  • The new trailer for Gladiator 2 has been released and it’s already been ratioed on UA-cam. Let’s discuss why I think that has happened.

I thought the trailer was fine (rap music aside). However, the trailer didn't blow me away despite some solid looking fight choreography and the plot sounds like a retread of the 1st Film. Factor in the 310 Million Dollar Budget and I believe this film is going to flop.

Oh yeah for sure there's no way this film turns a profit. It's not like Gladiator is some massive franchise that brings in the masses. But they're treating it as so with this ridiculous budget...

@@kiksta Pedro Pascal feels miscast. He seems to be in everything now. I really liked him however in The Last of Us Season 1. Not sure if you’ve seen it?

@@deansal9222 He looks fine in the role to me, but yeah he's in everything now and just feels overly saturated.
I did watch The Last of Us, I thought it was decent and he was good. But I know a lot of video game purists (I haven't played the game) didn't think he suited the role. But as someone with no knowledge of his character in the game, I thought he was good.

@@kiksta that’s fair. Haha yeah I’ve beaten both games and if you’ve played and beaten the games you would likely enjoy the show more.

@@deansal9222 Fair enough. I do intend to play the first game one day. Do you think they'll kill off Pedro in season 2? Or will they drag it out to keep him in the show longer?

When I watched it, I gave it a thumb down. By then it wasn't ratioed. But I'm glad it is.
I'm very much against this sequel. It reeks of desperation to mimic the greatness of the original. It follows the basic plot, it seems: A slave became a gladiator and then seeks revenge. Pedro Pascal will die at the end, Paul will live on, and they'll set for the 3rd one. Because unless it bombed disastrously, of course they would want to continue.
The positives: The production looked great. This is gonna be the first time we'll see the naval battle in the Colosseum.
The negatives: The two Emperors are clowns. Nothing as great as Joaquin Phoenix with his tongue sticking out.
The music for the trailer is awful. But even for the movie itself, it won't be Hans Zimmer. And he really made the first one amazing. It was the music.
The casting. If they truly wanted to make a continuation of the story, Spencer Treat Clark is still young and should have been the lead here, not Paul Mescal. I admit my prejudice that I dislike Paul and Pedro in anything. I just don't like them.
Ridley Scott makes very good visuals. And his action scenes are very gripping. But by the end of the day, it still didn't save Exodus Gods and Kings, nor the 2016 Benhur (I know he didn't make Benhur, but it is the same genre). The writing is what matters.

      You make great points!
I'm still gonna watch the movie, despite all the reasons why it shouldn't exist. Ridley Scott is far more miss than hit at this point in his career. I would hate for the film to be just a shallow, action-packed film with no substance or emotion. Cause the first film was absolutely emotional, and had plenty of substance, which made the stakes of the action sequences even better!
And yes, it all comes down to the writing at the end of the day. To me, quality writing is what's most lacking in Hollywood these days...

@@kiksta Thank you for your reply. I always love to hear your thoughts. They revealed a lot from the movie, didn't they? A full 3 minutes trailer that shows the big set pieces (naval battle, rhino). And that was just the first trailer. By the end of the third trailer, we pretty much will be getting the shortened TikTok version of the movie. haha.
The writer for this was also the one who wrote Napoleon. Even Joaquin Phoenix and all of his charms didn't save that movie. But the other writer did Top Gun Maverick and The Batman, which are good. So, we'll see. Will we be getting another, "Are you not entertained?", or "I will have my revenge in this life or another.", or "Am I not merciful?"
The composer did The Martian, The Last Duel, and House of Gucci. So he worked with Ridley for a long time. But then I couldn't remember the music from any of those movies.
