Be 50 soon. I have basically lived this song. Fell in love with a girl out of highschool that didn't work out for whatever reason. But, I will say this, I'm glad it didn't. I ended up marrying someone much better and I love her so much more than anyone else I was ever with. Just when you think life has sold you short. God shows up and reminds you who's in charge of this crazy world...
i understand . i ran away with this girl in the 80s numerous times . she broke my heart . i was a nice guy and girls feed off that they hurt you . not all though . i have been married 26 years and i am 50 . i have two boys who are grown and i am blessed . the Lord does give those blessings .
Thanks for sharing this. It's been more than 8 years since my high school love left me while I was in my first year in the service. It's still hard for me to get over her memory. I'm still reluctant to let it go.
I hear you... a girl i fell in love with probably still does'nt know it.... I thought i saw her a few years back.... still just stood there and wondered....
Hey Eric if you are reading this I wanna say thank you. I use to listen to this song and watch the music video on tv at my great grandparents house when my mom was bad on drugs. You helped me through a terrible time in my life and your music and this song use to bring me so much light. Now I listen to it I can feel what I felt then and seen how much I have grown. Now I'm in the army and left that life behind. THANK YOU
And thank you for your service! The Armed Forces of the United States have pulled a lot of kids out of really bad situations and given them direction in their lives. My younger brother was one. He got out of an unhealthy situation at home, joined the Army, went through Ranger school. Then SERE. Then sniper training. In amongst all that, he married a wonderful woman, had two lovely daughters, and then got out. He now works for a small company in AZ, lives in a million dollar home, and enjoys the life he's built for himself.

I’ve listened to Bruce Springsteen my entire life. I was introduced to him at 8 years old by my father, I listened to him my entire senior year on the train ride to and from school, I’ve been listening to him all through college. He’s been a mainstay in my life more than almost every friend but one. I love hearing tributes to him from other artists because it makes me realise how revered he is, not just by his adoring fans, but other artists too. He’s Americas favourite son, and the rest of the world loves him also!

I remember when this came out and I had this song on repeat for hours and hours at night. I couldn't stop hearing different details in it every time, and it kept making me want to cry... This is one of the only songs that ever used to give me any sort of emotional response and to this day it still hits me the same way :)
I hated this song when it came out. Not because it was bad. But because every single station played it every other song. But now when I hear it. It takes me back. As the lyric goes. Melody sounds like a memory.
I moved to Colorado, 2011, went through some hard times, I was a free lance photographer. After hopping around jobs, I took my camera and a portfolio I had built to a local camera shop, the owners name was Rich. It started as an interview, and turned into a conversation, he hired me on the spot, after a 3 hour conversation. Everyone else had been working for him for a minimum of 5 years. They all took me in like family. I was 22, had just packed up my life and left. This song played on his playlist for the store at least 3 times a day. I grew to hate it, I moved back to Seattle about 2015, Rich died in his sleep, due to an unknown reason at the time. My prior co workers contacted me and I broke down. I immediately bought a plane ticket, and a song I had not heard for years came on the radio. It was his favorite song. This song. Rich, I love you man. You took me in when I was young and stupid. You changed my life forever. A melody is really a memory.
That's the saddest comment I have seen, qnd have looked through comments on over 50 songs. I hope you qnd rich can have another three hour conversation in heaven.
Who is listening to this amazing song in 2024/2025 Edit:never had that many likes or replies on a comment before tysm 290 and 16 Edit 2 thanks for 415 likes and 24 comments also I have a UA-cam channel Edit 3 ty for 500 likes
I will never forget this song as long as I live. The first time I heard this song, I was 17 years old on a mountain view looking over Livermore, California in the middle of July. And I was in the passenger seat of my ex girlfriends Grand Cherokee. Whenever I hear this song, that image will always come to my mind. Great song.
I was 19 my pregnant girlfriend sleeping with her head on my chest as this song played in her living room. I miss you. I love you and our daughter. May those memories be forever.
When I think of you, I think of 19 in San Diego, 22 in Naples, Italy, 23 in Athens, Greece....24 in Norfolk......and on and on......now, it will be 56 in Vegas. Yea, I still love you and it's always BEEN you.
Thanks, it's been hard but, it was my mistake for not marrying him.....Now 2 families later and several ex spouses, we will meet again. Funny, I am Not scared.....I guess because I KNOW that I love him and he loves me! That never changed!
No country song makes my heart feel likes it's being squeezed as Springsteen does. It brings some of the best memories I can only wish to relive. Thank you Church!
An Indian from a remote corner in India. Avid country music fan. A pity that I discovered this gem so late. Was stuck with "Kill a word" up untill a few years ago but somehow didn't explore Eric Church's discography much. Boy oh boy. Better late than never. On a loop. When you nonchalantly say "Springsteen", it sends a rush of blood to my heart ❤️ What an artist you are ❤️
For those who don't know: Bruce Springsteen is a man that helped rock and roll become what it is. Eric references many of his songs in this song. I'm on Fire, Born in the U.S.A., and Born to Run are a few I heard. I think I also heard Glory Days.
Not sure if this comment will get noticed or not, but I was actually one of the kids running around somewhere in the background at 2:26. In fact, the garage scenes were taken a few doors down from where I lived, on the same street as the one Eric walks down in the video. It's been well over a decade, but man, what a night this was. Even seeing the music video now, it's a nostalgia bomb. To think that me along with some of the kids seen throughout the video have all grown up, moved away, or are busy doing their own things, it's crazy how time flies. My younger brother, the one who rode out of the garage at 1:41, he's all grown up and is about to graduate high school. A handful the kids I was running around with at 2:26, some of us are working now or are wrapping up college. A few of them moved away so I don't entirely know what they're doing now, but I hope they're doing well. Despite it being over a decade, I don't think this is a memory I'll ever forget. It's ironic how this is the melody I keep coming back to for a memory I will never forget.
I'm 19, recently moved to the UK from Texas. It's the middle of winter, 5:40 in the morning, on my third cup of coffee today, and just listening to country music in the kitchen and I have an interview at 11. Yeah, life's pretty good.
There will be some downs in the near future, remember right now and remember how you survived to get to this point. Do it again, and the next time will be even better. All the best, my Texas friend.
Eric church doesn't care about what genre he is considered he just makes music that he likes which is why I like him he doesn't do it to be cool he does it because it's his thing
Exactly! He is not only one of the greatest artist of today but one of the greatest of all time, the emotion and passion he puts into his songs is unmatched

Not your average country song Eric Church does a good job at sticking out from most other country artists and has unique qualities. Springsteen and Give Me Back my Hometown are my favorites by him.
Dude whoever that girl was in the first 10 seconds of the song, I just wanna reach through the screen and just give her a comforting hug after hearing her say what she said
I've always loved this song, but my favorite line is "Funny how a melody, sounds like a memory..." It's just the absolute truth 💯!! Any song I listen to, can take me back to the person, place or time, in a heartbeat ❤
I was driving up the 400 towards Barrie Friday night and this song came on in my playlist. I started bawling just thinking of you. I remember sending you this song/video a few years back and you said it reminded you of us when we were growing up. To top it all off Bruce Springsteen was the last concert we ever attended together. It's been two and half years but the cut still feels like it was yesterday. I feel like I've been repeatedly stabbed and the pain feels like it will never end. I miss our "July Saturday Nights." Please save a place for me up there. I love you and miss you so much, Mike. Springsteen.
Jakob Goldbach Hey Jakob, thinking about my brother. He passed away almost 3 years ago. I left my comment open ended cause I didn't want to get too specific. I miss him a lot.
This is like my favorite songs of all time because when my mom and dad were still together, I would listen to this everyday and my dad would sing to it. It reminds me of my dad 💙 Edit: I also did like my own comment bc nobody else probably even cares so..
I care. That's a nice memory. Everyone has something or someone different they associate this song with and I think that's beautiful~ It's a wonderful song.
Dunno how a guy who was 8 years old in the summer of '85 managed to capture my summer of '85 so perfectly, but you did, EC. Saw Springsteen 4 times at Giants Stadium that summer with my girlfriend, whose name was tattooed on the passenger door of my '73 Mustang convertible (not on my arm, and I didn't have a Jeep, but the sentiment was spot-on). Thanks for the nostalgia!

I first heard this song when I was 7 and to be completely I didn’t understand the meaning and lyrics. 11 years later I am now 18, I have graduated high school last year, started an electrical career, and play guitar. I cherish this song so much more. The girl that comes to mind when this song plays, makes me wonder if she feels the same way. I know god has his plan for me, whether thats me and her back together or never seeing her again. Funny how this song was just song that I liked to being one that I cherish on a different level. May god bless each and every one of you. Now I have a lot more music to go back to

I always wondered what Bruce Springsteen thought of this song. He actually wrote a note to Eric in which he stated that he and his family loved the song and wished to collaborate with Church sometime in the future
"I bumped into you by happenstance You probably wouldn't even know who I am But if I whispered your name I bet there'd still be a spark" I'd like to think that after all these years this was still the case.
The first time I ever heard this song I was out at a bar in Nashville for my cousins bachelor party. It was my first time ever visiting Nashville, We had been drinking all day, it was about 2am and my friend passes me a joint and I take a hit, I hadn't smoked mmj in years so i had 0 tolerance. 5 min after I took the hit an extremely talented live cover band started playing this song. I headed out to the dance floor and started dancing with all my cousins and family around and it was honestly a transcendent experience. I was so in the moment and so in love with all of them and everyone around me, I completely lost myself in the music, I had absolutely no self consciousness, only an overwhelming sense of gratitude and nostalgic joy as I let the music move me. I all of a sudden knew we were all getting older and I felt how we probably don't have many moments like this left, of being young and uninhibited, free and together. It was magic. Now every time I hear this song I'm right back there. Dancing with my cousins, totally absorbed in the moment. Glorious.
“When you think about me, do you think about 17” I was 17 in 2002 & every time I here this song it takes me there! Little did I know, those memories would be worth more than Money can buy. 🤞🏾💙
This song came out 10 years ago? Still feels like it just came out today! A timeless classic ! My favorite line: I bumped into you by happenstance, you probably wouldn't even know who I am. But if I whispered your name, I bet still be a spark ♥️

All hail Bruce Springsteen! It's refreshing to know that there artists out there, like Eric, who acknowledge greatness. Music today is such shit. This song kicks ass.
To all my fellow PEOPLE'S out there starting a relationship and maintaining one this good vibes video is a great and written through song of how to treat each other to last!! Which should be what we are all looking for or not and if not please disregard!!! Great job Eric and Crew for Sharing!! 🙂🤗😎 Justsayin, what say u ?
When I first heard this song I was 17 and I had an old 99 jeep Cherokee. Living in the middle of the Appalachian mountains in a small town called Boone, North carolina. Riding the blueridge with my girlfriend, sitting around bonfires at parties in the woods with my gf and all my best friends sitting around, the happiness and care free life of being young. This song will always choke me up and will always be my favorite song of all time
@@angietortora9720 I know it's crazy! That's why I connect with him so much. I went and saw him in greensboro and he really put on a hell of a show because he said he was finally home. Gave me chills
Older country for sure an rare gems like this but most new country is straight garbage but like some Strait, Yoakam, Brooks, Black that's where it's at
I love all my fans and am a ton thankful to them for their extraordinary love, appreciation and support it keeps me all going..Are you one of my great fans out there!
I really dont know why, but I always get goose bumps at then end when the girl starts singing. Idk, just feels like he's singing the song about him thinking for her, and the girl at then end is like her thinking about him too. Like theyre both thinking about each other, though they both live a far ways off from each other
This song makes me so nostalgic something I never even had. The best advice I can give to a young man is don't be afraid to make those memories. You're gonna wish you had them when you get older.
I am 83 yrs old! I will tell you this, this song had to be made from experience, Eric had to have lived it, to put a song together that speaks to all of us, WHAT GOOD MEMORIES COME TO MIND, YOU ARE THE BEST ERIC❤

Eric sings about real people. He sings about us. And he's humble, unpretentious, and loves his fans as much as we love him and his music. There's one of his songs I want played at my funeral when that day comes. Guess.
idk if anyone is still active in the comments, but yesterday was a saturday in july and i spent it with my boyfriend and had the time of my life. thank you eric, for reminding of something i hope to never forget:)
I was 9 when this song was new, and it also gives me so much childhood nostalgia from my grandma and me listening to this while she would drive me to school every morning.
Wasn't a country fan until I heard this song. I remember exactly where I was. I was on a plane home for leave from deployment and I remember plugging my headphones into the arm rest to listen to the radio stations that had preset music on the plane and this song came on and it hit me like a ton of bricks. It was 2012 I was 20 years old and I was coming home from all this stress to coming home to friends, family, my country, my town. It put alot of things into perspective and i've love country music ever since.
I was freshly 21 and was close to being done with tech school for the Air Force. Reminds me of beers and fireworks on the fourth with my friends. Seriously good memories. This song will never not make me smile.
To this day when I hear that song I see you standin' there all night long Discount shades, store bought tan Flip flops and cut-off jeans Somewhere between that setting sun I'm on fire and born to run You looked at me and I was done And we're, we're just getting started I was singin' to you, you were singin' to me I was so alive, never been more free Fired up my daddy's lighter and we sang, oh Stayed there 'til they forced us out And took the long way to your house I can still hear the sound of you sayin' don't go When I think about you, I think about seventeen I think about my old jeep I think about the stars in the sky Funny how a melody sounds like a memory Like the soundtrack to a July Saturday night, Springsteen Love this track!! One of my favorite songs!!
This song brings me back to the summer of 2011. The summer I met the guy that made me believe in love again. Although he is no longer in my life there is not one single day that passes by that he does not cross my mind. I hope one day he knows this ...
Go after em! I had the same experience. I eventually said fuck it looked for her found her again now we're married with two little girls. If it's meant to be you'll find your way around again 😊

I know several people that hate country but like this song, it just gives you this feeling of fulfillment. It makes you feel like you have lived your life and now you are reminiscing about the good times. There are very few songs that have such a powerful impact (Colder Weather by Zac Brown being another one for me). Eric Church blew it out of the park.
my dad sang this song to me and my sister when we were young. still remember all the songs we listened to and sang together. "funny how a melody, sound like a memory."

Eric Church is one of the most humble people I know he is my cousin and we have hung out several times at family reunion‘s. We are very close. This man is a millionaire and he shows up in a 2010 Chevy Silverado wearing skinny jeans some old raggedy boots and a long sleeve flannel. Truly amazing.
my big brother passed away march 31, 2017 of overdose. this song was one of his favorite songs. it brings back so many happy memories with him, and that's exactly why i love music so much. i'm not crazy about country these days, but i grew up with it. and i grew up always singing and dancing with my big brother. i think of this as his song. i love you joseph. i hope you're jamming out in heaven.
Sorry for your loss. My brother is a complete out of control drug addict and I know in my heart if he don't stop using he will pass away and I can't fathom the thought of losing him. I'm at a complete loss.
If ya'kk haven't listened to Born To Run and Darkness on the Edge of town-- you won't understand how Church respects/loves Bruce Springsteens music. Bruceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
It's crazy just how much we screw up thinking she's going to stay forever and the day comes when she says it's over and she means it....Id give anything to go back and fix my mistakes and maybe she wouldn't be the one that got away...
He doesn't get noticed enough. I love his voice and I believe this is one of the best songs ever written. My mom loved him also and she was in her seventies.
Every time I hear this song, it reminds me of my 20th Birthday. My brother and my late sister bought this for me back in 2012. Hard to believe its been 11 years. This song always brings tears to my eyes, but it also brings a smile to my face because it reminds me of simpler times in life. Thank you Eric Church for making music that has made everlasting memories

Amen brother .. and kudos to Erich Church, a great artist in his own right, for giving this tribute to The Boss.
I remember when this came out and I had this song on repeat for hours and hours at night. I couldn't stop hearing different details in it every time, and it kept making me want to cry... This is one of the only songs that ever used to give me any sort of emotional response and to this day it still hits me the same way :)
I do and I miss it😭
Get a grip
I hated this song when it came out. Not because it was bad. But because every single station played it every other song. But now when I hear it. It takes me back. As the lyric goes. Melody sounds like a memory.
That’s amazing
🙂
I’m not a big fan of country in general. But this song, this masterpiece will forever bring joy to me and others.
Same.
You need to listen to Charlie Daniels the.

He nailed it
It’s one of those lyrics that just sticks with you. I think my next tattoo will be that lyric.
Then you gotta listen to ANY Rock song..... Even hmm Bruce SPRINGSTEN. Lmfao!!! He named it after a Classic Rocker, cause Country sucks..
Great song.
Great memory man.
Top notch memory, my dude!
Kinda gave me chills idk why lol
First time I heard this song I was 13, currently 17 and sitting here reading your comment :D...

Hello
How are you
Nailed it.
Saw Eric Church tonight, was one of the most memorable nights of my life
Jake Smith In Lincoln, Nebraska?
Lucas Perry no Grand Forks
Jake Smith Ah. I saw him on the 13th of January in Lincoln. Guess it doesn't seem like 5 days ago haha
Lucas Perry he was awesome, he wore UND's Sioux medallion around his neck, even though we aren't allowed to be called fighting Sioux anymore
I going to him in March I'm super excited. he's one of my favorites
An Indian from a remote corner in India. Avid country music fan. A pity that I discovered this gem so late. Was stuck with "Kill a word" up untill a few years ago but somehow didn't explore Eric Church's discography much.
Boy oh boy. Better late than never. On a loop. When you nonchalantly say "Springsteen", it sends a rush of blood to my heart ❤️
What an artist you are ❤️
For those who don't know: Bruce Springsteen is a man that helped rock and roll become what it is. Eric references many of his songs in this song. I'm on Fire, Born in the U.S.A., and Born to Run are a few I heard. I think I also heard Glory Days.
"do you remember those Glory Days". Good ear.
❤ cool beans!!!
this song will never get old

My son is 17 and he’s so in love with a girl who is 17, I let her move into my house (long story she needed a place to go) wish them the love story
Nah she gonna leave him sadly. Hope not but more than likely
Eric church doesn't care about what genre he is considered he just makes music that he likes which is why I like him he doesn't do it to be cool he does it because it's his thing
Exactly! He is not only one of the greatest artist of today but one of the greatest of all time, the emotion and passion he puts into his songs is unmatched
why i love avenged sevenfold too. You cant classify then as one genre of Rock. Theyre all over the place making awesome sounds
Well said! I agree!

+Brittany Andrews he's country, he's rock n roll, he's a rebel I wouldn't say he's just " a country guy" I'd say he's an "American badass"

This song is a lyrical masterpiece. The line, “funny how a melody, sounds like a memory” is a line that truly captures the entire song.
The most under rated lyrics in a song. Freaking genius line
"Funny how a melody, sounds like a memory" this will always hit hard for that someone
Not your average country song Eric Church does a good job at sticking out from most other country artists and has unique qualities. Springsteen and Give Me Back my Hometown are my favorites by him.

Perfect ending to a perfect song. Bang on young man, bang on!

Indeed. This is my favorite song and brings me back
I always wondered what Bruce Springsteen thought of this song. He actually wrote a note to Eric in which he stated that he and his family loved the song and wished to collaborate with Church sometime in the future
"I bumped into you by happenstance

But if I whispered your name

Sorry for your loss....
sorry man i lost my dad 2014 and i cried like a baby. Never cried so hard as a man at 25 years old.
Your dad was a good guy. You'll see him again.
Glorious.

It put alot of things into perspective and i've love country music ever since.

To this day when I hear that song
I see you standin' there all night long
Discount shades, store bought tan
Flip flops and cut-off jeans
Somewhere between that setting sun
I'm on fire and born to run
You looked at me and I was done
And we're, we're just getting started
I was singin' to you, you were singin' to me
I was so alive, never been more free
Fired up my daddy's lighter and we sang, oh
Stayed there 'til they forced us out
And took the long way to your house
I can still hear the sound of you sayin' don't go
When I think about you, I think about seventeen
I think about my old jeep
I think about the stars in the sky

I'm 11 and me and my dad will go fishing while listening to this
I am very sorry for your Big Brother
Thank you so much I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music 🎶❤️,
Sorry for your loss.

It's crazy just how much we screw up thinking she's going to stay forever and the day comes when she says it's over and she means it....Id give anything to go back and fix my mistakes and maybe she wouldn't be the one that got away...
jonathan davis i know exactly how you feel man
This song proves God's existence
Eric Church is one of the best song writers of our time.
He doesn't get noticed enough. I love his voice and I believe this is one of the best songs ever written. My mom loved him also and she was in her seventies.
Smile, thanks for your love and support towards me 🌹❤
"Funny how a melody sounds like a memory" a lyric equal to anything only Bruce Springsteen could have written
A tribute to Bruce
still great music 2024
Every time I hear this song, it reminds me of my 20th Birthday. My brother and my late sister bought this for me back in 2012. Hard to believe its been 11 years. This song always brings tears to my eyes, but it also brings a smile to my face because it reminds me of simpler times in life. Thank you Eric Church for making music that has made everlasting memories
