- OSRS Shadow banning is " blocking or partially blocking a user or their content from an online community such that it will not be readily apparent to the user that they have been banned". This is a technique used in a lot of online websites, forums, and games. It seems like recently theres been quite a few rumors floating around that a shadow ban system exists in RuneScape as well, more specifically at the duel arena.

Tyler Randall because the code could be set up to just find reported RWT’ers and add a shadow ban. Doesn’t have to be manual
Removing someone from a company does not guarantee that they don't have access to things anymore, even if everyone does their due diligence and disables all their accounts. I did a consultation with a company that kept having confidential information leaked, they were pretty sure it was a current employee and were getting ready to lawyer up. After a couple of weeks we eventually found a raspberry pi under the floor, which we tracked to a disgruntled ex employee who admitted he put it there when he was confident he was about to be fired.
If Reach was capable of getting things in to the game just by not loudly announcing them (this should be next to impossible when you're working with a team), it's entirely possible that an automated or remotely controlled system would exist and jagex would be none the wiser.

During that year where they discussed shadowbanning at Jagex, they were losing members and significantly limited themselves to how many people they would ban per month. It would make sense for them to resort to tactics like this.

A 1 in 32 chance? The result of another iteration is not affected by the outcome of the previous. If you lose 1000 games in a row, the chances of you winning or losing the next are exactly the same as if you had won 1000 games in a row. I think these calculations might be influenced a little by gamblers fallacy.
Lmfao no that's no how statistics work. The odds of flipping a coin and getting heads is 50%. The odds of flipping a coin twice AND getting heads twice is 50% x 50% = 25%
The previous events dont effect the likelyhood of the next event but that doesnt change the statistical probability of the sequence of events you are experiencing.
So if you get heads on one coin then there is a 50% chance you get heads on the next coin, but getting heads twice on two consecutive coin flips is still only 25%. It doesnt effect the likelyhood of the next event but that doesnt make the series of events you are experiencing any less improbable.

Gambler's fallacy gonna getcha. Pet is 1/3k so you always feel like you're getting closer to getting it with each kill. But it was 1/3k this kill, it's 1/3k next kill and still 1/3k 3k kills later. But line up 3k accounts and do one kill on each and it's pretty likely one of them gets a 1 kc pet.

I'm curious if there is shadowbanning in pvp as well?
My experience at the duel arena is positive, and it seems to be even odds for the most part. But I can chance pkers 10 to 1, and end up dying to pidswaps 6x in a single 5 hours, and pid swapping on my special attack 4x in the same 5 hours, to my opponents pid.
I can go an entire night hitting 0's on a good chance, but die on the first chance I give.
I have a few friends with similar stories, and even they'll admit my accounts rng is almost completely irrelevant.

You forgot to mention that if Jagex can give you an "invisible +7 woodcutting boost" in the woodcutting guild. They are MORE than capable of giving players a perm -10 accuracy across all styles without anyone noticing.
To be honest I believe Mat K said that "something might of happened" is to actually ward off duel arena botters and scammers.

A major streamer that is also a ironman named "bond waster" went 172 kc dry at ToB and recently got his first drop so no, I doubt a normal pvmer with no history of botting or selling/buying gold would be shadow banned.

i think its less to do with rng and more to do with an invisible decrees to their stats like for example making their att, str, and def 50 instead of 99

Of course they do. If you have physical access to the server, you are that server's god. They can do literally anything they want, the only question would be how hard it would be to do it.
They technically have the ability to change anything on anyone's account that they want. Whether the be under the surface with things such as RNG, or on surface things such as levels/appearance.
I've gone on a 10 loss streak. I bounced back up right after though with a 7 win streak. the dueling arena gives and takes. a truly amazing place for some and devastating for others. be safe everyone and wise.

On the opposite side of this, I 100% think that Jagex gives certain players better RNG if they think it's good for the community growth. For example, Sparc Mac at the duel arena. He's a trusted individual, and would never RWT. I'm confident it would be beneficial to the growth of the osrs community for Sparc Mac to stay rich and make insane clips (this is speculation, no evidence)
There is actually a shadow ban system, hence why rwters dont use the same accounts at duel arena.

I've always been unlucky at pvm, pvp, staking, just basicly everything I do in rs. On the other hand, that unluckyness only began after winning like 80b on a different account staking. I've always wondered if something like this was in game

Even if shadow bans aren't in game for duel arena - this whole conversation concludes to me that RNG is 100% account based. This means that if you have bad pet luck or rng at the duel arena then trying another account may yield different results, but it would be impossible to test unfortunately. And there are too many variables like if they applied shadow bans to IP addresses rather than account based.

theres no way to link my rs acc to me here so ill admit: i RWT quite often, almost every pay period i spent like $5 and get myself 20m. this will cover my bond and 2 weeks worth of training. i have never won anything good off the treasure hunter keys in rs3, or any duel in the arena and have always avoided it because even when i should win i still lose. this is prob why, they know what im doing lol

I have an account that I let someone else use back in 2002, that person acted its age and got it perm muted, the account wasn't anything important to me, but that person was not allowed on any of my accounts anymore, and I've actually not shared any of my accounts with anyone ever since. After the conversion to rs2, the perm mute disappeared. Not sure why, but I no longer had the perm mute in that account's status page, and it appeared to be able to talk on its screen, no one else could see what it was saying, essentially a shadow ban. This is how mutes work to this day in osrs I believe. on rs3 eventually it started telling me that "your account is muted" on login, even though the account status page shows it in good standing, and on osrs it still has the shadow ban behavior
My dry-streak: I spent 10 hours last night dry going for my Dragon Defender. I started at Bronze and got Rune like 2 hours in, but 8 hours with no dragon defender, but I got a left shield half and I made a friend along the way I wouldn't have if it didn't take me so long. :) I'm happy with RNG!
Please tell me you're aware the dragon defender is obtained through the basement section right? I'll be laughing at you forever if you went 10 hours at the top floor area.

@@sonhegdeog7454 Now that im looking I did say it wrong. Gotta edit that, even when they changed the odds in x and y it still is lower than 1/1024. A shiny pokemon had a 1/8192 gens 2 through 5, gen 6 they halfed the odds to 1/4081.
You can test this by making 2 accounts with the exact same stats
one account with 0 strikes and the other close to getting banned
And making them fight in the duel arena

@@forexalised9053 if you fight them 1000 times it should eventually start to roughly align to a 50/50 split on win/loss ratio if rng is the same. so this is factually wrong.

Camped them for a month. Keep in mind this was around release, and it took like 3 minutes to get one kill.

I had 2 accounts at duel arena with very similar names 1 account was level 55 with 80 range and 70 hp. doing knife stakes after the first stake I lost on that account so I logged into my other account on top of that account which was maxed with 99 range and 99hp. Staking the same person who had 78 range with 74hp (yes I know you can all cus me out for scamming but it’s just my experience). I staked him 6 times on my maxed pure and lost 6 times in a row until he noticed. Now tell me shadow bans don’t exist? After this I have never staked again.

I've had this same theory, however I feel like rng bans exist on people's account that have been temp banned. I had insane rng before recieving a 2 day ban for mouse recording. Ever since then I got 3 to 4 times dry on every drop. However my luck with dragon spears is insane. Idk why I can hit a 1 in 5k chance twice in 1 task but will go 4 tasks dry on a 1 in 512. Its the ultimate troll.

Steve French as Ty said above me, you have to look at it mathematically. The chance of you losing 16 times in a row is 1/2^16, or 1 in 65536. That means that an average 65,536 sets of 16 games would have to be played for one to result in a complete loss. Do you really think this amount of duels haven’t been played in the duel arena since OSRS’s beginning?

In the past I staked like 10hrs+ a day losing streaks of 10-14 happened like once every 1 or 2 days. Rs3 polypore it rarely happens...
Coin flipping is actually statistics and probability. Its (½)^10. So really winning once then puts your odds at 1 of 4, the 1 of 8, 1 of 16, etc, etc. The more you do it the less of a chance you have until you lose again.
Although translating this into the duel arena is not like flipping a coin. You may have a 50/50 shot with the same stats and equipment. But if you win or not is based on the Runescape combat system. They strived to make it as fair as possible, but I bet there are ways of fudging it.
People severely misunderstand probability. Losing 10 in a row has a 1/1024 chance... but do you know what else has a 1/1024 chance? Literally every single possible outcome of 10 duels... which is how you get that number. That is just as likely to happen as any particular distribution of wins/losses in a particular order.
Probability is on an individual basis. The only reason it is more likely for you to have a mix of wins and losses is because there are more combinations of such that can happen; each of those individual possibilities is no more likely to happen than any other however.
I totally believe that there is a shadowban. It is common practice in social media, so why wouldn't it be as well on a game. I run instagram accounts with over 1million total followers and for us it is common to have an account shadowbanned after maybe following too quickly, posting content that violates guidelines, or for using the wrong hashtags. We have a website to check out if shadowbanned though. The problem with jagex is you have no way of knowing but if you are suspected I believe that it would be relevant to be able to find out somewhat, simply for the purpose of maybe skill pets etc. Those everyone should always have an equal opportunity to receive drops. In regards to staking, while I have RWT'd I do believe that a shadowban is necessary to implement against those that may abuse the system. It's a smart idea and there is absolutely no reason why jagex shouldn't use it or why they should have to tell anyone if they have implemented it. Also with the fact that it is widely used on social media, that is an illustration of how easy it can be to implement on something like this where the algorithm is a lot simpler versus a platform with a billion users.

I think this actually makes sense that he would make the same joke, even 3 months apart. It probably pops into his head when he talks about the shadow banning. Say you go to hold the door for someone. You might make the joke "hold da door" (Hodor (sp?) in game of thrones). Probably not the best example, but I'm terrible at coming up with examples. He knew that Mod Reach (I guess) would have been in charge of something like that. He knew that he sometimes did things without telling people. I think it makes a lot of sense he would make the joke, even 3 months apart. This is a pretty common thing to do. Not sure if I understood it all correctly.
I'm not saying there was or wasn't a shadow banning system. I'm only talking about the joke part.

Back on rs2 i got a 4k dry streak at metal dragons, no platelegs, plateskirt or visage.
The drop rate was not 50 50 though.
Mod reach personally thinks his methods are infallible, having personally spoken with him. The shadowbanning at arena seems real, and it seems the only variable they have to nerf is the defensive stat.
my stakes are 74 wins- 50 losses. Over all I still lost money, its not just about how many you win it's about which ones you win on and if you get greedy when you're already ahead. Even if you have 2b cash stack, if you do 1m stakes and just double until you win even if it takes 9 straight losses to lose everything by the time you earn 1B in those stakes cumulatively there was a 50% along the way you would lose it all.

lost 13 stakes ina row, then won 1 stake which got all my money back then lost another 6 cleaning me, rebuilt thru various methods just for the cycle to repeat, i used to win/loose consistantly evenly, streaks would even themselves out over time, now my win/loss statistics are around the same however i never win high stakes only low stakes, i tested it by staking a friend that returns the money every time, i could only win under 500m stakes, anything higher i always lost we tested it over 50 times the evidence was conclusive. i do not rwt and never have i peaked at 7b, never ever have i been able to recover even a 1b cash stack since. i am completly convinced i am shadow banned but i think it effects my ip adress as even other accounts have same outcomes. i tried staking on rs3 just for jokes and yeah same senario

as soon as you impliment martingales or anti-martingales for too long the game shadow bans you as realisticly its free money using this system if your capital is infinite, and taking loans ect makes it infinite technically without shadow bans the game would suffer equally as badly this is coming froma full time staker- the duel arena would 100% be removed if it wasnt for the tax sink hole system in place today

As an Ironman, ill speak to some weird rng stories, and there are some fairly funny ones on the ironscape sub reddit. Iron Aloha, streamer, went 21k kc dry on dwh, some other have been seen as high as 25k. I personally went 1k kc dry for a Bandos Chestplate, which isnt the odd part; I got FOUR goblin champion scrolls during that grind just getting kill count. Kacy still dosent have the Bloodhound pet, and Faux and Mammel went famously dry at cerb. I finished cerb at 356 kc including the pet. RNGs a bitch.
Dang I’m currently doing Lizard shamans and I’m at 2K kc right now. Aiming for that DWH but today I got shield left half and 2 dragon spears within 500 kc :/

I once asked for this actually, I would have loved it to see bots running around getting only like 10% of the amount of yew logs a normal player would get, or that they will automatically get a 2nd GE. So they can sell, but not actually trade with others, not even along GE. As soon as they start trading someone else, they will automatically get disconnected and receive a ban. I would not do a lower stat thing, because once someone knows this, he could just fight that guy at the dual arena and make money themself.
sometimes it feels like.. i have over 10k/20k k/d in pvp equals to 0.4, and what that means 8 out of 10 times i can be killed with bare hands trough pray, dosent matter.

Mod mat did some interesting things... its a much darker side that the public does not know.
shadow bans confirmed bro. We tested it with 1000 1m states and had a win/loss ratio of 35/65. About 356 wins, 644 Losses. This was with switching attack styles on a max main(which gives you a 3% edge against players not doing this) and started happening after purchasing 100m. We tested it because all of a sudden we started losing every stake. If it was 50/50 then this sample size would have closer to 500/500. I think 1000 duels is enough to remove any basic luck.

I wouldn't mind this kind of code, but if you look at some players who have some crazy RNG and seem to always get the rare drops you have to think that on RS3 and 07RS there is something against your account that is used to define how lucky you are when RNG is rolled.

While every roll is 50% every time, there are only two permutations where you win all or lose all, and over 1000 permutations where you don't, meaning if you stake 10 times a day for 2-3 years with an average of 50/50 odds, you should only expect to lose all 10 once or twice. Put in other words, given that all the permutations have an equal chance of appearing and that 1022 permutations have at least one win and loss and only 2 have exclusively wins or exclusively losses, losing all 10 stakes should be extremely rare, like once a year at best, given optimal play and 50/50 odds.
It's real at least for muting. I'm muted on my alt and I could prove it with my main but I never got a message or an email from jagex.
I never get anything on my muted accs on osrs, but my pures get pets while getting questing reqs and entire emblem sets by 2-3k revs. Hmmm

Tell me why I got tempoross pet at 67 fishing?!? I have a 10.5 year old main with 150 days on it, never once gotten a pet. Never! In fact I don't get any good drops playing on that account. I botted on it back in 2015ish and got it up to 85 runecrafting. I got a temp ban and I think that forever shadow banned me from getting anything good. My first pet ever is on a brand new botted account lol, this games a joke and it infuriates me. Just f#@*(@ing perm ban me. Don't shadow ban me and play these mind games you manipulative c#$%ks. Pretty sure Ive been shadow banned from picking up dropped items before. Ive had friends drop items next to me and they never show up. This started when I picked up a bunch of iron from somebody mining at al kharid.

I started playing osrs with an old runespcae3 account, and it was only after I got ttl 1850 that I realized that my account was permanently mutated, and before I started playing osrs I hadn't logged into the account in 2 years. In 50/50 chances there are common occurrences of 'streaks', where the coin flips on heads or tails multiple times in a row (5 to 7 out of 100 flips).
Honestly there's many variables, how hard you flip the coin, how high a long with others. I'm sure if you flipped a coin exactly the same way as you did to get the first result you could get heads or tails an infinite amount of times

I believe they also shadow ban for drops, like accounts that have been flagged before will receive worse drops than those that havent

Let's say we are the X variable
So you lose 5 times in a row to 5 different players on 50 / 50 odds
So in theory it should be
X lost to A
X lost to B
X lost to C
X lost to D
X lost to E
In that scenario you lose the stakes 50 / 50 since you are resetting the variables.
Furthermore if you consider the 0 to 99 HP with the max hit of 25 it is also more RNG to consider inside of the array of variables.
Not to mention maths has also complex patterns that are unpredictable when it is randomised.
This is why randomized doesn't really have a number only an estimate of the theoretical applied attempts.

another problem is that humans aren't so good at chance prediction, for some reason we are very good at calculating ow much money we would win mutliplying that number but predicting the chances of losing a gamble isn't really someting most people are good at.
I have evidence that jagex has put a x3-4 drop rate nerf on my account, I'm always having to go around x3 drop rate for an item 1st proof is I have x3-4 less of every boot drop compared to KC and x3-4 less of every normal slayer drop item such as whip compared to KC too, @ 97 slayer I have a lot of kills, my only spoon is 272 KC for a zerker ring......also an iron so the so called iron luck is a myth ....

Worst dry streak I had was at barrows, I hit the 2,000% threshold for the drop rate. I went 384 dry without a single barrows unique dropping before. And yes - it was with all 6 barrows brothers killed on each run.
