THEN pointed out that they were given clear orders that they ignored. And even went on to punish both him and the other guard as they were both to be held accountable for failing duty, and to add insult to injury, said their captain would face discipline too for not reigning in his men, basically insulting the man even more by saying he was incompetent and unruly by pointing out his captain's faults in training them. He literally took his pride and tore it to shreds
Technically, Damuel got off with a slap on the wrist compared to Schichikoza, which could be seen as even more of an insult since Damuel was a lower ranked noble and yet suffered a far less severe punishment due to Myne outright requesting that Damuel be shown leniency. SPOILERS: Shichikoza was ultimately executed for his actions (something that pisses off his mother). Damuel on the other hand was merely demoted and then assigned to Myne as her personal knight and retainer (which I would honestly have considered a reward, since Myne outright requested leniency for Damuel as she clearly trusted him). So while Damuel was demoted for his failure to protect Myne from Schichikoza, he was technically then rewarded for at least having tried to stand up for her by being assigned to her as her personal retainer and knight (which could also be seen as him being given a second chance to protect her to make up for his prior failure). Damuel is the kind of man you *want* as a knight, as he's a kind man who doesn't judge Myne for being of "common" birth. He merely needed to be more confident about being able to call out the actions of others regardless of rank when they crossed a line.
@@gamester512 Damuel's punishment was certainly long-term though. By resigning himself from being an independent knight as becoming the Knight Commander of Rozemyne's personal guard, he wasn't able to marry the woman he wishes to marry because his involvement with Rozemyne's rechristening as a noble is too sensitive of an information to leak for someone who is a lowly laynoble like him.
On top of that, she was granted blue robed by religious leaders as well as their king. Dude said, “you have committed both treason and blasphemy. Your ego has doomed your family’s existence. Not as nobles, but as part of the living.”
Plus there is one major thing here. In worlds like this, if you join the military, you no longer just have to follow noble etiquette, but military as well. So if you happen to disobey an order from your higher ups, you can still face punishment (possibly with some leniency), with it being guaranteed if they're of higher noble class. So even if his job was to escort a commoner, he should have darn well listened since this was an order from a higher up on both fields.
Indirectly that’s kind of the point. In older class based military your better‘s had higher ranks. Nobles would be officers, and commoners the enlisted. Ferdinand basically told him I am the highest ranking person here and I gave you a direct order. You disobeyed it, and I really don’t care what your reasons are.
In the story's world class rank overwhelms even military rank but even with that in mind Ferdinand is the brother of the arch Duke and karsted is like one step lower as the head of military and the arch dukes bodyguard
@@zekebanks7876 Karstedt is from the line of the archducal family, I believe. His father Bonifatius was an archduke candidate from the previous generation, so Ferdinand and the current Aub Ehrenfest are his cousins.

And the following episode it is noted that his family is fighting for him. I’m not sure what kind of detail they went into in the novel. Or if Ferdinand actually cared other than making an example out of him.
God what a miserable society to live in. Where guilt is determined by rank, not by deed. Even when someone is trying to do the right thing, they can only do it through exploiting the system. Ferdinand cant just say, "You hurt myne, die." He has to justify it by spelling out how he violated orders from the highest ranking officer there and spat on the wishes of the lord of the territory. Because that was the only real crime here according to this society.
So he is just using the rules that noble praised so much against him. It might be possible they don't have laws against discrimination back then so he can't use that to judge either. So he is just putting that guy in his place using the very rules that guy used against her, pretty satisfying actually.
The equivalent would be a noble ordering his servants to take good care of a new slave but instead they abused the slave cause servant is of higher status. Then the noble punished them for ignoring his order cause the noble is of higher status than a servant. See the funny part?

While this show is a bit cheesy at time to me, I still find it so fun to watch, if nothing else then for the amount of realistic events that balance out the show, it actually utilizes the politics and underlying motives of the characters with real substance, with actual consequences. It such a fun and interesting watch
I just watch it to support a fellow bookworm. I do not pay attention to any of the serious plot. Just like Myne, I'm there for the books. Nothing more, nothing less.
You should consider reading the light novel series. It's 1000x better because this series has so much complexity and in depth character development they could only put a small amount in the anime and keep the story very restricted. The LN series is told from Myne's perspective and the world building is several levels better giving vibrant descriptions of the politics, culture, and people over time. The anime basically ends where the real story began. It only covered a small part of the first 2 Parts of the story out of 5 parts. Parts 3-5 are much longer with a lot more books and the story progresses significantly.
I love how Ferdinand handled this all .. knowing the dude basically committed treason he practically tells him to give up the last of his mana to the world "teaching the plebian" how it's done before his own execution 😎 Ferdie got da sauce
When Schicikoza said "She's a plebeian", he didn't say "she" (kanojo), he said "are" which to my knowledge, is best translated as "that". Aka he said "That's a plebeian", referring to Main.
Or more accurately, "It" could be the meaning here. She isnt even a person to him, a low ranking thing. Better he was guarding a box of rations, because at least those have value in his eyes.
@@TheDman131 You have to combine the need to convey the meaning of the words, the desire for accuracy with the constraints of matching lip movements. For what they have to work with, the dub is plenty acceptable.
Still a slap on the wrist maybe be mercy for his life but to his brothers (soldier buddies) would brand him as a traitor socially meaning until the dies he would basically be looked down as a outcast
On a side note in the novel Myne was more careful here, speaking to Kardstet (someone check that spelling) on his request whilst the others were elsewhere. If she had handled it this way in the novel she would have essentially jumped off a cliff on the chance that Ferdinand or Kardstet would catch her.
Its interesting that this show is about how the nobility hierarchy is flawed and even dangerous but also shows why it was such a useful tool. Ferdinand here knew what was best because he was privy to all the information and he knew all the information because of his capability and status. Karsetedt is also told it was his Job to make sure he trained them properly. So the question then becomes what changed to turn these Axioms upside down? The answer is simple and thats the theme of this anime, Books. Once information becomes readily available to everyone then the masses can rule themselves.
Masses can't rule themselfs. Never it was. You need knowledge, intelligence, ambition, status, wisdom, charisma, even luck... People are not born equall. But should be equall before the law. Sadly with enough power and/or gold. Might makes right. It's today same as in history.
@@viperstrike0Theoretically true but we still have a "ruling class" it's just the means by which one enters or leaves has changed (less blood but arguably just as brutal).
This is not theoretical. This is how society was centuries ago. The nobles were the nobles. They were constantly scheming and conniving. And killing a commoner or injuring them, was not a crime for them. Especially in feudal Japan. To have soldiers that directly disobey, an order of a superior does show poor training.
@@aidenfurry471 Personally I’m not a big fan of subtitles. They have their own issues. First focusing on the text means you can’t focus on the action. And second the exact same problem with dubs. Sometimes the Japanese have a single word for something that doesn’t translate to English. Leaving you a little time to read the phrase before it moves to the next scene. No method is going to be perfect. The only way to do it properly would be to learn Japanese.
@@aidenfurry471 I guess it would be easier if I did it more often. I’ve only watched one series that I thought was good enough to be worth the extra effort. And it didn’t have So much action that it was a problem. The devil is a part timer. And fast moving action I’ve noticed often that the Japanese have a single word for something that doesn’t translate as a single word in English. Which means the time to read it is insufficient. That where they have the same problem as dubbing where you change the dialogue to fit. I saw a video on how the dubbing is done and it appears to be a lot of work.
I love the music it makes it feel like the world is about to crush the snobby noblemen under its weight. And as the song gets stronger and more intensity the nobles realization of doom increases until you see the look of fear and terror on his face!
I copied this in wiki and wanted to share to everyone The Japanese version of his name is "Shikikōza", which spelled backwards means "Small-Fry Knight" (雑魚騎士, zako kishi).
Best part? Shikikoza tried to use the same magic Myne would be using and failed, affecting only a small area around him leaving him barely standing. Myne then flexes on him with no issue and could've done more
Eh, that was mostly Ferdinand using him as a way for Myne to demonstrate her value to the rest of the knights, and thus nip the issue in the bud since no one will further doubt her usefulness. Shik got executed for his fuck up, so its not like the little demonstration would have even mattered on that front.
*Schicicoza:* People need to know their place in society. *Ferdinand, with 13 Uno Reverse cards and 44 Draw 4's in his hand:* ... I'm bout to end this man's whole noble family. [Inhales].....
An arrogant soldier puts him and his entire unit and to a certain extent, his commander, at risk of punishment because of his actions also describes what a soldier will face should they step out of line. Pretty good depiction
Damn, He's a Scary Dude when he needs to be. not to mention he was probably saving the guy's Life; I mean if that girl gets mad enough, she could crush his heart just by willing it.
That guy has a heart? Coulda fooled me! I think she might be able to do more now if she put her mind to it. She has seen what magic can do and that it can be controlled. You can bet that even if it's in the back of her mind, she's thinking on how to control her magic and what to use it for. I wonder is Myne in her old life played any DnD? sm
SPOILERS: The opposite, actually. IIRC, Schichikoza is actually judged to have committed such a heinous act and violation of his assigned duties during his trial/hearing that he's completely disowned by his entire family, and then I believe he is actually *EXECUTED* for what he did to Main. The other guy however, as per Main's later request that he be shown lenience (since he actually tried to stand up for and protect her) is shown much more mercy and isn't punished nearly as severely as Schichikoza is.
The series is both a freely available (but untranslated) web novel and a light novel. The web novel is really quite good, even when read through Google Translate.
for anyone wondering why Ferdinand's robes are blue: colored robes were worn by nobles to indicate which duchy they were from and knights who wore these robes more often other nobles wore robes only when inter-duchy events or going to the royal academy. Myne and Ferdinand's residence and setting in the anime is the Ehrenfest duchy. Ehrenfest robes are symbolized by yellow robes like the knights in this scene but only Ferdinand is wearing blue. The blue robes that Ferdinand use he got when he participating in a betting match against a higher duchy that duchy's wore blue on their robes. Ferdinand was able to defeat the knight students from a higher duchy with a cunning scheme and get the cloak from those duchy and until now the person who owns the cloak still considers Ferdinand as a rival and wants to fight again to get the robe. It wasn't just a robe because the robes of the nobles contained magical protection so such robes were very precious to the nobles and the robes is and the robe was actually a betrothed gift from the fiancé of the man Ferdinand defeated
He's not even a acknowledged to be a noble before this since he's a blue priest. He only has noble blood. And since those blue priests in the temple sometimes got the gray robe priestess pregnant, most of those in orphanage also had noble blood. The difference between him and the orphans was that he had family who supports him by paying some considerable sums. Because of the current situation though, he was taken back from the temple and enters the noble society
That's the power of patronage, when someone is endorsed they become as valued as the one who gave it to them, so a command from them is as valid as from the patron, disobey or refuse is as bad as refusing the patron. Not sure of how high his rank was, but a direct order from a lord to a knight being refused is enough to be executed.
I think Ferdinand wanted to give justice based on the offense against the apprentice. However, he knew that couldn't be done due to her "plebian" status. However, he did know how to turn their own rank based defense against them given his own superior status and rank.
at least he didn't go ape shit and slit the dude's throat. I mean think about it, she is so damn powerful that he is basically bending over backwards to see that she stays close to him so he can watch over her. look what he has done so far. if she were killed it would have been for nothing. he strikes me as a man not to cross, and someone how gets his way without caring over much who he steps on.
Green hair is executed for 1. Dissent. And 2. Insubordination. A few other things too. But those are the reasons for his execution. I loved the next scene where Ferdinand makes green hair use the staff to rejuvenate the land he passes out after the opening sentence and has a millimeter of grass at his feet... its impressive to all of them except myne karstedt and Ferdinand. Then myne picks up the staff and not only does she complete the prayer... the weather gets super charged with mana she grows knee high grass in seconds then flowers start blooming when ferdinand says the land is rejuvenated... "maybe a bit too much."
The green head guy is one of the ones that was called back from the church. He was a blue roped priest before the perch which basically means he's one of the problematic models that the family wants to hide and pretend they don't exist or he's one of the nobles that has so little mana that the family consider him a waste of space
Big spoiler alert: Myne then becomes a noble herself. One her guards is a mednoble, Angelica, a similar in rank with the green head, but her mana capacity, fight skills and moral are immensity better, even when she was only an apprentice, proving the mediocrity of him. Also, she would never let someone she’s in charge get harmed like that. That is the number one rule of knights and you’re considered scum if you don’t follow it.
Yeah Bookworm is up there because even though our mc here is infact op she's squish wizard op so she cant just punch through obstacles like a lot of other isekai protags. Plus even though she is op in some departments her lack of people skills and experience means she screws herself over sometimes, especially when it comes to her not realizing the full impact of her inovations.
Some context here: Ferdinand does not show emotion. When he saw what happened to Myne he was VISIBLY upset, so much so it made the vice commander nervous. The only reason Damuel didn't get beheaded was because he eventually relented and confessed.
The thing what always bugged my head about this situation is the fact that every shoulder should at least know there why was a blue roped priestess brought there, even if she's a little girl. One would think that a logically thinking sholder would know that if a little girl was brought there, she must be there for a REASON, since the blue roped priests are supposed to recover the land's mana. He should've known it, yet just because she's a" peasant" he wanted to gouge out her eyes. When she's the person who's only job is to restore the land's mana. Meaning, this soldier VILLINGLY JEOPARDIZED THE SUCCESS OF THE MISSION JUST BECAUSE OF THE RANKS. It always bugged my head that no one pointed this out.
Jezz class based society must blow to live in. It's not a matter of a man hurt this little girl, he basically has to spell out of disgusting his actions were to the entire company to get through Shikikoze's thick skull how bad he screwed up. Had it been literally anyone else reprimanding them, Shikikoze likey would have gotten off Scott free.
No, Ferdinand would have asked Mayne what happened and the green haired idot would have still been executed. Ferdinand did this to be a lessen to all the Knights about duty and reminding them that they serve to protect the land and the people that dwell in it.
Even rank aside there's a high. Chance Ferdinand could body all of those knights solo if he didn't hold back. To disobey his direct order was beyond dumb.

Shicicoza is executed for his insolence, his family carries personal shame, even if the rumor is then spread that he died as a hero.

@@xxx_jim_the_reaper_xxx yes. But they asked. It was actually a simpler situation than it seemed. He was told to protect, he didn't. When your superior tells you to "keep someone/-thing safe" and you then activly hurt/damage/destroy it because of selfish reasons, that's beyond insubordination, that's straight up treason.
That face of Shikza is truly a sight. The feeling of impending doom over this one slip up is so apparent. He knows the punishment for going against the word of the Aub of Ehrenfest, and yet, he cannot do anything to fix his mistake.
I can imagine Ferdinand quoting Thrawn himself unintentionally in conversarion with Kalrsted... 😅 F: "Do you know what the difference is between an error and a mistake?" K: "Uhm, no sir. What is it?" F: "An error only becomes a mistake once you refuse to correct it."
That he tried to justify his actions by being a noble, and her being "just a commoner" is a moot point, since he was given a direct order by his superior. When you're given an order to protect someone, their position relative to you doesn't matter. You do as you're told, and protect them as if they're the most important person in the world. Failure to do so shows not only that you're incapable of following orders, but also that you're not fit to guard anyone, especially someone of a higher rank, like your lord.
Yup and this is why there are basically no true nobility systems still in place in most of the world. I think there are 7 or 8 true monarchies left in the world, the rest are constitutional matriarchies like The UK and Japan. Nobles in those countries don't usually have any real power, though it does depend on the country. Fun fact. Germany's monarchy was taken down with a more or less peaceful cue. The royal family survived and have living decedents that are basically celebrities now.
The subject is brought up shortly after the scene. In this world nobles actually serve a purpose. Without their mana, the land doesn’t survive properly. They are also strong enough due to magic to easily defend themselves from the peasants. On earth nobles aren’t special.
I have neglected continuing this series (Light Novel). I remember this part and my blood boiled over with what they did with Myne. I think I need to continue reading this. (Looking at my book shelf, I think I only ended getting Part 4, Volume 1.... Tsk!)

In older class based military your better‘s had higher ranks. Nobles would be officers, and commoners the enlisted. Ferdinand basically told him I am the highest ranking person here and I gave you a direct order. You disobeyed it, and I really don’t care what your reasons are.
It was merely a cleansing of the royal gene pool.

I agree!
Umm, unless it's a common theme. Here, all I see is him showing the guy the irony that he disobey his superior despite all that talk about ranks.
So he is just using the rules that noble praised so much against him. It might be possible they don't have laws against discrimination back then so he can't use that to judge either. So he is just putting that guy in his place using the very rules that guy used against her, pretty satisfying actually.
You just see things in a negative light too much
The equivalent would be a noble ordering his servants to take good care of a new slave but instead they abused the slave cause servant is of higher status. Then the noble punished them for ignoring his order cause the noble is of higher status than a servant. See the funny part?

I recommend giving the light novels a go. The anime left out a huge amount of world building and is often more serious.

Masses can't rule themselfs. Never it was. You need knowledge, intelligence, ambition, status, wisdom, charisma, even luck...

The only way to do it properly would be to learn Japanese.

for anyone wondering why Ferdinand's robes are blue: colored robes were worn by nobles to indicate which duchy they were from and knights who wore these robes more often other nobles wore robes only when inter-duchy events or going to the royal academy.
You are full right about that, and i hope to see him later, even if it has to be season 5 or later
Schicikoza is a noble just because his parents are one. He doesn't have any achievement worthy of a noble
Yeah thats basically how nobility works
He's not even a acknowledged to be a noble before this since he's a blue priest. He only has noble blood. And since those blue priests in the temple sometimes got the gray robe priestess pregnant, most of those in orphanage also had noble blood. The difference between him and the orphans was that he had family who supports him by paying some considerable sums. Because of the current situation though, he was taken back from the temple and enters the noble society
Actually the music fits with that guy.

On earth nobles aren’t special.

reminder that if myne was angry enough, she could have exploded their insides in a matter of milliseconds form her mana control alone, and green haired mc dumbass decided to try and torture her when he was given the strict order of protecting her.... from a tree..... that was too far away to be a threat.... he literally had to stand thee and do nothing, and he would have done the mission correctly.
i had watched it until the end and learned alot thanks master
