Hey my friend growing season. Is everything you listed edible for tomatos or plants. So if i throw the fungicide on my rosemary will washing it be sufficient
Richard English I don’t use any chemicals in my garden. I use liquid copper as a fungicide, which is naturally derived. You shouldn’t eat food that you just sprayed with it, but generally within 24 hours, it is ok to eat after you wash it off in the sink. You have to make sure you are getting a good quality copper concentrate, though. I don’t use premixed sprays. I make them myself in a pump sprayer.
@@TheMillennialGardener In terms of taste, flavour and quality; How is brandy wine tomato is in comparison with saint Pierre tomato and san marzano tomato .??
Here I am, with my mouth watering at 3 A.M.
Hey, it could be worse. I got stuck in a Bill Burr UA-cam hole the other night!
It's hard to find good tomato reviews on youtube, but you've got it nailed. Thanks for doing this. Really comprehensive and descriptive. I know what I'll be sowing in my garden next year now!
Planted brandywine pink yesterday. Can’t wait.
I grew both red and pink brandywine tomatoes this year. I’m surprised at how your red looked. Mine did not have any of those large gel seed cavities. My reds were way bigger than my pinks too. Love these tomatoes, they have been the best tasting tomatoes I have ever tasted so far. I’m trying the Cherokee purple next year, and I will find out how good those are. Thank you for sharing your experience
I love your videos! Your gardening experience is inspiring to me! I am growing all of those varieties in my Burlington North Carolina garden!
Cherokee purples are actually known to make really large tomatoes. If you’re growing for size you can allow a few mega blooms to form tomatoes, and cull off the rest of the tomatoes. You’ll absolutely get 1-2 pounders.
Cherokee Purple are very poor performers in my climate, unfortunately. They seem to struggle with humidity, and they have some of the worst flower drop. I’ve never had them get very large, despite the plants not holding many fruits. I’m sure it is possible to get the odd 1 lb tomato here and there, but I wouldn’t recommend them for size or yield. I am having better luck with Chef’s Choice Purple, which is a hybridized version than approximates Cherokee Purple, but sets literally 4x the fruit. I would recommend giving that a try if you live in a place with warm, humid nights.
@@TheMillennialGardener hey brother, I live in Central Florida so warm and humid is my middle name lol. I feel terrible that you’ve had those results with the Cherokee man. I just have the complete opposite. I’ve been growing them on and off for 13 years now. The only time I’ve ever had issues with them, I was having the same issues with all my maters so it wasn’t a variety thing. Right now I’ve got four Cherokee purples growing alongside three red brandywines. The Cherokees are wildly out performing the brandywine. One plant has 30+ fruit set so far, and none of them have been dropping flowers. Again, it’s a bummer to hear about your outcomes, but I’m glad you’ve found another one that performs for ya.
@@TheMillennialGardener thanks for replying btw. Love the channel.
I grew one Cherokee 3 springs ago. It was the best tomato I ever tasted. After everything died back in the Florida summer heat, the Cherokee popped back up in November and lo and behold grew a fall crop. I babied it through fall and winter and summer and lo again It came back to life in the fall. I had a perennial tomato plant. It was on its third fall when I was away, and a frost ended it.
It was particularly prone to foliage disease and fruit tops splitting which is common on most YT videos.
And I had to realize it was ripe while the top was still green and pick it before it was over-ripe.
My Cherokees looked more like your Black Brandywine. I don't put chemicals on my garden, so it has to make its own way. I will use some neem etc... this season for the 1st time and see if the organics are all they're cracked up to be.
Pests and disease are just so much more prevalent than they used to be here. My first-time cucumbers grew profusely. I got the 1st pickins, then the pickle worms got into the rest of my cukes as well as squash crop before I realized there WERE pickle worms, and once they're in it's too late. They're a pre-treat only pest apparently.
Pink tomatoes are the tastiest in my opinion! Pink Girl is my personal favorite.
I agree in general. My favorite tomatoes are usually pink. I like acidic tomatoes, and I find pink tomatoes usually have the best balance of "sweet" and "acidic." What's strange is my least favorite tomatoes usually tend to be the red ones 😂
I am so grateful for your video today, three years after you posted it. I REALLY enjoy tomatoes but the acidity has been preventing me for a long time. I really needed to find tomatoes that weren't going to wreak havoc on my esophagus with retaliatory heartburn. I'm so glad to now know what I can expect out of those ugly smokey true blacks I'm growing! And to think that I found this while looking for tomato wine tasting videos... man, the internet is weird... so am I.
Seeds ordered and can’t wait! Thanks for the video
Starting my two young Cherokee purples in the ground today! Never even tried one yet, can’t wait.
Best of luck!
Dude I dont even like raw ripened tomatoes and your last two tomato reviews makes me want to try them raw just one more time. :)
I like fried green and I grow them to ripen for my son and wife.
Keep it up - these review vids are excellent.
I drooled thru the whole video...You tasted my 2 favs, my ultimate tomato is the Cherokee Purple followed by the Pink BW. Great looking tomatoes and you summed up my thoughts to a tee. Good Job!
Laurie Rector thank you! My main tomato plants are pretty much done at this time of year and I miss them terribly. Have you had Brandywine Yellow? This was a standout to me this year and blew me away. So good!
@@TheMillennialGardener Yes, I have one plant. So far only one tomato but it was delicious. The skin was a little thick which was my only minor complaint. I'm going to eat my first Pink Brandywine today....it weighed in at a whopping 1 lb 11oz. I've been babying my plants along and so far not blight or leaf spot. Found my first baby tomato worm today....can't believe I've been lucky this year to go so long without seeing one.
Laurie Rector yes, the Brandywine Yellow is a stingy bearer and the plants were very susceptible to disease, but the few I had were worth it. I liked the tough skin. It didn’t split like the others and it survived longer on my countertop.
That is a monster tomato! Use BT Concentrate for the worms. I had a hornworm explosion 2 weeks ago. I sprayed everything down with BT three times in 5 days and everything was killed. Many dried up bodies hanging from plants and no sign of any worms since.
I am growing both this year. Thanks for your detailed review.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! Growing Cherokee Purple for the first time this year and I can't wait to try them!
Paul L they’re fantastic. You won’t be disappointed.
Just watch out for the blight !
@@TheMillennialGardener I was....hate it

@@DeadEyeRabbit Mine were terrible. Weak in taste, terrible output, all kinds of imperfections.
What brand of seeds or plants did you use for the Pink Brandywine and Cherokee Purple? Thanks!
Great presentation 👏
I’m with you. I have a hard time picking a “favorite tomato”. But last year I drew the Cherokee purple for the first time and edit for the first time. Hands-down it’s been my favorite.
Great looking tomatoes!! I was waiting for that uncontrollable “mmm” sound to happen and it finally did. I can’t wait for mine to ripen so I can start tasting. I think you’ve sold me on the Cherokee Purple for next year.
Congrats of how much your channel has grown!! You’ll hit 100K before long, I just know it!
zeppypaige thank you! I hope so. The past month has been great for growth. I’m very excited about it. It really motivates me to produce more content.
You will love Cherokee Purple, I promise. Just make sure to plant it as early as possible because it quits producing in the heat. It sets its fruit in early and mid spring when nights are cooler.
Thanks for the tips! Happy growing!
Great looking my butt. Those are pitiful tomatoes. They are cracked and off color, only the bottom half is eatable.
I just planted a Cherokee I can't wait thanks for the review
Thanks for watching!
Great video thanks for sharing
This was helpful. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I like the Brandywine Reds. When I think Pink Tomatoes I think of the garbage at the store. But I’ll try it since your the second video I saw today with the Brandywine Pink.
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
I've grown them all but the red. Haven't tried that one yet but, I have a really hard time with the black and the Cherokee purple. They didn't produce a lot and most of them would split. but boy the ones that did make it, wow yummy. Still though,. the pink is my favorite for the Brandywines. I'm loving your videos... So new scriber! Big Hugs 🤗💖
I didn't have good results with Red. It produced poor quality fruits. Not uniform and didn't ripen properly. It may just be too hot here for them. If you aren't having luck with Cherokee Purple, try the dwarf Rosella Purple. They're every bit as good as Cherokee Purple, but you can grow a plant in 2 square feet or less. They're amazing.
ooh okay I'll have to try the Rosella Purple. Thank you!
Those tomatoes look good my friend wow juice enjoy for some reason I cannot send pictures of my black Madeira kk i try eny way enjoy your self end thanks for on other video thanks for sharing your videos 👏👏👏
Carlos Rivera you can upload your image to Imgur or another file hosting site and post a link in the comments, too.
Thank you for a great review. I grow Red Brandywine and Cherokee Purples and wondered about the Pink and Black Brandywine.
I'm not a fan of acidic tasting tomatoes so you've spared me the trouble of growing Pinks, and looks like Blacks aren't worth growing over Cherokees.
Keep in mind it's just my personal taste. Pink is by far my favorite and I didn't really care for red. Black, to me, just didn't taste good. It's possible my soil is too new and not acidic enough to develop that great tomato flavor yet. I really love Cherokee Purple, but my favorite tomatoes are the acidic types. If you're a fan of Cherokee Purple, I urge you to try Rosella Purple. In my opinion, it is superior to Cherokee Purple. Cherokee Purple has this habit of having green shoulders that you have to cut off. Rosella Purple doesn't have this problem, the flavor itself is almost identical but it's even sweeter.
@@TheMillennialGardener Flavour is all about personal taste, but you have given good descriptive reasons as to why you like /dislike a particular variety, and that has made your video very useful.
My father (who is a die hard, red only, tomato person) even likes Cherokee Purple, so I rate it quite highly just on that alone.
It is hit and miss with many 'black' tomatoes (like Black Russian & Krim), so it's not only you that doesn't have success every season.
The black is a result of direct sun, so if the tomato itself doesn't get sun as required, the taste won't be as sweet as expected.
I can get Rosella Purple here in Australia, so I will definitely give it a go next season. It's also a dwarf plant(?).
I've heard good things about 'Carbon' as well. I'll be trying to source it here from a friend, but I believe it's common over in the States.
Apparently just as good as Cherokee, but more prolific and easier to get success with taste.
I purchased pink brandywine and cherokee purple seeds after watch your video.
Lily McLouth nice! Are they for next year, or do you live in an area where you have a long season and can start seeds now?
@@TheMillennialGardener yes, they are for next year. I have brandywink yellow,I love the texture and flavor.
Thank you for your information.
Lily McLouth awesome! Brandywine Yellow was my favorite of the year. Amazing texture and flavor but with beautifully shaped fruits and split resistant.
How did they do this year?
You need to try Cherokee Green. Seriously.
There are so many varieties out there. I try to plant 15-20 new ones each year. It's a Craig LeHoullier tomato, so it must be good. I may look into it next year.
Have you done a taste test with the big rainbow?
I grow brandy wine pink every year as I think they are the best tomatoes I have ever tasted. I will grow the cherokee next year or maybe this year If i can find them in a nursery
I love Brandywine Pink, as well. I think it's better than Cherokee Purple, but they're too completely different flavors. Cherokee Purple is very sweet with almost no acid. If you love Brandywine Pink, you need to try Brandywine Yellow. It is the BEST tomato I've ever had. Another incredible one is Dwarf Emerald Giant. It's almost as acidic as a lemon, so if you love acidic tomatoes, this is mind blowing.
i wish i could taste the tomatoes from the screen ...
Ha, I just planted a three heirlooms, one Cherokee purple, a pink Brandywine and a black krim.
Now I know what to expect from the Cherokee purple and pink Brandywine.
Any experience with black Krim?
And thanks for your informative videos. They're a pleasure to watch.
Nisn Ber thanks so much! I purchased Black Krim seeds 2 years ago off the shelf at Home Depot but got bad seed. What grew was some tasteless, small red tomato instead, so clearly it was mispacked in the factory. Unfortunately, I have never had that variety.
Which was your favorite out of those 3? Black Krim is my favorite out of the 3 IMO.
Those tomatoes look ace. There is nothing nicer than a flavorful tomato in summer.
I plan on growing dwarf tomatoes our aussie summer after contacting patrina at the dwarf tomato project, who have a great selection. Can hardly wait.
mr ed I must confess I take the nicer looking tomatoes for the videos. They don’t all look this nice, I assure you!
I’m glad you got into contact with her. That was great luck. You’re going to like them. They’re great plants.
Brand new to the tomato gardening world. Hope it's not a silly question but.... Can you use heirloom varieties for fried green tomatoes and do they taste any better than grocery store green? Not my primary goal but I do enjoy eating some fried green tomatoes every now and then. Thanks!
Subbed🎊
I don't eat a lot of green tomatoes, but in my experience, if you pick a tomato green, I don't think it matters that much. I've never had green tomatoes from the grocery store, but when it comes to my garden tomatoes, "green" is "green" regardless of variety. Now, if you really want to blow your mind, get yourself a green tomato that stays green when ripe like Dwarf Emerald Giant and use them. THAT is phenomenal. I don't care for fried, but what I like doing is mixing cornmeal with salt, pepper and oregano and breading them with that, then baking them in the oven. Oooo...
@@TheMillennialGardener thank you! 🤤🤤🤤 I was looking for the recommended cultivar and stumbled across the Green Zebra and Chocolate Stripes. Looks like I'll have 3 more choices 🙂

And now I want to grow me some brandywine pink and cherokee purple!!! :)
toekstraatman haha thanks. It is a fairly newish channel started last year. It is pretty tough to build an audience organically. But I appreciate the positive feedback. Feel free to share the videos! Thanks for watching.
Perhaps most people just want to see a face with the voice.
I'll be promoting your channel on the Dutch veggie growing fora for sure!
toekstraatman I’d just scare people away with my face 🤣. Thank you!
I’m a little confused about which tomato seeds I have. One pk is labeled “Brandywine” and described as a pink tomato but in the photo it appears to look red (outer skin color only, no inside photo). The other package of seeds that I have reads “Brandywine Red” but the outer skin looks pink. Do you have a guess or know what type of Brandywine tomato I have for the one that just says Brandywine on the package?
Where did you purchase the seed from? It sounds like they did a poor job labeling. My guess is the Brandywine variety that's described as "pink" is Brandywine Pink (although I couldn't tell you the strain as there are several) and Brandywine Red is just that - Brandywine Red. I wouldn't go by the photos. I recommend purchasing your tomato seeds through Tomato Growers or Victory Seed because they do a very good job labeling them and they have multiple strains so you know exactly what you're getting.
I know this one is a tasting but I have a question on gardening. Ever since I've pruned my tomatoes it seems like they were stunted.. would you know a video to send me to or advice for it?
You may have shocked them if you pruned them heavily. I suggest fertilizing. I take a 5 gallon bucket and add 2 green scoops of MiracleGro Tomato (18-18-22, NOT All Purpose) with the scooper that comes with the soluble fertilizer and 3-4 tablespoons of fish fertilizer. Then fill it with water. A 5 gallon Lowes or Home Depot bucket filled to within 2 inches from the top will feed 6 plants. I like doing this every 7 days.
Rebecca Brzezowski this is how I do it.

@@TheMillennialGardener thank you so much. This is my first year gardening and was an over achiever perfectionist. Thank you so much for the help. I've even done the aspirin water too hoping that would bring them back. So I do thank you so much for the response quickly.
Rebecca Brzezowski sure, glad to help. My advice to you is to not go too big too quickly. There is a lot to learn with tomatoes alone, and failure is honestly the best way to learn. Every year we get a little better.
@@TheMillennialGardener I do understand. So thank you again for the help
I think we have the same taste in tomato’s 😉
It's tough not to love these! Thanks for watching.
is the brandywine black a hybrid combining the brandywine with the black krim?
Ryan Z no, it is an old heirloom tomato. It is less common than the others. Its flavor, in my opinion, is not on par with the pink or yellow, which are incredible.
huge fan of the cherokee purple myself! Growing the cherokee carbon hybrid this year. heard great reviews about it, have you had it before?
Ryan Z funny you should ask, I grew it last year. Here is my review from last summer:
ua-cam.com/video/E1Zx_4-BSAc/v-deo.html
you can't bet the Cherokee Purple for taste, but the last time I Planted the 4 Cherokee Purple plants I only got 5 tomates off of the 4 plants. So you can get 2 or 3 time that many off one Brandywine pink plant!
The Blacks always split. I usually stick with Red or Pink. I use Pinks with Jersey Heirlooms for my sauce due to both of their meatiness and sweetness
Edit My Pinks are sweet as can be and always a fav in my neighborhood
I had that exact problem. I have NEVER grown a tomato that split more than Black Brandywine. Maybe that's why I didn't like the flavor. It was so prone to cracking, it could have been souring in my heat and humidity. The cracking was so bad I honestly threw most of them away. It was not a good performer here on the rainy coast.
@@TheMillennialGardener I'm in perhaps the best climate in the US for tomatoes. The Garden State or Armpit of the nation, NJ. My pinks are sweet along with Cherokees. Even my Jersey's are sweet but I've been growing from year after year for 2 decades. before Rutger's even came out with the newer ones several years ago. Unfortunately I think I need to start from scratch this year as my neighbor who I had been growing with/for passed away. He took care of the seeds and notes which we did not grow last year for numerous reasons, well except for a couple late plantings. It took a bit to get folks to try the 'ugly tomatoes' but when they did I couldn't grow enough(space)
I have to say, the cherokee purple is the 3rd one from the left, sorry.
Can we buy these in Az
These are sold in any state online.
I swear you mixed up the black Brandywine and the Cherokee purple.
I grow Cherokee purple and it looks exactly like your black Brandywine.
Cherokee purple tomatoes typically have green shoulders.
He definitely did
The white tissue on the inside is due to low potassium uptake.
I’m still on the quest to find a better tasting tomato than Black Krim. It’s the best I’ve grown in my area. I plant different varieties every year and Black Krim is the one that I always replant.
I have not grown Black Krim. However, my favorites to date are Brandywine Pink (Sudduth Strain), Brandywine Yellow, Dwarf Emerald Giant and Rosella Purple. All four tomatoes are knock-outs, in my opinion. If you like high acid, Dwarf Emerald Giant is amazing. Rosella Purple is very sweet with no acid. I find it very similar to Cherokee Purple, but superior. It ripens better than Cherokee Purple and is sweeter. The best tasting tomato I've ever had, bar none, is Brandywine Yellow. The yields are stingy, but...WOW.
@@TheMillennialGardener I’ve grown pink brandywine a few times that I’ve picked up in nurseries and grown Cherokee Purple many times. I have some Suddeth Strain and yellow platfoot brandywine I started from seed this year. I hope the yellow brandywine isn’t stingier than the pink. The pinks I’ve grown in the past are bad about bloom drop in my heat. I try to get them in ground ASAP and shake them daily early in the day while it’s cooler to try to get better pollination. I will try those other 2 you mentioned. I’ve got 19 different heirlooms growing now. Most are Craig LeHoulliers favorites. Joe Stemple from the Joe Gardener show says Black Krim is his favorite for taste. I’m sure soil and climate affect taste depending on your location. Dry climates will usually always produce sweeter fruit and vegetables. I never water my melons when they start ripening to not water down the sugars. I’ve also noticed a decline in tomato taste when we get a odd year with too much rainfall during harvesting time. That doesn’t happen often here though.
I'd be curious how adding Yellow Brandywine to this test would fare.
Lisa I actually did that in a previous video. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/bNpbOa-AmGI/v-deo.html
@@TheMillennialGardener Yes I've seen it but I guess I'd be curious how Yellow would rank against Purple - tho they are different categories. I get that. My Yellows aren't even flowering at this point.
I grow tomatoes in a shocking amount of shade! Have a couple in pots and will try moving them.
Lisa that will come down to personal preference. Brandywine Yellow and Cherokee Purple taste wildly different, so it comes down to whether you prefer chocolate or vanilla. If you ask me what tastes better, Brandywine Yellow, but that’s my personal taste preference and the yields are horrible. It is such a fabulous tomato with such poor yields. You’ll get better production from Cherokee Purple for sure.
@@TheMillennialGardener My 3 Brandywine Yellows 'just' are showing signs of infant flower buds. :| Hopefully they'll have a spurt but this is taking time.

Where's your salt shaker?
crazy clown no need. They’re that good!
Jimmy Buffett has it.
Is that the true Red Brandywine? Does it have potato leaves?
Brandywine Red is a regular leaf tomato. The "classic" Brandywine most people think of is the Brandywine Pink. My Brandywine Pink is the traditional Sudduth strain, which is potato leaf. That's the brandywine most think of when they think "Brandywine Tomato."
@@TheMillennialGardener The reason I asked is that there are potato leaf and regular leaf tomato plants that are both marketed as "Red Brandywine." I have grown both and found the regular leaf one is way better. Some say the potato leaf one is an imposter. According to Amy Goldman in "The Heirloom Tomato," the regular-leaved Red Brandywine is the "true Brandywine." I would have a hard time choosing between the Sudduth Pink and the Landis Valley Red. For me, the Red Brandywine had more zip than the Pink Brandywine, which makes me believe that where and how you grow them makes a big difference.
@@capeflattery6179 I have never heard of a potato leaf Brandywine Red. To my knowledge, the true Red Brandywine is a regular leaf, and the true Pink Brandywine is a potato leaf. The true Brandywine Yellow is also a potato leaf. I don't think I've ever grown a potato leaf tomato that didn't have amazing flavor. Every potato leaf I grow seems to be gold, but yields are often low on potato leaf varieties.
@@TheMillennialGardener If you did a quick Google search for "Red Brandywine Potato Leaf," you would find multiple vendors who sell something by that name. Here's a good article on all the tomatoes that go by the name "Brandywine," and why it is such a popular name for ones of various lineages. www.webgrower.com/information/craig_brandywine.html
@@capeflattery6179 I don't doubt you. I'm just saying that I believe the true Red Brandywine is a regular leaf while the true Pink Brandywine is a potato leaf.

I can't wait until they start producing again. All were excellent.
you left out sudith brandywine .
I grew cherokee purple.....not good at all.
None of these tomatoes are high yielders. They are delicous.
For high yields, I recommend growing determinates. Indeterminate tomatoes aren't great producers, but they have some really cool, interesting and delicious varieties. For high yields, give Celebrity and Siletz a try. This year, I'm also growing Abu Rawan and Bella Rosa, which are supposed to both be very heat tolerant, high yielding determinates.
