This is some of the most brilliant song writers and musicians known to mankind, all rolled into one little band. It may be a century before the world sees this much brilliance consolidated again...if ever.
Amen to that
Bob Dylan took the lead vocals and told the story.
He probably wrote it too.
@@briancastle4941 At least the verses.
@@briancastle4941 Bob & Tom wrote the verses, Jeff & George wrote the chorus. (This was the only track on the album that Roy was not a part of.)
"I'm not fooled by Tweeter's curls. I knew him long before he ever became a Jersey girl!" I love that line.
Bob Dylan is the best story teller ever!
The in joke in this song is that it's filled with references to Springsteen songs: Highway 99, Mansion on the Hill, Thunder Road, Stolen Car, etc. Plus, they mention my hometown of Jersey City. The boys clearly had a ball making this record.
As a huge Springsteen fan, I got the references back in 1989.
Makes me wonder, have they ever done a reaction to an actual Springsteen song? Jungleland would be a good one.
I have known this song since it was was released and always thought that Thunder Road and Jersey was a hint to Springsteen, but didn't know the whole Song was an homage from Dylan to him.
Respectfully the Headstones did this song with an entirely different vibe that I find much more energetic and a force to be reckoned with!
Speaking of Springsteen, how about some more Bruce love on this channel? The man is a national treasure.
This whole album is amazing. The circumstances surrounding how it came to be are so fun to hear about and you can see it all unfold in a documentary about the making of the album. All were great friends and they loved making music together.
Typical Bob Dylan. A genious poet and story teller, song writer. Legend.
In the 'Wilburys doc, George Harrison said this song impressed him watching Bob Dylan's process... he wrote out the whole song long hand on a single page with tiny writing that George couldn't even read, and Bob goes into the booth and sings it from that page, changing two lines in real time.
Phenomenal Talent, I bet he goes places one day ;)
As I recall it, the writing process was a co-work of Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. George Harrison said that none of the Brits in the Band understood a word of the slang expressions they both were "throwing" at each other.
Makes me think of the lyric from Margarita … she wrote a long letter on a short piece of paper. ❤️🇨🇦
You guys are so adorable. 💕❤️🇨🇦
@@trapperjakk 😂
Such a great song! One of my favorites from the Wilbury's.
What a Collection of Talent , grouped together as a Band , that only happens a rare few times in a lifetime , R.I P. - Roy , George , & Tom . As for You guys , J and Amber , I've been with you since the Start , and it's been an Amazing ride , Keep it up , you've only cracked the Door to awesome music of all Eras. Thank You for what you do .
We will never, at least in my lifetime, see another band of this caliber again.
The Beatles are pretty close!
@@michaelparsons5299 Nope. The best songwriter in the Beatles was also in the Wilburys, and neither John nor Paul could touch Dylan. Ringo is a treasure, but against Lynne, Orbison and Petty? Nope.
Settle down champ. It's just an opinion. The Beatles were prolific. We still talk about them and listen to their music almost 60 years on. Suggesting that a super band made up of individuals who were amazing in their own right that lasted for 5 minutes is superior to The Beatles is quite disingenuous! @@Hexon66
This is a song I have requested multiple times with a number of reactors... 1st reaction I have seen, thanks.
Thank you for doing so. This song is awesome. And should be more popular.
This was a homage to Bruce Springsteen.
There are many references to Springsteen songs in the lyrics.
No it's not
Yes, it most certainly is.
@@LanceHansford-nx8cnI've always read it was Dylan having fun poking Springsteen. It definitely includes a lit off Bruce references.
@@LanceHansford-nx8cn Dylan himself has said it was parody of the stereotypical Springsteen song. Basically Dylan breaking Bruce's balls.
@@johncampbell756 It's Bob Dylan, so it's both--if he didn't admire Springsteen, he wouldn't have bothered having a little fun with his songs, or Known so many of his songs! (I'm not a Springsteen fan, so I think I'm being fair here.) Dyland told Petty he wanted to write a song about 2 characters called the Monkey Man and Tweeter, and use places mentioned in Springsteen songs--the British guys said, "We're going home, we won't be much help with this one!" (One description of the process I read in an interview, so maybe it went down that way.) I Love this song. I think Dylan really, really wanted to use that line about "I'm not fooled by Tweeter's curls." It's great, especially today, to have a fairly old song make visible a trans character, and have such background on Tweeter--going to Vietnam and surviving, finding "out the hard way nobody gives a damn," coming home and somehow ending up feeling free to fulfill what must have been a lifelong, deep desire, and was able to keep his childhood friends, but unfortunately still be mixed up with drugs. For one "story song" Dylan and Petty have fleshed out some real characters for us here. Jan, her brother the undercover cop, his feelings at the end, wow--I love this song and love that the Rob Squad loves it and talks about the music!
"Not alone anymore" is my favourite song off this album and my favourite Roy Orbison song ever.
His singing is fantastic on that track. Nobody else can sing like Roy.
Even more poignant when he died soon after this record was released!
@@alleykeosheyan4779 absolutely, thankfully Tom Petty called him and told him the record was a hit and a massive success. So at least he knew before he passed.
@@whiterabbit1824 Oh wow, I didn't know that. Glad he was able to rest with that knowledge! Such a shame he was taken just as he was gaining ground with a whole new generation...
@@alleykeosheyan4779 and shortly after his death, his solo album Mystery Girl, came out, which was another big success.
Bob Dylan at his storytelling best. Love this song.
I have been requesting and waiting on this for a long time. Thanks so much for doing this one! When I first bought the album I thought WTH did i just listen to when i heard this one. It's my favorite Wilbury song ever.
I felt exactly the same way and ended up loving it.
Me too
Mine too I requested the play this 4 or 5 times more than any other song
Nelson Wilbury (George Harrison) - lead and harmony vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, slide guitar2
Otis Wilbury (Jeff Lynne) - lead and harmony vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar, keyboards; drums and cowbell on "Handle with Care"2
Charlie T. Wilbury Jr (Tom Petty) - lead and harmony vocals, acoustic guitar2
Lucky Wilbury (Bob Dylan) - lead and harmony vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, harmonica1
Lefty Wilbury (Roy Orbison) - lead and harmony vocals, acoustic and electric guitars1
This is my favorite Traveling Wilburys song. It's so unique sounding.
Grew up in the 80s and 90s. Listening to this song on long road trips in the American West was amazing. I became very precise at rewinding my walkman because of the the Wilburys and Springsteen.
Did not expect this one! Love the Wiburys
In the 90s, a Canadian band called Headstones covered this. It's more rocking and much faster. It's pretty cool.
They give The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald the same treatment . Throbbin' Hoods do a killer job of Sundown also.
Love the Headstones version even more. 😊
@@debrawilson9791 yes, me too. It rocks!!!
Yes the Headstones version is very good!
ua-cam.com/video/RyeqY16Re9s/v-deo.html This is a link to the Headstones . Their version rocks. Hugh Dillon the singer. is also an actor He was the sheriff in Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, Flashpoint
This song is like a novel in musical form.
Short story, back in 1988. My manager asked me what I wanted for grab bag Christmas, and I told her a traveling Wilburys, CD. I love when people ask me what I want for a present.😂❤ I’m very specific.
I get the great pleasure of seeing this year's Outlaw Festival....Willie Nelson/ Bob Dylan & John Mellencamp 😊
Yes! I will be going as well in June. I can’t wait!
I will be going in Hershey, Pa in July, no Mellencamp though, we get Robert Plant & Allison Krouse.
A Canadian band covered this song and it's really good. They're called "The Headstones".
I have suggested they do it at least half a dozen times.
Friends of mine formed a band when we were in high school back in the early 90's, they named their group Tweeter and the Monkey Men after this song. Fond memories of them playing at local bars, city celebrations and county fairs.
That's probably Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics on the keyboards in this song. The album was recorded in his home studio, much of it written at his kitchen table.
They really were a super group! Look at the legends in that band. WOW
Hi there. I'm surprised you didn't recognize the voice of Bob Dylan. He wrote the story, composed and he sing it. That rasp voice is unmistakable 😊
The 1 day I miss you guys yesterday & you play it.
YESS! I requested this song 4 or 5 times (more than any other song) so “Jay and Amber” (a Huge thank you 😊 goes out from This old Jersey Boy) for playing this classic that never got its due.
I use to play and sing this song in 1 of my rock bands I was in.
And it has in it 1 of my all-time favorite rock lyrics “In Jersey anything’s legal as long as you don’t get caught”. Too bad I always got caught!
As Petty so perfectly put it about the birth of the Wilburys
“None of this would've happened without him. It was George's band - it was always George's band and it was a dream he had for a long time”.
As I put in the story of how George put together the band in 5 minutes but this is getting way to long as is, I always put to much back story in my texts so took it out. And I’ll write about how to “never underestimate a former Beatles clout”
If you two and everyone else (most know it well) want to hear a more famous Bob Dylan song that along with this song is maybe my favorite from Dylan. And what many consider the grestest singer song writer song ever with a
unbelievable story n perfect beautiful melody in “Tangled up in Blue” from Dylan’s classic Blood on The Tracks. Is your song.
Please do Not Alone Anymore by the Traveling Wilburys. Roy Orbison’s vocals are just *chefs kiss*
Thank you for getting to this one. I have been requesting it. Great story and great vibe from Lucky Wilbury, better known as Bob Dylan, who wrote it and sang lead. My suggestion is to do Wilbury Twist (original video) next. See how many of the guest stars you recognize knowing that the video was filmed in 1991. It's a lot of fun and all four of the remaining Wilbur's take the lead for a verse.
Thank you! One of my favorites by these super musicians!
I was waiting for Tweeter and the Monkeyman😁😁😁
Canadian group "Headstones" did a good cover in 1994 (a faster version)of this plus Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"in 2019 .One of their own songs "Cemetery" is also a good song
remembering 6-year-old me was dancing around the living room to this song.
This song should be made into a movie
Nice!! Wilbury’s were incredible and this is all Dylan. So great.
This is one of my favorite albums all good songs
I second the Wilbury Twist, especially if you watch the old video with John Candy!
I f*****g LOVE this song
The Traveling Wilburys were such a great amalgamation of talent, it’s so unfortunate that group never got a chance to do 5 or 6 collaborations. All the material they performed was and is so great to listen too. 😎🍺☮️
Totally agree, but it's almost a sad blessing that it was limited to 2 albums+, to maintain the legacy. Like the Gale Sayers for the music world.
Haven't heard this one, cool seeing Bob taking over. Amazing legends.
Love this song. It's actually pretty funny too! Most covers I've heard of it forget that part of the song.
Classic Bob Dylan.... check out the Headstones version....killer!!!!!
This is a little wink- and-nudge to Bruce Springsteen and his New Jersey story songs. Love it!!
Bob’s story songs are the best. The crown is HURRICANE by him about fighter Ruben Carter who was falsely accused of murder and sent to jail for years. Bob’s song helped get him out. There’s a great live performance of this on video.
I always thought Quentin Tarantino could take this song and make a great movie out of it
Absolutely!
I thought I remembered hearing that they were considering making a movie out of this. Not sure Tarantino would've been the best fit, though.
@@bethcrumpton476 He would be the perfect person. Or the Cohen bros. Scary and hilarious!
@@stinky60096 The Cohen Brothers!
@@bethcrumpton476Definitely the Coens would be a better choice. There’s a connection to the wit and wryness to Dylan, that Tarantino, for all his talent, doesn’t have.
Have you done the old Dylan song Hurricane? About the wrongly imprisoned boxer Hurricane Carter. A story, quite the song.
Also a great movie starring Denzel Washington
I second that.
Agreed! This tune definitely has some "Hurricane" vibes to it!
"Tweeter" is Bob Dylan's parody/sendup/tribute/homage to Bruce Springsteen, who was called "the new Dylan" early in his career.
Classic Dylan, could always fit all the lyrics into the song so effortlessly 👍
A group called the Headstones did a more rockin' version of this song and to this day I'm still not sure which version I like better
You guys should do a REACTION to ALL the songs on BOTH Traveling Wilbury's albums, they are ALL EXCELLENT and FUN!!
I’m from Jersey, Jersey City actually born and raised this song was played all the time in every neighborhood bar… The Lions Den that they mentioned was I’m pretty sure the real name was Fast Eddies but there were a lot of gambling spots back in the day
My favorite Wilbury's song. Classic snarly Dylan.
This song reminds me so much of my college years. Such a dark and funny song. Great reaction. Dylan killed it on the lead vocals.
This is what happens when Bob writes, is produced by Jeff and backed by Tom and George
Dylan just comes up w/ verse after verse after verse and the story just gets more interesting at it goes along .. dude, is just a crazy lyricist .. so many levels happening.
#theMaster
Havnt heard that song in forever an it's frigging awesome.👍🍻
Absolutely one of (probably #2) favorite songs from the first album. 24 then, 57 now.
Great job! Suggestion for you 1 song Hurricane by Bob Dylan. And movie Hurricane with Denzel Washington and how the song made the movie possible . Btw
You guys are amazing
Pastiche of Springsteen, but so much more than that. A great example of Dylan's sense of humour. Amazing track!
Jeff lynne from electric light orchestra produced the wilburys and did free fallin, and orbisons you got it, his posthumous hit. Watch you guys often, very cool and entertaining, thanx.
My kids loved this song because they got to say "hell". TW was one of our traveling CD's. Actually, cassette.
I taught my daughter to play electric guitar and she played (and sang) Green Day's "Boulavard of Broken Dreams" along with a boy (just friend) on bass and another girl on drums at the end of Year 6 and of her UK Primary School (10-11yo) . The girl on drums's Dad did the solo bits (sitting on the side of the stage to not upstage the kids). They rocked ❤. My daughter was upset that she couldn't yell out the F-word in school 😂 (we substituted 'messed'). It was a brilliant musical evening.
Has a similar lyrical vibe to Dylan's "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" from 1975's Blood on the Tracks album...musically it's very different, that song is much faster tempo and has much different instrumentation, but the sing-songy storytelling lyrics is a hallmark of many Dylan tunes, and that was the first one I thought of when trying to think of a Dylan tune similar to Tweeter.
How great is that? And it should come as no surprise, these guys were the best at what they did and they worked together on these tracks, no egos here...
I love the Headstones cover of this song, rarely do I prefer a cover but in this case I think the Headstones made this song 20x better.
this song has Dylan written all over it. Fantastic. Such story telling. Dylan does it best
Incredible song by a uber-talented super group. The whole album is incredible. Recorded in Dave Stewart's (Eurythmics guitarist & song writer) studio. This clearly makes reference to a lot of Americana and both Jeff Lynne (ELO) and George Harrison didn't really understand a lot of it. It was written by Bob Dylan with some help from Tom Petty. Don't get any more American than those two duded. RIP to George, Tom, & Roy. Just Dylan & Jeff remain. Huge loss to music is continuing to happen as these greats leave us. Behind them is not a lot of anything.
I think you would like the mid-80s Bob Dylan song, "Tight Connection To My Heart". The video has Bob's one and only dance move...
Obviously a Dylan composition. 🤔🥴🤫💯👍❤️
If you want a top notch cover of this, The Headstones do an incredible one.
Great song... Always enjoyed Dylan
I remember doing this kaoroke when I got drunk as hell... great times...
Love the Traveling Wilbury’s ❤️✌🏻🎶
Bob Dylan might not be the world's greatest technical singer, but he is one helluva storyteller!!
" Heading for the light "
You should definitely give the Headstone's cover of this a listen. It's much faster and so much more urgent. It's an excellent version (and the Headstones are an excellent rock band, and Canadian too!)
You really need to do their songs “The Devils Been Busy” and “ The Wilbury Twist”. Two really fun songs.
The Devil's Been Busy is one of my favorites.
Congratulations is oddly mesmerizing for me.
@@Hexon66 I know. There's just something about Bob!
@@Hexon66 yeah that’s another good one
Just brilliant absolutely brilliant. What else can you say. Thanks
Sometimes I think of Tweeter. Sometimes I think of Jan. Sometimes I dont think about nothing but the Monkey Man!
Haven't seen you guys in a while. I'm so glad to see you guys again. You are hands down the best music commentators around.
This was the only Song on Traveling Wilburys Volume 1. that Roy Orbison wasn’t featured In.
Love the Wilburys and this is one of my faves... love Bobs sense of humor and great writing in this track... and of course, they just sound amazing.
I love this song!
Check out Bob Dylan's song: When I Paint My Masterpiece

My favorite Wilburys tune. Not quite the same, check out 'The Rolling Stones - Monkey Man'. Micks slang for a married man at the time, lol.
Phenomenal ! ❤
The Headstones version of this is wicked (as others have also stated 😁) Well worth a listen.
You have GOT to listen to the version of this by The Headstones, a great Canadian group! They always say that if you are going to cover a song, do it at least as good as the original, and The Headstones literally BLOW THIS OUT OF THE WATER!!!!!
Not bad. I don't think I've heard this song before but I kinda liked it. Enjoyed the reaction.
New music requests:
1. "I'd Die Without You" by PM Dawn/1992
2. "O Sheila" by Ready For The World/1985
3. "Close To You" by Maxi Priest/1990 (Look at the official video Ext cut with kids in the picture. There were
a few different videos of this song and the official video Ext edition with kids in picture was the best.)
4. "Show Me The Way" by Regina Belle/1987
My favourite Travelling Wilburys song
Mine too!
song written pretty much by bob dylan and if you have heard some of his other songs you could tell. the entire album Vol 1, was written in like 7 days. I really think yall should watch the behind the scenes and making of the album. it is fascinating.
The perfect song that had to be written for Dylan to sing. The talent was amazing….
Although the song is officially written by all of them, the saying is that Dylan actually wrote this one and sang lead.
Could you have imagined if the Wilburys had done a tour or two behind their albums.
"In Jersey anything's legal as long as you not get caught" - I mean, damn...
Dylan nails that one!!!
Tom Petty And The Heart Breakers - " A Woman In Love ( It's Not Me ) (Official Video) 🎸 Early 1980's ROCKING Classic , hey guys youguys gotta check out their Late 70's and early 80's mega hits too just like this Hidden GEMS these song are amazing tooooo!!
Never heard this, love it!!! Great band ❤
“Heading for the Light” by The Travelling Wilbury’s is a great tune!
Just solid, good quality rock n roll 💯
Dylan loved songs about oddball characters.
This song is an epic
