The tomato (see pronunciation) is the edible, red fruit of Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato plant, which belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae. The species originated in Central and South America. The Nahuatl (Aztec language) word tomatl gave rise to the Spanish word "tomate", from which the English word tomato originates.

Cherokee purple is the name of a cultivar of tomato, that develops a fruit with a dark mahogany-red color while maintaining a somewhat greenish hue near the stem when mature for eating. It was one of the first of the darker color group of tomatoes sometimes described as "blacks", marketed by US seed companies to home gardeners. Cherokee Purple tomatoes are beefsteak in style. They are also notable for having a dense, juicy texture, with small seed locules irregularly scattered throughout the flesh. The comparatively dark interior color is enhanced by the tendency of the seeds to be surrounded by green gel.

You're absolutely right about not soaking homegrown tomatoes. You can get away with soaking the store-bought ones, but not fresh ones!

Don't remove the skin, or save it and blend it into a mush, then add to salsa or sauce.
"Better off eating raw tomatoes rather than cooking..."
Not true when it comes to the best benefits of tomatoes. According to new research (which is why he may not know), to get the best benefits from tomatoes, eat cooked with a little fat from a healthy source.

Is there a website that tells me when i can start plants and harvest them and exactly what plants for my zone? (South Dakota) I can't really find a good one. First garden setup this year - and yeah I'm a newbie - but better than never growing at all! lol - Trying to figure out harvest times for my area and if and what i can plant again - and if i can get another harvest in or whatever. uggh - it's a lot of work but worth it so far. Those tomatoes look great! We have about 5 different varieties - not sure when to harvest other than - when they get touched, they fall right off the plant - no tugging or cutting.

i would try farmers almanac, thats wat i use as far as tomato harvesting even if you pick them early they will continue to ripen! i sometimes pick them early before the birds, insects an blight get them! good luck let me know how things do for you! : )
