I love how slow Vader’s blade ignites at 0:17 and how quick Obi Wan’s blade ignites at 0:53 because it shows how calm Vader is compared to how terrified Obi Wan is
i like how obi wan told leia the force is the light in the dark but then when he's alone in the dark facing vader he turns his lightsaber on because he's "scared" of the dark which implies he lost almost all connection to the force
I think it may have been intentionally severed or dampened as a hiding strategy, so he couldn't be sensed while watching over Luke. Similar to what Luke did in the Last Jedi
Probably because the pure and utter failure on his part to save Anakin. But, on a psychological level; Obi Wan, he cannot form the belief and faith necessary to continue to maintain the connection to the force. Any part of it. His resolve is waived. He can’t fight Vader because mentally, he’s defeated. He’s failed on so many levels. Firstly, he has to consider whether killing Anakin was actually the better option considering the pains that’s followed; but he is the chosen one, he is said to bring balance to the force. Such a conflicting contradiction. Things like this disrupt the concentration and clear headedness needed to tap into either side. Whether by love, hate or neutrality, one must be focused. Resolved. Clear. Belief. Faith.
It's crazy because Vader at this point is supposed to be several times weaker than Anakin. He is fighting against a man with no limbs bound in a torture suit lined with spikes and is still losing. The pure aura of pain and suffering is engulfing them both that it literally brings down Obi-wan down to Vader's level.
Obi Wan while certainly hasn’t suffered as much as Anakin, has suffered so much over the years, he witnessed his master Qui Gon, the only father figure in his life and Satine the love of his life die in his arms both murdered by his old rival Maul and yet he gave him a respectful end. He was also forced to chop down his brother’s limbs and to watch him immolate in the fiery lava of Mustafar and constantly suffer and live in regret for the rest of his life until only he realised that this all was never about him and he had to become one with the force in order for the next generation of Jedi to rise. Man am I surprised that he never gave in to the dark side, this man’s epic.
Honestly it's really interesting to see how the two interact in Kenobi compared to Episode IV. Here, Kenobi's panicky and genuinely terrified, still lost after the fall of the Republic. Vader has harnessed his anger, his rage, his obsession with Kenobi and converted it into power, and it shows. Then there's Episode IV, where Kenobi has long since accepted whatever his future may be while Vader... hadn't changed one bit. he was still vengeful, still obsessed over Obi-Wan, and that was the difference. One had managed to move on, and the other had not. Vader didn't even get the satisfaction of seeing Kenobi's corpse, nor the satisfaction of truly beating his master and redeeming his previous loss because Kenobi had chose to die there instead of killed. He really did become more powerful than Vader could imagine, because Vader lost in both spirit and mind when he struck him down. No satisfaction, no vengeance, no corpse. All that was left of his vengeance and obsession was a robe and a lightsaber.
It’s likely Kenobi retrained again and restored enough of his Force power back by his old age and of course Rebels reveals he could hold his own quite well after some re training.
"Now you will suffer... Obi-Wan. Your pain... has just... begun..." There you can see that Anakin has lost his mother, his wife, his child, his body, his limbs, and lives in pain every day for the last ten years. And he blames Ob-Wan for all of it.
Vader is to blame for alot of his pain, but Anakins death was straight up Obiwans fault 😂 he couldve rescued her or allowed Anakin to rescue her but he didnt...

This hits even harder for Obi-Wan when you think he’s realizing right now what has been told to us by Lucas since the movies came out: that Darth Vader is the combination of all the villains of the Prequels. Adding up to the trauma of knowing this monster is actually Anakin, Obi is also most likely seeing in him the “ghosts” of Maul, Dooku and Grievous. And all the pain and fear he endured at their hands is coming back to haunt him.
I don't know if that so much is coming back to haunt him or if it is more the fact that Obi-Wan feels the weight of all the atrocities the empire has committed or that he can imagine that the empire has committed because he wouldn't finish the job on mustafar. He has the guilt knowing that whatever terror Vader has unleashed on the Galaxy is his fault for not ending him when he had the chance.
I came here to pay my respects. James Earl Jones was the perfect voice for Darth Vader. His timing and delivery were absolute perfection. He put 100% effort into every line and it just made Darth Vader that much more terrifying. RIP James Earl Jones and may the Force be with you.

Think about this through Kenobi’s eyes. The last time he saw him, Anakin was still freshly anointed by the dark side. His brother still wore Jedi robes, carried a sky-blue lightsaber, and his eyes weren’t even yellow. He was only a fallen Jedi; an angry, grieving emo. But now, he is fully transformed into a dark obelisk of power. His lightsaber blood-red. His breathing haunting, and a terrifying new voice. And it is all hitting Kenobi full-force. It gives new meaning when his eyes look him up and down, having changed so greatly. “What have you become?”

Realistically obi wan is very weak at the moment because he hasn’t used the force much in a very long time and also hasn’t used his lightsaber in a long time either
Not using the force I understand but not practicing Saber skills? Maybe he thought Vader was dead so he didn't think he needed to use a Saber? Idk very confusing to me. That's like a military solider being stranded in enemy territory and then decides to become a chef at one of their restaurants for years never picking up a gun or practicing and then the enemy finds out who he is and he has to fight his way out with nothing but kitchen knives and pans, that would be one dead soldier.
@@hiro7489 He buried his lightsaber in the middle of the dessert, which means he thought he'd never use it again. Remember this obi-wan had been depressed for over 10 years, the mental pain alone is enough to weaken even the strongest soldier.
I like how this came out, Vadar comes in expecting a duel like in ROTS but is surprised he ran away. At that point he figured out that Kenobi fears him and does not even bother to put much effort in fighting. At the end he has an idea of what’s been going on with Kenobi and let’s him go. He knows he will be haunted by him for the rest of of his life. As much as I like to see Vadar playing with Kenobi I think I can speak for all that we wanted more, but this is good enough for me.
Fr. Vader didnt expect an Obi Wan who just runs away from his problems. He expected the Obi wan that had the balls to jump in a room full of battle droids, and challenge Grievous right in the heart of enemy territory. He expected the Obi wan who had been making Maul his bitch his entire life. U could tell he was disappointed
This series should never have been made. It was just another Disney nostalgia $$$ grab. The story expands nothing, changes nothing and brings nothing new to the table because it can't.
And I love how Obi-Wan finally accepts whatever responsibility he had for making Vader Vader(I know it was still Anakins choices to become evil)and entrusts his own fate in the Force as well as Luke's and then as a result, he is able to not only absolutely destroy Vader bad enough to Crack the Vader personality and allow Anakin to briefly reach out, but tap into a level of Jedi power that at that point not many, possibly anyone, had seen or were told it was a fairy tale
“I am what you made me”. That line hits so hard when considering Anakin’s past and the events of Mustafar. It also helps to reinforce the sense for Kennobi that he failed his padawan and in doing so helped create Darth Vader.
Yep and even sadder when in the finale, Obi-Wan briefly gets Anakin to appear who reassures him that his own downfall was his own doing, and not Obi-Wan's.
Darth Vader wasn’t referring to his turn to the Dark Side. He was talking about how Obi-Wan destroyed his body and forced him on mechanical lifesupport. This is pretty much reinforced later on when Vader tells Obi-Wan he is not responsible for his turn.
They kinda always were since that was his shtick and main Form. Anakin was always a powerhouse with incredibly powerful swings capable of disarming opponents not prepared for it, but now it's been elevated to a whole new level. Plus, he isn't at all slow or cumbersome
@@Aurilion44 Yes but the suit does massively slow him down. Without that, he'd be invincible and he would literally be toying with Obiwan, the most powerful Jedi ever alongside Yoda and Windu and the former non evil Anakin.
From 4:37 and onward, the Vader we see from there isn’t Vader (figuratively), it’s Anakin. Which is why he lets Obi wan go because Vader is still dealing with conflict between the light and the dark side. Which is also why Palpatine pointed out that perhaps Vader’s feelings for his old master have weakened him at the end of episode 6
Great take! My take is that he is so shocked by how bad obi wan is that he lets him go out of pity. What sort of revenge is a revenge on a shell of the person who hurt you.
You’re both right but I also think Vader also wanted obi-Wan At his best think about it at first he wanted to torture him but after that fire it’s almost as if he wanted Obi-Wan to regain his former strength he wants to prove that he’s more powerful than ever especially after basically creating him him and nobody this time was going to stop you.
I like how that’s the first time Obi-Wan activates his lightsaber since Knightfall, and it’s not even because he wants to. He ignited it purely because he feels fear, because Vader terrifies him.
Seeing Obi-Wan running away from a fight showed just how broken he was, he was no longer the master, he was the survivor. The callback to Anakin burning was so damn brutal. Shits about to go down. I love how much power is in every saber strike from Vader, this is gonna be an epic series and it already is.

Likely Vader knew it too because notice during that little altercation, Vader was using just one hand. Anyone who's seen Empire Strikes Back knows that one-handed wielding Vader means that he's just toying with you.
I think in the next episode, obi wan will realize that being a Jedi again is the best way to protect Luke from Vader, and we will see him begin to practice with the saber again
Vader’s power in this scene is just unreal. He is basically toying with obi. The power of his lightsaber swings. Love this series so far! Can’t wait for the rematch
His cyborg enhancements might be the bad in terns of quality, but they still give him a massive strength boost. Not to mention he is still pretty pissed after getting his other limbs chopped off, his skin burns, and his final limbs also suffers a heavy burns.
I love how Vader doesn't even gloat to Obi-Wan that he is stronger now or waxing on about the power of the dark side, instead hitting straight against Obi-Wan and burning into him how it is he who turned him into more machine than man.
Can we bust notice that Vader didn't use any form of combat? He knows that Kenobi didn't train for a long time, he justtortured him without using any fighting style, just brutally attacks him
The fire reflecting in the eyes of Vader's helmet is really creepy but also brilliant foreshadowing. This whole first fight just gave me shivers seeing Vader in his prime. Pure uncompromised rage & hatred!

I love how in this scene Obi wan not only looks old, but also extremely ragged, whereas in the last fight he has with Vader in the finale, which is a far more intense fight, he looks completely put together and collected. For Obi wan to have beat Vader at that point, I think it really shows how ridiculously powerful Obi wan actually was at this stage of his life, and more than that, for him to have gained all that power back over just a few days is just insane, I love it
@@texasgent4694 That's a great observation. Vader was disappointed that Kenobi was essentially a shell of his former self in this fight. He could have easily killed him if he wanted to, but it wouldn't have given him any satisfaction. Not surprising at all that he let him go, he wanted to defeat the version of Kenobi that had bested him on Mustafar.
Vader probably expected an Episode III Kenobi or stronger since it's been years. But nah, Kenobi thought that Anakin died and buried the lightsabers and never used the force and focused on looking over Luke.
Even with the mask on you can tell this is the angriest Vader put to screen, just how intent he was to cause obi wan the same pain he blames him for , compared to most other missions he's done this one was the most personal he's dealt with and most likely the strongest he's been in the dark side
It always makes me wonder what Vader was planning to do with Obi Wan after his capture. Yeah, torture seems like a valid option, but Darth claimed at the end of the series that he killed Anakin Skywalker and wanted to do the same to Obi Wan. I honestly think his objective was to turn him to the Dark Side. If not through torture, then through threatening his loved ones.
@@conn_man_249 Yeah but in Return of the Jedi he said “Obi Wan once thought as you do” when speaking to Luke about how he sees good in him still. It would lend more credence to that line if he at least tried in this show.

@@naughtybethesda1954 Obi-Wan clearly says goodbye to Anakin in ROTS, and praises him. The next time they meet, he is talking to Vader on Mustafar, though he calls him Anakin. It's made pretty clear on Mustafar that Obi-Wan chooses principle over loyalty. It's Anakin and Luke who have loyalty to people over principle. Lucas wrote all this to fit with the OT. The problem is that some people want to take figures of speech in dialogue over who the characters are and the actions they take. This show is waste of time, IMO.
This fight felt so scary and realistic, the instant fear plus 10 years of hiding and suffering unbearable sadness, gulit, despair and not using the force or lightsaber has rusted almost all of Obi-Wan’s knowledge and skills to properly defend himself while Anakin/Vader was busy getting stronger thanks to his wrathful hatred for Obi-Wan and desire to find and get revenge on him. at that point all Obi-Wan could do is do what Cal did in Fallen Order, run and pray that he would be able to find some way to hold Anakin/Vader back long enough to escape
"Realistic" "Vader's so mad" "Should have killed me when you had the chance" The show and this scene didn't follow up on any of these things. Oh no the fire stops me from getting Obi, looks like he got away. Disney is just killing it.
Obi can't believe how powerful Vader's strikes are. Good acting. His face is like WTF???? He can hit hard AF? The dark side made him hit hard AF. He looks like nobody hits saber to saber with that much strength.
Reminds me of Rebels. Vader is like an angry glacier. Slow inevitable but filled with with precise attacks. He can't afford to waste movement anymore. The flashy duels of his youth are gone with his limbs.
It's truly sad, that Obi-Wan has to come back to his Jedi life, he was done with everything after Order 66, after Anakin turned to the dark side, and he never uses the force for a decade or holding a lightsaber.
Funny how recluse Obi Wan in ANH and Yoda in ESB, despite hiding away from the force for decades, have no problem using the force multiple times in those movies. Maybe this is a force rule that just affects Disney Wars.
“I am what you made me” hits hard in both the physical sense (Anakin being maimed and burned and needing the suit) and well..*gestures at Vader during the episode*
All Obi Wan sees in that brief moment of dialogue in Vader's chest panel coming out of the darkness... Seeing Anakin in that suit, knowing who is beneath the mask paralyses Obi Wan; the fear in Obi's face tells the whole story. This is what he made Anakin into, this is what failing Anakin did. He is, just as Anakin is, responsible for the birth of the monster before him.

He does. Right when the Stormtroopers start firing back as he stares on, he regrets lighting the ground on fire and wishes he just took Obi Wan in for torture
@@Mrpedr092 my bet is that he realizes deep down that Obi Wan would be haunted by him anyway. Finding him again wouldn't be difficult, but he's hoping to either torment his former master mentally or wait till he's more worth killing. As of now kenobi is barely even a shell of his old self
I remember being one of those people for a long time that “they shouldn’t meet before ep4 or it breaks canon” but honestly it makes more sense that they did before. Both obi and Vader’s reactions in ep 4 are way to chill without context of this show especially since it would’ve been 20 years since they last saw each other. In this show we see obi wan come to terms that Anakin is gone and Vader learns not to let his emotions get the better of him, hence why obi wan in ANH is treating it so casual by mocking him and choosing to die. And Vader being more careful rather than going full out because of how obiwan beat him the second time leaving him nearly at death once again.
More than the lack of practice of the Force and the saber, we feel that it is the psychological locks that hinder Obi-Wan. Pain, regrets, feelings of guilt, fear of failing to protect Padmé's children... I like this extreme weakness which is very understandable. And I also like that what we see explains why Obi-Wan was sure Anakin couldn't come back: Vader is a bloodthirsty piece of shit here.
"Is that truly my Old Master Obi-Wan Kenobi? The one who trained me, fought with me, sided with the jedi, and made me lose everything including a few limbs? He doesn't even use the High Ground!"
I think Vader is fighting here with Ben and that's the reason in his dialogue in episode 4 he speak about the last time they met he was the learner and now he is the master, he speak in episode 4 about Obi wan and not Ben. Is like Vader and Anakin, they are in the same body but they are separated, obi wan is the jedi master and ben is just the guy trying to escape. (Sorry for my english, my real language is spanish)
Although he hid himself better than most, it came at the cost of his experience, he was less prepared to fight Vader, and doesn’t have the usual composure a Jedi would, even in a situation where you face someone you thought was dead, someone you thought that had failed.
Really felt for Obi-Wan in this scene, to see what had become of Anakin, once a good man and like his brother....to have fallen that far. I mean I know he had probably known that Anakin wasn't dead, but to see in person what he had turned into...
@@tylerhastings2766 it's AI assisted. You're mostly hearing a computer with the occasional bits and pieces of Hayden Christensen tones and overlays. And for those major scenes in the finale it's almost all Christensen obviously lol
Love how Darth Vader casually turns off his lightsaber after Obi-Wan runs, watching him run away, before eventually following. He goes from the satisfaction of finally being able to have a duel with Obi-Wan, and instead is met with a broken version of his old master who had lost all resolve, who would rather run for his life than fight. He's disappointed he wasn't met with a challenge!
This, to me, is what Vader is at his worst- a horror movie villain. A sort of boogeyman that strikes fear into the hearts of anyone and is fueled by his desire to bring death to those who stand in his way and cause pain to those he hates the most. But what makes this even better is you can just feel the hatred he has for Obi-Wan. Because, while Obi-Wan was well-meaning, his treatment towards Anakin wasn't the best, being overly critical towards him instead of being encouraging and considerate due to being so by-the-book when it came to the Jedi code. So, I see every confrontation of his with Obi-Wan as Vader venting all his pent up trauma onto him.
"When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master. ...Oh, except for that other time a couple years ago where I basically curb stomped you. I was the master then too."
I think in their next fight vader is gonna be caught by surprise when kenobi gets himself back into form and learn from his mistakes in the next fight and carefully devise a method to beat him for a new hope.

Resolved. Clear. Belief. Faith.
I feel so sorry for Obi Wan, seeing how far his former apprentice had fallen, as well as himself. This battle hit hard for him
Yep
Yeah man
Well i don't blame Anakin for his actions either
The Jedi order not trusting him is the biggest reason for him to turn to the darkside.
@@SJ-yf9xy And don't forget it was Palpatine's doing by manipulating and being a 'father figure' to Anakin when he was a kid
Brilliant way of putting it!
Love this analysis
Beyond that it showed Vader that he couldn’t attain what all truly wanted from his path: immortality.

I like how this came out, Vadar comes in expecting a duel like in ROTS but is surprised he ran away.

@@phonepunk7888 i mean a new hope takes place 9 years after this series, so i think there's more happened during the 9 year gap

@@voraaphran6075 I think all of these answers are correct equally.
Of course Vader wants to see how much stronger he has grown with the dark side of the force
That and maybe he wanted to find out who Obi-Wan was allied with and destroy them all

*So instead of "The circle is now complete." in Episode IV, it should be "The figure 8 is now complete."*

Figure 8's just two circles.
@@Elvisbackpack *Yes. TWO circles.*
Vader when he drags Obi Wan through the fire, “Ooohh I been waitin a lonnngg time for this!” (Channing Tatum Gambit voice.) lol
I had always wondered what a conversation pre a new hope would be like and it did not disappoint. “ what have you become?” I am what you made me. I’m glad they didn’t have him just charge him he drew him out and made him vulnerable and then toyed with him the second half of this episode felt like a horror movie and I loved it.
Right?! I was telling my wife that lol. I was like the horror movies are garbage but this really set the tone of true fear it’s like everyone start taking notes.
it's got all the typical bad guy dialogue and hollywood tropes 10/10
Who’s here after hearing the news about the passing of James Earl Jones?😢 RIP TO THE LEGEND
3:40
Vader: Stings, doesn’t it!?
Look at little kenobi jr, gonna cry?
The Years have make you weak. Best line ever.
Believe me this won't be the only confrontation between these 2 in this series
I'm pretty sure they will fight again in last episode on mustafar again
He just runs off behind that hill in the beginning and Vader just standing there like ''uhh dude I can see you'' who wrote this crap? and secondly what happened to "last time we met I was but a learner, now I am the master” so it retconned the original movie.. Old Obi Wan would be all like ''what? last time we met what about all the times in between?'' becaulse this show is written by idiots who didn't even watch the OG.
Obi Wan yelling in pain sounds sorta like Anakin was yelling when they faced each other on Mustafar.
1:14 I like that music. It’s like anakins fall and the imperial theme mixed together.
3:23 At first I was wondering what Vader was waiting for, but then I saw him start to lean down and gasped. These moments of brilliance in Kenobi.
I love how he ignites the fire, then puts the fire out, but then immediately cannot put the fire out again when she ignites it.
Because he doesn't really care. If he wanted to he would use the force to stop that robot ect ect
He realized Obi-Wan had allies. In that moment he decided that it would be smart to let him regroup with his allies so he could take them all out. Smart move because it worked but then he let his feelings cloud his judgment in the last episode.

James Earl Jones is intrinsic to the haunting character of Vader. At 91 years old, he’s still got it! Just bittersweet that this may be one of his final performances as the character.
He doesn't still got it :p
They used an AI With the a company called Respeecher. JEJ Sounds alot deeper like in rogue one
Ah interesting, I thought he sounded a little better than in Rogue One. Still won’t be the same without him.
So much for "when I left you I was but the learner, now I am the master."
That was my first thought too. Vader and Obi-Wan shouldn’t have seen each other at all until Episode 4.

At least they put his voice no one elses
@@cesarvictorino8624 James Earl Jones actually sol his voice to Lucasfilm for the AI they used in this show. So, even though he’ll be gone, he’ll always be Darth Vader
I wonder if vader had any conflicts within him the whole time he had the suit, or was he still a just lil bit upset from the whole limb cutting and body burning he went through lol.
He does. Right when the Stormtroopers start firing back as he stares on, he regrets lighting the ground on fire and wishes he just took Obi Wan in for torture
@@jayday187 If Vader wanted to take Obi Wan he would have. He let him go on purpose. Why? I have no idea. Hopefully we will find out soon.
@@Mrpedr092 probably paralyzed with PTSD from the fire since, you know, he got burned on Mustafar
@@nitrosix3206 100% agree. Great take on it
I remember being one of those people for a long time that “they shouldn’t meet before ep4 or it breaks canon” but honestly it makes more sense that they did before.
Too much of a stretch
Although he hid himself better than most, it came at the cost of his experience, he was less prepared to fight Vader, and doesn’t have the usual composure a Jedi would, even in a situation where you face someone you thought was dead, someone you thought that had failed.
Really felt for Obi-Wan in this scene, to see what had become of Anakin, once a good man and like his brother....to have fallen that far. I mean I know he had probably known that Anakin wasn't dead, but to see in person what he had turned into...
0:40 You can tell Vader's just thinking "Well, that was anticlimactic."
The running around killed this scene for me
James Earle’s voice is just music to the fucking ears…. What an iconic voice. Poor obi😩 give my boy a break Vader.
“You can not run, Obi-Wan.” That is the most menacing Darth Vader ever! I’m so happy they brought old James Earl Jones back.
His voice sounds closer to the original trilogy here than in rogue one. I think his voice may have been de aged
@@tylerhastings2766 it has.
@@tylerhastings2766 iirc Jones was sick when he voice dubbed Vader during Rogue One.
@@tylerhastings2766 it's AI assisted. You're mostly hearing a computer with the occasional bits and pieces of Hayden Christensen tones and overlays. And for those major scenes in the finale it's almost all Christensen obviously lol
Vader could have just force pulled Obi to himself instead of waiting for the noob stormtroopers lmao
“Well, well, well, how the turntables.”- Micheal Scott
2:30 you gotta appreciate how both anakin and Luke use the tactic of just smacking the other persons lightsaber over and over
Love how Darth Vader casually turns off his lightsaber after Obi-Wan runs, watching him run away, before eventually following. He goes from the satisfaction of finally being able to have a duel with Obi-Wan, and instead is met with a broken version of his old master who had lost all resolve, who would rather run for his life than fight. He's disappointed he wasn't met with a challenge!
funniest part of the scene by far
Yeah, but they are going to re-edit A New Hope just to change that line.
I really hope that this is not the only fight between them before this series ends. I loved the flashback scenes and how they connect to Part V. Just hope Part VI is like the released concept art they released of them dueling.
For real, I hope Obi-Wan wrecks Vader in episode 6.

@@Tidushii Also you forget that In Return of the Jedi, Vader tells Luke “Obi-Wan once thought as you do”. That line makes no sense if the last interaction Vader had with Kenobi was on Mustafar.

The sounds Vader makes at 2:30 are hilarious and frightening at the same time
