Nice truck Joe. The oil pressure is low during idle because it most likely needs a new “Oil Pump Pick Up Tube O Ring” look into that . It fixed that same issue on my brothers 2008 Yukon and also on my 2000 GMC Sierra with a 5.3 L
@@JoesGoldenGarage The 8.1 Does not use the O ring referenced above, this is an old school engine with the oil pump in the back of the engine just like it was in the 60's. This is essentially the same engine architecture dating back to the 60's. The 8.1's typically only carry about 15-20 psi at idle with the 5w 30. My 2002 behaves exactly as yours does when I run 5w30, in the summer I switch to 15w40 and that usually keeps the oil pressure above 20 at idle. These are great engines as long as you always make sure to check the oil. They do burn a little.
@@basso83w I just got one my self a few months ago and that oil pressure gauge gave me a huge heart attack. Until I read more about the low idle pressure. I was thinking about using 10-w30 is 15-w40 better?
@@dominex128 I almost always run the 5w-30 that is recommended. I use the Costco Kirkland full synthetic with a bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer. In the hottest part of the summer I will sometimes go to 15w-40 also from Kirkland, but I prefer to stick with what te factory recommends.
I had my 2003 chevy Avalanche 2500 for 11 years I love it I'm keeping it forever my plan is to fix it up I love the 8.1 I have 203,426 miles on mine just minor fixes and pm
I've got an 04 avalanche 1500 z71. The most fun truck I ever had. It's a hobby fixing stuff on it. The rust is common hiding behind the plastic cladding. Get it taken care of soon. Yes it's a non-magnetic tailgate lol. I was surprised too but apparently its plastic too, for lightweight I guess. Bonus is it's not going to rust out. Looks good but hard to say just how well it was cared for. Change ALL the fluids! Front diff, transmission, transfer case, rear end. And I bet the brake lines are pretty rustic. Have fun, I would 🤟
Dang I'd buy that. Trucks are at a premium up here 🇨🇦. Honestly it was going to be a lot of money fixing her up but she was pretty sweet. Lots of potential. Good channel btw
Oil probably needs to be changed, bet it's very thin. My pressure sits just below 40psi at idle and just about 60psi when driving. I get about 9.5mpg loaded or not.

Yeah I need to check on it. It shoots up Quick under throttle but bottoms out at warm idle
