    The boat looks better and better each week! Those lamps are great, such a nice gift. If you have a wish list of parts you could put it on your web site. No telling what people have lying around.

    Still trying to stop thinking about the Balsa core of our boat... Great job, thank you very much for sharing. As a native Washingtonian, I also really enjoy the small glimpses of WA stuff - like the Olympic National Park t-shirt. Wishing you happy sailing, it's pretty hot over here so if you need something cooler come sail in Sweden - it's lovely here and no tides to worry about.

    Dear Sailing Magic Carpet couple.
    👍👌👏 I'm deeply impressed again how you two power through all the difficulties and work. Especially after the unknown additional Balsa wood mold problem. Congrats for being so powerful and disciplined. I will absolutely love to see you having a little bit of fun on the water at last. You definitely deserve it (and more).
    Those oil lamps are gorgeous!
    Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
    Best regards luck and health.

    I'm a oil lamp collector. And there is one basic thing you should know about them. It refers to the wick. And it is easy to do. The shorter the wick protrudes from the burner, the less smoke it generates and the longer it lives.
    Of course, you have to find the sweet spot between bright light and as less smoke as possible. Because the length of the wick above the burner defines the brightness of the lamp - but also how much smoke it generates.

    I think the second lamp you received is called a Davy Lamp, a lamp used by miners underground as it's safe in gaseous and damp environments and is safe if tipped over. A nice find!

      If its a Sir Humphrey Davie lamp it should have a fine mesh screen that surrounds the flame to prevent the flame propagating to any explosive gas in the air..methane in the case of coalmines and coal dust.

      The Weems and Plath lamp is styled after a mining lamp. Living in Wales, we see many of the original ones still around. Even though it is not an original mining lamp, it is still very high quality with some of the same safety features (enclosed wind-proof flame, no build-up of gas, etc). What a great gift.

    Many years ago I went to a dinner party at Cecil Lange's with Lin and Larry Pardey. Being a neophyte at actually sailing, I was shocked to hear Lin call the lines and shrouds on their boat "ropes." With the benefit of a few more decades I've come to the realization that anyone who has sailed around Cape Horn the wrong way on a 30 foot boat as those folks did can call them anything they want!
    ps: Only a few of us old farts still know the difference between a ceiling and a overhead---! And modern boats don't have bulkheads--- Instead they have pop in liners.
    May the doors to Europe be open to you this summer!

    • @sietuuba
      @sietuuba 2 роки тому +1

      A-ha! I just commented on that piece of trivia elsewhere, I think I know that one. One could hang a painting on a bulkhead or the ceiling just as well although it might fall to the cabin sole off of the nail when heeling enough. Heel a lot more and you could walk almost upright on the opposite ceiling..!

    A helpful tip: On another boat building channel they used a silicone cooking spatula to do their fillets. It makes beautiful fillets without having to go back and clean up the excess from the top and bottom edges. Also nothing sticks to the silicone, so you can use it for a long time.

    When lighting an oil lamp never lower a cold globe onto the burner. Hold the globe above for a short time to warm the glass. Modern day globes are not very robust and can crack easily if they are put on cold. Great work. As said before the Weems and Plath isn’t a riding light it’s a cabin light. The second lamp isn’t a true Davey lamp as usable in an explosive atmosphere it too is a cabin lamp.

  • @taleg1
    @taleg1 2 роки тому

    Those lamps are also made to generate heat at the light up, doing double duty. I found that many years ago when I found a box of lanterns at at flea market and bought them, sadly they are gone now as some asshole stole them while I was moving, but what I learned was that in a smaller room, one generated a bit of hit and it was enough to push back both a bit of cold, but also the typical wet feeling that comes sometime when you are in a boat without heat and it's raining.
    Both were were beautiful, but I imagine the second one to be better at heating. Keep up the good work and remember to have fun.

    That second lamp you showed us is known here in UK as a miners safety lamp. They were developed specifically to try to reduce the risk of explosion in coal mines due to the buildup of noxious gases & the use of naked flames. Far too many miners died before Humphrey Davy, in Cornwall, came up with the first type of safety lamp.

    Interestingly, I had the same reaction when Maya referred to the bulkhead as a wall and instantly, Aladino referred to us picky viewer to "edit" the proper boat nomenclature into the vid. In my defense, I did spend almost a half century making my living on boats, so thanks Aladino for considering the "peanut gallery".

      I've never been around boats but I've been reading. Correct me if I'm wrong but it's not a ceiling above you, but overhead? And what's between the overhead and the cabin sole (not floor!) is a ceiling (not a wall either)!

    • @philgray1023
      @philgray1023 2 роки тому +1

      @@sietuuba I think the correct term is Deck Head. I was just worrying about forgetting the names of bits of boat, however when I was in the navy almost everything was called a tweaker. A 5lb hammer was big tweaker. A floor polisher was called a tweaker. A small hammer was unique in being called a tapometer. Every line on a sailboat was a tweaker. In fact nothing was called by its proper name. Ranks were Louie, Louie Com, Com and Kipper. However, not to their faces.

      No I don’t think so - a true marine oil anchor lite has fresnel lens and is wind/ rain proof (supposedly😊)and typically have a nail at the bottom of the lamp so the mariner can tie it securely top and bottom to keep from swinging wildly in a stiff breeze.

    A comment....... One of the things that I did when I am painting or staining cabinets, I created a "paint-room" out of plastic with a fan going outside, i.e., negative pressure. This keeps dust from going on my projects. It usually take a half a day to set up. I usually do it in a garage where I am doing the cabinets. Just a suggestion.....

    Could I please encourage you to make the top coat on the interior another off-white, perhaps even cream? For me, plain white is cold, but cream is much warmer and softer.
