I'm just here to say thank you.
I was getting a loud hissing noise from the pipe after I inspected the pipe I found a very large cut which cause the hissing every time the turbo spools up, after finding the leak I repaired the pipe.
And now my awesome boost that gets me back in the seat is back, and there is no longer any black smoke every time I floor the car.

Thanks for this Steve, just had a nightmare with a leaking intercooler hose, tried this fix but whatever I tried it wouldn’t locate properly, in the end used heavy zip ties as a collar around the pipe and intercooler tube then shoe-laced the two together, goes like stink now especially after cleaning all the crud from the intercooler vanes, I like your relaxed, almost laid back delivery of information, good stuff, Lower control arm bushes next, then the DPF.
It certainly pays to be inventive if you want that boost to stay where it belongs! Well done!

You could try going to a the hardware store and check the o-rings for faucets in the plumbing section. You might be able to find a similar size thicker o-ring.
No kidding the teflon trick works. My hoses were quite leaky and the teflon increased boost pressure from 1.5 to 1.8. Amazing. I guess wont last for long but it works

I replaced the fancy connectors with standard hose clamp ones! I took an intercooler from a 136hp E46 320D and it is plug and play, fits any E46 just fine you just have to peel off the metal connector from the hose

Had an e46 like you but compact ran bigger boost on standard intercooler just done the "Mikalor" mod you did all i had trouble with was EGR delete pipe would leak. Now I've moved onto the 120d I am suffering same ailments as you I believe the 335d intercooler is a good upgrade but still has the plastic crap they say the MTC intercooler is the one to get if your in the UK.
Hi, yep, everything wants to leak! I like the idea of having the 'anti runaway' throttle valve in place, but that is now leaking too... I think the 335 style intercooler is a good compromise between functionality and easy fitment.

Hi, thanks for watching! The oil that gets sprayed out with the air gives it away every time. There really shouldn't be any unexplained oil outside of an engine.

Hi, pulling the air in from above the radiator is pretty much perfect, and after that it could definitely be improved. It would be great if the airflow didn't do so many 90 degree hard turns on its way to the turbo, and its not like there is any shortage of room to have a better configuration.

My diesel astra is pulsing under load. Had a look at the boost pipe and can see oil has been sprayed out from the connection. Will try the plumbers tape on it. Cheers.

Hi Steve, thia video has helped me out so much. Just one question please if you may answer. My red boos pipe was also leaking some oil. Having a new boost pipe fitted as we speak. My engine oil had dropped a little while leading up to noticing the boost pipe leak. Would the boost leak effect the engine oil level In anyway?
Hi, I wouldn't expect so - probably best to keep searching for the reason for the oil consumption / leak.

Hi, if the engine is in good condition then there shouldn't be too much, but if the turbo is leaking a lot of oil then it should probably be cleaned out when the new turbo goes in.

So I have been fighting with boost leaks on my 2008 335XI with the N54 engine. This only started now after installing a pair of 17T TD04 turbos. The clamping and sealing system is almost the same as the one shown here but not quite. There seems to be nothing used for an "O" Ring. They clip the same way but it looks different at the clamping area. At least it does to me. I have an upgraded aftermarket good quality intercooler with the OEM clamping method used. So I guess I will be looking for some other type of solution for my troubles as I can't identify a place to put tape to help the sealing of it. None the less great video and thank you for the hard in making it a quality video!
Hi, when you go for more flow and boost then you are quite a bit past what the stock quick-connect pipes are designed for. If you like your intercooler then a good option is to get a welder to cut and replace the inlet and outlet with those designed for silicone hoses and v-band clamps. I have all of parts lying around now to do just that on my car (along with the bigger turbo), but that cheap repair that I did is determined to last and last!
Excellent video and thank you very much.My E83 M47TU suffers from 3FF0 code although inlet manifold,EGR, etc are clean.It looks that I have a boost leak and oil leak exactly in the described joint that leads to 3FF0 code.I have replaced IC and the seal.Problem sovled temporarily as engine is tuned and overboosted.Tomorrow I will put teflon tape and follow your instructions...I will report soon!!!

@@StevenBTuner Today my technician put Teflon tape. It looks that it is totally sealed. I have to wait for new adaptations of mass air meter and fuel adaptations. I will report!
@@StevenBTuner Good Evening. The problem still here as still a little drops of oil were in the floor today. Not as much as before Teflon tape.
But 3ff0 code is not here anymore neither too often regeneration in dpf. Maybe we need to put additional one more layer of Teflon tape...Mpg seems to be better today...Stay tuned...🙂

@@StevenBTuner Thanks to your advice I think I have solved a problem that occured to my car several months ago and was still present.
3ff0 code appeared too often and too often regenarations also happened sometimes.Power was unstable and I was in trouble.No oil leak was visible in the beginning but it seems that there was a boost leak for sure all the time.Oil leak happened recently so it lead to additional investigation of the problem.I have also repleced MAF sensor,MAP sensorI have cleaned EGR,EGR cooler,inlet manifold,checked swirl flaps mpla mpla mpla....Everything was OK and all technicians said that there was no boost leak...until the day I saw your video...
So I put teflon tape into the joints of the intercooler and the car has transformed totaly.
Power came back,mpg was improoved.It is obvious that boost leak leaded to overfueling and soot that clogged DPF.Additionaly if 3ff0 code is present,regenerations are suspended so DPF could be fool of soot and totaly clogged in some cases...Many problems solved with just some centimeters of teflon tape.Thank you again!
To add to your comment about using plastic parts I think it's also useful for engineering easily accessible points of failure. Hence the plastic charge pipe which is generally fine at stock pressures or until it ages and the plastic gets to many heat cycles.
30-45 min to replace it in your driveway...no big deal.

Thanks for video I have an X3 N55 engine and boost leak at turbo inlet side (air box to turbo pipe). Wondering how to huse the teflon tape as there is a big thick gasket on the pipe at turbo side
Hi, the teflon tape trick only really works on the plastic connections. That turbo inlet connection probably needs to be replaced every 5 years or so.
I have a oil leak (And probably an boost leak) on the rubber connector that connects the turbo pipe to intercooler. This helped me a ton.

Great video Steven, thank you. I have just had my 2017 F30 320d @49K, remaped.. It now has significantly more boost and is a joy to drive, however since the map there is now a high pitch dentist drill noise coming from the car. I have contacted the guy who did the map (A big brand) and he says not to worry its just due to more boost and nothing to be alarmed about... although that being logical..something inside tells me it's not right.. my search for answers has brought me here.. I'm thinking hosing, seals, gaskets before worrying about the actual turbo itself. Is hat the correct place to start would you say?
Hi, it is definitely worth keeping an eye out for the signs of a boost leak - which on a diesel car are always accompanied by some oil mist on whatever is close by. If the turbo is spinning faster to produce more boost then that will definitely make more noise - but it should be a nice kind of noise (a bit hard to explain...). If the noise is really annoying or is louder during gear changes then it can be the turbo shaft has fore/aft movement, and the impeller is starting to rub against the alloy housing. You can check this fairly easily by removing the air inlet pipe in front of the turbo and moving the shaft with your fingers and looking for scraping of the alloy. That kind of movement means a new turbo cartridge is required (if you are into DIY), or a new turbo. Another way that you can get a lot of turbo noise is if the DPF pressure sensor pipe is not on properly, or if one of the hoses connecting to the front of the turbo are not sealing 100%.
Hello Steven. Just discovered you. I too am all for well made plastic parts. I find it very hypocritical that so many people feel the need to rag on BMW for using them yet under the hood of every other model and make there is just as much plastic used for all the same reasons. (Mostly). But for some reason people seem to want to take the "Bavarian Motor Werks" (works? lol) company down a notch because they feel threatened or something. (Usually that's why people lash out anyway LOL).
Haha, no doubt! Plastics are awesome - especially when reinforced with carbon fiber or fiberglass.
@stevenbturner thanks for the vid...but one thing wasent clear for me i have an e70 35d 2008 and the oil leak is all over the hose...so didnt really get the solution...i need to change the intercooler...but ur method at the end was to tape the ends of the hose...so im kind of lost...thanks
Hi, if things are that bad then replacement of the intercooler and hoses will keep things working well for 5 years or so.

It is normal, but not desirable. If there is a boost leak then your turbo has to spin faster to give you the boost you want, which will wear it out faster.

In my opinion
If you find oil coming out from the connecting points between the turbo all the way up to manifold intake at any point, (usually at the start or end of the intercooler) that means you have turbo seal problem, as that considers excessive oil leak.
The pressure will push oil out or all the way up to the engine and results different problems like high emission/ smoke/power lose.
Hi, it can be that - but 99% of the time it is more likely to be oil from the crankcase breather.

Sir, appreciate your video VERY much! Quick question, when I replace the charge pipe, do I really need to clean up all the oil inside charge pipe and the other pipes that it connects to? Or just simply replace it? My problem on 335i E93 was that when I was driving fast “on turbo” the charge pipe popped up and neck area when that clip ticks broke, so keep putting back the charge pipe manually every time I drive but not working coz its loose and air pops out again when accelerating and give a check engine on and a message says, “engine fault, reduced power”

Hi, a little bit of oil coating the inside of the pipe is not a problem, but if there is a lot then it could indicate a leaking turbo. If there is a broken part on the pipe or connector then there is not much choice but to replace it.

Hi Steve whilst taking off that first hose in your video do you know if it has a steel o ring inside as doing mine in the garage yesterday I stood on steel o ring and asked my mechanic if that was from inside the pipe he said not it was from a job the day before but I'm not too sure as my pipe has blown off from the interccoler a few hours later.
Hi, the only steel is the clip on the outside. All of the sealing is done by the synthetic rubber ring.

Hi, silicone hoses are the best upgrade to do if you are wanting to hold in some extra boost. If you don't mind a good puzzle, and a fair bit of fiddling, then you can even use cheap universal kits
hi great video, I am wondering would the leak due to the pipe seal issue causing a whistling sound when start engine and accelerating? I am currently having this whistle sound, but didn't find any obvious leak? I am going to try your PTFE method and try again. if it does not work, I may have to change my turbo ... btw, what is the spray you used on the o-ring ? many thanks
Hi, thanks for watching! Most of the time you won't hear boost leaks. Whistling is often a worn out bearing in the turbo that is allowing the impeller to rub against the alloy housing - you can check by taking the hose off the front of the turbo and seeing if the shaft moves forward and backward at all. All the best in getting to the bottom of the issue.

I bought a aftermarket intercooler. After installing both end of inlets. I notice after popping on the steel retaining clip. I had a slight gap. Test drive the car and now I have boost leak. Do you think the Teflon tape will help?
Hi, when you go for an aftermarket intercooler, very few of them are made to exacting standards that will fit the BMW pipes. It is usually best to go alloy with nice big beads so that the hoses can't slip off, silicone hoses along with big clamps.
Hello, i have big boost leak but around 3,500rmp. I fonded a lot of oil around pipe comming from turbo and on intercooler. I changed pipe but also big leak boost is there. I have 330d xdrive and car cant go more than 180km/h..
And on every gear you cant go more than 4K rpm also when you have full throtel around 4K rpm fuel consuption decrease to 8-9l/100km from 20l/100km
Hi, sounds like there is still some searching to be done - there are heaps of places it can be. Also check for EGR errors.
im doing this job today... good job i saw your vid before i go snd start but how much oil is likely to be in side the pipe? if there is alot is that bad? i know there always will be some but why? cant that lead to a engine runaway... thank for your vid snd advice.. please keep the videos coming .. now ive got to go and lie in the wet cause ive no access to a garage 😔
Hi, the oil mostly comes from blow-by gases that are fed back into the air intake, so it is quite normal for there to be some from all engines. You could reduce it by putting in a catch-can, which is something I probably will try out in future. However, if there is heaps in the pipes, and the intercooler is full of it too, then there is a good chance that the seals on the turbo are leaking, and that isn't so good. The E90 in the video has a 'throttle valve' that closes when you switch off the engine, so that no air can get in, and so engine run-away is impossible even with a leaking turbo. Some diesel engines have this, and some don't. All the best in getting your car back to full health and full boost!

@@lockettlv luckily there wasn't much oil build up in the charge pipe and I replaced all the vacuum lines that where beginning to perish. had to take a break while weather is bad always cold and raining, just waiting on the next dry day to carry on with rest of repairs.. this repair did help a little but my car hadn't lost that much boost, I could tell it was on its way to losing more if I hadn't fixed it.
@@leevinylcritic any updates mate? Lots of 535ds I've been going to view all have a small amount of oil around the front of the intercooler and this pipe. My friend who's a mechanic is worried and says it could be turbo etc and telling me not to buy

I saw some oli droplet on the floor and its coming from bottom intercooler hose. Turbo was on service. So if there is some olis must be a boost leak?
Hi, thanks for watching! If that part of the car hasn't been cleaned for many years then it's worth cleaning everything thoroughly and then see what comes back. But yes, if oil is getting out, then precious boost pressure is getting out too.
I fitted a new intercooler with new rings on my 320d and its leaking oil and throwing black smoke.
Im going to try your PTFE solution and see if it stops the leak

my 2007 335i has the steering lock issue but this time is different, while key on the windsheild wipers come on an cannot be turned off?
Hi, that is usually failure of the front ABS sensors, or the car is being 'driven' while up on stands.
Hi Steven, If the seal between turbo and intercooler pipe is leaked, will you have exhaust flume smell ? After removed the pipe to clean the oil, I have noticed flume smell and I can see some white smoke from under the turbo connection and it smell of exhaust
Hi, the crankcase ventilation pipe comes in at that point, so you could get the smell of the blow-by gases.
@@StevenBTuner thanks STEVEN, re-connect the boost pipe. and cleaned it with carb cleaner, all smell gone now. it was old kitchen roll debris inside the pipe

hey I bought an eBay fmic off someone that had clearly been used (oil was in the fmic). But when I fit to the oem connections the charge pipe side is loose as. Any suggestions?
Hi, if it is too loose then even the technique in this video may not be enough - but it could be worth a try before you throw it in the trash.

Hi, it is more likely to be blown out than sucked in I would expect.
i had a problem like this before but the pipe would blow off even after replacing the pipe for a new oem pipe so as i had spent money on the pipe (money is tight at the min) as a cheap "fix" i put a staggered silicone pipe over the intercooler and original pipe and clamped it down it worked great as a quick fix untill i could afford to replace the intercooler 👍

@@lockettlv i brought 45° elbow 70mm to 60mm but think i remember the 60mm end needed to be 50mm but the mikalor w2 clamps i used worked fine depending on where u need it u may not need the elbow and require a straight join

@@lockettlv yes thats right i used a tiny bit of oil on the inside of the silicone pipe to slip it on each end i would suggest using the mikalor w2 clamps instead of jublee clips as they are much better for sealing each end

On older cars 400.000 km and up i mount the lower boost pipes with a little bit of soft tex 7 silicon . Yes its a b!tch to demount afterwards , but its a cheap & cheerful solution . If you have the time for it :) . Darkside development and wagner both make good intercoolers also for bmw .

What if just replace the new intercooler hose ? Will that help?
Hi, it is the intercooler that wears away, so a new intercooler is needed every 10 years or so - or the fix I have used, or do a completely custom solution.
What does a boost leak sound like ???
Cause my BMW e90 320d m47 engine turbo has this loud blow when it spools up.
Hi, thanks for watching! Unless they are really bad, you won't normally hear a leak over the sound of the engine. If it more of a whistle sound then it usually indicates that the shaft bushing/bearing is worn and allowing the impeller to rub on the housing.
It's more of a loud hissing noise and the intercooler pipe is covered in oil from the outside.
Could I maybe have a bad leak cause it's not a whistle but more of a very loud hissing sound.

Hi, that will depend on whether you have any automatic transmission oil cooler hoses in the way - so it is very dependent on your exact model.

Okay, is oily supposed to be in intercooler?
Hi, it will always be oily - especially after 10 years or more - this is because the engine blow-by gases get fed back into the intake stream (unless you put in a catch can). Probably worth cleaning out every 5 years or so.

Hi, thanks for watching! There is no glue on the tape, it is standard PTFE plumbers pipe sealing tape.
@@StevenBTuner Thanks for your reply. I have BMW E60 m57 engine with this kind of problem. There is a seal but inside the pipe. Seal (o-ring) is new, but there is some oil coming out. @@JD-yi8ly Yes it did. Just put tape around the o-ring (from outside of the o-ring) and carefully put it on place. For me it works perfect. No Oil leaks.
If there's oil on the boost pipe doesn't that mean there turbo has an oil leak too?
Hi, there is plenty of oil coming through from the crankcase breather system, so it doesn't indicate a turbo problem on its own.

Isn't the oil from oil separator returned into the motor? What is the purpose of the oil separator if oil vapors goes into turbo system?
Great cheap solution mate! I was searching for solution like yours for ages, after I replaced seals but it didn’t solve the leaks. I will try it tomorrow.

Hi, when I first did it a few years ago there was lots of oil spatter under the pipe (all over the subframe) and the car was going into limp-home mode as the requested boost did not match the boost supplied. This time it is nowhere near that bad, but I'd rather catch things like this early because even if the turbo can overcome the leak eventually, it does not do it any good to be spinning faster than needed. Any leak will also cause an annoying second or so to pass after you change gear before the car pulls strongly again.

So I was wondering how long can you drive the car like that with slight oil leak from from the connectors that you put plumbing tape on, was just wondering how bad is that for the engine/turbo? @@_Nosferatu_ Hi, thanks for watching! I suspect that most BMWs that are over 5 years old and have those plastic intercooler connections are leaking to some degree. You are losing some boost so your turbo is having to spin faster to make the boost that is asked of it, but that won't kill it immediately (it will just not last as long as it could have).
This comes to my mind: Self-Fusing Silicone Tape.
Hi, that sounds like a good possibility if it is thin enough. I couldn't find any information on the thickness once stretched in the data sheet.
Ues the tape to wrap the connection, seal the leak.

Hi, there is twice as much pressure pushing it out, but if it did get sucked in I'm not sure the engine would even notice.

the main issue with small boost leaks is that is confuses the A/F ratio and the car doesnt run correctly
Hi, it is less of an issue with diesel cars, but a richer mixture than expected will create more soot, which then causes potential DPF clogging.
So if aftermarket intercooler pipes can work... Why doesn't someone just make an aftermarket pipe to make the OEM intercooler reliable 🤔
Hi, thanks for watching and wondering! There are lots of potential solutions, but none that I know of that are inexpensive, good, reliable and low maintenance. For cars put together in a factory they need to have connections that are push and click. As enthusiasts we can put up with tightening clamps every year or so to keep things working well.

Just do two rounds of insulating tape on the neck
Hi, anything on the outside will blown off fairly quickly.
Heat shrink with internal hot glue will make leaks no more.
