A big thank you to Darren Hansen for providing the boat to get this close up footage. Engine start is at 2:53! Also at 8:54 there is a birdstrike on the #3 engine!
When I was in the 3rd grade, my Dad got stationed in Norfolk Naval Base, circa 1956. He rented a house for the year and my brother (4 years younger than me) and I would go across the street to the beach. We had a blast when the Navy seaplanes would land on the bay and taxi up the ramp. They would create a good wave on landing that we appreciated. I remember their drone sound as they flew overhead of the base housing. Also saw a few blimps (dirigibles?) flying in the area. This amazing video immediately took me back to then. Thanks! Bob Powell, CMSgt, USAF(Ret)
My dad was a ball turret gunner in TBM's as the war ended. Then he went to PBY:s in Jacksonville, Florida. He was in for thirty three years, going from E1 to 04. The concrete ramps he rolled in and out of the on St. Johns River are still there. They make me smile when my wife and I sail by. Miss him. He was a patriot's patriot. Mom too. Selfless.
Nothing will ever replace the sound of those big radial engines going full bore. Excellent camera work, it really gives a sense of how massive these big beautiful beasts truly are.
Was in slave Lake ab working a bunch of fires back in the day and seen these in action dropping tons of water at a time on fires and wow man just fukn wow.
I was apssing by Northolt airport many years ago and saw a Super Constellation taxing right alongside the road. The sight was truly phenominal. The size, beauty and the engines on that plane was out of this world!!
I'm 1976 I was 16 and was driving in New Hampshire when I saw a hand made sign, floatplane ride $ 5, i knock on the door and an old guy says follow me, little old plane on the lake, he took us up for 45/50 minutes . It was great.
Wow, what a wonderful sight and sound when she finally opened up the taps and got on the plain! Would have loved to have been alongside her too as she glided past so majestically. The Martin Mars really is the pinnacle of piston engined big flying boats and is in a class of 1. Also lovely to see her looking so rightly magnificent in Navy blue - when you see the launch alongside too it makes you realise just how huge she is. Just incredible and certainly gave me goosebumps to witness such beauty, gargantuan power and sheer size all in one mighty bird!
Great video, thanks for making it. Our family used to visit my Mom's best friend and Her family who had a summer house at the begining of the "runway" end of Sproat Lake. I have touched the Hulls of BOTH planes when I was a little boy. I have seen them take off and fly around the lake, it just seemed normal that they were there. Wounderous memories for me that I won't ever forget. It's too bad that they are leaving. That specific area will have a "void" in it from now on.....
Whoh, "Tobyn Burton Aviation Videos"! Your subject is camera-candy, but your videography is stunning! Viewers seem to have unusual levels of "ingrate" -- so on behalf of all viewing thank-you for capturing this moment, then posting on YT so we can all enjoy.
In the early 70s, our local airport had two Avengers and a P B Y that were converted to fire fighters. I remember the house windows would rattle when the PBY flew over. It was awesome!
What a beautiful plane. I’m so jealous of everyone here that got to see and explore it. It’s such a shame that these aircraft are so rare these days. Flying boats are so cool
Really excellent(!!) video; thank you Tobyn!! And the super glassy lake conditions, with low cloud on the hills… AMAZING!! We’re really lucky the engine needed changing; the operational life of the last flying Martin JRM Mars has been extended.
This a superb bit of filming!....right up there with Stephen Spielberg already; clear, stable and nicely framed all the way. Well done chaps from lill' ole Chippenham, Wiltshire, UK. The Philippine Mars Lives OK!
Glad this Martin Mars is headed to Arizona for preservation instead of the naval air museum at Pensacola, FL where it'd be subject to greater damage from storms such as hurricanes. Many of the large U.S. Navy aircraft at the Florida museum are displayed outdoors away from most of the public.
This was tremendous! Seeing this massive aircraft at speed, so high on the step and paced by the boat... spectacular video! Thanks so much for sharing.
So awesome! I remember a few years back going to Sproat Lake wanting to see the Martin. Wasn't allowed in the yard to get close but I got to see the Martin and the Philippine from a distance. Would have loved to see either of them moving around the lake
If you search Martin Mars Hawaii at Lake Elsinore CA. You will see what I saw in 2007. It was here for fire support for several weeks. It was absolutely huge and so graceful in the way it took off and landed. It seemed to float through the air at a surprisingly low airspeed. Truly impressive. The sound of the four massive radial engines is something I'll never forget.
I practically grew up on Sproat Lake. My uncle D. Hogeweide had a cabin on the lake and so every summer we would stay at the cabin and visit the bombers by boat just a short distance away.
Funny, I watched one of these going down Sproat Lake this past July as we left Port Albernie to Tofino for those awesome kimchi tacos. And now here i sit in my home in the Philippines, watching this video.
I believe the ShinMaywa US-2 a modern Japanese flying boat is being considered for the U.S. forces, Coast Guard I think. It's a fully modern version of this, just smaller, and has retractable landing gear. Fly's much further and longer duration than the Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter for rescue.
❤❤❤ i was looking for seaplanes to draw lately. I drew a piggy back the Maia and Mercury seaplanes. I this plane by image not by name but what caught me is the name Philippine Mar, and I am from the island of the 🇵🇭 . This is great. Thanks. 💙💙💙💙💙
I grew up next to the Martin Mars plant in Essex Maryland. Everyone's dad worked there. The launch ramp for the flying boats is enormous. This was also the site of the 175th Air National Guard, and they flew the A-10's everyday.
A big thank you to Darren Hansen for providing the boat to get this close up footage. Engine start is at 2:53! Also at 8:54 there is a birdstrike on the #3 engine!
from quebec just amazing tanks so mutch merci beaucoup
Kermit Weeks did a detailed tour in and around the Philippine Mars, great to see this old bird is still alive.

8:55 something popped and snapped. Probably some line from in the water. But something definitely snapped looking like a cable or a rope.
Spruce goose still the original queen of the flying boats
@@Soulessdeedsthat was actually a bird strike!

They haven't been up full bore for decades, as there is only 100LL left.
Thank you. Agreed, its a shame this is one of the last times the sound of these engines will be heard in Port Alberni.
Was in slave Lake ab working a bunch of fires back in the day and seen these in action dropping tons of water at a time on fires and wow man just fukn wow.

ICARO must be jealous today about this (beautiful)big brother 😊
That is some awesome footage! The Mars looks so good in this livery, I absolutely love it. Great shots of the startup and of the step taxi!
Thanks Jesse! Yeah, it's nice to finally capture the Philippine in its U.S. Navy colours.
It always amazes me that these planes are designed so beautifully to do fire work when they're called into service when needed
I'm 1976 I was 16 and was driving in New Hampshire when I saw a hand made sign, floatplane ride $ 5, i knock on the door and an old guy says follow me, little old plane on the lake, he took us up for 45/50 minutes . It was great.
Beautiful video of the Mars on the water - the best I've seen! The sequence of the step taxi was breathtaking as your boat tried to keep pace!
Thanks! Yeah, I think we were doing about 20-25 knots in the boat and the plane was easily doing 40+ knots more than that

Some of THE BEST footage I’ve ever seen.
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Apparently you haven't seen much 😂
What fantastic views & sound - nothing nowadays comes even close. So glad we still have the chance to view them in all their glory.
Majestic to see her pass by at speed. She wants to fly!!

Videography here is superb. Really captures the massive elegance of the big flying boats.
Thank you
What a wonderful, heart-warming video. The final flight will be an immensely sad spectacle for many and I wish the team every success.
Thank you, yeah, it will be a sad day when it flies for the last time.
Really excellent(!!) video; thank you Tobyn!! And the super glassy lake conditions, with low cloud on the hills… AMAZING!!

When he was a full open if you didn't see foam anymore she be airborn that would of been nice

Thank you! Well, I try to do my best with my amateur camcorder. It's very good for the moving boat shots.
Unbelievable footage, just beautiful!!
What a setting too.
The scale is amazing. These Water Air Craft are still some of the best Aero Engineering out there. Those guys designed these too last.
I wish I could see them flying indefinitely! So freakin' cool!
Me too
Who wanted to see that thing lift off?!
If even for a few metres
Strewth!
I was hoping!
👍👍👍
Thanks for this comment... I was thinking "Man.... Its gonna Run Out Of Fuel Before It Lift Off" now I know It Never Does
Howard Hughes did it and the goose was much much larger
Me!
Just beautiful. Not a flying boat, a flying SHIP!!👍👍
So Majestic! Thank you for sharing this with us!

What an absolutely amazing aircraft!!! That is one of the coolest planes I have ever seen!
The footage of the aircraft on step is absolutely excellent.
Thanks, it was hard to keep it stable.
Absolutely brilliant video, and some shots worthy of posters, thanks.

They are both Martin Mars aircraft. The two remaining are the Phillipine Mars, which went to Arizona, and the Hawaii Mars, which went to Victoria.
@@csabahollo6922 Sorry that's right. Thanks for the clarification 👍
I never cared for any of the boat planes but this one is gorgeous 😍

And some Lakers that grew up at Sproat lake in the 60’s which made a close bond with those planes joke that they share the same DNA with those planes

Wow, this is so awesome, we saw a MARS at Oshkosh. What a plane.
