      I love hearing that sound everytime we stsrt engines, on every aircraft I've ever worked... These bad boys out out a few thousand (s) volts more spark than the grill ignitor does... But still very similar concept and sound... Except for a bad time when you don't hear it... I guess for both the engine and the grill situation..

    Many moons ago, I once had a deep-V slalom ski-boat with single 6-cylinder Mercury outboard. We used to run it in a shallow sea-swell at about 70 mph, and it was a safe, but violent experience hitting every other swell-top - but it was a shed-load of fun.
    I can’t imagine doing 100 mph on top of that, in anything floating 🤣

  • @goldsburg

    Those "strange" noises that are heard while maneuvering, are the clutches on each drive being engaged/disengaged. The pilot is essentially steering the boat at that point with the independent props...

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X Рік тому +1

      Those are not clutches. The boat has crash boxes. What you hear are the PT's being engaged and disengaged via disc brakes on the PT shafts. You put the drives in and out of gear while the PT is not rotating, that's the whole idea behind crash boxes. There are buttons on the shift levers to engage and disengage the brakes as you shift and manoeuvrer the boat.

    If that is prop driven what kind of massive reduction gear is in that thing? I think the ship I was on in the Navy was 300 (rough) to 1 from turbine to shaft.

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X Рік тому

      There is no reduction box. There is a power turbine designed to spin at similar rpm as a normal V8, so about 6500 rpm. What ever reduction is there, is just the normal reduction in the drives.
      Your story does not add up. Usually ships that use gas generators as propulsion units, being it engines like the LM1500 or LM2500, don't need a reduction in that magnitude. Heck, even if you drove the prop straight off of the HP shaft which you NEVER do, that would be about 9000 rpm at full chuff. Normally a PT on an LM 1500 and LM2500 spin at about 3000 rpm or so, so in order for a big commercial or naval vessel to achieve useable prop speed at say 150-300 rpm depending on ship size etc. it would only need a 10:1 or 20:1 reduction. If it was a water jet propelled ship, then the PT shaft would go straight to the input shaft of the jet pump without a reduction.

    just a newby question, does it still use propellers? or just jet thrust like a water jet?

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X Рік тому

      The power turbine is connected to normal surface drives with props via crash boxes.

    How is that boat propelled? With normal propellers? Or are the jets just pointed backward like an airplane? Or is there some other system?

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X 2 роки тому

      These are not jets. Those are normal gas turbine engines mated to transmissions. Drives are normal #6 drives.
