    We’ve been to London twice and would go every year given the chance! We’ve also been pretty successful at doing London on a budget by booking accommodations that have a small kitchenette allowing us to cook most of our breakfasts before heading out for our day. We also LOVE going to Sainbury’s grocery store for lunch on the go-often we take it to a nearby park. For about 5 pounds we got sandwiches, chips (crisps), and a drink. They have yogurts, salads, fruit...we loved it!

    In 8 weeks in London, we only ate one meal at a restaurant and it was expensive and poor service. We preferred to spend our budget on a nice hotel room and admission fees and save money on food. Breakfast at the hotel was a good deal and set us up for the day; we would just snack mid-day, then after all the “sites” closed around 5:00, we’d head back to the hotel and either get a pub dinner or food at a grocery store. After 7-8 hours of walking around and touring, we were ready to relax in the evenings! An excellent sandwich shop in our neighborhood reduced all their sandwiches to 50% price at the end of the day, and we could buy a couple of beers or a bottle of wine at the liquor store next door. Fresh fruit from the little neighborhood grocery store was dessert. Eating this way was also healthier than sitting down to a restaurant meal. Younger people might not like this plan but it worked for us!

    I'm usually more comfortable buying food at a market (if prices are displayed clearly) & supermarkets.
    sainsbury, M&S (Marks & Spencer), Poundland, etc. all have reduce price at their fresh food section - you can get sandwiches, salads, sushi , tacos for half the price (because the of 'sell untill' date is due).
    Local Supermarkets in general is always fun to brows and get snacks.

    Don't overlook things like Pret or M&S delis. If you're in a hotel or B&B, go to M&S and you can get salads and soups to go.

      Win the lottery! London property is some of the most expensive in the world. The process is simple. You find a flat/house you like through an estate agent normally and say you'd like to offer x for it. The asking price will be shown. If the seller accepts you find a solicitor that deals in property purchases (conveyancing) and they'll do all the legalities and searches required.

    • @Hisdelhiinlondon
      @Hisdelhiinlondon 7 років тому

      'win the lottery' actually didn't get you.

    • @oldproji
      @oldproji 6 років тому

      Firstly, get a good solicitor. Secondly, decide where you want to invest and then visit the area. Not all areas in the UK are equal. If you are looking to invest in London be prepared to have very deep pockets. Prices around Southwark/Borough Market start at around £750,000 and average at £2.6 million along South Bank. Good luck with your investment.

    Fantastic tips! London may not be cheap generally, but the beer in pubs is way less than what we're used to paying here. Jess, do you know if bars and restaurants in London run Happy Hour all week? Or is it usually only a weekday deal?

    • @loveandlondon
      @loveandlondon  7 років тому

      Ah I always hear people complaining about the price of beer here so that's interesting to hear Rob. As for happy hour it completely depends on the place-- some do it on the weekdays only and some do it all week.

    Hi Jess-
    Thanks for all the informative videos you have about London. I have a question for you. I will be in London in a few days and I have been doing my research. I will be in central London for 3 days, Paris for 2 days and Doncaster for 5 days. I realized that I will have to take the Eurostar from St. pancras to France, and when I return to London, I will have to take the train from London to Doncaster. I will also have two young kids. Do you have any suggestions for me as I am dreading the commute !

    • @loveandlondon
      @loveandlondon  6 років тому

      Hi Raffie, I love the Eurostar! Can you skip Doncaster? That’s a lot of traveling in a short amount of time. Stay in London instead!

    • @bigbadjohn10
      @bigbadjohn10 5 років тому

      I agree, Eurostar is brilliant. They even show you what speed you are doing. (186 mph). Paris is quite compact and there are plenty of cafes, with priced menus outside. With a little planning you can walk every where in the centre. Skip Doncaster and spend your time in London. Plan what you want to see, but allow time for travelling which will take you ages. Pick areas so you can walk e.g. Trafalgar Square , Whitehall Downing Street, Houses of Parliament, st James park, Buckingham palace, the mall st James palace, Pall Mall, Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square are all close to one another and the walk will give you a real feel for that part of London. Similarly the City of London or square mile (cos it is) is the historic formerly walled city. A wealth of important buildings including the Tower, Bank of England where the gold is kept ( it is not on view) would be worth research and a tiring days walk. You won't see it all. I have lived in London for nearly 70 years and still have surprises.

    I am a big "street food" fan - taco trucks in LA, street vendors that gather together around church plazas in Guadalajara, hot dog vendors in Manhattan, and like you said, the marketplaces in London! I was there in 2014 for 10 days and had stayed at an AirBNB in Whitechapel. Just a few blocks away was this massive conglomeration of street vendors in an old warehouse off of Brick Lane. I think I ate at a "real" restaurant only once, and that was actually in York! Your suggestion of sharing food with others in your party is spot on! I have a good friend in San Francisco that only orders appetizers, simply to get a taste of many things the restaurant offers!

      Bring your own bottle. It’s because of 2 things:
      Licensing laws - the restaurant may not be able to get an alcohol serving license for any reason or not be willing to pay for it.
      Religion - lots of restaurants that are owned by Muslim restaurant owners do this. They appreciate people want to drink but don’t want to serve/ sell the alcohol. Our local Indian restaurant does it for this reason.
