Me: "I will add a new variety of tomato to my garden every year til I die." Up to 9 now...
I got like 10ish varieties (most of them boring subvarieties of cherry, slicer, etc) in my garden this year but the city and neighbors nuked a good amount of them with herbicides 😭. At least a handful of them survived long enough to get seeds or cuttings from them.
@@beskamir5977 that’s horrible. Using herbicide is sinful but to kill someone else’s plants is criminal. You must have lots of self control not to slap some people
Hello from a former Randolph, NJ resident. Thank you for posting your video on your 7 top tomatoes. I actually wanted to add a new cherry variety to my garden. Well, I was sold quick on Supersweet 100 because of your post. I already found and planted one today. Thank you sooo much James. I’m now in Tampa Bay, FL and needless to mention I have a long season here. I totally enjoy your videos and Tuck is absolutely adorable, I enjoy seeing him. Thanks again for sharing your favs.😊

Last suggestion: get into the Dwarf Tomato Project. These tomatoes will change your life. They are amazing plants. Full-sized heirloom indeterminate quality tomatoes on 30 inch plants. I recommend Rosella Purple, Dwarf Emerald Giant, Tasmanian Chocolate, Adelaide Festival and Fred’s Tie Dye. They will change your whole approach to growing tomatoes.

@@markmason3535 thanks! Both are good, but BrandyFred is a poor producer for me. It doesn’t set a ton of fruit, whereas Fred’s Tie Dye is prolific. Now, I live in a very hard climate for tomatoes, whereas NJ (where I was born and raised) is a tomato producing Mecca thanks to agreeable temps, but that’s my experience. If the tomatoes produce well for me, I assume they’ll do even better for everyone else because my tomato conditions are a nightmare 😂
@@TheMillennialGardener What is the specific problem with your climate? Ours is extreme heat at times: we had 40c in June and July (100F+) and it hosed everything, barely got any tomatoes this year...

a word on the Soldacki: it's grown a lot in my country, we have continental towards mediterranean climate. They are called "јабучар" which roughly translated is "apple-like". The tomatoes do crack when it rains during the day and the sun shines bright afterwards. That's why it's best to water them after the sun sets. They are late producers (some years even in August), but they do produce a lot and massive tomatoes.

Zone 6b: PURPLE CHEROKEE !!! Large (Beefsteak) tomatoes with a purple(ish) color. They produce great and taste absolutely delicious !!

How is it for resisting skin cracking?
Poor producer for me last year when my other tomatoes were fine. And I didn't think much of the color...seems like I'm being marketed to. It's a reddish black color that kind of looks like it's going bad, not purple. Maybe I'll try again in the future and my experience was a one-off.
I used to grow the Super Sweet 100s but found that when you get a lot of rain, 90 percent of the tomatoes would split. Now I grow the Juliet Grape tomatoes. Resistant to splitting, indeterminate, good tasting and I get about 30 pounds of tomatoes per plant.

I had the same experience. Great flavor and great producer but lots of cracks.... When me greenhouse is finished I'll grow tons of them in there... Don't have to worry about too much water.

Another good tomato is an early determinate called Siletz. It was bred by Oregon State University to tolerate cool temps. It will set fruit even if lows dip into the 30’s. It actually enjoys nights in the 40’s. You can plant this earlier than your other tomatoes, and you can get great 6-8 ounce slicers a month ahead of your others. It will also set fruit in the winter if you have a sunny patio. I’ve been able to pick tomatoes in March from it by bringing it inside at night in our winters. The flavor is outstanding. Better than most indeterminates.
Thanks for sharing info on this tomato variety. Where I live, nights often are cold and damp most of the summer. Sounds like this tomato will grow well in my climate. I'm going to try this one next year.

@@leny_ragasa7010 Siletz is pretty easy to find with a Google search. I purchase mine through Victory Seeds, but I don’t know if they ship internationally. It has been around since the 90’s, so you should be able to find it online.

When I was a little girl, my grandmother's neighbor would pass over the fence a brown bag of cherry tomatoes. They were sweet and perfect to me - they were the only backyard tomatoes I had ever had. Those cherries are my definition of what a tomato should taste like. Well, I was at a tomato taste test table a few year ago and finally found a variety that tasted exactly like that memory. It's a hybrid called Bartelly and I HIGHLY recommend it.

That's funny the dog snacking on your cucumber I put some bonemeal in one of my planting totes for fertilizer , my wife let our dog out a min pin and she immediately jumped in the tote and started digging cause she smelled bone
No matter what varieties I might grow, I'll always have the traditional Large Red Cherry tomato. It makes 100's of tomatoes steadily, all season until frost. A few plants will bring you a few tomatoes daily, for every meal, all season. I do grow others too.
I grew a 2 pound Hungarian Heart this year! So glad you recommended those last year. It's fun to try new varieties. Thanks James and Tuck!

Over the last two years I've watched way more UA-cam than TV. I've learned a lot from you and others on Gardening. I should've been out in the garden with my grandparents when I was young. I might know as much as you.

Sungold is my favorite. I have 8 planted this year, they're 6 feet tall, and cranking out so much fruit it is unbelievable
I am bookmarking THIS LIST, with the helpful input from other gardeners who commented, so that I can review again at seed buying time. I'm growing 20+ varieties this year, I bought several at James Priglioni's suggestion, including Rosa de Berne, Lemon Boy, Yellow Pear, Super Sweet 100 and I am happy with all. Before I was only growing heirlooms, mainly what I harvested seeds from gourmet grocer tomatoes I tasted. But what tastes good often doesn't produce well. I appreciate the tip to mix in hybrids, and the best yielders, for insurance to always have a productive harvest. It's May 19 and I already have lots of tomatoes! Gonna re-watch and read the comments again and again.

Hybrid Big Mama Roma does absolutely amazing! Especially this year, they are so big it's hard to tell they're romas!
Love the sweet million/sweet 100, delicious and reliable.
And a new one for me this year that I am loving the taste of, the way the plant grows (sooooo easy to prune and trellis!), and just overall growth, production and esthetic...the Tropical Sunset Tomato.
I don't grow blueberries any more because my Pancho Pup would find all the berries and eat them :). Love seeing Tuck in the garden. Your enthusiasm about your garden is contagious.

We’re in zone 6, and my all time favorite this year is the German Lunchbox. It’s a light red (pinkish) plum sized heirloom. It’s incredibly prolific and so delicious right off the vine. I’ve been snacking on them daily since mid summer. Even now in late August they are sending out many many new blossoms.
My favorite is JULIETTE grape tomato. It has fabulous flavor, has firm beefy fruit. Grows tall and is prolifically producing all summer (July 4th) late into the fall. I'm in zone 6. It grows nicely in large deep pots, even on a partial-sun (60%) patio if space is limited. It's a small hybrid from the roma variety. Great for salads, omelets, pizza, soups and stews. You can even slice a few into canned soup or your jarred ragu for a great flavor pick-up.

My top 7 as of now are: Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Big Rainbow, Prudens Purple, Carolina Gold, Black Brandywine, and Celebrity.
This season I'm adding some: Paul Robeson, Abe Lincoln, Kelloggs breakfast, Hillbilly, German Green, Terra Cotta, Black Beauty, Pink Tie-dye, and Carbon.

Kellogg’s breakfast is a beauty! (Potato leaf and largely unblemished). Cherokee Carbon good sub for Cherokee Purple. Pruden’s Purple.
My favorite 7 varieties of tomatoes to grow for flavor & production are Emerald Apple (my all time favorite for sandwiches), Ananas Noir, Purple Cherokee, Arkansas Traveler, White Tomesol, Sun Sugar cherry and Principles Borghese. It's hard to pick just 7! This is the first year I grew a white tomato and only tried it because the seeds were a free bonus packet in my order. The White Tomesol not only grew huge but was loaded with medium and large fruits with a faint pink blush when ripe and the taste was very good.

We stumbled onto that Supersweet 100 cherry at a nursery this year, and WOW, have I been blown away by how much it produces, despite my neglect!
I did too, didn’t get it in the ground until Mid July. And the thing ended up 8 ft tall and 6 ft wide.

A black tomato of any variety, sprinkled with cherry wood smoked salt is a match made in heaven.

My forever #1 is the German Queen. She produces beautiful tomatoes until frost and is my favorites for tomato sandwiches. Similar texture and size to German Johnson fruit, but a heartier plant and more disease resistant in my experience.
I am still learning a lot about gardening, so I appreciate your videos. Most of my tomatoes did not do very well this past year except the yellow pears were very prolific and very delicious!

My favorite is the Sun Gold! The sweetness cannot be beat! I also have Sweet 100;s, Purple Cherokee, and many others. Nothing beats a Jersey Tomato!!!!!
This year I tried the Tiffen Mennonite a slicer and they are HUGE! In zone 6b, all are over a lb & supposedly has produced the largest tomato. I picked it early and it doesn’t have to turn fully light red/pink to eat. Love it on sandwiches!
Thanks to you and your encouragement, I have decided to test myself and ability these past few next months. I am going to clear out a portion of our yard, possibly renew the fence, and start a garden, but all for a surprise for my sister. Her birthday is Nov 19th, but I am working on clearing the space right now, deciding to renew the fencing or not, and to work on plant beds!! I been watching your videos, and keeping notes of things. Sun gold is definitely a great tasting tomato but there is one that's even sweeter. It's the snow white tomato. It's cherry in size like the sungold but it's a creamy white with a tinge of yellow. You have to try it!!! It's amazing!!!

I grew these last year Pamela. Easily the best tasting cherry tomato I've ever grown. That said, there was a point in late plant life where they just began not tasting great. When they were at their peak they were amazing.

I love that you chose both heirloom AND hybrid tomatoes. I hate it when gardeners are "heirloom snobs". While it is great to keep the seeds from heirlooms, hybrids are often more reliable and just as tasty as heirlooms. I think every gardener should always grow both for variety. Every day with a James and Tuck video is a better day. I knew we'd see him finding a cucumber to munch while you talked.
Completely agree with this. I grow heirlooms because most taste better however they can struggle during the tougher tomato years. I always have hybrids to make sure I get fresh tomatoes no matter how rough the season is. I do find heirlooms to be generally a richer flavor than most hybrids but hybrids tend to produce better and longer due to their disease resistance.

A Canadian gardener who does a large seedling sale every spring said that, when asked, buyers insisted they wanted Heirloom varieties, yet some of her heirloom sales weren't particularly stellar. She discovered what people meant when they said "heirloom" was really "great tasting", so she shifted her mix and has better sales now.
I tried the over 15 varieties this year and obviously you inspired me to grow the Costoluto Genovese. My most prolific constant producer is the Cosmonaut Volkov, gotta try it next year!

Tribe’s Tobique is one of my favourite tomatoes. Discovered growing wild along the Tobique river in New Brunswick and when genetics were done , it was found that it had not ever been catalogued. Good for Mr. Tribe and the rest of us. Good acidity and a terrific sandwich or salad tomato. Really delicious.
Great video and I love the back yard! I agree about the Supersweet cherry having a great flavor as well. One tomato we always want to grow that's a mid size hybrid is the Wisconsin 55. Semi-determinate and probably the best tasting tomato we've tried.
Up in Ontario Canada the sweet million is a delicious and high yielding variety for cold regions. Always mulch heavily!
Great video!! I get short summers and 7 months of snow. So where I live I have tried lots of different tomato varieties and purple Cherokee so far is the best in my area to grow but always looking for new one!! This year I'm growing black Japanese truffle and it's the best tasting.
Great tomato varieties! Highly recommend my favorites - Black Krim, Super Sweet 100 and Sun Gold. First time growing Black Krim from seeds with a single stem vertical growing, so awesome and my harvest turned out to be a very successful season. Definitely growing all 3 in 2022!! I 100% agree with Rose de Berne, picked when the sun heated it up and eat it, its so sweet i love it! I really like Brad's atomic, its kind of a plum, not mushy, and very nice looking! Carbon and black seaman were very productive and good! I will try some of the hybrid you mention, and you are right about this passion about 'heirloom'.. hybrids were created not for nothing!

One of my favorite varieties is the Carbon tomato. Just insanely delicious. I only saw plants for sale one year though, and I'm generally too busy to take care of seedlings, so hoping I'll see it around again. Also Brandywine OTV, Mortage Lifter Radiator Charlie, Cherokee Purple, Yellow Pear, and I always grow a Better Bush just because they're super reliable, never seem to get disease, and ripen faster than the heirlooms.
My two best tomatoes this year have been the super sweet 100’s and the darkstar hybrid by burpee. Dependable, prolific producer, and amazing flavor. (Newark, DE - zone 7A)

Yes they are amazing, I even kept a piece that grew over winter indoors on a windowsill flawlessly and still produced! I couldn't help but keep it going right thru the 2nd summer this time taking cuttings to grow two more plants.
This is awesome, thank you! Real-life reviews are so helpful! My garden is urban so space is precious. I have 3 sungolds in growbags. In the ground, 3 lemon boy and 3 big beef. First year trying big beef but lemon boy is so reliable I'll always grow at least 2 of them.
I love the Sungold. Interestingly enough, I grew 2 big beef tomato plants this year, about 20 feet apart with identical soil, sun, watering feeding, etc. One did vert little, had great difficulty with blight and insects. Produce only a couple tomatoes. The other plant was the star of the garden, produced dozens of large, tasty tomatoes, with only mild blight and insect problems. Same garden, same conditions and weather. It taught me an important lesson. There is no perfect tomato, one that does well in one location one season may fail the following year, or even the same year. Like financial assets, it is best to diversify your plants. Next year I will have 17 different plants, some with a second planting 3 weeks after the first planting so they will have different weather experience and won't all ripen at the same time (they are determinates).
Thorburn's Terra Cotta and Black Beauty are my favorites. Terra Cotta is super productive too. I got 150 tomatoes from one plant of medium sized tomatoes.

I am using your twine & clip support on my indeterminates, love it. Growing Brandywine, Purple Cherokee, Berkley Tie-Die (a volunteer from last year 😉) and Roma’s. 1st year in a while w/o cherry type. I’ll try the super sweet 100s next year.
At this point my favorite tomatoes are whichever I can get to grow. Can’t wait to try some of these.

Same, I always kill the one somehow that I’ve tried grown from seed. I bought some starters from the store this year and they are insanely huge plants. I’ll eventually figure it out I guess. 😜

@@melissasullivan1658 I had my notebook out to jot stuff down and compare my tomato list for next yr. I wrote down Grand Marshall that produces above 90 degrees. (never grew it, but have it down to try.) If you tried it how does it do?
Last year was my first time doing an in-ground garden. Lemon Boys and Sweet 100s were by far my most resilient tomatoes. Even when the plants looked terrible, the lemon boys were still producing. They tasted surprisingly good too.

I grew 15 varieties last season and one that surprised me were the White Currant tomatoes. They were a crowd pleaser, and most seemed to like those best. Even my son, who isn't a tomato lover, enjoyed them. Extremely prolific, some cracking and late blight though. My personal favorite for canning was Tappy's heritage. My overall favorite was a pink brandywine, HUGE fruit that were absolutely delicious. I have a new series of 10 varieties to try this year.

Agree 100 percent on the Sun Golds. My favs that I always grow. Marglobe Supreme..super pretty and flavorful, Jaunne Flamme...orange salad tomato with a citrus sweet flavor, Amish Paste...huge and flavorful, Barry's Crazy Cherry...first year growing and wow...super sweet and prolific, Purple Russian...a juicy paste tomato that's very tasty Mortgage Lifter, Reif Red Heart paste, and Silver Fir Tree...an OK tasting determinate tomato but the very first to ripen in my zone 4 garden. I try new varieties every year too like Napa Chardonnay which is a good sweet cherry.

I suggest growing the Blondkopchen cherry tomato if you haven’t already. I am growing them for the first time this year and I absolutely love it. It’s very prolific and it has great flavor. It produces enormous clusters of fruit. It would grow beautifully in your food forest. Give it a try. 🍅🍅

I got absolutely hooked on the sungold / sunsugar last year! The black krim and black cherry have been really strong producers for me as well this year and will probably keep all 4 and rotate out other varieties in order to find the perfect mix for Pittsburgh
I think it was a Krim out of one of my families gardens I tried last year that I thought was pretty good flavored.
With a backyard like that I'd sleep outside!

This year my favorite has been Mortgage Lifter. I’ve gotten some huge tomatoes and great production. Absolutely love them for tomato sandwiches, BLTs, etc.
I love this video and will absolutely be adding quite a few of these to my garden next year! I tried beefsteak, cherokee purple, jetstar and a few other new varieties this year and just didn't get much except for probably close to my weight in grape tomatoes. I can't wait to try some! Specifically looking at the Super Sweet 100, Chef's Choice Orange, Sun Gold Cherry, and Lemon Boy! Let's be honest, I'll probably try the Soldaki, Rise de Berne, and Costoluto Genovese, too! :)
I would LOVE to see you do more like this with other varieties of veggies! Cucumbers, squash/zuc, melons, peas or beans.. all sorts! I've been looking and looking for great varieties, but keep buying ones that just don't mesh for me. Also, don't get me if I missed it, but I would love an Apple video! Talk about all your tree types and the pros/cons of each variety!
I grew Silvery Fir Tree for the first time this year. I was very pleased with the mini beefsteak ornamental determinate tomato 🍅

I was new to this variety this year, but they are up over 7 feet tall, they don't feel determinate.
Loved this video. This year I tried many sorts of different tomatoes myself looking for something new. What I will never grow again: Painted Lady and Wherokowhai tomatoes. They don't produce well. My new favorites are Indigo Rose cherry tomatoes (strong sharp tomato flavor as well as being quite pretty with their eggplant purple and red tones) and Garden Peach (larger than a regular tomato-soft velvety matte finish outside and a peachy yellow inside. Highly prolific and huge!). I am in Zone 9B.
My favorite this year is the Bodacious Tomato. It’s the most beautiful large tomato and it’s delicious. Love Tucker BTW - he reminds me of my Baxter that passed 2 years ago. ❤️
Dude!! Super Sweet 100 are something I stumbled upon (I live in north Florida) and it just tastes great and I’ve been picking several like twice a day once they get going for a few years now. Sun Gold are also great producers for this region. Gotta try these others now! So stoked when you called out the 100’s first! Chocolate Sprinkles is a great producer for all the same reasons for this region.
Costoluto Genovese is the best tasting slicer tomato in my garden this year, but Porkchop is probably a close second. It is also beautiful, recommend trying if you haven't before!
I had great success with "Cherry Red" this year. Amazing production, no disease issues, and very sweet.
Our full size favorites are Berkeley Tie Dye Pink, White Tomesol, and Cherokee Purple. Our favorite cherry tomatoes are Barry's Crazy Cherry, White Cherry, Black Cherry, and Cherry Falls. And our favorite dwarf tomato is Orange Hat. Can't wait to see some of them in your food forest 5 years from now! Much love from South Jersey!
Agree about Sun Gold - they are amazing, and I didn't even care for cherry tomatoes before! I bring the extras into work and everyone grabs them! For slicers, I love Paul Robeson, Black Krim (have found a lot of similarities between those two), Chef's Choice Orange and Brandywine. Also old school San Marzano's do well for me. I have also decided to only grow for taste and not necessarily just for productivity - I would rather get 5 absolutely crazy delicious tomatoes from a plant vs. 10-15 "pretty good" ones...but that's just me. Stuff you could never get in a store or even most farmer's markets. Thank you for another great video and I will look into your other varieties!
I really had to reassess this year, I tried several different varieties and they failed miserably. I know from previous seasons what did well in my climate and I will grow more of those in the future and then perhaps try a few different types . That way, I'll still get tomatoes and maybe discover something great in the process.

Watching this to help decide what tomatos for this year. Last year I grew lemon boy and actually only got one tomato from it. On the other hand I grew Cherokee pink and chef’s choice black f1 and got many great huge tomatoes.
We grew the Soldacki and Rose de Berne this year on your recommendation and like them both. Our very favorites this year are the Paul Robeson and Dr. Wyche.
Where did you get the seeds
@@melinda3196 The Soldacki and Paul Robeson were from Fedco Seeds. I also have Paul Robeson seeds from MI Gardener. The Dr. Wyche’s seeds were from Baker Creek and the Rose de Berne were from High Mowing Seeds.
The Robeson's are awesome for sure.
