Wow, just saws one of these out on a test drive in Annapolis this afternoon, at the boat show. We were sailing and it came up to us ready to lift. It took off and looked so smooth!! Very exciting tech. Imagine traveling in such a quiet, smooth, fast hull! No more smell, loud noise, slamming. It was a site to behold.
Hydrofoils can perform alright in small waves. Flying Fish made a video of a prototype hydrogen powered hydrofoil in the north sea where it looked very stable. afaik it was designed to be stable in waves of more than a meter
I'm wondering if it can turn in the same radius as a regular speedboat when it's at foiling speed. Also wondering about what the foiling speed range is - how slow can it go before it drops back in the water?
The purpose of this speedboat is lower fuel consumption, i.e. no pollution and comfort, i think that's the most important thing about this model. I don't think they led by making a rocket that turns left and right. This is definitely the future, no pollution and supreme comfort...... Good luck Candela...
What happens when you get into weather and have to put it back down into the waves? Seems the battery won’t get you very far then. Maybe ok for a lake.
Powerboats don’t really coast like a car so there’s little to no inertia to recover by regen. As soon as you let off the throttle, it feels like your hitting the brakes. The friction of the water takes up all of the energy or slowing down.
@@Nate-bm8vk They are nice and much better than nothing, but I was on a yacht equipped with one but I still got queasy (not puking, but felt bad). If I was a billionaire I would have a yacht with some kind of gimbal system that completely eliminates motion.
I do t think things like this will scale up like that. Imagine trying to hold up an entire cargo ship. Just the uprights alone would have to be absolutely massive. Or how much water the wing would have to displace to provide enough lift to get it out of the water. Or how high it would have to lift it to get it over the waves in the open ocean. I don’t think there are any ports deep enough to handle something that big when it’s not planing. I think we are better off letting the water carry the weight and just push it along. But some kind of solar/wind/diesel electric motor could really help with shipping.
@@Heretowatchstuff Navier created a similar hydrofoil boat whose pods can retract and hug the hull sides, which makes it possible to tow the boat. A hydrofoil cargo ship could be designed to have its’ pods retract also to reduce draft depth. The pods might be as large as a French Scorpene class submarine, but someone could try to design it.
@@coffeeisthepathtovictory1290 design yeah. Build, I really doubt. You’d need like building size uprights and submarine size pods that are retractable. Look at the size of cranes necessary to lift up the pieces of the ship to build it. Or the cargo containers it carries. Now all of that. Out of the water. I would really be interested in seeing how much a hydrofoil could carry. I’ve seen some car ferry ones between Gibraltar and Morocco. But that is a long way from a cargo ship. And that was to cross a small straight. Not the pacific.
Actually one of Candela's first costomers commutes with his boat daily and he saves $30k a year just on fuel costs going from an ICE to a Candela (C-7 it was).
But hey people do hit stuff on the bottom of their boats all the time it's not like it doesn't happen it's just it shouldn't be common place for sea captains. :P
my calculations of average lithium battery packs with 5kWh each would require 14 to go 57 nautical miles... thats 1300lbs of battery weight... to go 57 nautical miles? are my calculations wrong? can it hydrofoil with 1300 extra pounds or only with a few miles worth of batteries onboard?
This is wrong, fortunately. The whole boat weighs and incredible low 1,750kg / 3,858lb. As far as I know they have not disclosed the weight of the battery pack, but they are using a car battery pack from Polestar - my guesstimate is around 250kg / 500lb.
I didn't think they would be able to come up with an electric boat. When it comes to cars, not hearing the engine is bothersome (I think the rumble of a tuned V-8 is one of the best sounds in the world). But for some reason when it comes to boats the normal engine sound is aggravating and annoying, much louder and does not sound as good as car. But there is an application with boating you don't have with cars, and that's Fishing! This would definitely be a plus for any type of fishing boat, plus allow you to hold a conversion while driving the boat. I have to say impressed - till I see the price tag I'm sure. lol
seems like it be a completely different feel. bouncing on the waves is part of the fun of a speedboat. i'm thinking if there's some branch, seaweed or unexpected object below the surface, it could damage the foil and i'd be pretty concerned what happens to the passengers if the boat hits or snags something while hydrofoiling. looks cool though.
If it's a lithium battery inside I would not want to be around when the seawater gets in it. Look at the cars that caught on fire after the hurricane in florida.
Ok...if you own one of these, or plan on buying one, whatever you do......don't try to show off where the speedboats and party pontoons are. Might get some 🌈 name calling and a few 🍺 cans thrown at ya. I know from experience. I was the guy in the pontoon throwing the beer cans
How is the company planning on protecting marine life? They are completely quiet, so how will whales and dolphins know to stay away from the propellers?
I grew up boating with my grandparents. This seems like a very 1 dimensional boat. If there is no wake then wake boarding and water skiing are significantly less fun, so are those blow up water skimming things. Not to mention what is boating without the roar of an engine after someone yells, "hit it!" Like I'm sure it is fun in the same way an electric car can be fun. But electric propelled objects just lack the character and charm of their ICE counterparts in most cases.

pretty calm conditions in this video. I wonder how it works in swell or wind chop

This would be so cool to have on a super yatch. The company should make a super yatch next.
I'm getting one installed on my super yacht this Thursday😅

"Hon, could you move your head to the side a bit. I need to take a dump"
😂

Sweden has more than 100 000 lakes. Its definitely a lakeboat
Great video, amazing concept. Amazing price.
I wonder how well it would perform with a toroidal propeller.
You need to look up the videos explaining how that was overhyped
So what happens during an emergency quick and sharp turn? Does the boat topple to its side?
WOW! What a beautiful mechanism! 😇🤗❤
Looks like the perfect Boat.
one upgrade, add a mast and sails for windy days.
Or,. use a kite sail with out a mast and rigging. best idea.
Could they put a propeller on the nose and use it for battery regen?

Just don't stick an ugly windmill on it.
So futuristic Design of this electric water boat.
Now imagine having a boat with an actual gimbal between the lower and upper hull. Seasickness would go away!
Seakeepers are sort of like gimballs with nearly eliminating boat roll but they are also not cheap.

Given the boat's efficiency, a small diesel generator for long distance cruising would be a huge benefit.
If Candela makes a cargo ship version they would control the world's oceans in two decades.

What’s next ? Hydra foil bike ?
It exists already. The manta5 or something like that
Running costs are going to be 10-40x lower than a conventional planing ICE boat.

Not the only electric hydrofoil!
There is a more high end version of this concept made by a German company. The foil is called "Dorado".
World's only? Was this before or after the Navier?
Where to charge in the next question.
Super cool,
Also what is that song at the beginning???

The engine raises up and down with the foils.
All hydrofoil boats have the same principle as far as I know, this is just electric.

Not bad
Now find a way to solar charge it or hydro charge it and you have a winner.
Maybe add a wind turbine
Yes, hopefully the shade roof option has solar panels on it for double duty. Considering most boats are in the sun all day, it would make sense.

There are some companies doing electric outboard motors. I think they aim there product squarely at people using small fishing boats.
Nice
I would rather live in this way more than a traditional 🏠 house. Add some solar, then travel anywhere.
Some solar huh 😅😅 round the world in no time
The worlds only ? Don’t think so, check out the Navier 30 👍😜👌
$400k for a boat with a $40 flight controller. Where's the rest of the money going?
To the carbon fiber hull.
So if you are lucky, you might make a 15 mile out and return trip.

Same here. I like in an area with plenty sea turtles. They usually get away from normal boats, but I assume that's because the noise.
All they have to do now is get it to go 80 mph !!!

Maybe Tesla can come out with nautical version of their cybertruck with foils and prop that come down when the truck hits water.

Get it back to harbor quick before the battery runs out.
I love how there's no mention of battery range 😅😅😅 another beautiful p.o.s
Wow finally someone invents a boat that uses 1/5 or less the fuel/juice as previous boats and this is the can-headed comment. Go figure!

why is it still shaped like a boat if it doesnt need to push through the water? cant u find a more Efficient design?
Well, it still functions like a bloat at lower speeds.
