album Mystery Girl) - his voice is like butter! In the mid 80s, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame began and started inducting all these legends. Then, The Beatles first came out on CD in 1987. This record was released in 1988. Also, George Harrison had a solo album and Roy Orbison had a hit record. Then, in 1989, Tom Petty had a huge solo album. Volume 3 of the Wilburys came after that. Jeff Lynne influenced and was involved with most of these releases then went on to reunite The Beatles in 1995 for the Anthology sets and new songs. It was a great time in music.

Great reaction, Sam and Phil! There have been several 'super groups' in the past. IMO, these legends are right there with the best! End of the Line is another reallygood Wilbury song.

Group origin: Jeff Lynne had produced Harrison's album Cloud Nine, and was in the middle of producing Orbison's album Mystery Girl. The record company needed a B-Side for a European single of George's This is Love. In LA, they needed a recording studio on short notice, so they called Bob Dylan to ask if they could use his home studio, nearby. Having dinner with Lynne and Orbison, George invited Roy to the session. George had left a guitar at Tom Petty's house, and on going to retrieve it, invited Tom to the session. Session drummer Jim Keltner was to provide drums on the B-Side. Hearing a run through at Dylan's studio, Bob also joined. It was decided that this song was just to good for a B-Side, and being friends and great fans of eachother, they decided to build a whole album. The other "hit" single was End of the Line. On the first album, Volume 1 the two hits were written by George, but, they all featured as lead vocalists on various tracks, and all are great. Dylan's tunes were Tweeter and the Monkey Man, Congratulations, Dirty World, and Margarita, with Like a Ship as a bonus track on CD reissues. Petty was featured on Last Night, with an assist from Orbison, and also had some featured middle eights. Roy got the towering Not Alone Anymore, and a couple of middle eights, like you heard here, he was still cutting Mystery Girl, so didn't have a lot of material. Lynne sang Rattled, and swapped verses with George on End of the Line. George Had this one, End of the Line, Headed for the Light, and the bonus track Maxine.

Keep doing The Wilbury’s. A bunch of good tunes. Definitely check out The Devil’s Been Busy. It was just a fun project and they gave themselves individual names like they were all brothers. There was talk of Del Shannon joining them after Roy had passed. Although the drummer Jim Keltner is generally known to the public, he’s a very renowned studio musician who’s played with a ton of people.

Legends all. Got together for a short time. What a concept....Harrions, Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty.......one time lighting in a bottle. I don't know if young folks raised on hip hop, rap or whatever can really appreciate this. Its way more than a cute ......for sure. You've explained the vocal diversity .....that's great...but difference here is who they are. They are absolute the legends.

Masquerading as the Wilbury brothers, the participants would be known as Nelson (Harrison), Otis (Lynne), Lucky (Dylan), Lefty (Orbison), and Charlie T. Jr. (Petty) Wilbury.

I had heard, but I don't know how true it is, that the Wilbury personas came about because each member was contracted to a different record label and none of these companies had given permission for the collaboration. A 10 day window of opportunity was far too short a time to throw in legal wranglings as well, so they just went ahead and recorded together anyhow, disguising themselves with 'transparent' alter egos. Any potential objections, however, soon disappeared when the record companies smelled money!

Thanks, guys - this is the "super-est" of super groups... they had so much fun getting together originally to support Roy Orbison... (at the behest of George Harrison) - but yep, they all put their egos aside for this -- special note for drummer Jim Keltner.. who was not an "official wilbury" - and declined the offer... appreciate your reaction...(p.s. the best Wilburys song that features Roy Orbison is "you're not alone anymore)...

When they first started recording together, not being familiar with each other they had some glitches in the recordings. They decided they could bury the glitches in the mix. Someone suggested "Trembling Wilburys" (we'll bury). Later someone suggested "Traveling Wilburys" and it stuck. A super group was born!

The major reasons why the Traveling (sic) Wilburys never travelled was the sadly premature death of the great Roy Orbison in 1988 at only 52, just as the Wilburys were hitting their stride together.
Obviously, all the members had their own separate careers and were well established stars, so no doubt their own commitments would have made it difficult to get a window together to tour, but I bet if Orbison had lived and the band had continued on for long enough, they would have at least made a few live appearances - maybe just one-offs in various countries.
Sadly, we will never know, and now three of the five are no longer with us. But at least they left us with their own respective back catalogues of great sounds, and the combined talent of the Wilburys like this great song and "End Of The Line".

You should see the documentary, the making of this album called Volume One. All the songs were written by these 5 guys together in 10 days, written and recorded. Jeff Lynn produced the recordings and this album won a Grammy award! Roy Orbison passed away shortly after it was released and was a huge commercial success. The song, End of the Line featured all their vocals but they hadn’t produced the music video yet, but they did pay tribute to Roy in the video. They made a second album called Volume Three….just to mess with fans heads! Also a great album. The documentary is excellent and fun. This group came together very organically…not planned. They helped George with Handle With Care…and it was so much fun and sounded so good, he decided not to put it on his album, but rather write more songs and create a new album. The called themselves the Traveling Wilbury’s to throw off their fans. They knew it would be played on the radio as a song from The Traveling Wilbury’s and folks might recognize their vocals.

Orbison was actually the force that brought them together, when Tom and Bob heard Roy was going to be there for the recording the quickly wanted in on it. The Traveling came from they only had 10 days for the recording session before Dylan had to go out on tour, Wilbury was a pun of George's from a producer's remark years earlier that when George made a slight flub in the playing the producer stated "don't worry we'll bury it in the mix". So afterwards when he made a slight flub it was called a "Wilbury".
