Meganium is highly underrated. It's not amazing, but it's not bad--Johto is just hostile to grass types. It does fairly well in Hoenn and is decent in Orre. People saying it's bad mostly haven't done much thinking outside the box of Johto.

While it's more difficult to use it in older generations and without Leech Seed (if you don't have access to the egg move), the trick with Meganium is knowing how and when to use it). Meganium is very hard to one-shot, and it often 3-4 hit KOed, which is enough time to put out a Leech Seed, screen, and heal up with Giga Drain or Synthesis. The only issue Meganium really has is coverage, but still you can Body Slam Earthquake or in some romhacks, moonblast. (Ancientpower's pp is usually too low to be effective). The only other real coverage you have is iron tail (ew) and hidden power. Still, it tends to get its job done, provided its being used correctly. I've found that most starter Pokémon are pretty solid. Meganium is no exception.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on UA-cam. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
The problem with a lot of the newer starters is they don't look like *creatures* that you could find in the wild, they look like *characters* with specific personalities.

My favorite is Feraligatr. Followed by Samurott and Emboar. Gatr is just so cool, DDance and Sheer Force are perfect for a Gator that's gonna eat the opposing team.
Inteleon doesnt have the best visual design but I think its actually pretty cool. I like the bond-esque stature I feel like Inconeroar is not really the problem in VGC, it‘s more the metagame around it that makes it mandatory. What really pushed it over the edge tho was Parting Shot in Gen 8.
I feel like the problem with the Gen 8 starters is that none of their designs feel "complete" because they were designed with their Gmax forms in mind. For example, Gmax Inteleon looks amazing. The fact that it has a water sniper rifle makes it's design feel "complete", and just makes it way cooler. Once you take a look at the Gmax form, normal Inteleon looks like a middle stage evolution, like it's still missing an important part of its design.
Incineroar is what happens when you give a mon with good stats and moves Intimidate and Fake Out. It should never be done. Hitmontop and Scrafty are far more balanced with their limited movepool, worse stats (just look at Hitmontop's HP), and worse typing (Scrafty my beloved, x4 weak to Fairy). Incin is def a problem because it's like the giga VGC pokemon with access to Intimidate, Fake Out, pivoting, debuffs, damage (Flare Blitz goes crazy), ON TOP of good bulk and attack and a decent type combo. They should take Fake Out or Intimidate away from it imo or he'll keep being xXVGCMasterXx until the end of time.
Over 10 years later, having let Emboar simmer and letting the overexposure of fire/fighting types being washed down by new interesting type combos. I've started to grow quite fond of it. While its predecessors are clearly superior competitive-wise, I personally enjoy using Emboar so much more. Infernape and Blaziken embody the mixed attacking glass cannon roles, which isn't bad, but there's just so many other Pokemon of that archetype. Emboar fully embodies what a Fire/Fighting type should be. Pure offensive power, no matter the cost. The damage potential Emboar carries is insane and made it incredibly fun to use against stall teams in gen 6. Getting it in safely was a challenge at times, but once it's in against even bulky waters, it was always gonna delete something while potentially deleting itself through all the recoil. It is incredibly flawed and almost all the criticism it gets is valid, but I love it in spite of that
I love Serperior and I'm really glad my boy can be a genuine threat. I wish we could get it in Scarlet and Violet because I feel like a Tera Flying Contrary Serperior paired with a Shed Tail Cyclizar can be dangerous and I wanna try that.
Thank you for giving much appreciation to Unova Samurott People complain it isnt a physical attacker but It being a Mix attacker in lower tiers is what makes it special and Unpredictable, he doesnt try to be too Powerfull, he is just cool like that in my Opinion. It looks a bit too humanoid imo. Also not really digging the football theme , it's like rilaboom with the drummer aspect , I just dont see how that would be pratical in battle. It just feels like they base the gen 8 starters on human jobs that a kid would like to become.

One of the best parts of this video is one of the negatives of Hisui Typhlosion he mentioned we have a few fire ghost types now, and then a positive to Skeledirge was that it had a “unique type”.
Cinderace is absolutely horrible in my opinion it just looks exactly like a man wearing a fur suit. My favourite is swampert, torterra, and charizard in that order so I guess I just prefer the more animal like designs.
imo Inteleon is a top 5 starter: -Sobble cutest first stage, also my 2nd favourite behind Rowlet -has the best looking Gmax form from the starters -The one anime episode where Sobble meets an Inteleon was cute asf -Is 6'03 which means hes taller than the short king charizard Inteleon got done so dirty with Sniper tho, they gave Cinderace a signature ability + Rillaboom stole a legendarys signature ability....
I appreciate you giving Empoleon so much attention and putting it so high on the list. It's my favorite starter, and far and away my favorite pokemon to use in gen 5 UU, which is my favorite format. It has so many good sets it can run, and tweaking its stats ever so slightly can completely change what it can stay in against. The meta pick a few years ago was to make it more specially defensive, but I made mine physically defensive and caught a lot of people by surprise with it when they thought they could one-shot it. I can absolutely respect putting it at number 3.

Same man, I love Incine, my second fave after Typhlosion He did reason that Incine was a centralizing threat back then (which understandable), but I do know that a lot of people hate it cuz furry (makes me sad cuz I'm a furry but everyone's entitled to their own opinion haha)
I used to dislike Incineroar because i didn't like the direction Pokemon starters were taking. Now that we've gotten past gen 8... well, Incineroar seems fine now compared to Inteleon.

i am a defender of inteleon, and im upset you didnt realize inteleon had a signature move. it has a very high crit chance, i think 50% which pairs very well with his “mediocre” ability. i havent ever actually used inteleon… but ive seen it used and i dont think its the worst.
Eh… one of the problems is that inteleon can get out offensed since it’s incredibly frail. Furthermore unless you’re running scope lens and want to die to scarfers you have a random chance of the move not doing enough damage to kill. Inteleon’s coverage is also easy to stuff by throwing say toxapex or ferrothorn in front of it. It’s too frail to set up and too weak to just eliminate threats raw. Just use greninja if you want an effective special attacking water type with better coverage and supportive options.
19:49 Unfortunately in singles there’s no point to use Hyper Voice when Sparkling Aria is already a sound type move. It’s better in doubles at least(doesn’t hit your ally)
Primarina is so close to being an amazing pokemon. Literally all it needs is to learn Boomburst. Imagine Boomburst with Liquid Voice. Now that would be scary.
I LOVE swampert in the AAA metagame - giving him regen turns him into a great defensive pivot but he's not overwhelming for the game and has noticeable weaknesses. Flip turn plus regenerator makes a great assault vest or stealth rocker

I don’t really get where you’re coming from with Emboar, but I respect your opinion lol. In terms of competitive, it’s a decidedly average starter usually being RU, distinctly above Samurott, Typhlosion, Decidueye, Blastoise, Charizard, Sceptile, Torterra, Inteleon, and Meganium, and being around the same level as Feraligatr, Delphox, and Incineroar. and its design is actually pretty unique in my opinion, having a distinctly Chinese origin with inspiration from classics Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West alongside its body having patterns like a __ding__, which are terracotta vessels that represent power in Chinese culture (Ting-Lu’s head is one of these), alongside being a chonky martial arts master pig. I think it’s pretty cool, and it’s starting to become more appreciated as time goes on; I used to think it was pretty dumb too but now it’s a well above average starter for me
I always get confused why people hate humanoid starters but love Pokemon like Lucario or Gardevoir. Is it ok to be humanoid as long as it's not a starter? I dont understand

You should rank the pseudo-legendaries or cross-gen evos (Kingambit, Annihilape, Ursaluna, Basculeion, Scizor, Crobat, Togekiss, Gliscor, Mamoswine, Roserade, etc.) You could also do the early birds (Staraptor, Corviknight, Talonflame, Pidgeot, etc.) or early bugs (Lokix, Scolipede, Vikavolt, Orbeetle, Krickitune, etc.)
Skeledirge has my favorite pokemon design over the last few gens. It just works from top to bottom. Fuecoco has top tier DAT BOY energy as well, up there with Totodile and Mudkip.
Here’s a fun idea for a Meganium alternate form: Lean into the Brontosaurus 🦕 visual by making it Grass/Rock. Give it the ability Solid Rock so it can function as a defensive Pokemon, or Serene Grace so it can fish for Ancient Power boosts. New signature move: Palm Pummel. Grass type, 15PP, physical, 70 power, 100 accuracy. It has a 50% chance to apply Leech Seed. (This would incentivize Serene Grave to make it a 100% chance.)
I'm honestly hoping they give meganium the Legends Arceus treatment, and they should do what Radical Red did: give it the fairy type and Triage ability, along with moves like calm mind and draining kiss. Actual threat, brilliant rework.

I'd look on some hard fan game, where your starters are: Meganium, Samurott/Inteleon and Emboar/Delphox. I wonder, who's worse in fire and water starters? And why
Man, no starter can compare to Meganium in terms of badness... but in a fan game i think Inteleon and Delphox are always going to be pretty useful given their fairly high speed and SpA. Personally i think I'd go with either Blastoise or Feraligatr for water and mmmmaybe Typhlosion or Emboar for fire. Blastoise has low attacking stats unless you can get a mega stone so i think it would stuggle the most, but it'll always have utility in rapid spin and in just being a water type lol. Feraligatr on the other hand has a pretty bad level-up learnset being a physical water type, so its best options would probably end up being normal and dark type moves which is... not good. On the other hand, if it has access to its hidden ability and move tutors, then it can be a dragon dance set up sweeper which is pretty good! Fire is definitely the hardest category for me to choose a weakest 'mon, but i chose Typhlosion because if i recall, its level up moves arent great, and its maximum potential is probably like... choice scarf eruption? Which isnt crazy good either. And Emboar is slow and really not that bulky because of its low defenses, BUT goddamn does that fighting typing make it more threatening
One change to Meganium I'd love to see is switching its hidden ability to Flower Veil. Flower Veil is a theoretically busted ability, preventing all Grass Pokémon on your team from getting statused or having their stats dropped by the opponent. It's currently only on pure Fairy types, but Meganium would be a good user of it in singles and doubles. I've played a few ROM hacks with Flower Veil Meganium and it's a great addition to my teams
Sucks that Emboar sucks, I’ve never fully understood the slack, I really enjoyed running through black 2 with it. Reckless choice band with flare blitz, head smash, and wild charge does crazy damage.
It might suck in higher tiers but it was actually good in lower tiers and iirc got banned from NU in Gen 7. It performed better than Samurrott, Charizard, Blastoise, Typhlosion, Meganium, Sceptile, Torterra, Delphox, Decidueye and Incineroar in Gen 7 singles. So yeah, FAR from worst lol

1. The move didn’t exist in Gen 5 and was designed for a mon with a literal archer motif.
2. You do realize Archerfish are a thing right? If a fish can be analogous to an archer by spitting out water so can a samurai otter

It looks a bit too humanoid imo. Also not really digging the football theme , it's like rilaboom with the drummer aspect , I just dont see how that would be pratical in battle. It just feels like they base the gen 8 starters on human jobs that a kid would like to become.

One of the best parts of this video is one of the negatives of Hisui Typhlosion he mentioned we have a few fire ghost types now, and then a positive to Skeledirge was that it had a “unique type”.

Cinderace is absolutely horrible in my opinion it just looks exactly like a man wearing a fur suit. My favourite is swampert, torterra, and charizard in that order so I guess I just prefer the more animal like designs.
imo Inteleon is a top 5 starter:
-Sobble cutest first stage, also my 2nd favourite behind Rowlet
-has the best looking Gmax form from the starters
-The one anime episode where Sobble meets an Inteleon was cute asf
-Is 6'03 which means hes taller than the short king charizard
Inteleon got done so dirty with Sniper tho, they gave Cinderace a signature ability + Rillaboom stole a legendarys signature ability....

I appreciate you giving Empoleon so much attention and putting it so high on the list. It's my favorite starter, and far and away my favorite pokemon to use in gen 5 UU, which is my favorite format.
It has so many good sets it can run, and tweaking its stats ever so slightly can completely change what it can stay in against. The meta pick a few years ago was to make it more specially defensive, but I made mine physically defensive and caught a lot of people by surprise with it when they thought they could one-shot it. I can absolutely respect putting it at number 3.

sometimes i get reaaaaally hyperfixated on youtube channels that do what i plan on doing as a hobby for the next few weeks. currently i'm trying to get back into comp (i played comp during XY through med SM but i've been try harding pokemon since i was a kid) and your channel is my current hyperfixation. Charizard was my favourite starter until Blaziken. He absolutely deserves the hype and I used to end the original games with an over levelled Charizard and pretty much no other mons hahahaha

I used to dislike Incineroar because i didn't like the direction Pokemon starters were taking. Now that we've gotten past gen 8... well, Incineroar seems fine now compared to Inteleon.

i am a defender of inteleon, and im upset you didnt realize inteleon had a signature move. it has a very high crit chance, i think 50% which pairs very well with his “mediocre” ability. i havent ever actually used inteleon… but ive seen it used and i dont think its the worst.

Eh… one of the problems is that inteleon can get out offensed since it’s incredibly frail.
Furthermore unless you’re running scope lens and want to die to scarfers you have a random chance of the move not doing enough damage to kill. Inteleon’s coverage is also easy to stuff by throwing say toxapex or ferrothorn in front of it.
It’s too frail to set up and too weak to just eliminate threats raw. Just use greninja if you want an effective special attacking water type with better coverage and supportive options.

I LOVE swampert in the AAA metagame - giving him regen turns him into a great defensive pivot but he's not overwhelming for the game and has noticeable weaknesses. Flip turn plus regenerator makes a great assault vest or stealth rocker

I don’t really get where you’re coming from with Emboar, but I respect your opinion lol. In terms of competitive, it’s a decidedly average starter usually being RU, distinctly above Samurott, Typhlosion, Decidueye, Blastoise, Charizard, Sceptile, Torterra, Inteleon, and Meganium, and being around the same level as Feraligatr, Delphox, and Incineroar. and its design is actually pretty unique in my opinion, having a distinctly Chinese origin with inspiration from classics Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West alongside its body having patterns like a __ding__, which are terracotta vessels that represent power in Chinese culture (Ting-Lu’s head is one of these), alongside being a chonky martial arts master pig. I think it’s pretty cool, and it’s starting to become more appreciated as time goes on; I used to think it was pretty dumb too but now it’s a well above average starter for me

You should rank the pseudo-legendaries or cross-gen evos (Kingambit, Annihilape, Ursaluna, Basculeion, Scizor, Crobat, Togekiss, Gliscor, Mamoswine, Roserade, etc.)
You could also do the early birds (Staraptor, Corviknight, Talonflame, Pidgeot, etc.) or early bugs (Lokix, Scolipede, Vikavolt, Orbeetle, Krickitune, etc.)

Skeledirge has my favorite pokemon design over the last few gens. It just works from top to bottom. Fuecoco has top tier DAT BOY energy as well, up there with Totodile and Mudkip.
Here’s a fun idea for a Meganium alternate form:
Lean into the Brontosaurus 🦕 visual by making it Grass/Rock.
Give it the ability Solid Rock so it can function as a defensive Pokemon, or Serene Grace so it can fish for Ancient Power boosts.
New signature move: Palm Pummel. Grass type, 15PP, physical, 70 power, 100 accuracy. It has a 50% chance to apply Leech Seed. (This would incentivize Serene Grave to make it a 100% chance.)
I'm honestly hoping they give meganium the Legends Arceus treatment, and they should do what Radical Red did: give it the fairy type and Triage ability, along with moves like calm mind and draining kiss. Actual threat, brilliant rework.

If Emboar hadn't been bipedal (even though it's shiny is great) and had been frie-ground it would immediately be so much more preferable

Man, no starter can compare to Meganium in terms of badness... but in a fan game i think Inteleon and Delphox are always going to be pretty useful given their fairly high speed and SpA.
Personally i think I'd go with either Blastoise or Feraligatr for water and mmmmaybe Typhlosion or Emboar for fire.
Blastoise has low attacking stats unless you can get a mega stone so i think it would stuggle the most, but it'll always have utility in rapid spin and in just being a water type lol. Feraligatr on the other hand has a pretty bad level-up learnset being a physical water type, so its best options would probably end up being normal and dark type moves which is... not good. On the other hand, if it has access to its hidden ability and move tutors, then it can be a dragon dance set up sweeper which is pretty good!
Fire is definitely the hardest category for me to choose a weakest 'mon, but i chose Typhlosion because if i recall, its level up moves arent great, and its maximum potential is probably like... choice scarf eruption? Which isnt crazy good either. And Emboar is slow and really not that bulky because of its low defenses, BUT goddamn does that fighting typing make it more threatening
There must be a past paradox Pokémon we can recruit to take down Iron Mugulis and Iron Fellow

One change to Meganium I'd love to see is switching its hidden ability to Flower Veil. Flower Veil is a theoretically busted ability, preventing all Grass Pokémon on your team from getting statused or having their stats dropped by the opponent. It's currently only on pure Fairy types, but Meganium would be a good user of it in singles and doubles. I've played a few ROM hacks with Flower Veil Meganium and it's a great addition to my teams

Sucks that Emboar sucks, I’ve never fully understood the slack, I really enjoyed running through black 2 with it. Reckless choice band with flare blitz, head smash, and wild charge does crazy damage.
It might suck in higher tiers but it was actually good in lower tiers and iirc got banned from NU in Gen 7. It performed better than Samurrott, Charizard, Blastoise, Typhlosion, Meganium, Sceptile, Torterra, Delphox, Decidueye and Incineroar in Gen 7 singles. So yeah, FAR from worst lol
