My favorite tomato varieties are Thorburns Terra-cotta (small slicer), Dr. Wyche's Yellow (large slicer), black cherry, and the ever classic tommy toe.
Hi Ross I grow tomatoes in NY, have grown some outstanding heirloom tomatoes, some of the best for flavor : Gold Medal, Black Pinapple, Black Krim, Omar Lebanese, Box Car Willie,Amish Paste, Hillbilly, Opalka, Cherokee Green, Dr Wyeche, Goldman Italian American, Cuore di Bue, Belgium Giant...
Ross, the excess rain coupled with cloudy conditions resulted in my worse tomatoe crop in forty years. Your area was almost as bad . I threw away Cherokee Purple tomatoes that had turned to mush. So sad Ross, RVA has had its wettest year ever even with a below average winter. BUT, my survival tomatoes is Brandy Wine Yellow Platfoot Strain. It holds up to all seasons dry to very wet. Close to Brandypink on taste but a little low on acid this year.
Good tomato tasting video. Your description and rating are helpful. I was thinking about trying to grow Mortgage lifter, German Stripes, and Black Prince as others seemed to rave about them but since you aren’t as thrilled, plus my garden is small and limited, I guess I won’t try these next year and will save room to grow Brandywine, Black Krim, and Cherokee Purple instead. I wasn’t drawn to green zebra before until you gave it a 9 for taste. I think I will spend the money to get the seeds. Thanks and god bless.
There are some fun open pollinated varieties from wild boar farms, a lot of which you can get from baker creek. The dark galaxy is really good, very rich taste.
I planted over 20 different tomatoes this year and I didn't get a single one, I live in southern California and it's usually really nice, but something happened this year that made the temperature go up to 120°F for almost a month burning all my tomato plants, even my 9 foot reed avocado tree got burned to the ground.
I know this is from 4 years ago, but I've always wanted to hear your thoughts on, Marianna's Peace tomato and Black From Tula. When I heard you say one of your favorite tomatoes was Goose Creek, I knew I could trust your taste reviews.
Try "Black Beauty". It's sort of new, so you probably will have to get it mail order. This time of year, there probably aren't any plants available, but you can get the seeds & try for the Fall. It's a beefsteak variety, but has that antioxidant stuff that gives blackberries their color, where most black or purple tomatoes get their color from the absence of a pigment. Black Beauty, not to be confused with the eggplant, is black or purple from the blackberry antioxidant, that the University of Oregon got from some wild South American tomatoes, from which they developed a snack sized tomato (I don't remember, what it is called), and some mad man tomato breeder in Texas, if I remember right, was able to take that U of Oregon development and somehow cross it w/ a beefsteak, to get a normal sized black antioxident tomato. I grew one several years ago & got a couple of good tomatoes out of it, but had a bunch of "life comes at you fast" things come up & couldn't look after my garden, so wasn't able to properly care for my tomatoes, or collect seed from the Black Beauty. ...I think, that I remember, that it's an heirloom tomato, but I could be mistaken? ...Anyhow, I'm going to give it another try & hope, that you try it. From what I remember, it tastes like an average beefsteak, but having the antioxidants, where it's color actually means something, is a big plus, in my opinion. It's blacker, where the Sun hits it, btw.
Black Prince is amazing here in iowa, maybe you got a bad strain? They are our faves!!! I've grown black cherry every year for a decade, they are awesomeeeeeee prob the best type of cherry out there. Garden Peach is very fruity and fuzzy, super unique, low production for us and a tiny bit mushy.
i agree guys, i did Japanese Black Trifele last year as well as black prince, Cherokee purple, pink and red brandywine, i have done black cherry, black trim, and chocolate stripes...all were amazing. This is my first time trying the green zebra. Here is a link to a tomato haul vid i shot last year if you find time to watch! ua-cam.com/video/nTw-j2HWs-A/v-deo.html
Tomatoes will drop its flowers to try to “save it self” in high heat. I’m sure that’s the issue you are dealing with here. It’ looks like your not getting blossom end rot or other problems to the fruit. It looks like it’s simply just producing tomatoes which would not happen if your plants dropped the flowers. Great vid btw 👍
I noticed something this year regarding my tomatoes. I bought two 14" plants and planted about 10 plants and had another 8 plants volunteer. My purchased plants went through so much transplant shock they did not produce as much fruit as the ones planted by seed in the ground. The purchased plants did get bigger though. Did you notice this?

It's high in anthocyanin, that's what gives it the dark pigment. The more sun the fruits receive the darker they will be.
@@Lyndsay-jh2um Thanks. That's it. I have trouble recalling words sometimes.

Could be! Location is everything though.
Cherokee Purple, Hungarian Heart for sauce, Parks Whopper for Production/taste together. Brandywine Red,
Does that Black Prince taste like the Carbon, Purple Cherokee, Black Krim family??
Yes try Lemon Boy they are great 👍
Japanese Black Trifele is supposedly one of the best, on the same level as Cherokee Purple and Brandywine.
Definitely. There's so many pinks. I am afraid to try more and possibly be disappointed.
Yes very good, some other superb varieties of dark -black Black Krim, Nyagous, Chocolate Stripes and Black Cherry

What are your top favorite tomatoes for taste?

Seeds do so much better. Temperature of the soil matters a lot though. Warmer temps means less transplant shock.
Green zebra is not like most gwr tomatoes most green tomatoes are super sweet low acidic. Love green tomatoes.
