It’s worth noting you can move at a crawl speed while guarding and and while doing so you will regain stamina slowly, while you will not regain stamina while guarding standing still. So it’s almost always worth crawling around slowly to make sure you keep your stamina from dropping too low, and keep yourself facing any incoming threats.
After the intro I somewhat expected the "Hey guys this is Gaijin Hunter what follows is my weapon tutorial for Monster Hunter Generations" with Valstrax
You don't actually need to sheathe your weapon if you want to sharpen - you just need to use the whetstone from the radial menu instead of the horizontal one.
Whetstones are the default upward option in the first circle so it's easy to learn and remember, even without deliberately setting up your radial. Definitely recommend.
@@SirGameGuyAnon0mos I know SnS can use a Whetstone with zL+Y while unsheathed, so I'm not sure why every other weapon can't. It's not like zL on its own does anything - it's the Silkbind button.
This is why when you're far away, dashing is very often a good decision, because you can block cancel any incoming attack, or, if you're not in danger, hit the dash attack
Gaijin Hunter I've been around since the days without voiceover. Thank you so much for your tutorials over the years! You've made countless people better hunters! :)
Small correction - unlike in past games, you can do the larger back hop more than once in the 3-hop sequence, just not twice in a row. So you can do large back hop->small hop->large back hop. With Evade Extender this gives INSANE distance. Similar to wide sweep in the 3-poke combo, where you can do sweep->poke->sweep (just not 2 sweeps in a row).
I was really surprised that he didn't mention evade extender as a useful skill. The increasing in evade distance is almost comical and I love mixing blocking stuff with just quickly getting out of the way. Is evade lancing still a thing? Makes me almost feel like I'm playing Bloodborne 😂
It just clicked on me when he said that hearing the sound of the blocking would make me know when the monster actually hits you. Been playing a whole lot of MH and just now noticed that lol
This is a great introductory lance tutorial! Love how you don't shame styles of play that new players are likely to use. One small note that I don't see others pointing out is that new to Rise you *can* actually do two long backsteps now as long as they are the first and third hops in your chain.
I feel like I'm watching the tutorial from GU but it's Rise, Gaijin you have always been my go to youtuber for guide mainly due to your voice and the feel of the music. Always love it.
As someone for whom Lance is a 3rd or 4th choice weapon you've convinced me to put a LOT more time into Lance. There's stuff in here I had no idea existed!
A few things I want to add as a lance veteran: 1. After the guard dash, if you press A to use the leaping thrust, this counts as move 1 in the thrust combo. This adds an alternate loop for elemental builds. 2. The jump during the dash can be used to vault over certain monsters when they're downed. This is notable because in solo play, a downed monster usually falls with it's feet towards the player. With practice, you can vault over the monster and to a reverse attack to break the back if that's something you need for a part. I know for sure this can be done on Mizutsune, because I discovered it while farming it's fins last night. 3. Be very careful using Guard Up against certain monsters, the final boss of the hub is a notable one. Many of these normally unblockable attacks (such as the beams fired by the final boss of the hub) actually hit many times in rapid succession, but when you don't block, you get sent flying and are thus only hit once due to invulnerability when airborne. HOWEVER, with Guard Up, this is removed, and the attack can hit several times in a second, erase you stamina, and result in more damage than eating the attack normally. 4. When guarding and standing still, your stamina will lot recover. However, if you move around while guarding (which is something the lance can do but many shield weapons can't) your stamina will recover. It's slower than during idle, but it can make a difference when blocking a multitude of attacks. Thanks Badger's Den for reminding me about this one.
Awesome vid, as always. I've taken to trying to get at least proficient with every melee weapon, and your guides are such a good starting point every time, thanks man. Clear, concise explanations of the basic moves, their links and the optimal playstles. Obviously it's not the be all and end all of Lance, but once I've got my head around your guide, I generally know where my preferred style is going to line with that weapon and how I want to utilise it, but your guides have made the process all fun and no gruel!
You can't do two long back hops consecutively, but you CAN do two long back hops in one three hop combo (long-short-long) which is an awesome buff to the Lance mobility that I don't see any single person on earth talks about.
Appreciate the tip Saito. Been using it since I saw your comment. Long-short-long works great against a few different monsters, like Zinogre's three claw slashes or Rathalos's cross up flyovers.
Thank you for mentioning the utility of the block sound effect showing you when a monster's attack actually hits you. I always tell people to use the lance or another weapon able to guard to better understand monster attack patterns.

Hope you enjoy your time with lance, it's not as flashy over the top, but it's a good weapon if you want to be more defensive or aggressive depending on how you plan to use it.
@@jet-blackjo2455 "por que no los dos?" lance's defensiveness is what allows it to be so aggressive. it thrives in dangerous situations just to say "nope" to any monster attacks, then answers back with any of a multitude of thrusts (and i guess sweeps now)to deliver a constant barrage of pain

Pro lance tip for Offensive Guard: -Place Large Bomb -unsheathed Guard -backhop -guard thrust bomb -Immediately use either Anchor Rage or Spiral Thrust This triggers Both Offensive Guard & your silkbind buff And you counter attack with said buffs. With Anchor Rage(and no guard) Large Bombs give red buff And Mega Bombs give orange buff. Extra tip: You can move while guarding. It’s very slow, but it also recovers stamina while guarding, so you don’t have to worry as much about stamina. Of course, this is only ever useful when guarding for an extended period of time, which should probably be done as little as possible.
Hey another Lance main here to help you, You forgot to mention that after blocking a strong hit, if you get into that idle animation where you are been pushed, you can convert it into power guard, which means you press B after been pushed (no knocked back, just pushed) and you can go from there to 3 options, one of them is the charge (X+A), so you are always on the monster tail even if you couldnt block it fully . also, I dont suggest using guard trust for waking up a monster, id suggest the swipe move, even if you get propulsed by the explosion its so easy to get back right in the action with the wirebug recover, I'd say the 250 dmg youll get from a swipe charge on a sleeping monster is more worth than a 60 hit from a guard trust. Great Tutorial as always, this game is so complexe it's hard to know everything right away. :D
Thank you very much for another great video! I am going to use your tutorials to master all weapons. That way I think I am getting the most out of the game, keeping tinkering new loadouts and mastering any situation.
Another great video. I have always found your presentation style easy to follow and very informative. I know you work hard at this and it is appreciated. Thanks
As a dedicated Lance main, Lance is a blast to use. plus the switch skill that you unlock later in the game makes you feel like a badass charging through attacks and slapping monsters with your shield XD
@@Dawleyllama awesome :D I'm currently using GL, so hopefully it won't be too painful to change the playstyle, and maybe i can use elemental/ status weapons :D
@@SavarahDTyl From my own experience, it is difficult to go from Lance to Gunlance. Too often I think I am playing Lance and will try a move that Gunlance does not have. Maybe rough for Gunlance to Lance. Not 100% sure. But still give it a shot!
My 2 cents as a lance main.. Guard thrust helps you regain a small amount of stamina and gains monsters attention (Similar to bull fighting). Also ending thrust for dash attack could be executed in reverse direction, leading into a "backward swipe". Great tutorial and refresher video nonetheless.
Per second? Yes it does big damage but does its dps hold up? Also... the joy of lance is quick precise attacks. The wide sweep when charged is powerful, but less precise to aim. I think on the dummy is may outdps but take a monster like rajang when enraged, and it just isn't practical. I may be wrong but thats my speculation. Be nice to me. Lol
@@Gadsmarr It definitely isn't something that you can do the entire hunt, but if you are using anchor rage rather than the other skill, it's the best option on a downed monster assuming you can hit the weakspot. The charged widesweep does about as much damage as all three pokes in about the same time as two pokes without as much repositioning.
@@Gadsmarr Nah, the sweep is still practical. Of course it's not very spamable like our traditional combos but is nonetheless important to get used to. Tbh it took me awhile to warm up to the sweep but once I got used to it, it was very worth it. Especially with correct positioning and monster knowledge
I love that you used the set I build first thing in rise in your thumbnail. I fall in love with lance in this game not only due to the design but also wirebug arts
Been looking forward for this for a while. Twin Vine was a move I never quite understood and was the only thing that kinda stumped me with Rise Lance. May actually use that move a bit more often now.
Late to the rise party, but despite what I heard people say, the lance is absolutely fantastic. In the video you mention how there are 2 things you can do after you finish a 3 hit combo, that being evading or countering, but from my experience, the best thing to do a backwards guard advance and then do a jumping poke. It takes a bit longer than an evade, but the damage output is clearly higher, and you also have the benefit of being a bit more precise with your hits, since you can slightly change your direction. I over utilize this combo like crazy. And yea, funny thing, the guard advance can be used in all 4 directions. Who woulda guessed?! Well... Me, I guess... Anyways I know this is all known information, but I love the lance, and I felt like sharing my favorite strategy with the weapon, so yea.
It's worth mentioning that if you use the radial menu for items you can sharpen without putting away your weapon first. Very helpful for the big weapons
Lance is a highly underrated weapon and is probably my favorite in Rise. Perfect guarding super attacks is so satisfying and that shield dash switch skill is so chunky. Just be warned that if you lance for too long, you’ll feel naked without a shield when you use other weapons.
Lance, is probably one of the best weapon to learn the move sets of most, if not all monsters. Lance has been my primary weapon of choice since MH Freedom and I love how much it has evolved ever since.
Loving the lance tweaks they did from MHW to Rise. The silkbind skills give great movement options to keep up the pressure in multiplayer. Can't think of all the times in the past where you would exhaust stamina to reposition only for the monster to jump at someone else.
As you say, Guard Dash is so bloody handy, and I've noticed it almost always is a 360 guard as well. So often have I overshot somehow and guard dashed backwards into my attacking target to come out totally unscathed. And since the guard is active from frame 1 it's an insane clutch defensive move. Everybody look forward to the advanced tutorial where it's discussed, I bet it's gonna be great info! ^^
First guide for mh rise. Hooray! Gaijinhunter videos are always superior to any mh youtuber in my opinion. I still think that his 4u tutorials aged well for veterans/new players even now. p.s waiting for Etiquette for Rise =^__^=
Fun fact: I was playing MH4U in my 3DS while watching/hearing this video since I left my Switch in my house and I am at my gf's place where I lend her my 3DS with MH4U and other stuff. BTW I noticed at the same time how painfull it was to get skills from armor in the past, I played casually with all I had from years ago but man... World and Rise seriously gave us a huge improvement on that aspect
shield dash imo is the bread and butter connection in between combos, since it guards you during the animation and you can transition seamlessly into another attack, if you’re still in danger you’ll still be in the guard stance after the motion is over, or you can chain it with another step. Another important fact about the shield dash is that it procs offensive guard pretty easily, reposition as much as possible with shield dash can give you good coverage of the skill since you’ll constantly proc offensive guard.
Let me get this straight: You comment something that is unrelated to the fact that I have two DANGEROUSLY DASHING girlfriends? Considering that I am the unprettiest UA-camr ever, having two hot girlfriends is really incredible. Yet you did not mention that at all. I am quite disappointed, dear pz
I wish the in-game weapon control guides were more informative. Thanks for the great video! Edit: I've actually found the guard poke quite useful. I've gotten pretty decent damage numbers out of it and when aimed at the head, it can sometimes interrupt a monster's attack and do a KO.
I’m not sure if you were saving it for the next video, but you can actually wirebug into a lance charge. I’ve only done it by accident, but I think it has to do w/ holding ZR as you land. Great for preserving momentum and getting up to speed quick when pursuing monsters.
One thing not mentioned during the Dash Attack part is that you can press ZR to cancel it into a Guard. This let's the Dash Attack be safe in case the monster starts attacking after you start it.
Constitution is also a great skill for Lancers (especially those without Guard for them Anchor Rage buffs), as it reduces the stamina loss when guarding (or evading, if you're into Evade Lancing) Also, a note about Power Guard: It actually reduces the damage blocked by 10%. Normally, the Lance blocks 80%-100% of the damage based on how much knockback you take (more knockback = more chip damage), while Power Guard reduces that to 70%-90%. The guard power doesn't get any stronger, so if you take large knockback in standard guard (80%), you're taking large chip damage in Power Guard (70%)
great tutorial. As a lance main, guard up >>> guard in almost every situation. The amount of chip damage from some hr monsters makes the use of guard up lv3 almost mandatory if like me you never want to sheathe a weapon to heal during a quest. also the ability of guarding any attack is really cool in many situations and greatly increases dps against some monsters. On the other hand, guard only decreases stamina depletion when guarding and knockback. Sure it's a good thing to have but not as game changing as the effects of guard up.
Quick Sheath is super nice for knockout build. Use a switch skill not covered here, shield charge, in your loadout. Then you can regular wirebug at the monsters face and press ZR to shield bash, and transition into to two more shield hits when you touch the ground. Closes gaps, doesn't burn up stamina like grounded shield charge, lets you fill in the gap when twin vines isn't active.
Another thing about power guard is that is also doesn't drain stamina when hit and actually stops it from decreasing when you do, making it very good for guarding multi-hit attacks that could normally drain your stamina and force you to eat a hit.
Though you shouldn't over-rely on it for multi-hits. While your stamina doesn't go down, your HEALTH will. Even small knockback attacks which the Lance usually takes no chip damage from will deal 10% damage in Power Guard, while large knockback attacks deal 30% damage instead of the usual 20%.
Lance is my first love in World. Then I moved onto S&S in Iceborn and am now trying Greatsword in Rise. While it took some time to get used to compared to almost every other weapon, I feel as if I was playing on easy mode with the lance. I love guard dash and never really see the need for normal hops. After watching this, I'm tempted to go back.
I picked up this weapon inbetween the end of World/Iceborne and the release of Rise and after a short while of bumbling around and learning things bit by bit its now just my most used weapon, even passing the Greatsword as my most used and by a wide margin too, its just so much fun.

Another great video. I have always found your presentation style easy to follow and very informative. I know you work hard at this and it is appreciated. Thanks
Miss having seeing this around. Glad to see these will be out
Yes!!! Finally, I was waiting for this thank you!!
You made the weapon look more fun than i thought it'd be, def gunna give it a shot now :)
I'm surprised you didn't mention wide sweep-thrust-wide sweep which is the most damaging lance combo without wirebugs
I fall in love with lance in this game not only due to the design but also wirebug arts
gaijin hunter and lance in hand. love seeing it.
Been looking forward for this for a while. Twin Vine was a move I never quite understood and was the only thing that kinda stumped me with Rise Lance. May actually use that move a bit more often now.
I absolutely can’t wait for the switch skills and other silkbind attacks guide, hope it comes ASAP!
I *really* got into lance in World and I havent touched it in Rise so this was a great refresher! I'm probably gonna go make a set right now
i dont even use lance, but your tutorial videos are really entertaining. thanks for making new ones!
Seems like a cool weapon. Rise has me trying new weapons out wayyy more than past MH games. Loving it!
Nothing beats the Lance!
Thank you for taking the time to make this dude! 😁
Nice!!! I feel nostalgia watching this video is like MH4U weapon tutorial..
im loving the lance in rise. the silkbind counter is amazing!!
Love the guard advance + a combo with elemental o status
I see, your a Hunter of culture as well.
Great video gaijin. Can't wait for the DB tutorial
Finally Gaijin starts making weapon tutorials for Rise, I've been waiting for it
Wow I was looking yesterday to start playing Lance. You the man gaijin
Well i have to be first for this, as a Lance main....
@@AxxLAfriku tf?
@@AxxLAfriku I'd watch your content but I don't want to lose braincells
as the *only* lance main...
@@Weird_dude265 Not the only lance main, you rude chap.
I was waiting for this!
Been waiting for gaijin to start doing weapon tutorials for MH Rise. Thank you!
I wish the in-game weapon control guides were more informative. Thanks for the great video!
Edit: I've actually found the guard poke quite useful. I've gotten pretty decent damage numbers out of it and when aimed at the head, it can sometimes interrupt a monster's attack and do a KO.
Ahhh this is the tutorials series I was waiting for
I’m not sure if you were saving it for the next video, but you can actually wirebug into a lance charge. I’ve only done it by accident, but I think it has to do w/ holding ZR as you land. Great for preserving momentum and getting up to speed quick when pursuing monsters.
Just hit the guard button anytime your in the air and you'll go into the charge.
One thing not mentioned during the Dash Attack part is that you can press ZR to cancel it into a Guard. This let's the Dash Attack be safe in case the monster starts attacking after you start it.
Constitution is also a great skill for Lancers (especially those without Guard for them Anchor Rage buffs), as it reduces the stamina loss when guarding (or evading, if you're into Evade Lancing)
Also, a note about Power Guard: It actually reduces the damage blocked by 10%.
The simplicity that lance had is now gone and more complicated, and I love it😄
Nice video. Detailed and on point.
great tutorial.
I absolutely love the new format.
Just went back to lance main after being CB main since 4u love it here
Hoping for a tutorial where gaijin says, "Once you _____, the fun begins!"
Valor style intensified
Goat screams too
Valor charge blade vibes here
Spinning axe mode
Time to give Lance a try! Thank you for your work :)
Here's a Lance Tip: If you are guarding, keep moving while doing so, this will make you regen stamina. This is useful for guarding multiple attacks.
Lance is my first love in World. Then I moved onto S&S in Iceborn and am now trying Greatsword in Rise. While it took some time to get used to compared to almost every other weapon, I feel as if I was playing on easy mode with the lance. I love guard dash and never really see the need for normal hops. After watching this, I'm tempted to go back.
i have been waiting for this....but mostly the next video on lance
I picked up this weapon inbetween the end of World/Iceborne and the release of Rise and after a short while of bumbling around and learning things bit by bit its now just my most used weapon, even passing the Greatsword as my most used and by a wide margin too, its just so much fun.
The music is SOOOOOO relaxing...
The Poke village theme gives all the good feels.
dude this weapon is so fun, thx for the recommendation
